- Greg and Finn venture out on another outdoor overnight fishing trip, looking to catch another BIG burbot, his FAVORITE fish! He's cooking up delicious wood-fired barbecue chicken and picking a variety of edible berries along the way.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

Thanks for putting out this video. People don't realize that fishing is not always a guarantee you will catch a fish. It's the adventure of getting out and trying that counts.

Your improvised net reminded me of my Dad, who was a real bushman. Up till his mid 60's, when his knees gave out, he used to back pack into the wilderness on the BC/Yukon border and live off the land. One time when he was about 20 miles out of Merritt on a remote disused logging road, his fan belt broke. He dug up fine cedar roots and braided himself a belt that enabled him to limp back to town. When he got to the repair shop they offered to do his repair for free if he'd give them the belt for their trophy wall. Now my Dad liked to embellish stories so we never quite believed him. However, more than 10 years later I had a breakdown on the Coquihalla Connector and got towed into the same shop where I saw his belt on display. lol

Huckleberry Finn 👍great video as always Greg, for burbot I use a 7 foot fishing rod with at least a 10lb line, a flat sinker with a bead to protect the knot, a swivel or snap swivel and a fluorocarbon leader around 6 foot with a size 4 bait holder hook, I’ve used spam with great results and smaller fish, I find they are easier to catch in autumn and winter. 👍
That was a 'gnarly' fire you set up to roast the chicken. It was a highly improbable campsite to me. You made it all work.

Dear Mr Ovens; I found your channel on day 4 I think of your 30 day challenge with Mr Fowler. Time and again I keep coming back and rewatching the decent wholesomeness of your vidoes. Your hair is greyer now and Finn has grown from itsy bitsy pup to a fine young man
However every single time I need to refocus it is your work I review. A calm expert who appreciates that getting things just so can take time and that good enough is good enough. BBQ or Roast Chicken is a very popular dish here in Australia & when I went camping with my USA mate & his family he whipped out a little surprise with a Rotisserie Chicken on a stick - bloody amazing with the smokey flavour :)

I am glad you made your own fishing net because it would have been a waste of time and money going back into town to buy one then fishing and catching nothing it would have been cool to see a burbot catch and cook as we all know you love eating your favourite fish and sharing with Finn.Anyway it’s great to see you Greg and can’t wait to see your next adventure all the best from Bonnie

I've never eaten burbot but when I saw that you were going to be fishing for them my mouth started to water.
First of all thank you for sharing apart of your life with us Gregg in all the videos. It must take a lot of effort , courage and discipline to put yourself out there full time for the viewers. Also big respect for Zach Fowler .

One of my favourite episodes was 30 day survival in the Trees .
It got me thinking , I would like you and Zach to work on or think about in possible project in the future
Basic Open plan outdoor living cabins with solar or hydro . Big fire pits . Log beds . Basic living all built with logs and also , farming chickens , growing the wild plants that thrive in the area aswell as what vegetables you are able to grow in the rockies ......would be amazing to see you both create a self made self sustainable place that is in the rockies and maybe have yearly events for 2 weeks 10 people can come and learn hands on and experience and help maintain the educational culture you share and protect the environment learning to live off the land
