Retired friends say it takes a year of just sleeping and napping and getting your energy back after all those decades of work. The next year is spent fostering your interests, continue getting your strength back, and doing self-care and exercise etc. So it really takes two years to get the energy for this next chapter of your life called retirement. Walk 15 minutes a day even, the nature is healing. Set a time to meet up with a friend at the end of the week so you have something to look forward to…

For years I said when I retired I would get up early, sit on the front porch with coffee and wave at everyone going to work. In these 9 yrs, I haven't done that once. 😊 But I've had peaceful, quiet, stressless coffee sipping hours daily. It's truly wonderful to be at this part of my life's journey. Blessings to all.

And here I am...its confusion at it best....
I have returned to my daily journaling habit...that gives me a sense of satifaction after the day's end. I made a sweet downsized nest for myself and am loath to leave it, thanking heaven I found grocery delivery!!! My vision of retiring was simply not having to leave home and I have toys like journaling supplies and equipmwn, a sewing machine and fabric and gardening supplies and heirloom seeds...what I struggle with is the permission to accept the free time...its ok to not go to work...if I could grasp that concept, Id be good to go...

I now get up at 6 AM, instead of 4:30. And it does take a year or so to adjust being retired. I keep busy with my hobbies and continue to organize the house each day.

You made some good suggestions. Retirement requires planning in almost all areas of our lives, but it is also something we ease into. An important area that I didn’t hear mentioned was friends. I didn’t realize how many of my friends were work friends and when I retired, those relationships change significantly. Some good ways to build up a set of new friends might include volunteering, going to the Y, attending church functions, and taking advantage of programs at the local senior center. Friends are as vital to our health as diet and exercise.

I retired on my 65th birthday, which is now nearly 11 years ago. Since retiring, I have started an eBay business to move "stuff" out of our house and generate money for conservation and environmental education projects. I have created and manage 5 blogs, all connected to some hobby that I enjoy, like family history, photography, nature hikes, conservation landscape management. I started a UA-cam channel that I really would like to do more with over the coming months. I walk every day for at least 2 miles. Finally, I have written a few books in the past and I have a couple in the works at present. Other than that, I am not keeping too busy. LOL

Definitely took this one to heart as I am on retirement countdown till the end of June! I did agree to stay on part time (my own hours) through the summer to help train and digitize years of paper files. I figured it would be a good transition while I get used to my new budget plus I can go to our beautiful gym complex ,which I seldom had time to during my working life that seemed to control every minute. I think I will refer back to this talk often! Thanks so much!

This is all excellent advice. I have been on social security for 14 years and while there is no longer a job to go to, I can't say that I have ever "retired". There is so much out there to do, to learn, and to enjoy, that living life to the fullest is not retirement. The absolute #1 step for a successful retirement is to plan for it when you are young. Don't wait until you are 50 to think about saving for retirement. My husband had good jobs but did not make more than slightly over an average wage. I was a stay at home mom for 15 years. At age 40 we started a business and were living below the poverty line with 3 kids for 3 years. We ran that business for 25 years together but never made more than a modest income, well below what a working couple would make. What we did do was to live frugally and to save and invest 10-15% of every paycheck. One should not underestimate the value of time. Start saving for retirement when you are young and you will have the means to enjoy a full retirement where you are free to travel and do the things you have dreamed of. You won't need that Walmart greeter job to make ends meet.

I’ve also been retired a year. I went crazy and sold everything, then moved to México. I am truly living my best life, up at sunrise, walking 10,000 steps a day in our beautiful parks, taking Spanish classes, hanging out with friends. I love being retired and I’m so happy I did it while I am young enough to enjoy every second of it. My health is much better than it was when I was working 60-70 hours a week.

Great advice! I found that after I retired my Doctors would nonchalantly ask me what I do with my day. I think they want to make sure you are not isolated. My standard and truthful answer is “whatever I want”. I struggled at first with productivity and my son told me I had worked over 40 years and I deserved to chill. Now productivity means getting the trash out on time for pickup, occasionally vacuuming and getting the laundry done before I run out of underwear. Seriously, one suggestion is to always accept invitations from your friends. They made need it as much as you.

We are about 8 years older than you Tim but find it is helpful to still have paid work, about one day a week, as well as hobbies and book discussion, church. It gives us some structure and we get more done the other days.
It would be great if you could work at a camera store, maybe? Carole

I went back to school, spent time painting, and joined a writing group for starters. Thanks to MS, I've had to either find or create recipes for foods I can tolerate. Feels like I could be a professional "food label reader" as I get a lot of questions on whether things are safe to consume. There are always things to do. Exercise is key and sometimes very difficult with the tropical heat! Thankfully I'm back to my high school weight with help from the intermittent fasting.

Very good advice... I'll try to remember it 20 years from now.. as I am only almost 43... But . I will say mindfulness and self care is still important while you are working- just so you can get through the work week. Already now , I journal, try to spend time with nature and enjoy a bath every now and then and even watercolor. I either do some of these things early in the morning or on the weekends. Without doing this now, I would be a mess .. so... Looks like I will already know how to do a few things when I retire. ;) thank you for your knowledge. I appreciate it all the time.

“Looking at my surroundings without judgement” is something I need to practice. I am not retired yet, but it will be a reality after next academic year. I am not happy with how I “keep house”. It motivates me to spend more hours at my office, sadly. I yearn for the day where my home is clean and orderly. I will be able to clean and organize my partner’s habits without frustration or anger. I will be able to start a project that is not stopping when the semester starts. It may not be a reality for all but it is for me. Thank you. ❤

I’ll retired in late August 2024, not with a grand incomes. However, I have prepared a plan to do the things I’ve wanted to do. I want to learn how to use a sewing machine and learn to sew, crochet, learn to swim and drawing. I’m going to do part-time job, according to my schedule. I do love to read and I’m not going to stop learning. All of those advices that you’ve given are excellent examples for all of us. May the Lord bless you. Thank you.🙏

Tim, I laughed when I heard your schedule when you were working. Mine was also a crazy schedule when I worked. My job included long days where I worked in the day, attended a lot of meetings in the evening as well as activities on the weekends. It was difficult to have one week off for vacation. When I had a doctor or dentist appointment I could easily fall asleep in the chair waiting for the doctor to come in. Thank goodness those years are well behind me.

I retired two years ago and truly don’t know how I had time to work! LOL. I do have a fun job….school nurse one day a week. After many years as a RN manager for hospice I find great joy with these little humans. My husband and I both have moms who need our time and support. The two productive things that I have done since my retirement from education two years ago is to exercise and take care of my grandsons when needed. I am so blessed that I have become an integral part of their lives. The one thing that I need is to create some friendships. I substitute teach every now and then, but I need to become part of a community of adults. I am working on that. I did join a community center that my grandsons also go to for their swimming lessons. Financially, my husband and I did plan strategically. We are debt free and are just starting to plan some trips, although he has a couple more years of work. Thanks for this video. It has been so helpful.

I love your videos. You have such a calming and thoughtful way of presenting your material and I’m sure that many will appreciate your information and what has worked for you along with a number of suggestions for others to try.
I retired two years ago and have loved the fact that I no longer have to attend meetings that are a waste of time and always having the sense that the same discussion was constantly being rehashed without an actual resolution ever happening. I talk to friends that are still working and it sounds like a soap opera. I know that if I was to go back, everyone would still be on the same treadmill discussing the same things as when I was there. To clarify, I worked in government and the process is always slow, especially when the legislature is involved.
So today, I’m enjoying the freedom to do what I want when I want to. I have a number of different friend groups and we’re always off to lunch, dinner, or some adventure. In the end, do what makes you happy. I am.

I understand that - as in my conversation with a costco gas attendant - that an experience of distraction is profound and, as her daughter has expressed to her, " the planets are misaligned." Fat finger made me send that message prematurely. Ironically, I'm ok with the mess that these words communicated. My days go better when I understand that to be an adventurer in retirement in this precise moment in history is better than simply bellying up and becoming a basketcase. Other than this peculiar headspace, I enjoy baking bicuits and eating blueberries with icecream. Purpose? To be profoundly grateful for an amazing journey in life...to have respect for God, and find creative ways to simplify the burdens of others, if I'm gifted with that ability. Sorry for this weirdness..."Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks."❤

My retirement was forced on me because of the pandemic. I worked for almost 32 years as an educator. Never thought that March 13 would be my last day at my job. Yes, we had classes over the computer but it wasn't the same.
My life fell apart. My adult children left but not before one robbed me. I lost hope. Going to classes or senior centers, isn't going to do it for me. You have to drive. Losing my car meant I lost my freedom.
One learns what family is. Mine abandoned me. If it wasn't for my Catholic faith, I would have killed myself a long time ago. Knowing the pandemic was purposely created, didn't help. So, now I have to start all over. Retirement is supposed to be a time of enjoyment, but I have no joy. I had to accept what was given to me. So one day at a time. I have a UA-cam channel but I struggle to even post a video. Why am I telling you this? I've seen a lot of retirement videos, many with families. But I think I am a drop in the bucket of those facing retirement alone. My plans died during the pandemic. Facing life alone was not in my game plan. But I take one day at a time. If I draw one picture, or paint on canvas, I have accomplished something. Retirement means reinventing myself and letting go of my plans of raising a grandchild whom I will never know. 😢
I am happy for you. I enjoy your videos. But every retirement isn't a 1,2,3 project.
    It's life.

I'm sorry for the difficulties you've had! Maybe you can put yourself out there as a tutor? Homeschool kids even need tutors at times, you could contact HmeSchl groups in your area and let them know that you tutor.

That's my current schedule you describe. I'm 53 and still have quite some time to go workwise. I wonder if it will be possible to actually retire at all in some fashion with the changing demographics. Still I can dream can't I?

Idk if I can handle working another 20-25 years. I’m already burned out 😣 Hoping to retire early somehow some way.
