So many times Lex just GETS IT, especially with grunge.
Yeah , she hit the nail on the head when she said it’s more sensitive and self reflective than 80’s rock. I distinctly remember when Smells Like Teen Spirit came out and we were blown away and then Pearl Jam blew up too. Definitely a vibe. I had a major crush on Chris❤️ RIP🙏🏼
Well said . I agree 100%
also with literally everything else
She reacts with her gut, feelz. The lyrics are more for the head analyzing.
RIP Chris Cornell. You are unbelievably missed 💕✌😪
I’m still so sad about his passing 💔
Agreed
So tragic, man. Shouldn’t have happened 😭
I just discovered this song today. It honestly brings tears to my eyes knowing I never knew of such an amazing song until many years after Chris has been gone
One of the best voices over any RR band
I really liked Lex’s description of what Grunge is. Chris Cornell absolutely had range. Check out “Slaves and Bulldozers” by Soundgarden. Hunger Strike is such a special song, their vocals together were absolutely beautiful. R.I.P. Chris. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
Indeed. 'Slaves and Bulldozers' is a good show of Chris' power
Beyond the Wheel
Amber I agree 100% on your take about lex's thoughts on the dif between the 80's and 90's
Agreed 💯
Lex's description of grunge is the best I've ever heard someone put into words..👍
Lex nailed the whole transition from 80’s rock to Grunge….good stuff.
YES SHE DID!!! I couldn't have put it better myself!!
That was a pretty accurate analysis
Yeah that was a pretty damn good analogy she had there for sure
Lex killed it with the 80's projection to 90s introspection.
Yet another perspicacious commentary from Lex.
Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell harmonizing on this song gives me chills every time I hear this song
Chris Cornell's wail was just godly, legend!
Grunge is more emotional and self reflective. More honest. And it’s more raw.
And they sing with conviction
I don't consider guns n roses hair/metal but from that Era I'd say guns were the exception their music was really raw and honest that's why I think they were such fans of grunge.
Lex going nuts when Chris first goes high is all of us the first time and every time we hear this.
I always end up crying when I hear his voice
The way Eddie sings, they called that "yarl". A lot of singers did it after him.
I always catch myself doing the yarl while just casually singing because of Eddie.
Scott weiland from stone temple pilots had a similar tone
And then Creed came along and ruined it
6:23 yes ma'am! Isn't Chris amazing!!? When you reacted to his scream, the chills had just ran up my legs. Never fails.
"SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN" LYRIC vid next please..... this album was a one time collab in Tribute to Andrew Wood lead singer of Mother Love Bone who died of a heroin OD on 3-19-1990 (and was Chris' best friend and one-time roommate)..... you have to hear it, Chris's vocals are chilling and the lyrics are POWERFUL!!! Thanks for this one.... Grunge rocks and so do you guys!!🤗😎👏👏👏
Chris wrote all the songs. He said he was pissed at Andy for dying and "Say Hello to Heaven" is basically a letter to Andrew telling him all the things he wished he could tell him.... side note: Chris Cornell passed not too long ago on 5-18-2017, at the age of 52.
I second Say Hello to Heaven. So powerful
Haha this time you beat me to it Tina! You and me are always very adamant when it comes to people choosing the right Chris Cornell songs and videos! ;D I've seen you on so many other channels reacting to Chris that I should have expected to see you here as well.
Until we meet again ;)
@@matthansen758 😂🤣😂 And oh noooo.... I'm becoming a "regular"!!!😅😅
I was 19 when this song was released and I first heard the opening notes!! Then.... Chris and Eddie opened their mouths and I heard their voices and the words they were saying..... I knew instantly I'd found my people!! 🤗
It hit me like nothing ever had and like nothing has since!!! I feel Grunge and specifically Soungarden/Chris and Pearl Jam/Eddie on a level that I can't put into words.... I think it's a "Soul" thing... So yeah, its important, at least to me!! Music is powerful and unites us humans like NOTHING else can... See you around Matt!! 😁😎
@@tinagilbert8902 Thanks for your words, same ♡
Say Hello 2 Heaven reminds me of my cousin who also committed suicide, his name was also Andrew.
Lex nailed it. Grunge is all about empathy for the music, the feeling and the audience. Most real Grunge bands didn't put much energy into appearance. You also HAVE to possess real singing skills to do well in the genre.
Lex knows her vocalists and she did correctly identify the baritonist.
Fun fact... Everyone in pearl jam besides Eddie was originally in mother love bone. The lead singer of love bone died and this was essentially a tribute record to their friend. Cornell had Eddie sit in on the recording and this is where pearl jam was born.
No. Only Stone and Jeff were in Mother Love Bone. And Eddie had already joined Stone's new band with Jeff and now Mike. They were originally called Mookie Blaylock. They were still in the process of getting to know each other and writing. Even if this didn't happen there would still be a Pearl Jam
@@abrahamesparza01 Green River broke up giving rise to Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. Andrew Wood fronted a band called Malfunkshun before becoming the lead singer of Mother Love Bone. We need some reactions to Green River, Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. And does no one cover The Screaming Trees?
@@salishseacycling yea I knew that. Was just talking about Pearl Jam though
@@salishseacycling "Halo of Ashes" is like butter dribbling into my ears.
Already been said but Pearl Jam were already together when this happened. Jeff and Stone were in MLB. Stone started jamming and writing with Mike. Mike wanted Jeff involved. Then came Eddie and several drummers. Since 98 Matt Cameron has been on drums so every current member of Pearl Jam is in this video
If all you've heard from Chris Cornell is "chill" you haven't explored Chris Cornell enough!! Try Rusty Cage or Outshined (Soundgarden) or Cochise (AudioSlave).
They are great suggestions 💯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤙🏼
Super unknown. Is my favorite song
Slaves And Bulldozers aswell!!
"Spoonman"...anything that can be called "chill", came later, like "Black Gold Sun" had a more mainstream sound..but still great music..He also did a bunch of covers in his final years (Nothing Compares 2 you)..I forgot what great and versatile artist he was, I miss him...he was about my age..makes you think
If you want to explore his versatility even further, check out his solo stuff. Here's an amazing live performance of "When I'm Down" from Euphoria Morning: ua-cam.com/video/2ZrvbZ7_CSk/v-deo.html
Another particular favorite of mine is his theme for Casino Royale. "You Know My Name" is distinctly his, yet fits quite comfortably among the best Bond themes. ua-cam.com/video/HlQsC-o2y5c/v-deo.html
Lex is absolutely right in saying Eddie has a more "Round" sound. That is actually a musical term for that low larynx, and pushed back sound. Well done miss, that's a superb pick up.
Grunge music is all about outwardly expressing your inner emotional struggles
You can outwardly express your inner emotional struggles with other genres not just grunge. Jonathan Davis is a perfect example with Korn.
I didn’t state that you couldn’t use other genres to do the same. But it seems to me that grunge music does it best. Seems like majority of grunge song are about exactly that, more so than any other genre.
@@enderwiggin5572 Grunge sucked anyway, was just for disgruntled teens that thought everything sucks, school, parents life etc. Sucked even more for them when Kurt Cobain blew his brains out.
@@vinniedixon1140 Bruh what
@@everychannel1025 I stick by what I said
Listen to Soundgarden “outshined” for Chris Cornell belting it out.
And "Jesus Christ Posse".
Slaves and Bulldozers or Room a Thousand Years Wide...I can't decide
@@ryukan250 S&B for sure. Both are great tho
I love that a sensitive and reflective genre like grunge took over hair metal and was so popular. Wish we had such good taste nowadays.
Have I mentioned how much I love Lex’s enthusiasm?
Brad is always doing the "we are the world" dance.
Yeah and I don't know what Lex is dancing to, she moves to a beat totally unrelated to what she's listening to, so funny to watch.
Grunge's theme song "Say Hello to Heaven" Temple of the Dog
I was starting to think Brad was digging the song so much, that we wouldn't get a lyric breakdown. "Definitely Robin Hood vibes". Well said. With these 2 legendary singers performing together, the meaning of the song often gets ignored.
I watched Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park singer) perform this song live together and it was one of the most incredible things I've witnessed in my life
One of the greatest rock albums ever made
BRAD: It's got more 'urt, urt, urt' to it.
You're gonna have a long and happy marriage! 😉
Two of the greatest voices in Rock History united. This album was a gift to the fans.
Lex is exactly correct about the vibe she got from the two music genres.
The song Call Me A Dog, from the same album, is in my opinion a gem. Chris' vocals are just as smooth as they get. Beautiful song.
That said, Hunger Strike was the mandatory introduction to Temple Of The Dog ;)
"Say Hello to heaven", from the same album, is a good example of Chris' voice. It's also a beautiful song, and fun to play on the guitar.
Chris Cornell was an ELITE singer... generational. So much range, so much soul, so much horsepower
I need to spend a day in Lex's mind. The descriptions are priceless and you get to your point eventually. 😂😂😂
Grunge was very "introspective". I think that's the word you seek Lex👌.
I Love the way lex gets into the description and feeling the songs in her own way.🤘 Can you react to "Say Hello 2 Heaven"
Your description of grunge is so on point and accurate it's like you were there in the thick of the 90's with us
Omg I effing love Lex! She is on top of this genre! ahaha! She just knows it. It's not something she has to dig deep to understand or get or feel. It just all comes natural to her. Love it!
Lex is such a good example of the feminine energy. Brad represents the sacred masculine very well. Much love yin yang baby
Chris had an exceptional 4 octave range that was always mind blowing I think he keeps gowing higher on Cochise.
Lex is the best rock reactor 🧡 I love how she just takes the journey with the music and it hits her ears. She makes me re-appreciate songs I've heard thousands of times.
The two voices together…. Absolute perfection ❤
That song is one of the most beautiful moments produced in the 90's. It just humbles you every time you hear it.
I miss Chris Cornell so much. His later stuff was so articulate and had so much feeling in it. But you seriously need to listen to “Say Hello To Heaven” now. Official video to actually hear how high he gets. The live versions get muffled at the end.
Exactly. His song-writing in "The Keeper" and "Sunshower" are amazing also.
" I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence. But I can't feed on the powerless when my cups already overfilled "
The word I came up with is retrospective. They feel, they write, they express. I love this song. Always makes me emotional for some reason.
2:00 "It's in the middle!" haha! lol - never heard Cornell's voice described that way! : D ....and 3:25 when both voices harmonize - that's how we ALL feel!!!
Cornell's voice is what an ANGEL would sound like..
You two are awesome! I love watching you respond and break down songs that play such an emotional role in my life! Subscribed! Keep up the good work! 🤘😝
"Say Hello to Heaven" best song from the Temple. It is about Andrew Wood - the lead singer from Mother Love Bone (He O. D.) and Eddie Vedder, joined them to become Pearl Jam. The song "Would?" from Alice In Chains is also about Andrew Wood hence the name "Would?" Both songs are masterpieces! Ty guys for keeping the Grunge Train on the tracks!
Ed’s voice is round and textured but what is unique compared to all that followed after his success…….his is SO clear and cuts through the music. R.I.P. Chris
Great reaction, I appreciate your grind, you guys have come a long way in less than 10 months. Keep grinding!
You should listen to Soundgarden's The Day I Tried To Live. That song showcases some of Chris Cornell's amazing vocal range as well.
Day I tried to Live is Amazing song with Chris doing absolutely F'N everything vocally & a GR8 companion video!!
Chris had a 4 octave vocal range and is on all the lists of top rock vocalists ever! My all time favorite live performance of anyone is his solo song When I’m Down live at the Troubadour. The vocals will give you all the chills and goosebumps you could ever ask for!!!
Also check out The Day I Tried to Live by Soundgarden. Temple of the Dog is just one album but many great songs. I love Call me a Dog and All Night Thing but his best vocal showcase is Say hello to heaven. And yes grunge was the change from big hair 80s bands singing about rock and girls to being introspective and talking about feelings and depression and struggles ❤️🙂
Lex's descriptions of vocal sounds and high notes being hit are adorable 💗
Mad Season didn't make this stream, the other Perfect Collaboration: Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan. Cornell's voice left this atmosphere long before Bezos or Branson
I Thought Mad Season was before AOC and Pearl Jam. The Drummer and Bass player have always been in Screaming Trees. Mad Season was their side project.
Artificial red, smoke, poison consumed, in the house of ill repute…
Cornell was a rarety, he was blessed with a 5 octave vocal range.
My favorite of the grung musicians
This is an incredible song by incredible artist.
As always another great reaction.
I have been watching a ton of your reaction vids, you two are awesome!! Keep it up!!!
A true supergroup. One album...and its AWESOME. Check out who that groups members are for that collaboration.
The perfect song for you to do next would be Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean. It's a completely different spin than MJ put on it and, IMO, is better than the original. Brad will love the arrangement and the fact that it's MJ and Chris kills it and Lex will love every freaking thing about it!
The live from Stockholm version!!!
It’s been said: hauntingly beautiful.
Absolutely Amazing reaction! You guys just gave me chills! Thank you!
I didnt even know what i was buying when i got this tape. I was already a fan of pearl jam and soundgarden when i got it. I just got it because i liked the cover. What a pleasant surprise when i found out what this was. Every song on this album is outstanding.
Lex you are exactly right always , lmao. I just came from another video where your analogy blew me away, I love that you don't judge or edit yourself when you speak on these.
Lex is a rocker. she is very spot on in alot of her rock song comments and observations. Shes also just adorable to watch vibin out
This band was members of two groups - Mother Love Bone and Soundgarden, who wrote a tribute album a dear friend who died of a heroin overdose. Andrew Wood was his name, lead singer of Mother Love Bone, and best friend/roommate of Chris Cornell.
A guy named Ed Vedder came up to Seattle from the bay area in CA, to try out for bands. He joined them on this album, and after this album's sessions, the guys from MLB and Eddie recruited a couple more people and became Pearl Jam.
Funny thing, by Pearl Jam's fourth album, the old drummer from Soundgarden had joined Pearl Jam, so everyone in Pearl Jam was the old band Mother Love Bone. Cornell showed up at a few of their concerts to sing this song with them and it was beautiful.
Chris's voice was pure beauty and a loss
. In his own words, "No one sings like you, anymore".
Love watching y’all react to my old grunge favorites. I was the gen x kid with the band t shirt, flannel shirt around the waist, and tattered jeans. This brings me back.
I used to hang out at the spot they filmed this. Legendary times. RIP Chris
Great reaction!! You two are really good together.
Call me a dog is another excellent tune from them and throw in Reach Down.
Yes! Definitely
Definitely Reach Down, whole album rules though.
Congrats guys! You are almost at 100k subs!! You guys rock. Keep up the great work you guys are doing..
2 of the best voices ever. R.I.P. Chris.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS SONG! It's always been a favorite
You guys are awesomely genuine!
Temple of the Dog would be a great album reaction for you two. Pure gold from start to finish🤘
Introspective. I think that's the word. I totally feel you there. I think you're exactly right but I never realized it until you said it.
80's hair rock lots of feelings projected but only on the surface. 90's grunge : the feelings are internalized but they're so raw and so much that they ooze to the outside in every note.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching you find new music Lex!!! Your facial expressions of how you can really get the music. You are great at describing. Yes Eddie has the grungy growl and Chris had a voice that had so many layers.
Chris Cornell-be yourself is so classic.
Love u guys!!!!.....Lex you nailed the change in genres PERFECTLY!
I always fall down a rabbit hole when. Watching your reactions there’s always a song I see and god I have to watch and listen with you. Before I know it hours have passed.
Two of the most amazing voices of any generation, together, in the one song. How can this be better?
Five magics by megadeth PLEASE
only original version :D ❤️🇬🇧
Take no prisoners!!!
Meh, the underground in american
Great song
All 3 of those songs has to be done 🙌🏻🙌🏻
@4:25 Lex brings the comparison to 80's rock vs 90's grunge perfectly, we just need to translate it into a paragraph & the world will understand. Love you Lex & your enthusiasm :)
Chris Cornell, in my humble opinion, was the best rock talent of a generation. If not beyond. His vocal range, ability to MAKE you feel emotion, great song-writer, and ability to make many different styles seem his own. Not to mention not a bad guitar player and even started out on the drums. He is still greatly missed. RIP.
Aw yes! To grow up in Seattle in the late 80's and 90's was a magical time!
I wish they where both still together. No telling how amazing it would have been. ❤️
6:10 Eddie coming thru with the windmill…… Gangsta….. 🔥🔥🔥
I'm glad you did this one. It's one of my favorites.
Lex is awesome. She gets it.
Cornell will go down in history as one of the greatest belters in modern music.
Love you guys! Thank you!
this song is amazing Chris and Eddie
The energy wthin ...you're absolutely right
Lex's first impressions are usually pretty spot on. Good rock instincts.
God Bless Chris. He was doing good works for the world. They got him. RIP.
Temple Of The Dog was started as a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood who passed away from a heroin od. Wood & Soundgarden singer, guitarist Chris Cornell were close. The name Temple of the Dog is a reference to lyrics of the Mother Love Bone song Man of Golden Words. Temple Of The Dog featured Chris Cornell along with Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron (Cameron joined Pearl Jam in I think 1998), & Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard & Mother Love Bone bassist Jeff Ament (Gossard & Ament were previously in Green River prior to Mother Love Bone), would be Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. Eddie Vedder was auditioning for Pearl Jam while Temple Of The Dog were rehearsing. Cornell was struggling with singing the parts that Vedder sang. Cornell was struggling, Vedder stepped in and nailed it. Temple Of The Dog released this album in 1991, then Pearl Jam released their 1st album Ten a few months later, and Soundgarden released their 3rd album Badmotorfinger a month or 2 later.
I just discovered your channel but I Love Lex. She gets it. She is on point with the music and she feels the music for what it is meant to be.
As someone else in the comments pointed out, Eddie uses a "yarl" technique. Lex actually emulated it pretty well. It's very guttural and comes from the back of the throat, giving it a heavy sound like he's singing through water.
"He took us to church on that." -- Lex
Perfect response.
Please do Candlebox "Far Behind" written about Andrew Wood, lead singer of the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of an heroin-overdose in 1990. Other songs inspired by his death are "Would" by Alice in Chains, "Hey Mr. Lovedog" by Faster Pussycat, and the whole Temple Of The Dog project.
Want to hear Chris's range? Listen to "Beyond the Wheel" 1990 live version.
Also "Slaves and Bulldozers". (recorded version).
Some history of how Temple of the Dog came about.
Andrew Wood singer of the band Mother love bone died of an overdose. Chris Cornell was his best friend and former roommate. Bassit Jeff Amett and gutairist stone Stone Gossard where members of Mother love bone. Some time after Andrew Wood passed Jeff and Stone started trying to start a new band, a friend from California(former Red hot chili peppers drummer Jack Irons, whom they asked to be the drummer but he turned them down at the time. He would join them for a time later) passed demo tapes between his friend Eddie Vedder who was living in San Diego and Amett. They invited Eddie up to Seattle and eventually formed a band initially called Mookie Blaylock(after a member of the NBA's Seattle Supersonics) which later changed to Pearl Jam.
Before Eddie came up to California Chris approached Jeff and Stone with a bunch of songs he had written in grief over Andrews death and with Soundgarden. With Soundgardens drummer Matt Cameron and Forwards childhood Friend Mike Mcready joining in. Eddie came up to Seattle while this was going on and he actually only guests on a few songs as a backing vocalist on the songs Pushin forward back, your savior, and four walled world and share lead vocals on hunger strike.
Eddie, Stone, Jeff, and Mike would hit it off and with drummer Dave Krussen would form Mookie Blaylock which would later be renamed Pearl Jam.
Pearl jam was like fictional band spinal tap for a while they went through 4 drummers(including Jack Irons) in the 1990's before Matt Cameron joined them after Soundgarden split up in 1998.
