I just upgraded from the 12 pro max to the 14 Pro. For me it was a nice upgrade but I agree with you, those coming from the 13 Pro might not see that much of the difference.

I think the biggest change is stability control. It’s insane how much better the 14 is to the 13

But you would if you knew what to look for. 14 pro does sooo much better at focusing and and blending. And the 4k really does stand out with better deatails and colors. 13 pro cinematic looks like a phone cinema while 14 pro looks like a budget grade pro cinema camera.
Dude, I was pretty excited about the action mode, but the fact that it can't shoot in 4k and you can't use both cinematic and action at the same time really made me realize that I'm good with my 13 pro, I'll skip the 14 and maybe upgrade whenever the 15 pro comes out. Great review by the way, I'm also a filmaker so it's nice to see a review from this point of view, you know? Because I know that the hardware is amazing and all that jazz that tech media usually covers, but what it really matters to me is how the cameras perform and how the post processing in the actual phone works. I'm totally with your wife when it comes to oversharpening. Compare the footage of the iPhone 14 Pro to a DSLR - the artificial sharpness really hurts my eyes!

That's why I always decrease the contrast in edit. 2 things I hate about iPhone camera: oversharpening and its tasteless color science

My XS was acting up so I upgraded. As someone who loves photography- I love it! Cinema mode has its limits, but wow it’s pretty incredible.
I come from shooting film 35mm and 16mm in the 80's and 90's... and Raw film always had to be properly Color-Corrected. Nothing that came out of the film camera was any good... unless it was Color Corrected. So I never expect a Digital camera or Smartphone to give me a great film look. I'm also a fcpx editor as well, so I fix most any color correction issues in post... The only thing I ask from any camera... is to give me a good Quality 4K video image (don't need more than that), and shoot great auto-focus. And Bryan is correct, everything else on a camera should be done Manually. The Cinematographer needs to always control the camera, and its photography... not the other way around.

Yes I've had this iPhone 14 pro for a week now and the first thing I noticed on the video is the white balance issue and the exposure issue, a so-called pro camera with no pro adjustments and just the jitteriness I found this on any video mode Apple needs to get on the ball their software engineers need to come out of the dark ages

During transferring of the footage if you hit the 3 dots you can actually tell it to send over the meta data and it will send all the focus info with it..

I came from a 12 pro to the 14 max and so many cool changes. I stopped updating my phone every release so every 2 years does my fine.
Upgraded from 7 plus to 14 pro max. Worth it for me. Wanted 48mp raw files to edit and more battery.

The problem with footage skipping/frames lost (10:36) seems to happen when I duplicate a video or save edits to a new clip. In the original video it's fine

Just upgraded from the 11 standard to 14 pro it’s quite an upgraded in terms of display and camera quality, even though the eleven takes GREAT videos the 14 is just better, would not upgrade if I would have had the 12 or higher, don’t think it’s worth it if you’re just „a normal user“

@@BryanAdamCastillo I mean like a walkthrough where you edit clips right in front of us. Beginning to end, not an overview. Your colors are so distinct and nice that I'd love to see how you get that look, even if it IS using the presets, just how you adjust them to fit different clips.

I have to encode all my iPhone clips as they are a variable frame rate. No glitches anymore. Haven’t tried cinematic mode yet though.
Agree that only having auto white balance is totally dumb. It just makes no sense. We have manual focus & exposure & white balance is just as crucial. I echo what you said, Apple give us a software update.

Great video thanks! So do you recommend shooting cinematic 4K at 60fps? If so do I change settings in premiere 23.97 and slow down footage to 80%
You can’t shoot 60fps in cinematic mode only 24/30 fps
I left premier pro a dozen years ago onto FCPX and love it. Great work on the vid. I’ve also heavily experimented w cin mode on 13 and 14 pro max. Worth the upgrade for filmmakers for sure but not general pop. The last video I uploaded has some cin mode 4K 24 which I really like. This mode is way underrated and looks amazing when done correctly. You should make some colour grades for fcpx. Lots of users. Great vid again

You're right... these are all software changes that HAVE to be able to be done... not to say its 'easy', but it has to be doable. I use other camera apps also, but I really WANT to be able to just stick with the native app because its just so easy. Good vid, thanks!

Still Cinematic mode??? And how do you blur the background like that? Is it something you can make happen on your iPhone, even after having recorded your video? Thanks :-)
most likely he's shooting the video with a dslr or mirrorless camera.
Got mine from using ipX and from there i saw drastic changes. But if you have the 13 series i wont recommend upgrading, coz its just the same thing except some camera adjustment which is minor and the island. I agree with your observations. Great video btw.
Like very much. I use the 12 pro max for my fairly new channel (still learning and attempting to find 'me') and waiting to see what the iPhone 15 brings with it. The 14 excites me from a photography / videography. I hadn't realised that there was a cinematic mode.....

Never used iphone before so I have nothing to compare, this year on Dec I start using iphone 14 pro max and all I could say it's pretty cool. I am Samsung user for years so note 20 discontinue and Samsung fold3 or 4 are still on improvement. I might get Samsung fold6 or higher or iphone 16 or above. 🤞🤟
I upgrated from 12 pro max to 14 pro max and I miss 12 camera, specially for close up shots, instagram boomerags. I hate the auto camera switching and focus is not right many times. Recording through a plane window became a really hard thing to do also.

Hi Riley and Bryan, are there luts created for Final Cut Pro x? I’m working on a music video for a friend and every time I try to edit his videos and my own real estate videos I run into problems with the iPhone 14 cinematic videos being too dark and the drone videos from my magic pro 2 drone being super dark. I uploaded my first edited video using Final Cut Pro on my UA-cam channel. It’s a real estate video. Now I’m working on his video. I already created two music videos for him using IMovie and InShot. So this 3rd video I shot and trying to edit needs to be way better. I just find it difficult to learn this software but I’m committed to learning it. Anyways feel free to look I my real estate video. I used my iPhone to record the voice over which I’m not to happy with it. Luckily for his video I have a sound track that he already made. The title of my latest FCFX video is “Toll Brothers Varen Model Luxury Home…” It’s a 3 Million dollar home. You can also check out the music videos I made for my friend in his chanel. If I stick around the same budget, I need to choose between a 13 pro 256Gb (in a colour I dont particularly like haha - that Alpine green) and a 14 pro 128Gb (in a colour I'd like a little more). Dammit - more space will be great, but why do I feel like the newest model will last me longer and make me happier..

Great video as always, I got the Iphone 13pro ( green one because the color is great ) and I have tried the 14pro, and to me it felt like a updated 13, plus I got my Canon R6 so I am not even using my phone that much, to me there is not much point on upgrading.

For sharpness, changing the resolution from 48mp to 12mp does nothing for the over-sharpening.
Maybe buying the freewell case and mist/nd filters?

Hello Bryan, I have the 13 Pro Max and probably won't upgrade, especially in view of the bugs. I have the R6 and may swap the 13PM for an iPhone SE 2nd Gen and put the extra money into Canon. For fun footage the SE would be enough. (Do you shoot your studio vids with the R5? Nice!)

Hey! Just discovered your content and I have to say I’m a big fan! Question. So I’m a beginner of sorts. I’m filming all of my footage on IPhone 14 pro max and all editing is done with VN mobile app. I plan to upgrade but that’s it for now. I’ve been hearing good and bad things about HDR. With what I have at the moment. Would you recommend that I have HDR on? Or should I turn it off? Thanks again for the great content!
I would always test everything, and stick to what looks great for you. Keep in mind, the audience you are trying to reach and impress... they are Not filmmakers or DPs.

What do you do about the colors changing when you upload the footage to your computer and premiere? Some people add LUTs but it doesn’t make it the same as what it looks like on the phone. Do you import into Final Cut?

so, this frame-skipping in all those videos is a real thing after all. I just thought, are all those guys on UA-cam "unable" to make a fluid video without glitches? They obviously are able of doing that, but obviously not with the new iPhone 14 Pro. So, do you think this (among other issues) could be fixed in the future software updates? + note : I was observing this frame-skipping issue not only on iPhone, but on other top-notch smartphones like S22 Ultra (when recording 4K video) as well. What is the trouble? Memory not fast enough? CPU not making it? Software or video recording algorithms not optimized? I simply want a fluid 4K in 60 fps for my 2,000 USD (in Europe).

What about Iphone's 13, all the photos are so colourfull, all colours not natural, if it sky blue, so it too much blue, as it isnt. So did Apple fixed it on iphone 14?

thats already a lot of differences between cinematic on 13pro vs 14pro...
I didn't find a like button there otherwise I did press the like button.
I having an issue when I load my cinematic video into Final Cut the video is always way to hot I have use the colour wheels to bring the light way down its sort of annoying to have to do this every time, is there a setting so my video and films are not so bright to the point that I can just about make out what's in the video. I guess there was a question in there somewhere.
