  • Thanks for checking out our Soundgarden reaction. We decided to checkout 4th of July for the holiday with the same name. We thought it could be a good song to do on the fourth. Um... yeah we were wrong about that lol. It was a cool song, but it wasn't really relevant to the holiday lol.

I have also heard that Chris has said it’s about PTSD for veterans and how fireworks can trigger them to have attacks thinking there is gun fire going off and often we are celebrating the veterans service on the 4th of July. So it’s a bit ironic that we do that and potentially hurt them by celebrating their service. And I see where it comes from but also have read this story of his acid trip a few times too.
Great review! Chris’s solo stuff is great as well as all Soundgarden albums and his lyrics on Audioslave are some of my favourite of all time.

Saying Grunge is like "Meat on a smoker" is such an apt metaphor, very insightful! Grunge is dark, sorrow, hurt, pain that is so deep that it's become lethargic. That feeling of being so down that you just don't have the energy to do anything about it. The lyrics are usually poetic, sometimes meaningful too. I'd LOVE to see you two react to "Comet" by The Midnight sometime! Synthwave is such an amazing genre!

Grunge was a reaction to the previous decade of taking showmanship ( laser light shows, big pyrotechnics, hair spray, and glitter ) as far as it could go. Talent, great songwriting and passionate perfomances began to cut through the plastic, industry-driven, self-parody that eighties product had become. The opposite of performers in day-glo spandex, hair spray, and lipstick was those in ripped jeans or nylons, with unwashed hair and smudged make-up.

Yesssss, love you for this. Happy 4th!
When I think of "grunge" I think of dark abstract poetry combined with slow, sludgy, distorted guitar riffs.
Most of the bands labeled as grunge came out of Seattle, known for the constant rain which can also be very depressing. I think you hear that in their music.

    - The footage is of nuclear tests.
    - The song was based around a trip they took to an Native Reservation and dropped acid.
    - There was this guy from Seattle who was pretty good at playing guitar, called Jimi Hendrix. Who created a psychedelic take on the Star Spangled Banner. This was Soundgarden's shoutback.
    - To show how good this song is, the two voices singing are both Chris Cornell, which really shows off his range in a single song.

Lex i love your analogy for grunge. I feel that for sure. It's imperfect, it's real, it's raw, it's dark, but they don't take themselves too seriously. There's almost a crunch in the guitar riffs (this being a great example of what I mean). There's a haunting quality to a lot of it that reaches into your soul..... early 90's Seattle rock bands is what you're looking at here, in terms of what's actually classified as grunge.

I mean not all grunge is post punk rock, nirvana fits that description but none of the other big 4 fit that description especially SG and Alice In Chains. Grunge was more of a movement and acne and not a specific or genre, Alice In Chains sounds absolutely nothing like Nirvana but they’re still both 2 of the big 4 grunge bands. AIC were much more inspired by bands like Black Sabbath than any post punk stuff, Pearl Jam was also like more stadium rock type stuff but nothing like post punk.

I think the word you were looking for near the beginning was "poetic." Chris's lyrics are often poetic. They're meant to evoke a feeling, rather than being a literal description of anything. In some ways I like this form of lyricism more, because it encourages you to listen to the voice part as an equal to the other instruments.

My take on ”grunge”: Heavy bluesy Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin grooves but with a more layered and progressive sound, at times almost jazzy, arty (and sometimes experimental) postpunk/new wave edge and feel set to Beatlesish melodies and introspective philosophical lyrics. I recommed you do ’Fell On Black Days’ next. I think you’ll might find the lyrics still relevant today.

Beautiful description of Grunge 😁 It was a term coined by journalists about the bands coming out of Seattle in the late 80s early 90s. The main ones being Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. They are actually all quite different, Nirvana more punk influenced, Soundgarden more blues rock. But it struck a chord at the time as a reaction to the flashy ‘hair metal’ of the 80s, because it was more authentic and raw.

Brad, that was very astute and introspective to realize the truthful assessment of Lex having a more sensitive ear to both the new music and genres you two are delving into. She truly does pick up much more of the artists' true intent on first listening. Your mind has to have it's 3rd eye wide open to notice much of the nuance and intent this music has on the listener. You are more analytical and she is more open to deeper meanings of the same song. You two are very entertaining, and it is a joy to watch you learn about these bands. Keep it up, and you two always have a free hotel if you are passing through the 'LOU. Have a great fourth, B&L. Try "Just Like Suicide" from this same album. It is beautiful and painful simultaneously, Chris wrote it as a harbinger of his own nearing suicide. Which caused Chester Pennington, Linkin Park, to kill himself, in response. They were best friends, with Chris being a mentor as well. Two beautiful souls, gone....

Grunge came about as a reaction to the super polished pop and rock of the 80s to make something rawer and more authentic and with a particular focus on the darker sides of life - in particular addiction, mental issues and abuse. This sort of evolved into nu-metal in the 90s, with the same lyrical themes and focus on downtempo songs with downtuned, distorted guitars but with hiphop and tribal music influences.

"Grunge" evolved from the 1980s American underground -- one of the most significant movements in all of rock history.

3:58 You were close on the visuals. The video had been playing old capture footage of nuclear detonation tests. Land and sea, both. The ship in that footage was an old decommissioned WW2 vessel being used in nuke tests during the Cold War, along with many others back in the days of nuke testing.

Grunge is basically a type of post-punk/metal, or rock that came out the other side of both. I dunno, but I went to loads of punk shows in the 80s, and nearly every one had at least one metal band in the lineup. Then I started hearing "grunge," and it felt like a natural progression, or a mutation that totally fit. The people in all those bands were going to the same kinda shows throughout the 80s, just in a different town.

Yes Girl, this IS grunge, and Finally!! Someone does my favourite Soundgarden song!! I also always thought it was about war btw, but apparently it's about being high. Would have been a great analogy though. You guys are still missing Stevie Ray Vaughan though. Gotta do Voodoo Child live, can't die without having heard Stevie.

this is my ABSOLUTE FAVE....Soundgarden song......Jesus Christ Pose is a CLOSE SECOND. But this song is DEEEEP. It is soulfull, dark, very GRUNGE. But man.....it gripped me from THE FIRST moment I heard it. And I will say this, I love the MUSIC.....not the lyrics. I cant make any sense of the lyrics....the sound....the SOUND.....not the lyrics....is what made me love this song.
And the fact that LEX said she did ACID during this react.......makes me love her EVEN MORE. Which I thought was impossible. You cute, and enlightened. Man.....

Ok but Grunge was king when I was in HS and as much as I wanna go full on Aslan and say "don't quote the old magic to me witch, I was there when it was written," I can't because honestly, Lex' descriptions of grunge might be the best I've ever heard. Honestly with most of the music from that era, there is no deciphering the lyrics straight on. You gotta come at them sideways cause that was how they were written.
    Anyway Happy 4th everyone!
