The library has always been a part of my life. Now that I have mobility issues, the library comes to me. I order my books online and once a month my "library lady" brings them to me and picks up the ones I have finished. Never a late fee. I read a couple of books a week, so this service has been a god-send.

I LOVE Libby and my library. A drive to town for me is 30 minutes. I can play an audio book through my car radio by using Libby. That’s a “free” hour of reading every trip 😉

I've had a library card since I was 6. My Mom was an elementary school teacher and we lived in a small (pop. 700) Midwestern town. I've lived all over the U.S. and always get a library card.
I currently live in a town of ~35,000. The library has a maker space- I've used the digitization station and sewing machines; a computer room which I use frequently because I don't own a computer or have Internet; they have Libby, Tumblebooks (kid's ebooks) and a movie/tv show service called Kanopy.
I'm 63 now but back when I was a single Mom with 4 kids, the library was a lifesaver.

Great video, Tim! Another reason to encourage people to use libraries? The number of users impacts their funding - dramatically! It’s SO important to use our public libraries, local historical societies, etc. because those visitor numbers help them to get grant funding, funding from the city or county, and this helps them maintain and expand their services… win-win!

Oh my God!! Your library has all that!!!! I am beyond shocked. I haven't been this shocked since....never. The last time I was at a public library was in 2005 I think. I had no idea all these changes were happening! First thing Saturday, I'm there!!! Thank You!

My library has number of magazines available via Overdrive. While I do think it's important to support magazines which are important to you, for that one-off article, your library likely has either the physical copy or online access. This isn't really free, you or your landlord are paying for your library to be able to provide this service. Even if you are outside the tax jurisdiction of a nearby town's library, a library card is quite often available at a nominal cost, my library is $50 per year for a non-resident library card. That card frequently has reciprocal privileges with other libraries.
Houston waives their fee for anyone in Texas, and only costs $40 for non-Texas residents. So, check out the library in the nearest big city in your state.

I have had a public library card for 6 decades. Wow! I'm amazed at the services your public library offers. Well so many of the younger gen don't read books, nor do they like to carry books. Technology has truly changed our world. Our local libraries have "Friends of the Library" operated by volunteers. Its a great way to buy used books, DVDs, puzzles, etc. for fraction of new ones. My local libraries also offer Hoopla, Libby, and Boundless App. It has a computer lab room, study rooms, children's section, and a classroom that can be reserved for meetings or groups for example a Needlecraft group, etc.

I spent much of my time at the library as a youngster. I loved the squeky old wood floors, stern helpful library ladies, card catalogs, globes, and all the books filled with adventure and mystery. For the last decade, I've read primarily literature. I have found it to be a very rewarding pastime. Our library has a small store within the library that sells used books for a song. I have a wonderful home library now, and every couple years reread a classic and always take something new away. I listen to a podcast called Hardcore Liturature with is absolutely delightful !

Fav thing about my library is the audio selections of books on tapes. On my vacation last summer I listened to several my fav author’s latest books, listened to wine for dummies, and even one on how to prepare for retirement. And free. Cheers, great video 5 stars

You are preaching to the choir here. My husband and I both were librarians, so are big fans. Our local library in Cabot, Arkansas rents fishing rods. When we lived in Fairport, NY years ago the library would let you check out framed artwork. So cool. That being said, we pay a non resident charge to use the bigger library system centered in Little Rock, Arkansas also. Well worth the money. Carole

One more trivia fact: The trucking industry accounts for a significant number of audiobooks being read. Truckers can download from anywhere if they get a card from their local library and sometimes from a city that they travel to frequently. Authors make comments at times thanking their truckin' readers. And the narrators of the novels become embedded in the hearts of their listeners, too. Let us know who you like to listen to.

    • @keelienne

I have also had a library card since I was 6 years old (about 50 years now). I LOVE going to the library! It is my safe space. I hang out there to read the newspaper (the real paper one), browse for books and magazines and movies. I borrow audiobooks and request physical books from any library within my city. It keeps the clutter and costs down since I don’t buy many books. I also attend online yoga classes and will try out their book club some day. I have also used it on occasion for a clean public washroom or to hang out during bad weather days while I wait for something or someone. It has free public wifi and I can bring a coffee.

I started using the library when I was 4 years old and continued using it until Covid hit. All my books came from the library or charity shops (here in the UK). I ordered from Amazon during the lockdowns and it was wonderful to get newly published books so quickly......and they didn't have the remnants of someone's dinner stuck to the pages! When the library reopened, the hours were drastically cut to save money and it also no longer stocks newspapers and magazines. It now seems quite soulless so I no longer go. Your library sounds .......amazing! I think the future lies in libraries being resource centres and information hubs if they are to survive.

I have volunteered and been on our local library board over the years. I live in a smaller town, but with a good board and volunteers, you can help bring to your library what larger cities have in their libraries. People should get involved, and library's need your voting support, too, so everyone has access to things that may not be available to them in their hometown. I love book discussion groups, craft groups, programs on just about anything you can think of, used book sales, Library of Free Things, transfer station for my old VHS tapes, meeting rooms, quiet reading room, large print materials and tools, and even when they don't have an answer to questions I have, they access it for me on the Internet in their free Computer areas. Wonderful resource and great money saver. Thank you for making folks aware of these gems right in our own towns. People in our state can use any public library, not just the one by them.

I've been using Hillsborough County Public Library resources (Tampa area) for over 12 years. Hoopla and Libby (formerly Overdrive) have more audiobooks, Kindle books, magazines, movies, and videos than anyone could use in a lifetime. And everything is free because I live in the same county as the library. I have paid for non-resident library cards, too. Some are only a few dollars a year in North Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, etc. You may run into issues with new publications by well-known authors and find the hold times are very lengthy ("Your hold is number 170 out of 200."), but I listen to so many that most of the time I have to renew my holds. And what I consider the biggest factor is that the library renews its budget every year based on usage, so I'm helping them justify all the 'free' stuff.

We live in a small east TN town. Our librarians are doing their best on a frayed shoestring budget. I miss having a really great library. I use the Libby app ALL THE TIME! I have a library card for my local TN library. We live on the TN-KY-VA state lines. The KY town library just through the tunnel lets us have their card for a one time nominal fee, so I added that to Libby. My son is in TX so I added his card to my Libby account. Now I have access to the Libby catelogs of 3 states 😁📖📚🎧

Having lived in west Tennessee for 17 years my experience that library system was ideal. The few times I had to wait for a particular book or author was very rare and the selection was so good. My Florida experience has not been comparable. Where TN was a statewide network and multi state as well, the hunt for books was always successful. Here the dark ages of networking seem somewhat to be preferred. I have found that the upsurge of audiobooks on You Tube makes up for this bump in the road. And unlike TN, FL libraries are stuffed with boilerplate occult, romance and psuedo investigator lightweight stuff.

Great video! I've been using the library to check out ebooks for quite some time. And where I live, my library has a service called Kanopy which is similar to your Hoopla for movies. Back to books - I used to check out book-books from the library a lot but one year for mother's day, my son gave me a Kindle reader. That's when I discovered I can check out ebooks thru the library. Which is AWESOME because I can enlarge the font of the book for these old eyes! And I can bring all my books with me and pick up right where I left off via Kindle app on my phone. I know my library has a scanner and computers I can use but I don't think mine has equipment to loan - I'll have to look into that!

I love listening to your videos and I take in all the advice you have to offer. The only farthest south I have been is Kentucky, but should I ever be near your area, I would so enjoy, my husband and I sitting down and having a cup of coffee (or tea for my hubby- he doesnt like coffee) and having a chat IRL (in real life). On my way to the library today. When someone recommends a book I go online and reserve it. They pull (or interlibrary loan) what I've ordered and I just swing by and grab it from the desk. Free and easy. No clutter of read books hanging about.

Would you please give a ball park figure of mint mobile fees on top of the base plan. I’m guessing perhaps $15 - $30? I just know my Verizon is $46 Verizon fees plus taxes & service fees in addition to the ‘per line’ charge. TIA

There are no extra fees. If you go to their website and look at their plans, that’s the full price.

So is Mint Mobile a GSM network?

I don’t know GSM. 🤷‍♂️. It rides on the backbone of T-Mobile.

What an awesome library! I've used Libby for years and highly recommend. Need to see if my library offers Hoopla.
