Hahah yes!! Thank you man!!
GOTHIC TROPIC commented on my video! I'm star struck 😆
GOTHIC TROPIC you're welcome man!
Potato Jet aria alexa vs red weapon?
Watching this in 360p resolution and it makes a difference too.
Great camera !
The Alexa looks like something you'd watch in a movie or ad while the iPhone looks like a Worldstar video you finally found in 1080p
Cool ! Now let's compare a bike with a Lamborghini
+alex.luxem. That's honestly a great idea..... $200k Lamborghini vs $12k sport motorcycle.... which one is faster..... I'd watch that....
Easy, acceleration the bike would win. In terms of racing it across a bendy track, the car would leave the bike in the dust in the cornering alone, while the bike could catch up on the straights. Basically what it comes down to is how bendy is your track -> car+bendy vs straights+bike, so to speak
i think you missed the jokes
Kouji82 /Borgman I think he meant a non-motor bike
Potato Jet id let it go up against a $12k ducati monster 821 (ferrari of motorcycles) 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
because most people doesn't understand professional camera features, they only think about :
1. Megapixel
2. Video recording resolution
like for example, Canon EOS C700, cost more than 28K (camera alone not include any accessories) but people mocking it "meh... it's only 8 megapixels while my phone is 20 megapixels booo...hooo.... it's only support HD 1080p recording while my phone support 4K 60 fps booo....hooo....) but it's night vs day when you compared the video quality.
that's why many cheap smartphone like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and other always advertise their "superb quality 40 Megapixels camera for selfie !" compare to Samsung that the flagship phone alone like S9+ or Note 8 is only 16 Megapixel camera, but the photo and video quality are superior than those "40 Megapixels" cheap smartphones
Somebody pin this coment. Well said!
Agreed
I 100% agree.
Even big UA-camrs like misterwhosthebos say that phone is better because it has more megapixels.
It really makes me cringe every time he says that.
Sensor size and lens quality are WAAAAAAAY more important than the amount of megapixels.
I don’t know a lot about sensors but does a 1 inch sensor with 108 megapixels look worse than a another 1 inch sensor with 16 megapixels (the reason I ask that is because the pixels of the 108 megapixel sensor are smaller (because there are more in the same area) so they capture less light)
Love this breakdown! And thank you for addressing the 4K myth. Resolution is the easiest thing to understand which is why it's often the first thing people compare, but by golly, there are so many other factors! Dynamic range and optics are HUGE as you so perfectly demonstrated. So this was great. Very entertaining too :)
the man himself
Oh jolly, great seeing you here. The man himself it is.
I'm still very impressed by how smartphone cameras have evolved the past 10 years. Back before the first iPhone was made, you could literally count the pixels of the video.
I mean, obviously - anyone with a brain knew the Arri Alexa was 100x better than a smartphone, but seeing the side-by-side, default-profile comparisons was really cool. Thanks for sharing!
you wanna say iphone users have no brain?
TheHomerGE but it's true
Your Question itself Is dumb
Everyone compares camera tech all the time but what non-pros don't understand is it's the glass in front of the sensor that really makes the big difference. I own and use both - and a top-end Sony rig. An expensive camera needs wildly expensive lenses to really shine. An iPhone with a $300 aspheric/wide angle adapter will give you extraordinarily good shots with decent lighting. The big camera's primes are far more expensive than the camera itself and for shooting sports on the Sony, a decent 80-100x box zoom lens will set you back at least $200,000. It's always the best camera is the one you have on you, the moment you need it. These days it's often a phone.
@@AndyGraceMedia just watch this video
The 80k camera is better? In other news water is wet lol
Purefoldnz actually..... water isn't wet.... Google it
Potato Jet touch it!
Potato Jet well then, why is my water so wet?
dude wetness of water is sensation... so, water is not wet itself
Purefoldnz Wet means that the surface the liquid on can be removed, water itself makes things wet but it itself isn't.
Holy shit this video condenses so much great info in just 5mins and with detailed examples!
RESPECT.
+Bhoopati Baboo thanks brother!
This is how comparison should look like, straight forward and not biased towards side. Great job man.
Woww.. This is such a great video. I will save it forever and show to all those great folks who says... "Ok, Cool, But why cant we shoot it on a cheaper camera, we have 4K resolution in it."
You really saved my ass. Instead of explaining things for a week, I can just forward them this video.
You are really amazing.
Thanks man.
Yeah but there are "cheaper camera" options that aren't a fucking iPhone.
Then they will say "We cannot notice a difference"
Totally agree with you but he could have shot the video with the iPhone in a flat mode with some of the great apps that exist now, which provide you with manual control on the iPhone and post produce them afterwards a little bit to compensate for the price difference.. :P
Anyways, there are movies filmed with iPhone and I bet you guys couldn't tell which ones they are if you are not told.
Atwa Jesper
it's not just color and resolution it's also bokeh and it's pretty obvious on iphone-footage that it can't do bokeh, btw bokeh means background blur
Bombastus I know what Bokeh is and BtW, I own an iPhone 7 Plus and it definitely does Bokeh natively.
Thank you for showing the world that I am superior.
+Alexa McGinnis lol! Also I hope you don't have an amazon echo
Alexa Maris lol
but...are you for sale? 🤣
Love it man! Great work on this. :) Love your Iceland stuff too!
+Matt WhoisMatt Johnson appreciate it Matt!!
This is actually a great example. I always try to give people, especially beginners the idea that the camera doesn't really matter (I personally think lenses are much, much more important than the camera itself). Of course the camera matters, that's pretty obvious but I try to tell beginners the opposite that what's really important is your skill with the camera. Example, I'm sure you could shoot a better version of the same script with an iPhone than I can with my Sony A6500, and I'm no slouch with a camera but it's about learning the craft.
All that said this is an excellent video that really does sum up the ultimate differences, once you have the craft down. Far too many people expect their skill to become better because they have a better camera.
iphoHe!!!! around 3:00!!!
Nice video, Alexa cameras are the beasts of cine cams!!!!
I must say, as a cinematographer, the iPhone is surprisingly good! The Alexa is a great camera but keep in mind it can't shoot 4K as it is not a 4K sensor. They claim 2.8k, but this iis only true if you are shooting using the entire 4:3 sensor which requires anamorphic lenses for a widescreen end product. Their 4K recording is upscaled from 2.8k.
The Sony F55 is a whole other story! Real 4K and recorded in 16bit linear. I think that the Alexa is outdated and no one wants to admit it. In modern 4k cinemas movies shot on the Alexa are looking outdated. The Alexa's version of RAW is also not a linear RAW and not 16bit. Have a go, you will be blown away!
Thanks for your effort in producing this piece.
Kind regards
Willem
resolution is just a illusion 😂😂
You Tech first :D
who the heck are you?
Ah yes, the good ole "iPhohe."
And people say Apple doesn't create new things anymore

Fam is Asian, he got the iPho.
This is a such a life save video!
I wad going to buy the iPhone 7 but instead now I ordered the alexa camera.
Thank you man!
Can I brought your Alexa for few days
I definitely prefer the Alexa but there’s still something charming about the iPhone, especially during the beach sequence.
the only thing brings me back to your channel is you are extremely informative and detail oriented... thanks.... for writing everything every details on screen., helps ALOT.
Please do that comparison with a decent lens for example a Canon 5d mk iv or the d810. The gap will be quite small i guess
On it ;)
I feel like this is clearly WAY more educational than a real comparison, and I'm okay with it. Nice job.
Great video!
Andy Feliciotti thanks!!
I never realised how much of an impact the camera had on creating that 'cinema' look. All of those shots from the ARRI could easily have been from a movie.
This is a great video it really is amazing how well these cell phones have become we all know that the best camera you have is the one you have on you
The Traveling Breeze 100%
This video was a very unfair but absolutely necessary comparison. Thank you! I could watch videos about the Arri cam all day
Make a day vlog with the Alexa rig 😂
Haha! Funny that you mention that, next time I have a day with the Alexa, I'm planning to shoot a normal daily vlog look as EPIC as possible. lol
YES!!! 😃😃😃😱😱😱
He will get wrist cancer lol
this is kind of video everyone on this planet should watch it. great man...just great
Holy crap this really puts stuff in perspective great video man I would love to see more comparisons!
Your right 4k is half the difference. I really wanna rent this camera now...
Fantastic dynamic range on the Alexa!!
I'm glad you did this. My wife and I were just discussing that photography is becoming a lost art because (IMO) we have become inundated with lower quality pics and vids and we're starting to take high quality creations for granted. I am not a good photographer in any sense but I greatly appreciate the skill and equipment it requires to make quality creations.
Maniacal Offroad I like your truck 😬
Potato Jet Tyvm!
At the piano player bit another thing that made a big difference in the feel of the footage was shallow depth of field created by the Alexa.
Excellent video! This demonstrates very well why the whole iPhone filmmaking trend is just silly.
I'd like to see the Arri Alexa put up against a Panasonic G7. The iPhone has a tiny sensor and is doomed to look poor in comparison to even a marginally good camera. I've shot video on the G7 indoors with just the kit lens that looks just as good to me as what I'm seeing from the Alexa here.
Another thing: 4K matters for cheap gear because a 4:2:0 4K workflow downscaled to 4:2:0 1080p at the end effectively has an intermediate format of 4:4:4 which is why downscaled 4K looks so much better than native 1080p from non-pro cameras. Even $4000 pro 1080p camcorders don't record 4:4:4 video. Working with 4:2:0 1080p source clips means you're starting out with a seriously damaged image and it'll look like exactly what it is.
Jody Bruchon The iPhone film making trend is silly because it isn't as good as an $80K+ camera? The iPhone 7 is around $600 and I personally preferred the iPhone 7 in some scenarios like on the beach because of its vibrant colours however the other camera was clearly better with the greater sharpness and a less grainy look especially in low lighting. The iPhone 7 still has a fantastic camera that is much better value and still holds up very well to this 80K camera so yes I think the iPhone film making trend is understandable
After seeing the iPhone footage, i just laughed a LOT here when the Alexa shot just started rolling in my screen hahaah.
Of course i was expecting a light and day difference, but it was just too too much hahaha
Sony's mirrorless camera vs Alexa. Let's see if the a7s can compete.
amangray films it cannot, once you start pushing the image around. The a7s is great but that 8-bit codec just kills it
but with an external recorder such as Shogun.. it might compete :)
Michal Stym Patek still 8-bit 4:2:0 so no not really. Simply put, it's not designed to be heavily graded
How does the Alexa stack up against the newly announced Canon C200 at 12bit 4K DCI ?
amangray films if you disregard resolution, the Alexa is still the best camera on the market in regards to most other things...
what are the dislikes for? I can't understand how can someone dislike a video like this, such informative and fun to watch
Now let's compare a Intel HD graphics 2000 with a GTX 1080ti x2 SLI
or a GTX 1080ti x2 SLI vs. a RTX 3090 ti x2 NVlink
Thanks for this! Of course iPhone doesn't compare to Alexa, but it's still interesting to see how the quality compares. Considering what home video cameras were like even 10 years ago it's amazing how great a little iPhone cam can be!
Super interesting video! :D
I really liked the juxtaposition when changing cameras and your sense of humor, and that you didn't beg for a subscription or like
That vid just unreal, super cool, keep growing,I'm your new subscriber!)
4K isn't overrated, it was ahead of its time, and it's been poorly deployed due to the multiple facets of technology infrastructure that need to be working to make it cost-effective for producers and consumers. As a capture format it's fantastic. The S9+ 4K 60p is amazing. As an intermediate, its tricky. Capture in 4K, work in 2K. Your 1080p distribution will look way better thanks to the 4K capture. Sure, capturing on a tiny sony IMX 277 8-bit sensor used in iPhones vs Arri's full frame 12-bit makes a good case for shooting 2K instead of 4K, but it doesn't really mean 4K is overrated. That's really kind of a moot point in the topic IMO.
The holy grail of music (blink 182, untitled) was recorded in that house
h*ly shit! You're right!
OH YEAH! LOL I WOULDNT NOTICE THIS! :O
JeżTritsus a ty tu co robisz XDD
This is really great video! We rented Blackmagic URSA mini for our music video. Not as great as this Alexa obviously, but so much better than the DSLR we shoot our behind the scenes with.
85k! holy crap. So either buy that or at least 2 new cars. :S lol
Most people even in the industry don't actually buy these cameras - they rent them (and just about everything else). The more expensive the camera, the more that is true.
Exactly. Especially when it comes to shoot in 3D. And extra especially when it comes to IMAX. (as far as I remember, there are only 4 IMAX cameras in the world)
TBH I was expecting it to cost more than that.
sgtGiggsy ARRI made a collaboration with IMAX so now there is an ARRI ALEXA IMAX xD
PiccoloNamek this is the cheapest Alexa tho, the SXT costs around 120.000 and there is a new camera that is not even sold, the Alexa 65
id say one of the most important factors with camera quality would be the video bit rate. for example if you use an iPhone camera in the woods you'd see bits bunching up and it looks sort of dirty and distorted in some parts but on an Alexa you can see the outline of almost every single leaf in the shot. a large sensor with a high bit-rate, high res, high data image is really what most of the money is going on in my opinion
Is that HD means hd(1280x720) or fhd(1920x1080) on ALEXA?
chan oh 1920x1080 FHD at 24fps, in prores422HQ
Aha that explains the shitty quality. Why not set it to 4k and than downsample?
Wybrem Probably to give the iPhone a chance lol
Wybrem HAHAHA "shitty quality" are you kidding if he just said it was 4k you would have believed him there is no difference on UA-cam especially on a phone or normal computer
Just going to mention, image quality isn't the only reason to shoot on a cinema camera. They offer a lot of features you don't get with say a DSLR and obviously, not with a phone. They are much quicker to use, with settings mapped to buttons and not hidden in menus. They are designed to be able to be operated by more than one person at once. They have better video outputs for monitors such as SDI and they are very customisable since you can add the parts you need to your rig. There are loads more, and a lot of it doesn't matter if you're just making youtube videos, but if you're on a big movie set then you really can't work without them.

+Wesam Khalfalla وسام خلف الله yas!!!
Thanks finally a video that explains why you want to use different cameras for different projects. Its so much more than "it shoots 4k " And one camera is not for every project i would never shot a documentary on a Alexa to cumbersome, take a FS5 or c200 for this stuff and so on !
that house... GTA5???
This channel gonna blow up 💥
Wtf you recording on the iPhone in 720p?
I am working with all kind of Alexas all the time and know exactly what the difference is but this is a nice video. Have never seen a comparison.
What's the song during the first comparison, on the beach?
the band is Inspired and The Sleep, still trying to find the song.
Inspired and the Sleep - Sweet Company
Wow, I have never subscribed to a channel faster in my life.
2:36 explains it all....
Only 7k subscribers. U deserve lots more man.
Your actually shooting 1080p 60fps. You could change it by going to Settings > Photos and Camera > Scroll down till you see "Record Video". Press that. In iPhone 7, change it to 4K 30fps. In iPhone 8 or 10, change it to 4k 60fps. I hope this helped you. :)
@PotatoJet You can actually fiddle with the Iphones camera settings to get a better shot the what you have. Also there's a few attachments you can buy for the Iphone to help get a better image
2:53 iphone* not a Iphohe
4:33 again

@@peanutboy123 Read that again.
It's the same as anything professional, I have experience in audio recording, and the equipment and setup that allows you to record the flattest audio possible is what allows you the leeway to do anything with the sound you want mix-wise, which is why it's so malleable and capable of sounding professional when you work with it. Same thing with the flat image that the camera actually records in before post.
Can someone explain how resolution isn't everything? It seems like if there are more pixels the image should automatically look better/sharper.
I think the easiest way to put it is that resolution is like the size of a painting. It matters but what's more important is how much time/effort/type of brush/type of paint/etc. Similar with video, technically I can render out an 8k video that's 10 minutes long, and encode it out to a few MB. But that would be like buying a giant canvas, and giving an artist a pencil and 1 minute to complete it. That's an extreme example but companies are putting out high res dimensions, but not the proper optics, codec, data rate, color space, etc to go with it. But they can technically claim 4k in bright yellow letters on the box and since it's the easiest concept to understand, it's what the general public looks at.
But really, even HD has a ton of pixels so when you look at a frame and think it looks good, yes you are looking at size, but you're also seeing many more aspects that make it look sharp. Hope that makes sense.
Cool thanks very much for your reply :).
Potato Jet that is the best way I have ever heard anyone explain it
Because the composition of the pixels matters more than the amount themselves. The iPhone can film 8k for all it wants, the colors are still going to be flat and it’s still going to lack depth of field
Technically digital resolution is only one component of overall resolution, which is the smallest element of detail that can be resolved in the image. Resolution is fundamentally limited by noise, and pixels are one kind of noise called quantization noise. You can reduce this by adding more pixels. However, there are a number of other types of noise in the image, which cause the pixels to record an inaccurate value. This is caused, by among other things, the sensor not getting enough light, and the image compression throwing away information in order to save space and speed up image capture.
Another thing that people forget, is that cameras have two kinds of resolution. There is spatial resolution, but there is also color resolution. Color resolution is just the number of different values that can be used to describe the color of a pixel. This information is also very important to making the final image look good, and while iPhone has more pixels, it has a much rougher description of what color each pixel is.
The Arri Alexa Mini is rarely used for features. The Arri Alexa 65 is the one used.
Как раз выбирал между айфоном и алексой, спасибо бро
First off, great video. Subscribed after seeing less than 3 minutes. A rare occurrence indeed.
@3:10 - was that Jude Law?
S23 and iphone 15: "Run it back!!"
Anyone else feel like the iPhone was under utilised? I don't own nor use one, I have a 3T, but I've seen plenty of footage from it and compared to, especially in the first film reel, it looks really awful!
Christopher Flanagan it feels very weird to me.
I mean it's obvious pro camera would be better, but iPhone footage looks way too grainy, like it was shot with a 300% digital zoom.
When you check out cinematic videos on UA-cam filmed on iPhone or any recent smartphone really, it doesn't look even remotely that bad
because of lightning. When shoots on good lighting, smartphone videos don't look that bad. Here in this video, he compared both under lackluster lighting especially the indoor music scene. Of course, you can just use proper lighting equipment to make the iPhone pics look much better, but it's not the point of this video because he wants to show the capability of professional cinema camera. Even with poor lighting that makes iPhone videos look like shit, Alexa videos looks super good.
And really, it's all physics. iPhone (or any smartphone) sensor size is too small to compete with high-end cameras.
Christopher Flanagan I have the iPhone 7 plus & the video shows a million times better, especially in 1080p 60fps. Idk how in the hell he got those horrible shots of the iPhone 7 plus but my iPhone shoots amazing videos.
Michael J Yeah that’s straight up not true. They might look good to you if you’ve never seen anything better, but I can guarantee you the iPhone 7 doesn’t shoot “amazing” video. It’s good enough for Facebook, sure, but relative to almost anything else it doesn’t even come close to good, much less amazing. The D3100 shoots better video.
He probably used the stock camera app, which sucks for this type of stuff, those videos you see on UA-cam usually use the Filmic Pro app which is so much better
This is so crazy! This is the first video I ever saw from you :D and I watched every video ever since.
like for alexa
1:45 that moment when you spot your favourite bike in a video :P
I don't know what's wrong with your Iphone, but my Iphone 7 makes much better videos, than you showed.
Of course, I agree with the fact that Alexa much better than any phone camera.
VeltistonY the bits he showed were zoomed in
Tom Caine Except he did specify that there was no post editing. I bet both of these videos were just pick up an film, no tweaking the settings etc. It's possible to get good footage on smartphones, but not without effort, and it won't have a lot of detail.
it’s shot raw as well. the iPhone isn’t.
Liked your plug for that band at the end, never would've listened to them otherwise. thanks dude great video, i don't even cinematography
IPHOHE
It's when you properly light your scene like you would on a proper production will you really see the difference.
Wow, what a presentation. How cool the video alexa takes... and the way you show the LUTs... Really enjoyed it, liked it and subscribed!
I only like a video once a year, but I found this one very interesting... so I liked it :) Good job.
Hi there, terrific video, thanks. Sorry to drag you even lower but what do you think of the iPhone 7 camera, when compared to the iPhone 7 Plus camera. I’m very new to this and I’m wondering if the iPhone 7 camera is too basic to be any good at all. Am considering an iPhone 11 as a potential replacement. But in no hurry because of tight budgets.
Great overview, specially for the people that dont understand why cinema cameras are more expensive than regular cameras, even more than smartphones
Have you tried filing in Log using your iPhone and then in post, added the Arri Alexa, LUT?
Man.. that thing makes everything look dope af
the music is really great, loved it
This is by far the realist review ever
I am more interested in an Arri Alexa vs. Sony a6500 or Sony a9 comparison to see the differences. Also I am not sure why cinema lenses cost so much especially the prime lens. For zooms you need it to be par-focal so I understand, but for primes?
I love how you have so much info and you still makes funny jokes here and there all in 5:27 min. Well done!
Pllleeaaasssdeee make another comparison but with using FiLMiC Pro on the iPhone! There you can control everything manually and even record log!
What about the dynamic range and post production abilities? Can i get mutually effective post-production range on iphone? How different they are on that section? Thx
Thanks, man! Now I know which one I am going to get! It was so hard to decide!
Your videos are soooooooo good! Keep it up!
Luek Wong thanks brotha
You should do this with the LG G6. It has manual setting for video which would help!
the Alexa beach Version looks like one of them "this was shot with the new IPhone" commercials 😂😂
did you have an app loaded onto the phone like "Filmic Pro" it basically allows you to adjust , exposure, shallow depth field, FPS settings and even your ISO settings.....just asking
good video, would be interesting a comparison Alexa with a Nikon d4s.
wow this was an awesome comparison video!
I would like to see your iPhone footage graded to match. I almost feel that with a slight toning, lifting blacks and adding warm filter the footage would be almost identical. I know you are doing raw comparisons.
What camera app did you use on the iPhone? I use Filmic Pro on Android and it's a great app, allow full manual control AND lets you set the resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, video bitrate, audio format, audio bitrate, colour curve and more. It's a bit clunky but can really produce great results. I'd love to see a comparison using such an app if you used the stock camera on the iPhone.
thanks for your effort to show this, i always want to know what is alexa difference from iphone
