  • Here is a selection of unpublished photos by Dale Mathews showcasing cars that were brought in for a very intimate car show held at the Petty Enterprises location in Randleman, NC on June 25th, 2024. This event was a celebration of 65 years of Petty Blue paint and 60 years of the 426 Hemi. Geoff Stunkard and Dale sat down to look and discuss the images from this event.
People who were invited included drag racing legends Buddy Martin, Roy Hill and Herb McCandless, who were greeted by Richard Petty personally with a touch of humor. In addition was NASCAR crew chief Dale Inman. Shown are some very special cars, including Lee Petty's 1949 Plymouth display, the Hemi-powered 1967 Belvedere GTX, the real 1970 #43 Plymouth Superbird being prepared to run at Goodwood Festival, the Championship 1972 Plymouth Road Runner, and even the 1965 43 Jr Hemi Barracuda #dragcar . Roy Hill had a 1963 Plymouth modified, Herb McCandless brought in his 1972 Dodge Demon Pro Stock, and Buddy Martin showed off his own 1965 Fury, a car that played a big role of why the Sox & Martin team became Plymouth racers in 1965!
Also shown is the 1970 Bobby Isaac Challenger, the 1971 Dodge Charger R/T with 440 and sunroof that was once the #pacecar for #charlottemotorspeedway Motor Speedway, a real 1968 Plymouth #hemi GTX convertible, stock and modified 1968 Chargers, a convertible Plymouth Superbird, a 1966 Hemi Coronet post coupe, even a Buick GSX. There was a rare #dodgetrucks transporter with #racecar, a rebodied Nichels Engineering Charger that once won a race as a Dodge #chargerdaytona with Buddy Baker driving.
Stunkard added historic pictures and artifacts to help illustrate this feature, using images from the Sox & Martin book of Drag Racing • HYG RARE 1974 Sox & Ma... as well as from the files from his Hemi Racing book.

Glad to hear it, some of the vocals were hard due to the location, but the stuff is all cool.

Man, thanks. I had 20+ hours in post-production to edit it and balance the sound, so it's great to know the work is appreciated! - Zoo

67 was Buddy Arrington. That was his old rig, and as I recall it's fairly original- meaning unmolested or restored. That family goes way back with Mopar and Petty, serious racers, but always independent, so they didn't get the press they deserved. He was Mopar all the way- ran the last Mopar in NASCAR's golden era. I think it was a Chrysler Imperial of all things? Kinda cool- only a Mopar/999 corporate blue guy could pull that one off. Thanks for sharing! This is some great stuff here. An interesting sidebar on the 1 of 11, red 426 HEMI 1966 Coronet. I'm fairly certain there are only 4 of the original 11 cars left. I had one of the 4 (blue/blue) until a year or so back. That is car shown in my "50 Years in the Making" video. Nice interview- thank you Geoff and Dale Mathews. Looking forward to the next installment from our favorite Zookeeper!

Appreciate the response. Dale stated the current owners name was also Buddy, but I had thought Arrington right away as well. And yes, he was the final Chrysler NASCAR racer in the "early era" before 2000. We've got Dale's pilot Hemi Road Runner on tap for next week.

The audio needs work I can't hardly hear anything, the pics are good but the audio ruins the enjoyment the videos.

It unfortunately had a lot of echo. I am figuring out what to do. It took lot of sound post-processing to get it as balanced as it is now.. At any rate, appreciate the feedback. Thanks-Zoo
