I always knew most of the camera improvements we see on smartphones nowadays are software related but man this not only proves it but shows me just how much natural the iphone 7 looks compared to the 14...
Because of the cold aluminum back, lightweight feel, and the fact that my 13 pro oversharpens everything or just makes it look like a painting; I definitely miss my 7.
One of the glaring things the 14 Pro is great at is the stabilizing of the videos. Very impressed with that and i think that got unnoticed/not talked about enough
6 generations apart, and yet manages to hold up pretty well... Some people are even liking the 7 better cuz of it's color science. Truly shows the beauty of the quality the iPhones used to come with. Lovely comparison guys, would love more such videos!
Well looking at the specs the actual sensor is basically identical, both have 12MP sensors. The main differences are with everything else, like the image stabilization, different aperture, and a 7-element lens vs a 6-element lens. Other than that everything is purely software and post-processing differences, so its not too surprising that the 7 still holds up considering at its core it is the same camera as the 14 with some minor differences.
Maaaaan I feel so nostalgic right now, I prefer more the iphone 7 look, no oversharpening and it looks kinda more cinematic... Niles please give us more comparisons like that 👌👌
@@nixd0rf356 I just upgraded from 7 to 13 pro and god I do not miss the 7... I like the massive quality bump + low light performance + extra shooting options is insane
Nah I recently upgraded and have to say that day to day the new iPhone is just so much better. I agree that over-sharpening in an issue, but dynamic range, low light, stabilisation, photo, portrait and general speed of the phone is just miles ahead
My Iphone 7 is my 1st and only Iphone, thanks to the price drop and availability to us 3rd world countries. Battery is relatively new, I have 84% and it's perfectly ok as long as you don't play any games for too long. I love taking pictures with it for sure. Reminds me of my Lumia and Nokia 700 phones from the past. Those pictures were awesome, and still hold up to time. Love this camera comparison video though, and for sure the 7 definitely still can keep up with the Newer Iphones.
My favorite Portrait Modes to date have still come out of my old retired iPhone 7 Plus. I can only guess/describe it as, back then it was just doing more basic two lens segmentation, and now there's a bunch of ML funkery that sometimes just looks off or unnatural to your brain.
I remember my mates iPhone 7 plus, it was the first mainstream phone with a portrait mode dual camera set up and it blew us away. I think we spent the whole day at the park taking portrait photos
The clarity on with long shots is what I noticed the most. The 7 was holding its own on the closeups. But if you pause on any shot at a distance ( especially the surfing), the clarity on the 14 is astounding. Most of the ripples in the water got lost on the 7's tiny sensor.
I've had an iPhone 7 for like 8 years, and switched to an A54 Samsung 2 months ago. Only noticed some quality of life changes, better cameras, and a better battery. The new features were nice but I didn't notice much of a difference in performance, at least for what I use my phone for.
I have long felt that cinematic video isn't necessarily sharp - it's more "dream like" But the iPhone 14 has things like cinematic and slow motion which I don't think the 7 offers plus more choices in video resolution and frame rates - check me on that if I am wrong but it makes sense to me
I had a few iPhones and the ones I used the most in my life were the 7 and the 11, I just bought the 13. In the last 2 years using the iPhone 11 I often missed the look of my iPhone 7, I really liked its low saturation.
It's amazing how good the iPhones looked before the aggressive oversharpening of the 11 and up. I actually bought an iPhone X just for the look. Smooth and pleasant to the eye💙
Hey, I appreciate this video, but I would have loved to see some night shots. As you said the 14 Pro has Night Mode and I belief as soon as the lighting conditions aren't good anymore the iPhone 7 photos fall apart.
wonder if anyones figured out how to decrease the sharpness of the new phones to look more like the 7 -8 era of iPhones; bcos I agree I also really did like the look coming out of the 7
My iPhone 7plus was one of my favorite phone cameras to date. The stills I was able to capture on that phone are almost unparalleled. It was a time when hardware and software came together in perfect balance. Amazing how apple still hasn’t found that balance again in all these years. My 15 pro is good, but nowhere near how I felt when using that phone.
Even though the 7 wasn’t all that different from the 6S it seemed so cool at the time. I miss the days of actually being excited for new iPhone releases
I have a 6s and honestly, love the look of the photos that come out of it. The biggest hindrance is Apple's camera app. I use Camera+ and other camera apps on it that let you shoot RAW as well. It's output some of my favorite phone shots ever. The quality is actually pretty nice. Apple's app stinks though. I don't even enjoy it on new phones.
I really love my 7 plus so much before this. The only problem is at night and also the front camera, everything else are okay. I took a lot of great photos using it. I've already upgraded
I do believe the sharpness is more natural, but it terms of raw data, the 14 pro will edit a lot better. And I do have a 7 and a 14 pro so I can use both if need be. But the biggest feature is the great telephoto and macro capabilities and the depth of field and the in camera stabilization is far beyond the 7. So I can just reduce the sharpness and color grade very simply to get a 7 look, but whether I’m using either, I’d still be color grading for my own preference which neither camera does for me. I would say the 24fps on the 14 pro is also a big advantage as it makes it much more cinematic. I upgraded from the 7 and in terms of the phone, the camera is about the only thing going for it. Since the phone is pretty cheap now, it’s worth picking up I suppose, but I’m still mirrorless camera all the way, the bigger sensors always give a better vibe, especially since the raw data will be very editing friendly and the different lenses one can get will be superior to any iPhone in camera or external lens setup. I was using lenses on my iPhone 4, so I definitely enjoy the simplicity, but I’ve gotten way better footage from the 14 pro and I have the 256gb 7 and the 1tb 14 pro, so storage wise, if you really want to shoot 4k, with all the other parameters I’ve mentioned, the storage aspect is huge. And all that is disregarding the pro film apps such as filmic pro or protake. You can adjust so much more in those apps than with the 7 and you can already reduce a lot of the things you may dislike in the 14 pro, but also have more advantages with the other cameras. To be able to adjust everything is ideal, if anyone takes iPhone filming and photos serious, then a pro video app and a pro camera app will up the already fantastic quality and all that is before editing. I’m glad to have both, but realistically, the chance of me ever using a 7 again is slim.
Still using an iPhone 7 as my phone in 2022, and still using it to record a lot of my videos. The best camera/camcorder is the one you have in your pocket. Also, it has the Moment case, so I can attach my Moment lenses…😊

Low light would be a massive improvement but IMO everything else is bad, in brightly lit images newer iPhones tend to take overly saturated and overly sharpened photos. They look artificial and weird IMO.
getting the iPhone 14 Pro soon and currently own the iPhone 7 which I've been using it since launched. Only upgrading because Apple decided not to support it anymore. Might just make it my dedicated camera for black and white photography. Thanks for the video comparison!

I'm surprised at how many people prefer the 7 - I enjoy the look of the 14 much more, from the subtle contrast/fine detail enhancement that introduces more contrast in darker areas like the foliage without crushing shadows to the way it seems to pull more color out of the environment. Bit depth is the term, I guess, it's like dynamic range, but instead of high/low exposure extremes, you have extremes of different colors in one shot, and it looks very aesthetically pleasing to me. By comparison, the 7 has a bit of a haze. No deal breaker, I've pushed the Dehaze slider in both directions before and either can work, but if I can only have one, the 14 prevails.
I was thinking the same. I think the 7 looks cheap, and not in a good way. The 14 definitely oversharpens things but that can be adjusted. In the shot from under the pier, the pillars are shillouettes on the 7, but you can actually see them on the 14. The 14 also has macro mode, action mode, night mode and other things like that. One thing I have noticed that is quite annoying as a 14 user is how far the focal distance is on the 1x wide lens. On my 11 I could use the 1x for close-up shots but on the 14 I can't get any closer than ~10cm or it goes out of focus. I guess the ultrawide lens picks up the slack. I also wish he tested 3x zoom on both models to show distant sharpness. The 14 wins by a lot in my book 🤷♂
I think people always prefer feeling nostalgia is why. In 10 years people will say 14 pro has a better "feel" than the iPhone 24. There's no denying how well the 14 captures color.
7:50 I'm someone who grew up with a 3DS, and I loved filming everything I could. A couple of months ago I brought a DSi (my only working DS at the moment) to take pictures of a thing my friends and I went to, and it looked so cool. Taking pictures with a phone feels so weird compared to taking them with a DS, like they have this vibe of "a better time" even though it was this year, and it somehow felt more fun to take pictures and looking at them.
i think the most funny thing is that the camera was never that bad in the first place. If you show to anyone on the streets photos from the 7 and label as iphone 14, people will just believe and say it looks awesome... so i think we end up focusing too much on gear and not the spot we are at... there are also a bunch of techniques and other softwares to improve the photo quality... I read this on a book about photography once.... it's better to spend 1000 USD on a trip and 500 on a gear, than 1500 on just gear.
I like the iphone 7’s look and was about to say the 14 looks over saturated, but I think the cameras still hold up today compared with the newer cameras. The 7 still runs smooth. Just have to get a battery replacement on them and they’re good to go. The differences in the phones is what I expect one generation of difference to look like, not 6 gens of difference. Iphone doesn’t update their phones as much as I’d like, no company does, that’s why I still have an 11 pro max. Not worth the upgrade
They both look really good in my opinion. I had the 7 Plus with the dual lenses and thought it was amazing for the time. I also have a 12 Pro and 14 Pro and no longer a 7 Plus. I still got a 6s Plus laying around here somewhere. But I believe the 7 was geared for HD Video content so makes sense it's got a great video quality.
I still own my iPhone 7 which I got back in 2017. The camera used to be better, and I loved taking photos that had a depth effect to them. Nowadays it still does take nice photos although 50% of the time the photos look a bit jagged, details on grass and trees look muddy (which is only noticeable if you take a really close look). Sadly the microphone sensor got damaged and I can't answer calls properly, so I've been looking to change it and will soon. I also noticed on your comparison video that the 14 Pro has more vivid and saturated colors, whereas the 7 in some shots had bleak colors (the colors looked whitened). Awesome comparison
The iPhone 7 when using ios 10 recorded the images in jpg. From ios 11 onwards, it started to use the current format, HEIC, which compresses the image more and produces images with a smaller size. But, despite being reported by Apple that the HEIC would have the same quality, it does not. I have a 7 with ios 10 and another with ios 15. Photos taken under the same conditions, they are worse in ios 15. You can export the photos in jpg in ios 15, but the photograph is made in HEIC. Then you can choose how to export: HEIC or jpg and the final result is the same. But when I photographed in jpg (before ios 11), I had more detail, better color, etc. So that muddy look is caused by the new file format.
@@vgranja Oooh, I never knew that the HEIC format caused such differences. To be honest, despite owning an iPhone, I was never too keen on reading what the updates did, and I was surprised whenever I imported my photos and they were in HEIC format instead of jpg. What an awful change!
It's funny that the iPhone 13 released last year ALSO had a 12MP camera - just like the iPhone 7 released a whopping six years ago. And the 12MP we still have in iPhone 14 Pro unless we activate raw mode. You can accuse Apple of many things but rushing to give consumers what they want is not one of them.
uhhhh to my shock...i think i enjoy the iPhone 7 video better than the 14 pro. This is coming from a guy with a 13 mini....dang it....I have been duped all these years to believing I'm getting mind blowing upgrades on these things. Video comparisons like this will sober you up!

I came here to gain some inspiration to use my old iPhone 7 to record freestyle videos for my UA-cam and TikToks and heard some great vibes in the videos….could we possible get a track name or link for the music in the video👀
The reason these trends for retro happen is because for the most part older stuff lasts longer/is better quality. Side note - yes I know technically newer stuff is more advanced, but to me that does not translate to a huge quantum leap improvement, instead we get over reliance on HDR and over sharpening on phone cameras these days. The real world doesn't look like what these new phone cameras put out. I had a Pixel for a while and yes the photos look great, but they didn't look natural to me. Same with stuff like "night mode", yes it defo helps with dark shots but it does it in a such a reckless way. Mm. I got given an iphone 7 recently and I love it. Sure the battery sucks and I cant make calls, but it is defo a camera keeper. Great video.

You know what's crazy? Is I remember the hype for this phone was crazy just like the songs you mentioned. It was a really good time to be alive. And I remember it like yesterday.
I don’t really have an eye for color or sharpness or whatever, so to me they look so similar and it just highlights how much the improvement has stalled (despite what Apple says on stage every year). I have a XS and see no reason to upgrade.
The video comparison would have looked way different under challenging low light conditions, where the better lenses and bigger sensor of the 14 Pro would have made a huge difference.

honestly the iphone 7 clips look like something that can be in a movie, especially the clip with your van driving away, it just had some really serious drama type tv show vibe, but the one with the 14 just seemed clear and bright, which is a good thing i guess but the older ones just made the moments seem more special rather than detailed

I still have an iPhone 8 and I LOVE the photos it takes, even when compared to my girlfriend's iPhone 12 Mini. I hate the path Apple has gone down with their cameras!
I always knew most of the camera improvements we see on smartphones nowadays are software related but man this not only proves it but shows me just how much natural the iphone 7 looks compared to the 14...
I remember when the iPhone 7 came out it was the best video camera phone. Wow, time flys so so fast!
I can still recall when they first introduced ois where there a lady in a motorcycle taking a video.
Yess I loved my iphone7 cinematic colours
Well looking at the specs the actual sensor is basically identical, both have 12MP sensors. The main differences are with everything else, like the image stabilization, different aperture, and a 7-element lens vs a 6-element lens. Other than that everything is purely software and post-processing differences, so its not too surprising that the 7 still holds up considering at its core it is the same camera as the 14 with some minor differences.
@@nordvestgaming1238 Thank you 👍
....or it shows that apple is just scamming their customers year after year, depends on how you see it

Maaaaan I feel so nostalgic right now, I prefer more the iphone 7 look, no oversharpening and it looks kinda more cinematic... Niles please give us more comparisons like that 👌👌
Man I'm still using the iPhone 7 but the camera is just so shit in low light you'd swear the photo was taken by an iPad mini from 2012
@@nixd0rf356 hehe ok i believe, night photo isn't so good, maybe it can be better with some apps that can use longer exposure
Nostalgic?? Nostalgic is Motorola or Blackberry. iPhone 7 was just 20 minutes ago.
Love this camera comparison video though, and for sure the 7 definitely still can keep up with the Newer Iphones.
why does the Iphone 7 look better in video mode
I DONT KNOW BUT IM SHOOK
@@moment I thought it was because I was watching on a 1080p Monitor at work but I just came home and the 7 is still better in video mode 😭
@@wesleyvandeurzen7199It can’t be nor is it better.
Too much detail of this real world is kinda ugly, so the smoother look on iPhone 7 looks better as it has less detail, hope this explains
7 looks better in every way
My favorite Portrait Modes to date have still come out of my old retired iPhone 7 Plus.
I have long felt that cinematic video isn't necessarily sharp - it's more "dream like" But the iPhone 14 has things like cinematic and slow motion which I don't think the 7 offers plus more choices in video resolution and frame rates - check me on that if I am wrong but it makes sense to me
yes and no
"PAL mode" gives 25 and 50 fps ;) And Lens 65-75mm - give Portrait effect
I agree, I’m still using an iPhone 7 and I have no plans to replace it. It works great!
thats so core
Main has a poor battery. I have to change it.

Crazy how good the 7 still does 😮 there are a ton other androids on the Market that are „new“ but don’t look that good in photo performance
I have and still use an iPhone 7 as my main phone. Nice to see the comparison. 👍
What´s teh kit u use for your videos man? Look really good
wonder if anyones figured out how to decrease the sharpness of the new phones to look more like the 7 -8 era of iPhones; bcos I agree I also really did like the look coming out of the 7
My iPhone 7plus was one of my favorite phone cameras to date.
Which other apps do you use?
I really love my 7 plus so much before this. The only problem is at night and also the front camera, everything else are okay. I took a lot of great photos using it. I've already upgraded
me too
Funny that the 14 Pro has a cinematic mode when the 7 is doing it without being a setting for it. It is just it.
1:06 I have an iPhone 7 and I’m literally plugged in too 💀
Still using an iPhone 7 as my phone in 2022, and still using it to record a lot of my videos. The best camera/camcorder is the one you have in your pocket. Also, it has the Moment case, so I can attach my Moment lenses…😊
What are moment case lenses?
@@ukestudio3002 Moment is a photography/videography company. They sell some lenses (wide, telephoto, macro, etc) that you attach to your phone's camera lens. You need to have a Moment phone case in order to attach their lenses.

Obviously 14 does a better job in exposing darker areas, but I don't like the way it sharpens the edges of objects. 7 also takes impressive videos 👍🏼
The 14 Pro has had a serious problem with over processing since launch. Apple does not care about it's photography oriented users anymore.
I just updated from the 7 and I have to say that it is such a massive jump in quality. I don’t even need to do a side by side to notice how much better my footage looks, especially in low light. It is obviously aspected after so many years, but I was amazed by how much better it looks
you're high because you bought a new expensive toy and came here to brag, so your opinion can't be trusted, it's better, but not that much
Yea low light is terrible on the 7
Iphone 7 is very good At night
@@TsVirg ye amazing, all u can see is night
Low light would be a massive improvement but IMO everything else is bad, in brightly lit images newer iPhones tend to take overly saturated and overly sharpened photos. They look artificial and weird IMO.
getting the iPhone 14 Pro soon and currently own the iPhone 7 which I've been using it since launched. Only upgrading because Apple decided not to support it anymore. Might just make it my dedicated camera for black and white photography. Thanks for the video comparison!
I also did the same. Upgraded from iphone 7 to 14 pro max. But somehow i use the 7 more than the 14 like when going to the gym it fits my pocket etc and the camera is good on all of them. Sold both and went with the se. I like the feel of the old iphones lol
Same here 👍 What color will you get the 14 pro?
@@goforsteve3042 i got the space black. thought of changing the pace and get the deep purple coz i always have a black iPhone but the store i bought mine from do not have it in stock.
hy first time watcher here and im so impressed by you video its so natural, honest and not over spoken im bout to bing watch all your videos, liking and subscribing
They might seem weird on the phone because you're used to taking pictures with a 0.3 megapixel DS camera.
i think the most funny thing is that the camera was never that bad in the first place. If you show to anyone on the streets photos from the 7 and label as iphone 14, people will just believe and say it looks awesome... so i think we end up focusing too much on gear and not the spot we are at... there are also a bunch of techniques and other softwares to improve the photo quality... I read this on a book about photography once.... it's better to spend 1000 USD on a trip and 500 on a gear, than 1500 on just gear.
iPhone 14 is much better at night photography though i think as i have a 13 mini and have tried night shots.
Will there be no Moment Invitational anymore??
I like the iphone 7’s look and was about to say the 14 looks over saturated, but I think the cameras still hold up today compared with the newer cameras. The 7 still runs smooth. Just have to get a battery replacement on them and they’re good to go. The differences in the phones is what I expect one generation of difference to look like, not 6 gens of difference. Iphone doesn’t update their phones as much as I’d like, no company does, that’s why I still have an 11 pro max. Not worth the upgrade
I like ur comments❤
The biggest difference is in low-light areas in which users will come across at least %40 of the time.
It's really cool watching your video for the first time... The description was good 😊
I still own my iPhone 7 which I got back in 2017.
@@flamehunter001, yes, a change that was worse in terms of quality of the photos.
I was so pleased to hear you say that about the iPhone 7. All the time I was looking at it, I thought "that's a vibe."
Coming from the iPhone 7 to the 14 Pro, I love to see this on my recommended page
I love the looks and color science in the 7. It just looks more natural.
14 Looks better, but 7 feels beter
1:52 “I was younger than I am now” Well no shit bro 😂
Nice review, iPhone Cameras are truly amazing! but hoping there would be part 2 with photos and videos from low light areas or at night.
Of course it is [Because in true Apple style the sheer amount of changes between major IOS updates make it *very* hard to download modern apps]
uhhhh to my shock...i think i enjoy the iPhone 7 video better than the 14 pro. This is coming from a guy with a 13 mini....dang it....I have been duped all these years to believing I'm getting mind blowing upgrades on these things. Video comparisons like this will sober you up!
I think its interesting that they kept the color proccessing the same between 7 generations of phones.
I love videos like this - it's like an antidote to all the marketing around launch time that makes you think you "need" to upgrade. I'm sticking with my 12 mini forever until another smaller unit comes out!
I came here to gain some inspiration to use my old iPhone 7 to record freestyle videos for my UA-cam and TikToks and heard some great vibes in the videos….could we possible get a track name or link for the music in the video👀
Me still rocking iPhone 7
This is so funny, I was just telling a buddy of mine today, how much I prefer the natural look of the iphone 6s series :) I don't have my 6s plus anymore, but I still have the first SE which has the same camera. I miss that look from my current iphone. :)
Quite the improvement!!
I considered the newer phones, but ultimately decided on the iPhone SE 2020. Liked the photo look in comparisons, and combined with the Moment 58 and 18, I'm set
I got the SE 2020 and I'm about to use it for all my filmmaking. I think it's dope

I love it's simple look . It just looks so nice .
So what are we even paying for with the iPhone 14 Pro? How do these minimal differences _(I wouldn't call an oversharpened filter an improvement)_ justify the 3x - 4x price increment??
You know what's crazy? Is I remember the hype for this phone was crazy just like the songs you mentioned.
It was a really good time to be alive.
And I remember it like yesterday.
I don’t really have an eye for color or sharpness or whatever, so to me they look so similar and it just highlights how much the improvement has stalled (despite what Apple says on stage every year). I have a XS and see no reason to upgrade.
watching this video with my ip 7+
The video comparison would have looked way different under challenging low light conditions, where the better lenses and bigger sensor of the 14 Pro would have made a huge difference.

Epic comparison.
I'm a little late to the comment section party on this, but I'd like to point out that yes, technically the 14 Pro is an improvement over the 7. But to me, the level of improvement over a 7 year span is absolutely pathetic.

If I would choose a fixed focal, I would definitely choose the iPhone 7.
I’m flabbergasted by how it manage to look better than the 14. Of course, it only got one lens, low light performance is ridiculous, stabilization in video is laughable in our modern standards, but damn, I’m shocked.
Genuinely.
Great selection of background music. Very comfortable
honestly the iphone 7 clips look like something that can be in a movie, especially the clip with your van driving away, it just had some really serious drama type tv show vibe, but the one with the 14 just seemed clear and bright, which is a good thing i guess but the older ones just made the moments seem more special rather than detailed
this is so beautiful i mean i would still go for the iphone 7 because of the retro film kinda video feel its just so nice
Definitely agree with you, the iphone 7 looked so much better and natural in terms of video, but the dynamic range made the iphone 14 stand out in terms of still photography, cool video tho
Still using my iPhone 7 plus until now..The camera is great
I used to have the 7 but I think it does worse when it’s too bright or too dark.
It's always fun seeing clips of San Clemente when you're away from home
The 7 has some nostalgic effect because it has a cinematic feel to it while the 14 pro got the sharpness and brightness section. For me, i would choose the 7 cause it has the old days feeling hehe
