With 11.5-second ETs at 120 mph, the factory team of eight specially prepared 1968 Ford Mustang 428 CJs obliterated everything in their Super Stock class at the '68 NHRA Winternationals. The impact was no less forceful on the street. "The entire world will come to recognize this engine -- the 428 Cobra Jet -- at the pop of a hood," declared Motor Trend. Finally, thanks to the 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet, the competition was chasing Mustang's tail.
I was lucky enough to have owned a 1967 Corvette 427 tri power. What a machine.
When did you sell it? Bet you wish you still had it huh?
I grew up with these vehicles. The best things about them was: 1) they were affordable 2) they took a licking and kept on ticking 3) Repairs were simple and not costly.
My new 1966 Vette 327 CI 360 HP cost $4,200. My new 69 Mustang fastback 351 CI 290 HP cost $2,900. Sales tax on my 2019 F-150 5.0 $3,900
It’s amazing how much pricing has changed. It’s such a vast difference that it’s almost unbelievable! Bet you wish you had them both back.
New Corvettes are considered to be affordable as well, even at $77,000. I wonder what your annual salary was back then. One thing to remember is that our government now mandates a massive number of safety requirements that add significant cost to the bottom line.
My brother bought his leftover 68 GT500 Shelby convertible for $2900 brand new in 1969 I paid more for my motorcycles lol I wish he still had his Shelby it would be worth a cool million now
@@davepaturno4290 Scores of American males were UNION MEMBERS and got GOOD wages for the time and good benefits as well. Scores of today's workers are NOT union members and get LOW wages and low or no benefits.
@jamesbosworth4191 You can't be talking about workers in CA where minimum wage is $20 an hour. No unions are necessary. I've never joined a union, and the car companies that don't have unions have great benefits. In fact, every company I've worked for had great health and savings benefits without the need for unions.
The 1966 427 Cobra had a 12.2 second quarter mile time at 118.1 miles per hour. In 1969 Car Life magazine proclaimed the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with the 428 Cobrajet engine as the fastest 1969 production car in the world with a quarter mile time in the low 13s at 108 miles per hour. The Porsche 904 and the Ford GT 40 of the 1960's were hardly production cars. If you are including purpose built race cars like them, the Ford Fairlane 427 Thunderbolt ran an 11.61 second quarter at 124.8 miles per hour. There was a 427 Ford Falcon running in the mid 1960s that was even faster than the 427 Thunderbolt. They had to put a chain around the engine and frame because the torque was so enormous it would tear the engine mounts out of the chassis. The inclusion of these cars in this production is as silly as including the 1963 Cobra 260 but leaving out the 1966 427 Cobra which was probably the fastest actual production car of the 1960s. My two 1966 289 Mustangs had 225 horsepower and hydraulic lifters not 271 and solid lifters like some Mustang Gts. The 1965 Shelby Mustang GT 350 had 306 horsepower. Incidentally pronouncing the word Porsche with one syllable is a quick way to have your work dismissed by real car guys.
Hey, thanks for the watch Mike. Just trying to do the best we can and getting better as we make more videos.
The 427 ford thunderbolt was pulling mid 11s 1964
THANK YOU for pointing out correct way to say Porsche! (Poor-shuh).
Speaking of the Ford 428 and 427s, I have an old truck with the little brother of those engines, the FE-390, in it. It has a bigger cam ground for extra HP and torque. It kept ripping apart the left motor mount until I put a fat chain from the block to the frame on that side. I never really thought of that engine as being all that special, but it will light up the 35" tires at will, with barely any pedal. One day I was driving a newer truck with a 460 in it and kept wondering what the heck was wrong with it. Compared to my old truck, it was a complete dog. Those old FE engines were kinda stout!
I agree with everything you say, except for the Porsche issue. None of us Americans knew that the Europeans pronounced it "Porshuh".
A lot of your info bull I had 1 of the first 1966-1967 Camaros to come off the assembly line. I ran 1/4 mile at Person Country Dragway 13.8 at106 miles per hour from factory

Indeed. The FACTORY 413 Max Wedge came in 11.5-to-1 and THIRTEEN -to-One compression ratios. Ugly as sin, they were even more disgustingly fast. The Beach Boys song "Shut Down" was disproved time and time again in real life, but the lyrics wouldn't have "flowed" so well if the Super Stock Dodge were faster. Tom Hoover (Ramcharger Factory Race Team, E. Longmeadow, MA native, and "Godfather of the Hemi") told me personally that they would drive a random one over from Hamtramck and they'd turn high 12's at Detroit Raceway, and I believe him!
@@Kendallian132 Agreed, but for ONE thing. I think these cars were cool looking and just looked MEAN. As a kid, I remember them on the streets and was blown away by them. @@USCG.Brennan BTW; the Beach Boys version of Little Old Lady mentions a "426" ('64 Polara). The 260ci cobra was quick but the 427 SC Cobra was quicker than any car on your list. The Cobra 427 dragon snake ran in the 10 second range.
I'm not a Ford guy, but how could not at least mention the "427 Cobra". I can remember a claim that it was capable of a 0 to 100mph and back to 0, (0-100-0) in under 14 seconds. Seems like it might have the #1 spot nailed down.

The 1968 L023 Hemi Dart was THE fastest by a wide margin…right from the factory they ran the 1/4 mile in the low to mid tens. With a little tweaking….better slicks, racing fuel, and a dyno tune…they ran in the 9s.
Crazy to think that a car could be that fast from the factory!
@@PistonTrends the crazy part, is that even though these cars were factory built as race cars to compete in the super stock class, they were also street legal. They had a horn, lights, turn signals, and a rear view mirror.

So true. 1.9 liter 4 cylinder and they want to group is with muscle cars. Hilarious.
@@genemassa9238 Because most of today's are nerdy - bland looking, devoid of character, and no matter what you do to a 4 cylinder, it still sounds like a 4 cylinder, and while you can make an inline 6 sound kool, a V6 will always sound the way it sounded stock, no matter what you do to it.
Neither are corvettes. But really, too many classifications. Mustangs/Camaros/barracudas/Javalins/AMX's/ Challengers were called 'ponycars' because the Mustang was the originator of that type of car. The 64 GTO was called a muscle car, because they took a big motor and stuffed it into a lighter, mid sized sedan body, gave it nice low gears, and would blast away anyone else from stoplight to stoplight. no frills. 2:20 The 1969 Camaro Z28 intended for SCCA road racing came from the dealer with sub 300 HP engine, but it was intended to be upgraded with over-the-counter heads and a few other tweaks bring it up to 400 HP. That is a high reving push rod engine and it appeared to last! It also came with 4-wheel disk brakes with fixed multi piston calipers not single slower reacting single piston floating calipers. It was common in the 1960s for the purchaser of US performance cars to need to take hands-on part in unlocking the performance of the car. Whether this was intended to be selective for serous drivers rather than those just buying image or not, it had that effect.

You may have forgotten that the horsepower ratings back then were not the same as they are since the early 70s. Many people thought that all of a sudden, engines were weaker, but manufacturers were required to rate their engines with all power-reducing add-ons. Yes, emission reduction-based accessories reduced power, but a 70 hp drop in the early 70s meant that a 75 Corvette's HP could be compared to that of modern-day power.
@davepaturno4290 yes I am quite aware of the changes that occurred back than as I was there and gad family working at GM 😊 LOL

The C8 Vette might be kool, but most of today's cars, (read Japanese or Japanese style), all feel like appliances - like driving your ice box or washing machine. The Muscle Cars of old, and even many "regular" cars with the hairiest engines were a blast to drive. Of the few modern "regular" cars that ARE exciting to drive are the Chrysler product Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedan/Magnum station wagon, all of which are no longer in production.
👍🏻
My 1968 Olds 442, 400, 4 speed would have hung with all of them. It was fast. Also the 68 and 69 Olds Ram Rod probably would beat them all, and it was a special design 350 from the factory, super duper fast. Look it up and watch it smoke any car it come up against.😊
One of my dream cars when I was in high school was a 442. Would’ve loved to have gotten that.
THEY RAN B/S & BS/A The 426's and 427's ran A
MY Cobra Roadster 347 440HP
What year?
And the 427 AC/Shelby Cobra....??
We’re making a special video on it. Stay tuned 🙌🏻
I'm pretty sure a Buick GS Stage 1 would smoke all these in the late 60's. Certainly a 1970 GSX would.
1970 Buick stage 1 is number one all the way
So could a modern day Corvette, although I'd hate to have to deal with electronic glitches that are now oh so common.
I wish Buick kept making performance vehicles!
69 Hemi Road Runner. 👊😎
Love the road runner!
Right from the begining the 1965 Mustang at 15.2 was about 3 sec below fast. What a dumb post, I was there 13 sec was fast, it took special built factory cars to go faster like the Thunder bolts, Hemi's, etc a few did make the12's but they were drag only set up cars.
👍🏻 Thanks for watching.
Just type in 50 Fastest Muscle Cars. 1. Shelby Cobra, 2. 427 Stingray, 3. 440 Six Barrel Roadrunner, etc.
There are a lot to choose from!
Cobra is a sports car, not a muscle car... so is StingRay... and Mustang is a pony car...
I quit watching when he showed a Quadrajet manifold and was talking about a holley carb on a Z-28
Always working on improving! Thanks for the view.
I sure miss the 1960s when teenagers in their GT40s and Porche 904s would cruise on down to the local burger joint and say "golly, aren't these 'muscle cars' terrific?"
😂
Also, I know it was not part of the big 3 mass production line. However, Shelby was a division of Ford. It doesn't matter that the body was of European design. The frame, suspension, and heart of the beast was designed, engineered, and constructed by an American. Let's not even mention LeMans and the GT 40. If someone has true 1/4 mile times on this car, let me know. I believe there was none ever specified cause they could not get traction.
Regarding +#10, the '65 289 Mustang...all the body pics you showed were not of the 289 High Performance model, as they had specialized V 289 High Performance badges on the front fenders. Also the heads did not have a smaller combustion chamber than even the std 2 barrel 289s...the only difference in the heads were the spring seats which helped the springs not float at the engines 7,000 RPM redline and the spring studs were screw in for the solid lifter usage at said redline. The engine had lots of other internal differences, including crankshaft, rods, block, water pump, harmonic balancer and the hatchet crankshaft counter weight, along with a dual point distributor and high output coil.
Yeah we have limited stock footage so we're doing our best. Thanks for the info and for watching along!
LOL! Hyper 289 Mustang more like #25 or lower...
@@buzzwaldron6195 Hipo
Porshe is a Sports Car . GT40 was a Race Car . The fastest Street Legal Muscle Car was Shelby Cobra 427 .485 hp , weight 2300 lb , top speed 185 mph . Standing quarter mile 10.8 seconds . Nothing else gets close .Shelby only sold 30 units and the few that are left are worth $ 1 million minimum .
Wouldn’t you love to have one today? Thanks for the info and for watching.
Now, a new Z06 Corvette would demolish that Shelby, and is produced in much higher numbers. It's amazing how far we've come. There are still many ultra-low volume "special" cars, some of which can surpass 250 mph, yet like the Shelby Cobras of the 60s, are extremely rare.
@@davepaturno4290that's true but it's still a Chevy.. government motors
@@timr31908 That's why I have a GR Supra.
The Porshe 904 and the Ford GT40, really do not belong on this list, they were never meant to be driven on the street, with that being said I'll take a 435 horse C2 any day!
The C2 is one of my bucket list cars as well!
And to think my son's daily driver Audi R3 with a 4 cylinder pulls high 11's... [stock internals and drivetrain plus boost]
Goes to show how modern technology has influenced engines!
Plus boost. The fastest 60s street legal cars did it WITHOUT boost.
@@jamesbosworth4191 Absolutely, and they also did it with twice the pistons and thrice the displacement. My comment wasn't meant to denigrate the classics [those cars had a soul], only to acknowledge how incredibly we've advanced.
@@ThomasNux We have not advanced as much as you think. They knew how to make insane power back in the day, but with carburetors and distributors, such engines simply were not streetable - that is, they were not fit for driving on the the street. They were very hard to start cold, they idled very rough and very fast, they would load up and stall in stop and go driving, they were noisy, and, because they had to idle so fast, you had very little engine braking. What is good is that now such engines are civilized. But I don't like 4 cylinder engines.
@@gazolineguvnahh The Buick is my favorite car. Always wished I could have a 40s Buick with Compound Carburetion - two progressively linked 2 barrels. They functioned like a single 4 barrel, making the 41 the most powerful car you could buy that year. Is capable of exceeding 100 MPH, especially if you have the 3:60 rear end instead of the 3:90 rear.
1970 chevelle ls6?
That is a sweet ride and we will have it on an upcoming video about the 1970s. But this video was just for the 60s era.
Where did you get your 1/4 mile times the history channel?
😂
so porsche had the cheat code back then. big power 4 cyl and light weight chassis
Basically!
I always thought that a Hemi 'Cuda 1970 was a 12 second car. Where is it?
You might see it on our list of the 1970s fastest muscle cars coming out soon!
13.6 car tops
Cool video but much info was way off!
Always open for feedback!
Including the quickest version of each model might provide more accuracy. Just saying.
Keep an eye out for an upcoming episode 😉
I think the fastest a/stock car From that era was a Camaro ss396/375 horsepower! It shoots a sub 10 second time!
BULLSHIT ALERT
👍🏻
Ummm, 427 cobra? Cougar gte? Thunderbolt?
It’s tough to narrow down a top 10!
No 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile or 442w30. I like the 428 super cobra jet
👍🏻
You all Same. to forget the 1964 Plymouth sports fury 426 Max wage. 12.99 off the show room.
We’ve got it on our video about the fastest Mopars!
Wasn't sold to non racers...
we thought 11 sec was fast late in the era. It was not a car straight from the factory (hopped up w/aftr mrkt items but still NA). Now have a 8 sec ’80 Starlette but the 4 cyl is efied & turboed to 750/800Hp on the dyno. Will not allow us on track w/o shute now.
👍🏻
why are you calling a Ford GT MK4 (427 c.i.), a Ford GT 40?
Doesn't realize Ford doesn't own the name "GT 40"...
👍🏻
1967 AC cobra with the 427 was turning 11 second quarter mile runs. Why is it not here as it was the fastest overall. Some were even enhanced by owners prior to purchase that turned in 10,s on the quarter mile. So am confused as to how it's not on the top of this list.
Not many AC cobras running around on the streets. We have included it on other videos!
I know the Thunderbolt was fast, but it was set up to be a drag car and plant the rubber. The cobra never was. Set it up, and see what it plants.
How many people were driving around in a GT 40? It's not a muscle car and neither is the Porsche
😂
The 1967 Corvette.
👍🏻
Mustang = pony car.
Camaro Z/28 ( I owned a 69) = pony car
GTO (LeMans, not Tempest) = muscle car
Road Runner = muscle car
Belvedere = muscle car
Porsche 904 LOL... = sport car
Corvette = sport car
Cobra = sport car
Charger = muscle car
GT 40 = sport car
The 69 Camaro was one of my dream cars when I turned 16! Bet you wish you had it still.
My buddy raced a Shelby GT 350 R with Goodyear Blue Dot bias plies. Ran low 12,s. If you knew how tune those 426 hemis, 11's no sweat, same with the Max Wedge cars.
Don't you wish you had a few of those cars back in the garage?
What about the Chevy IIs with L88 427"s?
Vette or road runner 👍
I’ll take the road runner!
I also like the charger the best, just looks bad ass😎
No 67 L88 Corvette? 560 hp aluminum big block? No? Ok.
L88 was not aluminum block. That would be a ZL1. Seems you do as much research as the OP.
@@paulmahon1613your right but the L88 cars still had 425 hp(rated), well over 500hp actual and would run low 13s high 12s in stock trim all day long. They would run away and hid from any stock hemi of the day. This video was poorly researched. Many of these cars were not even the fastest model of the car listed for that year.
@@donjohnston4215 BULLSHIT horsepower numbers and bullshit 1/4 times...no 427 ever came close to 500 hp
👍🏻
@@chadhaire1711 "How much horsepower did the L88 really have?
Although the factory-claimed horsepower was 435, real power output was likely somewhere between 540 and 580, enough to allow a “stock” L88 to run the quarter-mile in the mid-to-high 11-second range." Go argue with Car and Driver, dick.
And the Chevelle 454SS?? 427 Cobra? Some of these figures are a bit dodgy.
The Chevelle 454 didn’t come out until 1970! It’s in our best muscle cars from the 70’s video!
A Ford GT40 could be added
It's so hard to narrow down what car makes it. We included the GT40 in a few previous videos though! Thanks for watching!
wo...you did not list the 64 chev, impala...409!!!!
That was a good one! It’s so hard narrowing it down for these years.
62 Vallient 413 ?
👍🏻
Funny No mention of the Road runner 440 six pack or the 67 and 68 Mustangs with the 390 V8 they were runners and My Brothers ^* GT 500 Shelby with a 428 cobra jet . Most of his horsepower stats were way off and he used what the magazines posted . the 66 corvette with a 327 was pushing 375 hp Screw those mag stats speak the real truth . The 440 charger was pushing 650 hp stock Those numbers are all wrong . The posted lowball numbers for insurance reasons only . They were not the real numbers . I watched my Brothers Shelby Dyno at 725 HP and 800 torque and it was bone stock . such BS Lies . If you are a car guy you know the real truth about those cars
Doing our best to narrow it down to 10 but as you know it’s super difficult. Too many good ones. Thanks for the comment!
A GR Supra does the 1/4 in 12.1 seconds and gets over 34 MPG on the highway at 75 mph.
Not if its a 6-speed
@@chadhaire1711 Correct. I have the excellent ZF-8 automatic.

But it still feels Japanese.
@@jamesbosworth4191 And that's a good thing! It's been proven to be very reliable, and Gazoo Racing did a great job with suspension tuning.
Tojo will never be in the same class as American muscle cars ! Comparing class to crap 💩 not in any lifetime.

66/67 Shelby, 427 side oiler Cobra. It has to be the quickest. How much is the actual released #'s for hp released from Ford? Never mind, the weight difference.
Bottom line: Mopar ruled the 1/4 mile in the 60s. The Ford GT was awesome, but was hardly a "street" car. Surprised the 64 Polara or lighter weight 330 426 Cross ram equipped Hemi was not on this list. When the dual exhaust dumps were uncovered, those cars would turn 13s in the 1/4 mile with 3:91 posi rear ends and Atlas Bucron tires--all factory set-up--out of the showroom. Glad to see the '68 Charger Hemi R/T was on that list though. In my estimation, day-in and day-out, THE greatest factory high po racing machine ever built.
👍🏻
Along comes the Kawasaki H1 500
The 427 Cobra is a hybrid because ITS A BRITISH CAR that was heavily modified so it shouldn't really count.
Never really thought of it that way but I guess you’re right!
