Background:
Back in 1985, BMW launched a car called the M3. There was nothing else quite like it, a racer for the road with four seats and everything Munich knew about motorsport technology plumbed into the lightweight engine beneath the bonnet. Driving it was a living, raw, exhilarating experience - the kind of thing that today’s sharp-suited M3 and M4 models can’t quite duplicate, for all their extra power and sophistication. But here perhaps, is a BMW that can, the M2.
The Munich maker’s M division needs this car. Since its turn to turbocharging back in 2011 with the fifth generation M5, its products have become more sophisticated but arguably at the same time, slightly less… involving. New generation turbo engines certainly achieve the target of extra speed with greater efficiency, but they develop that power so low in the rev range that whole layers of electronics are needed to keep things in check. As a result, in a modern M3, M4 or M5, it can be hard for real enthusiasts to feel quite the sense of satisfaction they enjoyed in earlier models.
