Now living in Greer (have been since 2001). In 1968, I lived in Greenville and did not like it at all. In 1996; however, I was asked to help a local business with it's software and I came here to work. In 2001, bought a house in Greer. Have been here for 22 years. A few things I just love about this area are: 1. The way the seasons are ALWAYS EXACTLY THREE (3) MONTHS LONG. Just when one gets tired of one season another one pops up. It's really the best. 2. Proximity to North Carolina and the mountains. Good for short weekend trips. Also close to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and DOLLYWOOD!!! Gamble much: Close to Cherokee, NC. GSP affords me the way to go visit my family in Florida. Flights are not every expensive. (But maybe they are in 2023. I haven't flown since 2020.

Pros: There are 5 terrific state parks close to Greenville, as well as the 75 mile Foothills Trail and Palmetto Trail that runs from the mountains to the coast. If you are a hiker, the southeast has more miles of hiking trails than anywhere in the country. Plus you can hike year round. Cons: traffic is awful & crime is getting ridiculous.

If you look in the more rural areas around Greenville housing is more affordable, but then there are fewer good paying jobs. The areas in Pickens and Oconee counties are cheaper, unless you get near the lakes. South of I-85 can be cheaper, but this is tornado alley around here. Stay away from Spartanburg...higher crime. @@Solace030

Moved here 12 years ago from upstate NY after I retired and love the place. Have had severe allergies all my life, find them less severe here than back in NY. Only negative surprise I had when I moved here are the way taxes are structured. Don't get me wrong, they're still a lot cheaper down here and it's not just a Greenville issue, it's a SC issue, but the personal property tax on vehicles and the taxes on our water bills have to be added to the real property tax to get a fair comparison other states. Oh, one other oddity, find it's harder to find old fashion grits in stores here than it was in the Albany NY area.

As a northerner, you hear a lot about southern hospitality. You never hear about southern customer service- because it's by far the worst in the country. Expect remedial tasks to take 15-20 mins longer in the south for no apparent reason. With that being said, Greenville is a great little city with very nice people. Probably the best airport in the country.

"Southern hospitality" is a polite way of saying passive-aggressive. You won't know what anyone really thinks about you or your views, and you can expect to be ghosted with no clue as to why. This is "Southern hospitality". As a northerner, you can forget about having any frank meaningful dialog where different views and opinions are expressed and discussed, or where people allow you to explain yourself or defend your opinions. That just doesn't happen in Greenville because that would be viewed as being rude and too forthright. So instead, they will just cut off all communication with you...... as if that's the polite thing to do.

As a lifetime resident of Greenville, I’m here to tell you the massive influx of new residents moving in is exactly why rent is so high. This used to be one of the cheapest places in the country to live. In 10 years, housing costs have more than doubled. And the traffic is an absolute nightmare. Any ideas on where I can go to escape this madness?

@heathermckee411 i worked at a hotel in Kanab UT for the past year, talked to people from all over the country, and overwhelmingly realized: this phenomenon is happening all over the country. Cost of living is unmanageable basically everywhere, and all areas have complaints of "too many people moving to the area and raising the cost of living". Generally undesirable locations are the main ticket out.

I have tried everything to make friends and become active in the community, but I haven’t had any luck. I have tried lots of groups with people in my demographic and/or common interests. As someone considering moving to Greenville from Southern California by the end of this year, I have to say it's odd and a bit alarming that EVERY UA-cam video, Tiktok, Reddit post, and city review about Greenville has multiple local commenters telling others not to move there. "We're Full" seems to be copy/pasted everywhere. I get that locals in lots of places like to gatekeep their towns for nostalgia's sake, but I've never encountered so much open hostility toward outsiders all coming from one city. So much for Southern Hospitality. Can anyone confirm whether this is just an online phenomena or whether we would face it in real life too? I moved here last February from Indiana and I’m already looking to move away. Traffic is so ridiculous and 90 percent of the time there’s no reason for it. There will be an accident on the opposite side of the median on 85 but everyone will come to a stop in the other side. I thought Tucson was full of bad drivers but Greenville is far worse. The city itself is super nice but it’s over saturated with people. Lafayette Indiana is similarly sized but doesn’t have nearly as bad of a problem with traffic.

More like double! A 30 year loan adds a lot of interest over time! You can really shorten your loan time and interest if you can make an extra payment each year. Some people choose to do this by paying every 4 weeks, and not every month, but there are lots of ways to go about it.

My dad retired from the AF to leave the place. Instead of Southern Hospitality it should be named Southern Hostility.

Every realtor and the City of Greenville will convince people to move to Greenville past the point capacity since there is money to be gained. The realtors in Greenville do not care if the quality of life of the residents is going down with overpopulation, as long as they can keep promoting the virtues of Greenville and can continue to sell homes. Money is all that matters. And once Greenville is ruined and trashed with overpopulation, congestion, etc., the realtors will simply move on to the next "up and coming city" and repeat the process until they retire.

Frankly, there are neighborhoods filled to the brim with struggling blacks and whites intertwined all throughout Greenville. The realtors and the City of Greenville will never post a video showing the world how many depressed neighborhoods there are all over Greenville, and often directly adjacent to much more expensive neighborhoods. In reality, Greenville is an absolute mecca for those who really enjoy parking their junker vehicles and their guard dog on their front lawn within 1500 feet of a home valued at $1,000,000. For those of you who would really like to piss off the well-to-do, Greenville is YOUR town. But don't take my word for it. Check out the crime maps, and then check out the streets using the Streetview functionality of GoogleMaps. You will see tons of depressed black and Latino neighborhoods all over Greenville. So again, if you are financially struggling and pissed off, and would really like the opportunity to piss off the 1%ers, you will easily find a trashy neighborhood to do just that in Greenville, SC.

Black folk have been pushed out of their communities which were traditionally near downtown so the northerner transplants (and illegals brought here for the cheap labor...yeah I said it. someone has to...) could have the land to build their little parks and ball fields. I know. Ive lived here all 50 years of my life. I watched that process happen on the west end of Greenville. Now poorer whites and blacks have had the squeeze put on them to bring in all these people. Odd how this little "country community" flipped so hard on its own for that dollar.

The only way the Yankees won't move to Greenville is if a coalition of residents posts their own UA-cam videos that reveal the truth about Greenville. For example, post videos that show the traffic jams on the highways and main arteries, that show the overcrowded parking lots, that show the litter and decay, and show all the really crappy neighborhoods and streets all throughout the core of Greenville. And of course, including a healthy dose of videos that depict crime taking place in Greenville and the endless convictions of criminals in Greenville will also debunk the safety argument for Greenville. Unless the Yankees see the truth, the line of new comers to Greenville will not slow down. It is up to the residents to do this. The realtors and developers won't do this, and the city government won't do this.

Nothing interesting about that city ! Just a banal little city that became famous by word of mouth from desperate expats fleeing high crimes and inflation in big cities. Have spent 2 years there and found out that it lacks character, diversity, Good innovative food joints & still has not peeled off its southern character. Still shows signs of negligence from years back (roadways, infrastructures, etc). Newly built housings are clumsy and like fast food just to accommodate the high influx of domestic migration. It seems like a poor state. Has a lot of toxic out of character southern baby boomer generation. Fake nice attitude with some xenophobia and low social skills. Greenville feels like it is thriving because of the tax base collected from mass migration, but Still got a long way before it gets popped out of its southern shell & be modernised. I visited it before in 2007 and thought that I would never consider SC as a state to live in not even for a month ! Have had many unpleasant encounters with businesses here. Because the state is poor businesses seem like desperately wanna try to rob you and see you as chance to make some buck with some in your face dishonesty. Moved to Columbus, OH just a year ago, which is much classier with an abundance of quality amenities, well dressed demographics, more diverse & got a genuine American grit .if you want to live in the south Consider NC between Greensboro & Raleigh area (well built, cleaner & modern) or GA (north east Atlanta suburbs or Savannah) 👍 An advice from a Pal who’s been to 22 countries 😎 I am writing this from my hotel room in Zurich. Travelled to Budapest, took the DB train to Munich, rented a BMW Z4 M40 roadster (never drove a BMW so I wanted an ironic experience by driving 1 from its home town factory), drove to Liechtenstein then Zurich and in 3 days heading to Lausanne & Geneva 😎 thanks for reading my bragging
