In 2020 Ford fixed the issue by drilling a bypass tunnel for coolant in between the cylinders making the headgasket adhere better and prevent the coolant intrusion issues. Planned obsolescence is evident as they should have been aware doing that design with a open deck design with slits in between cylinders would cause these issues especially in hotter climates and poorly maintained motors that go to extended maintenance intervals rather then severe service intervals which these motors and actually all turbo motors require.
I recently bought a 2020 Fusion 2.0 ecoboost. I was horrified as my mechanic told me to sell the car quickly due to frequent problems with this engine. He said he had repaired 5 of these in the last month, one of which couldn't be saved and the car went for scrap. Should I be worried about similar problems? I am shocked

Had the problem 2017 edge titanium. Ford would do nothing. Traded it at a loss for a Toyota. Ford will never get another cent from me. I will always encourage my friends to do the same

My engine is junk too.
2018 Ford Edge 2.0L. Purchased at 37500mi, failure began around 70k mi. Verified coolant intusion into cylinder 2. Symptoms were dissappearing coolant and intermitent p302 code. Dealer maintained vehicle, used it gently for what little good that did. No extended warranty so $7500 to replace the entire block.
Haven't replaced the engine yet. Used blue devil head sealant to bandaid the issue until I can afford it. Still overheats under heavy uphill load, but works fine around town. Might as well get every mile out of it before eating the bill.
Purchased from Carvana in 2021 for $31900. After this, it would have been cheaper to just buy brand new. Would have actually been cheaper. Last time I'll ever touch a Ford, lesson learned.
Did you remove the thermostat? And Drain it and add water?
It's a problem, but not wide spread. My mechanic told me this problem affects about 1-2 percent of the engines. I owned a 2017 Edge with the 2.0 and never had any issues with more than 100k miles.
Im at 86k on a 2017 SEL, no problems. Anything I should look out for?
@@jonswenson sell it. I am in the process of getting the motor replaced. If the coolant tank goes below the min line, you are headed for a new motor.
I saw on another video that Ford was very concerned about overheating on the Ecoboost engines so they went with open water jackets for more surface area coverage next to the cylinder walls. This resulted in less head gasket material in that area leading to failures.

This is true except for the Ecoboost in the focus st, ironically it's the higher end AWD focus rs with the open deck and cylinder cracking issues in the focus line go figure.
According to all my Ford mechanic buddies the block cracks around the top of the cylinders and the only fix is a new short block. So let's recap, the 6.0 diesel, leaky head gaskets, the 97-2002ish 5.4 just blow spark plugs out for no reason, the 2008 to 2013 5.4 3 valve has cam phasers that last less than 100k miles and forget changing the 2 piece spark plugs without the extraction tool, the 2011 to 2015 Focus and Fiesta with the automatic trans, enough said, the 6.4 diesel, don't even let one of these park near your house as it might never move again. And the 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 turbo motors are all cracking the blocks and leaking coolant into the cylinders. I work for a utility company in the service department so we deal with the 6.7 diesels these days and for the most part they have been pretty good with a few valve seat issues on the very early engines. But we have started to get the new 7.3 gas as it is cheaper to maintain and so far we have had several drop seats in them, and this is on 50k mile engines. I swear Ford must fire their entire engineering staff every 3 years and hire kids straight out of college to design the newest stuff.

Just had my 2.0 replaced on my 18 Fusion, 58000 miles… coolant in both 2 and 3. Thank god I had an outside warranty cause I was 6 months out on the powertrain. Car is worth 16k, work total was $8,800, more than half its value. My dealership charges A LOT for labor but $0 deductible warranty paid everything. Now let’s hope she stays running cause I want to keep her for a while

My mother had a 2017 Ford edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine that was an ex-rental vehicle. She bought it in May 2018 until problems occurred in December 2021. She heard some sloshing noise within the EcoBoost engine prior to taking the car to the Ford dealership for an unrelated issue just before New Years Eve.
Wonder how many people are driving these around and still have loans on these cars?
This type of problem will leave you stranded in the middle of BFE.
Unfortunately this customer took a loss and decided to trade in. Still owing more than they gave on trade. just over warranty.. and couldn’t wait for the engine. only vehicle. Very disheartening.

I have a 2017 fusion with the Gen 2, 2.0 ecoboost as well. I am not having misfires currently, however occasionally rough at startups, and right after for a little while, and it also consumes coolant at a rate of about 1/2 cup a week

Flawed block. The bulletin should list a part number for the new revised block. I believe there's some sort of groove or pocket between each cylinder that is the potential for leakage. New ones seem to have more material.. At least from what I can tell

We let them sit over night and then put the borescope down the cylinder and you can see coolant on top of the piston

The TSB states the vehicles affected are the ones per the dates below. If your specific vehicle is made after the specified date you should not have the problem. I have a 2019 Escape with the 2.0 made in July 2019 so I should be ok.
2015-2018 Edge
- 2017-2019 Fusion/MKZ built on or before 8-Apr-2019
- 2017-2019 Escape built on or before 16-May-2019
- 2017-2019 MKC built on or before 18-Apr-2019

Ours went bad on our '17 Fusion. Luckily we got it replaced under warranty but then got totaled in an accident earlier this year. Maybe someone was able to pull the engine from the junk yard.

This is an issue that has been known for years now. It is due to a design feature of the block which has an open deck with slots cut between cylinders which eventually causes head gasket failure. Ford redesigned the block to eliminate this problem and has been replacing the bad engines. Of course this caused a huge backlog in orders for replacement engines. The design was changed around late 2019. If a newer engine develops a coolant ingestion problem it is probably due to a leaky intake cooler and is a very rare problem. EcoBoost 2.0 engines made in the 2015-2019 date range should be replaced as soon as this occurs. Some of the smaller Ecoboost engines of the same date range also have this problem and on those, Ford was replacing the block rather than replacing the entire engine.

I'm looking at a 2015 Edge with 110k miles. It has the 2.0 4 cylinder. Doesn't sound like there has been any issues. Should I avoid it?
FYI 2015 motors were quite different from 16 and up, and they were better.
Correct on most models. Service bulletin points out the effected make/model/year and engine code. If your 2.0 fell outside of this, then your golden! Prior years are proven solid engines

The 2.5 is very reliable but not very powerful

The overheating issue can occur in various engine types, not just limited to Ecoboost engines. however this block concern and TSB I believe is limited to this particular engine

Yes! Extremely expensive as you will need a new short block which means taking the whole engine out and apart.😱😱😱
Its more than just a head gasket, the cylinder wall is too thin for the head gasket to work properly, thats why its an engine block change@@billrimmer5596

That’s a good question. I believe the revised engine block takes care of this. And Aside from the carbon issues, I don’t see them often. As an independent shop 2017 and newer are just starting to come around out of warranty.
