This suddenly brought to mind that terrifying Twilight Zone episode about the last man on earth surrounded by all the books. He was perfectly happy until he broke his glasses. The idea chilled me through. I love my books too.
Every so often I find myself coming back to this video. There's something about it that's both relaxing and fascinating at once. It also inspires me to want to read even more, which can't be a bad thing!
@720pblog Glad it connected with you. I was rapping for quite a while with no questions, just wandering around, and Sergey pulled it into 10 minutes. I hear it's being used in the USA for relaxation therapy! Which surprises me - and delights me too. Wishing you happy days
"The books Demanded to be incorporated into my word and Invaded my bedroom!" That's happened to me multiple times and now my bedroom is going to be my library as well as my place to sleep.
Thanks so much for the film and voice of your personal library (and to Sergey Stefanovich for the thoughtful panning and editing). "Worlds beyond worlds" as you say, "Books are an expression of freedom". and yes "the 1st thing dictators do is control the books we may read". A delightful tour.
Difficult say - a few thousand - but it probably looks more because the flat is not large. I cleared out a lot of paperbacks some years ago, so those here are mostly hardback and one's I'd want to keep.
If people are governed by fear of catastrophe, they wouldn't bother to get up in the morning. You have a choice - be on the side of life or of death. I choose life. It's more fun
Impressive collection! I always wonder how many books people with these collections have read. Just reading one of these shelves would probably fill one with a stupendous amount of knowledge and wisdom.
6:50 ff - “THE GREEKS AND THE IRRATIONAL - that’s a good book, by Mr. Dodds... God, the Greeks were the most amazing people that ever walked the earth; they invented everything that’s adult in human life...nobody else did: everything that is sane in our world comes from the Ancient Greeks.” - As a rather puerile and slightly insane Greek, I thank you. Only just stumbled onto your excellent channel and immediately subscribed. Greetings from Delphi! 🏛
Upon viewing I thought at first some mad man had broken into my home with a viewing camera at some point. Then I began to realize I actually have a long lost twin out there somewhere across the pond. Loved seeing your flat with all your friends, I would feel very comfortable there. Thank you for inviting us in and giving us such an enjoyable tour. Instant subscriber!
I wish far more library/bookshelf tours were like this one. Just someone talking about their books and other bits and bobs, not feeling like they have to put on a show, or tell you how fantastic every book is. I wonder how Mr Fallowell chose the books for his library. I know it appears to be very random, but when you look closer there are definite themes and collections.
This gentleman is a true aesthete. It is a rare gift to truly luxuriate in the imaginal realm. Cloistered and confined by a multitude of books, yet paradoxically exposed to the sheer multiplicity of images and feelings, sensations and thoughts. Time steeped in memories like dark tea and as ephemeral as violet-tinted incense smoke and the density of saffron cigarettes. We dream of antiquity, but the ancient has never departed. It is to be birthed continually in the present. Thank you for this video. We would have been friends in some other lifetime!
It is amazing how the mere glimpse of book that one has read will allow the observer to conjure up images and memories that will be totally unique to the reader. The quick shot of the name Malcolm Lowry on one of the books in this video for example will mean very little to someone who has never read Under The Volcano, but to a person who has, the ensuing reverie could lead one to no longer listen to the outside world.
Love to watch this again on the edge of winter. Looking forward to my own little library coming into its own again to carry across to another year. "Open a book and you open a door".
Very enjoyable narration. By the way, the UA-cam counters often get "stuck". I don't believe they are always real-time. Rather they cache the view count somehow and periodically update them.
A wonderful view of what I epitomise to be a Home Library. An astounding and outstanding collection. A bibliophile and readers inner sanctum. If only my collection were as organised as this one.
"Having the answers is the kiss of death." I like that, such a passionate way of looking at the unknown. The video is fantastic, the cinematography also nicely accentuates the warm feeling that any place so filled with books inevitably projects.
Thank you for showing your library. I like the way you organise the books by language and region. "We did not create ourselves". Spot on! Ps 100: verse 2a: Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; ... And, O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8 As a student of French/Francophone literature, the Gospel of St John really spoke to me.
A truly splendid library, and a truly splendid narration. Thank you. Have just been reading the account of your search for Bapsy Pavry, and the library at Ooty, where I gather they have recently held a literary festival. Good to know it's still going strong.
2:07 "... they may not all be to my taste, or I may not agree with what they have to say, but they could all do a #brilliant #intellectual #firework #display..." 6:21 "... #respect ... Sometimes respect can be a very suffocating emotion. We hear a lot about it, today... BUt... Respect is a by-product of something more profound, I think... When You turn it into an objective itself, I think... it [becomes a] pointless [gesture, pose or attitude?]..."
I really enjoyed listening to you in this video. Such an intelligent fellow and I love to read too! Your story was refreshing and made me smile :) P.S. - The way you talk and sound in general reminds me of Alan Rickman which is also a plus XD
I was really charmed by this film-you sound so nice, and articulate, which is comforting, when one has been in the real world all day-also your beautiful book collection made me look around my rooms with pride,as they too are being devoured by books and ephemera-and also like my friend David Herkt, who you know through facebook-one of the most widely-read fellows I know...Thanks!
@MrDuncanFallowell Another mystery to spice up our lives. Since I came here quite after your observation, and watched the whole thing mesmerized (even going so far as to comment) did the number change?. Have I broken the spell? Or only plunged us further into the abyss of adding zeros?
I saw in the video a book on Andrei Tarkovsky. I wonder what the speaker thinks of his films, seeing as they are 'meditative' in ways that movies just aren't; his films are in that sense akin to books, I think.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing it; so many interesting musings...but why do modern Greeks seem to have lost their way? or is it the case that the rest of Europe is trying to lead them down the wrong path?
@danfolkus No, Dan, I'm afraid you haven't broken the freeze. I've asked UA-cam about it but of course they don't speak to us. Maybe the 'likes' will overtake the 'views' eventually
This was an interesting video to say the least. That aside, I would very much suggest the book, "Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments", by Geerhardus Vos.
The book Did not just hapoen, it was created by someone. When you look at the vast universe it just did not happen. It was created.Do not become to Wise Well you may become within yourself wiser than God himself, so you think

"I can't stop acquiring book"
I finally found a friend.
You posted this drivel 3 years ago. How's the friendship been treating you?
@@JohnVKaravitis Gottem..
Why do I keep coming back and watching this? It's at least once a day.
I could listen to him talk for days
I love the quote, "to open a book is to open a door".
Such a wonderful cozy atmosphere. This man could read a phone book and it would hold my attention. Love a British accent!
this is the best library-movie on youtube i have ever seen
HAHAHA
Every so often I find myself coming back to this video. There's something about it that's both relaxing and fascinating at once. It also inspires me to want to read even more, which can't be a bad thing!
I’ve watched this numerous times during the years. And many more times to come.
'this is why the electronic book means nothing to me'......Beautiful.....'A thing of beauty, is a joy forever'....a book.....a thing.....
@720pblog Glad it connected with you. I was rapping for quite a while with no questions, just wandering around, and Sergey pulled it into 10 minutes. I hear it's being used in the USA for relaxation therapy! Which surprises me - and delights me too. Wishing you happy days
As for 'read' - about 100 per year, but quite a few of my books are reference or poetry or illustrated art & architecture, so these I dip into
"The books Demanded to be incorporated into my word and Invaded my bedroom!"

Fully agreed that electronic books are not books
There's still a lot more room there for more books!
Difficult say - a few thousand - but it probably looks more because the flat is not large. I cleared out a lot of paperbacks some years ago, so those here are mostly hardback and one's I'd want to keep.
I watch this video every day. Perhaps because of the open door quality that allows me to see books the way you see them.
If people are governed by fear of catastrophe, they wouldn't bother to get up in the morning. You have a choice - be on the side of life or of death. I choose life. It's more fun
It doesn't matter how high is your intellect, it matters what you do with that intellect and how it affects the world in general.
Impressive collection! I always wonder how many books people with these collections have read.
Just reading one of these shelves would probably fill one with a stupendous amount of knowledge and wisdom.

I found this video on soothetube because your voice is supposed to be relaxing. How can I fall asleep listening to such an interesting individual?

You speak with a remarkable eloquence, I wish you good health sir.

Came across your video by chance and could not stop watching and listening. I could almost smell the books. Wonderful. Take care.
Very enjoyable narration. By the way, the UA-cam counters often get "stuck". I don't believe they are always real-time. Rather they cache the view count somehow and periodically update them.

A lovely retreat, Duncan. I find that many of your observations mirror my own.
that's marvellous, thank-you so much for telling me, and I hope you've had some gorgeous experiences recently as you swim through books
"Having the answers is the kiss of death."
I like that, such a passionate way of looking at the unknown. The video is fantastic, the cinematography also nicely accentuates the warm feeling that any place so filled with books inevitably projects.
Well, I WAS planning to make my own bookshelf tour video. I bow to you, and thank you for this.
Thanks for sharing this, Chris!
Well, I take the rather romantic view that, once past the basics, everyone is unique. Weird however can be a double-edged sword.
This muted cinematography and voice over is brilliant, lovely art.
Other people have said that. I interviewed him once - and we sound quite distinct on the tape. Glad you enjoyed it
I would love to live in your apartment with all those books !! I think I would be the happiest man on earth. I don’t need anything else but books.
6:00 the reasons why he loves literature ❤
This video is like a yoga meditation! I love the space we get to inhabit and as others have mentioned the narration is sublime!
Reading and writing I have always loved especially poetry and history.
Love the video, Duncan!!!! Thanks so much for posting it.

Ha . . . my old college is also interested . . but the books aren't going anywhere just yet
The book is a portal into another persons mind. Their thoughts, desires and a myriad other dimensions of the mindscape. Book 33
I think the camera could have been a little closer to its subjects of interest.
Had to get Satyrday after watching this regularly.
A truly splendid library, and a truly splendid narration. Thank you. Have just been reading the account of your search for Bapsy Pavry, and the library at Ooty, where I gather they have recently held a literary festival. Good to know it's still going strong.
A little treasure.

@alexander3699 Thank-you. I love Sergey's focal texture on this and his warm impressionistic colouration.

At 1:56 a wonderful set of books (Bergson, Croce, Rimbaud, etc.) are shown that spoke to me. What is the publisher/series?
I wish I had the time to read more, I collect books and dream about being able to sit down and actually reading them. 21st century life for you.
You have the time to read more - it's more how you allocate the time you are currently NOT reading that needs adapting.
What wonderful video and words.❤
Duncan, I love this video very much. How many books would you say you have read, roughly?
When you think, "Holy cow, I have too many books." The knock at the door will be me, ready to collect.
@MrDuncanFallowell Another mystery to spice up our lives. Since I came here quite after your observation, and watched the whole thing mesmerized (even going so far as to comment) did the number change?. Have I broken the spell? Or only plunged us further into the abyss of adding zeros?
@Domaflotchee Many thanks - and three cheers for three dimensions! Best, Duncan
What's a magical home library 💚
I saw in the video a book on Andrei Tarkovsky. I wonder what the speaker thinks of his films, seeing as they are 'meditative' in ways that movies just aren't; his films are in that sense akin to books, I think.
Yes, I love Tarkovsky's work - and indeed virtually all the avant garde film-makers of the 20th century
I think maybe I'll do a library tour video of my own someday.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing it; so many interesting musings...but why do modern Greeks seem to have lost their way? or is it the case that the rest of Europe is trying to lead them down the wrong path?
@jorgep1 Well, that's rather what I hoped. All the best from a damp London

Am I the only who thinks he sounds like Peter O’Toole?
@marktech101 Mark - thanks for taking the trouble to leave a message - much appreciated. Is my ratio amazing? You're tempting fate!
@justjenny100 thank you - but dare you press like?
Now that is a home
Over 1000 hits this past month - nothing registered - STILL on 1,770 - does UA-cam hate libraries?
@adrianomcosta Thank-you, Adrian. In winter I dream of Brazil! Best wishes to you
This was an interesting video to say the least. That aside, I would very much suggest the book, "Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments", by Geerhardus Vos.
MAGNIFIQUE
Duncan, can we get you on Radio 4? No wait, it's gone to the dogs. Something else...
The BBC refuses to have me on. My English is too good. And the producers are crashingly conformist, terrified I might make an original remark.
THE VIEW COUNTER HAS BEEN STUCK ON 1,770 for weeks and weeks!!!
This is wonderful! Quite an amazing like-dislike ratio as well.
OMMGGGG A DREAM
Ah! It's counting again; that's more like it
I daren't press dislike!
I’ve got about 2,500 books in my home - but I can’t find any of them: I live with hoarders.
Lets be friends.
Come to the States. Destroy Jeopardy.

That's a bloodless museum, not a library.
