I have a better idea. This has a 100% chance of finding diamonds EVERY time. Just go to the center of the clay patch, dig down, and dig out levels 5-16 of the entire chunk.

Sadly ,This Method will not work in 1.17+ ( if u created a world on 1.16 and then updated it to 1.17+ ) IT MAY WORK ,if u directly created a new world on 1.17+ ITS NOT GOING TO WORK : ( ...And u will find lapis instead of diamonds

I was wondering why I was finding so much lapis. I guess if I ever need lapis I’m all set?
From ibxtoycat's video, Diamond distribution changed like as it would be in 1.18. (Diamonds at y level 14 to -63, mainly found -53 to -63). This distribution is making diamonds much more rare since we can't even go past y level 5. I heard there is a hotfix or emergency update to fix this. Hopefully this method still works after this fix!

I think you can dig down straight without much worrying about falling to lava or into a ravine,a cave or whatsoever, maybe block the hole where the comes(if you don't have aqua affinity) and dig 1x2 hole and use ladders and torches and it might take some time but it might help
FOR THOSE WHO ARE FINDING LAPIS INSTEAD OF DIAMOND
After going 7 blocks out going in the south direction (making sure to respect the chunk border) go 4 blocks north in swamps swamps. For rivers, after going 2 blocks out in the south direction (again after applying the rules of the chunk border stated in the video) , go blocks north 4 blocks. This is because diamonds in general spawn four blocks north of lapis veins ;)

You can try the "stand in between two blocks while digging down" trick to avoid falling in caves or lava
In 1.17.1 Java edition
- Clay in swamps: 2nd block south (if bad seed, 4th block south)
- Clay in rivers/lakes: 2nd block north
- Gravel in rivers/lakes: 6th block north
I've tested this in creative with different worlds, and this works consistently.
Note: one of the top comments said that gravel in rivers you need to dig down on the 4th block north. BUT it's incorrect.
I've tried doing that, but no diamonds.
After doing more tests, I found that quite often clay and gravel both spawn in the same chunk in rivers. And the 4th block north from the middle of gravel is ALWAYS the central block of clay when they spawn close to each other. And if we remember the other rule, you need to go 2 blocks north from the center of clay in rivers.
4+2=6
Basically that's why you need to go 6 blocks north from the central block of gravel in rivers.
I have tested this 6 block north gravel in rivers method numerous times. And it works even if you hit a chunk border and have to continue counting from the other side of the chunk.

@@NishchayG Yeah, you do need to check chunk borders. Press F3+G at the same time to open it up. And do it as Shulkercraft explains it at 1:57.
The only thing that changes in 1.17.1 is the number of blocks you need to count and the direction.

If you're doing the river method, clay and gravel does not have to be in the river biome. You can find diamonds in rivers and big shallow lakes as well, even when it says that biome is forest, or taiga, it does not matter (I haven't tested with other biomes, but it probably would also work in other biomes).
And big shallow lakes have a lot of gravel and clay.

Most of the things that I write in this comment section is based on my own research, reading through other comments, and doing tests myself in minecraft creative mode.
Information in the video is outdated, because with minecraft 1.17.1 update the way diamond ores are generated seem to have changed. This video provides good details on the basics of this method. The only thing that changed is how many blocks you count from the center of gravel/clay block, and the direction.

If you keep finding Lapis try this:
Mine down from the 3rd block from the center (so place 2 blocks south from the center clay, then mine down on the 3rd instead of the 7th) this works for me in the swamps!

If you are playing on 1.17 you will only ever find lapis, but you can use the lapis method and still should find some diamonds

Only problem is if you fall into lava and the water makes obsidian above your head and you can't escape, but I'm not sure if that can happen

Tried it on Creative to see how effective it is, went smooth 9 out of 10 holes there were diamonds.
Once I got to playing a normal world, I fell down countless ravines full of lava.
Would be funny to prank people on smp servers digging all swamp hole nearby and clean up so it wont look like you've done the deed.
Block up only the top block and place lava at the bottom.

That can make the "slower" diamond mining methods very much worth the effort, because you're doing two jobs at the same time - digging up stone for building, and mining out gold/iron/diamonds.

There's a catch in river clay patches in 1.17. If u don't find it straight down or 2 blocks south go 4 blocks south instead and it always always works unless its overrun by lava

The swamp clay method works in 1.17! Just face south and mine at 1 block from the centre. The chances of finding diamonds is 50-50. Cheers :)
And in rivers or non swamp shallow areas I found that 2 blocks north yields diamonds 80ish percent of the tome

if you don't have aqua infinity, you know its very annoying to tower back up, so you could put a wood plank on the top of the place you dig down, then put an upside down flint and steel on the bottom of that plank, dig down until you find the diamonds and wait, soon water will come down washing all the torches so you can pick them back up and swim out.
As soon as i heard "simple math" i knew i had to use my remaining braincells.

Instead of having to use fire res potions, I recommend turning subtitles on and then if you get lava pops, then do the safe dig down strat that is 2 wide. You can also watch for mob sounds and bat sounds if you want to be extra careful.

I tried this method twice so far, first time was great I found 8 diamonds in one spot. The second time I tried it I landed in a ravine panicked pressed Q and threw my pickaxe into the lava then, when I thought I was all good a creeper blew up behind me. No diamonds either. I am sure this works but just be careful.

Still Works in 1.17 Swamps (w/slight change). As John Ciafone mentioned in a response buried below, this system still works in 1.17 swamps. But instead of skipping 6 blocks from the center of a clay patch, just skip two blocks and dig in the third block South of the clay patch center. I've tested in a random 1.17 seed. I dug eight holes and hit or brushed up against diamonds seven times.

Kind of. I'd say 50-50. I just spend a few hours in the swamps, and had good luck digging straight down from the center of the clay patch, and if no diamonds down the center, then I just start mining away from the center for 4 blocks on Positive Z, from y = 2 to 16. Got a stack in about 3 hours!
When I'm done with a patch, I 'mark' the site with a stone block that sticks out of the swamp water to help speed things up when I look for new dig sites. Also, a boat is a must.

You can also use this method to find any ore you want too. (Except lapis) Though the distance and chances change quite a bit. Also the size of the patches for clay and gravel will say the Y level of the ores.

Works Very Well! Sometimes though instead of finding diamonds i find lapis, then i use the lapis method to find diamonds and it works too
the lapis method worked for me well and i found a 4 diamonds vein and it was worth it: find lapis and go dig 4 blocks north then strip mine until u find diamonds or if u fall in a cave then u gotta explore it for a minute

its a nice strategy for early and mid game players, but if you're late game, it would be easier to make a haste 2 beacon and insta mine stone for diamonds

If you have a big swamp with a lot of clay patches, it mightbe a good idea to put a beacon in the middle with haste to speed it up, also using riptide tridents to get out easily. This will save you time in big swamps. Fire res would be nice, but since you are already digging with water, it shouldnt be such a big problem, better safe then sorry though.
Tbh I think waterbreathing potion would be better than fire res, unless it doesn't negate the water fatigue effect but I'm sure it does. With efficiency 5 and haste beacon you'd easily get down, the only issue would be making obsidian if there is lava, though with the speed it's not the giantest burden

Finally, good reason to study maths
Before this video, I was at bedrock level mining under a riving and found a shit ton of diamonds. This video might explain why..
