In the country where I live frogs actually are protected species, so it could be a calming thing to know it was allowed there.. and could prevent angry comments about it..

Man stumbling onto an old cabin is so cool, you see a glimpse into the life of some other outdoorsperson who sought the same natural tranquility that you do, but like a century in the past. I'm not sure if it's sad or awesome that we don't know anything about that person, and that all that stands in their remembrance is a few rotten logs stacked up in a corner together.

This takes me back many years to when I was a teen. My best friend and I took extended "survival trips", sometimes as long as a week. They were treks where we set out in the woods nowhere near trails. Distance didn't matter.... we continued on but foraging was our main occupation. We never relied on fish, but they were targets of opportunity at times (fish traps work). Electronics simply did not exist.... except for computers that took up multiple floors at the university.... and whatever they used on Apollo. GPS, satellite communication, cellular.... were not even thought of back then.... Who would have dreamed that we would have a thing called internet..... or digital photography.... tape recorders were big and bulky and expensive, as were cameras. The one "cheat" we resorted to was the Svea 123 stove. Not because we were not quite skilled at starting fires, but because we believed in leaving NO SIGN of our having been there. Already even back then, the popular places were littered with fire rings. "take only pictures, leave only footprints". We navigated with map and compass...... Not topo... we couldn't afford that. I owned every survival manual and book I could lay my hands on...... military survival manuals were easily found in the Army Navy stores..... there was no way to find books that you couldn't find locally...no internet or Amazon. I read every book Euell Gibbons wrote... that I could find. Burton Spiller's book Northland Castaways (CR 1957) was I think what inspired our first survival foray. Many of the areas we went into had nowhere near the abundance and ease of gathering seen here.... and we even ventured into "high desert" survival.... though you have to follow water courses, and due to relative scarcity of wild edible plants killing warm blooded game often became the challenge..... but rattlesnakes also make good food! The animals you eat, or use for bait are prey animals.... They exist to be a meal for something else. There is no "happily ever after" Disney existence for them.... They are part of the food chain...... and know it. Predators kill to live, and kill without remorse..... We humans have the luxury of delegating killing to others. Predators often kill with shocking "cruelty", and absolutely no sensitivity to the feelings and pain of the prey. Watch a pack of wolves or coyotes kill. I was once a hunter, but found no joy in watching the light go out of something's eyes..... I can and do kill things as needed..... but it is a necessity, not a "sport" for me..... as a rural person. With all the "wonderful" technology we have available like the Inreach, and cell phones, I still backpack solo into remote parts of the Rockies, often telling nobody that I'm going anywhere at all, and have never considered carrying "technology" into the wilderness.... It simply does not belong as far as I'm concerned. You make sure you do not get hurt.... many decisions you make solo have survival as a significant consideration knowing nobody is coming to look for you..... there is no carelessness because there is no rescue...... it adds a spice that would be lacking if you could simply push a button.
One of the first books I read as a minion was The Hatchet, inspired me to want to run away and leave everything behind and I was like 8 years old. Anyways didn't run away, but spent every weekend with our step father camping, hiking, hunting, telling ghost stories and eating smores. Best times and no tech has ever come close to those memories.
true, but you break one of the most crucial survival rules... always inform someone where you intend to go in case you actually do go missing. They at least some base information on where to start searching.
A tip for fish soup, look for wild onions and or garlic to help cut the fishy flavor. Also, most importantly, panfry the fish parts until light golden brown in the soup pot first and the taste will improve tremendously.

Judging by the shape, size, and type of those remaining logs, that house/shelter was made about 100-150 years ago. A family or group of people lived in that very same spot. By the size of that lake it would of easily supported them. Winters would of be tough, but the other seasons would of been amazing -- just like your trip there.

First video of your channel. And I have to say man this is awesome. You teach really well and in detail and I actually learned some things. Also your humor and just all around good vibes really bring the video together. Subscribed now! And I love how you thanked the fish and the frog for what they gave, people don’t think about it much but it is respectful, considering it is a life. Most people don’t count it because they don’t have feelings, but they are still alive and a part of the circle. Much love!
I always put a keyring on my ferro rods. Then attach the ferro rod, via the keyring, to a carabiner. I typically have a cheap $2 folding knife, on a keyring, attached to the carabiner as well. I can attach the whole thing, via the carabiner, to my belt loop. I will keep a second set attached to my backpack. I also will have a more extensive fire kit in a pouch that will have at least 3 different ways to start fire. I am a big believer in ensuring that I have fire when I am out in the wild.
In case people were wondering, I also had an emergency fire starter kit (including lighters and fire starter) and first aid kit. Which I chose not to use as it wasn't part of the challenge I set myself. Hope y'all have a great day

This is the most I’ve enjoyed a UA-cam video in ages. Living in the centre of Birmingham England it’s unlikely I’ll ever get to do anything close to this unless I moved; Thanks to the small amount of land this country does have being completely ruined or privatised. It’s a really nice change of pace to see life through its purest perspective.

Beautifully said bud
One of the first books I read as a minion was The Hatchet, inspired me to want to run away and leave everything behind and I was like 8 years old. Anyways didn't run away, but spent every weekend with our step father camping, hiking, hunting, telling ghost stories and eating smores. Best times and no tech has ever come close to those memories.

Judging by the shape, size, and type of those remaining logs, that house/shelter was made about 100-150 years ago. A family or group of people lived in that very same spot. By the size of that lake it would of easily supported them. Winters would of be tough, but the other seasons would of been amazing -- just like your trip there.

You're an inspiration! What an excursion to trek through! Well done, Xander!
