I've always wondered that did they share rhythm guitar parts on the studio albums? I think Cornell wrote most of the riffs or am I wrong? A nice touch that while the song is heavy and doomy Kim's lead is in major scale.

@@petrilampelafrom what I understand, everybody wrote riffs and bass lines (yes, even Matt Cameron), but Cornell was the main composer (and most likely the reason they used so many weird tunings).

Came to say the same. I don't know if it's who I surround myself with, or what - but I don't hear much love for Kim Thayil. I think the thing with him is that he very rarely grabs for the cliche. Like Judson was saying, he makes a sound familiar enough that you're comfortable with it to the point of thinking you know where he's going... then he doesn't. And his choices in tone... anyway. One of my favorite guitarists. Next time, let's talk about Matt Cameron...

    - not begging for likes
    - not pausing the song
    - choosing good songs, not just hits
    - real discussion that can go anywhere
    - great intros by Judson
I've been turned on to several bands i didnt know of, I love both of your taste in music, love your humor and realness, and love your moms.. I never miss a video

It's the subtleties in guitar and bass lines that make this song, with Chris's warm vocals mixed in with a slow deathly beat that makes this thing such an amazing oddball of a song. I can't get enough of it. It's other worldly. They must have been tripping when they came up with this, it's so offbeat and beautiful at the same time. I've never heard anything like it.

I love that you found this gem! First I will say that the 2nd half of the superunknown album is like Chris was talking to me. Love all those songs. Second, guitar solos could have been Chris or Kim. And I don't know well enough to know usually when that happens. When Kim goes off, then it's obvious as Kim as a unique expression. And last, Rick Beato interviewed Michael Beinhorn who produced superunkown. That was an interesting interview and definitely shed a lot of light on that process. Thank you for this!

    Judson ❤ Kim 4ever.
What a lovely surprise of song choice! There are few songs as downright sludgy as this one and I'm not surprised it caught your ear. This album has so many great songs and my least favourite without doubt is Black Hole Sun haha!
The thing with Soundgarden's song writing is that they wrote the music that they wanted to and (for the most part) it didn't matter whether the audience liked it. That's why it's almost impossible to characterise them and why some of their stuff is just plain weird.
I'm not going to recommend a next track to listen to (although Like Suicide touches places most other songs can't), but I would recommend that you listen to all of Badmotorfinger and Superunknown several times just for the sheer joy of exploring this most excellent musical force. Then explore everything else they've done. It's all good, but you gotta start somewhere!

Now im in control, now I'm in the fall-out,

  • @GregMcNeish

This song blew my mind the first time I heard it in about 2002, and it still just melts me every time I hear it. Cornell is one of my biggest influences as a songwriter, and this one's a masterpiece. Loved what you guys said about Kim Thayil, too. To me there was always something angular or a little eschew about his soloing, in all the best ways. He's always coming in with a rhythm that is just a bit off from what the band is playing, or with strange note choices that - on paper - SHOULDN'T work, but with him it always does. It's like he's the only one who can see that there's an optical illusion, so he's able to break the rules in a way that nobody else could.
For a song that scratches the same kind of musical itch as this song, I'd recommend "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" from the Badmotorfinger album (1991). For a less-riffy song that taps into the same vibe, I'd recommend the album closer from Superunknown, "Like Suicide". To my mind, that was the greatest song Cornell ever wrote.

It's so nice when someone understands Soundgarden and why they truly are amazing. Like Suicide has my favorite Kim Thayil guitar solo. He doesn't really play "solos" like other guitar players. I remember him calling his playing coloring. (Or something like that.) If you listen to Like Suicide, just know the song is about a bird that flew into his window, which you can't tell from the song unless you know. Check out that solo though, it's glorious!

You should know that Chris wrote 4th of July entirely. At least that's what vinyl's booklet says @@Greatmeasures

I love this song. I think Room a thousand years wide from Badmotorfinger is the for bearer of this song. Similar placement on the album too. Keep up the good work.

Could've also been visuals from street and car lights looking like 4tth of July.
If you haven't checked out The Pretty Reckless the song Only Love Can Save Me Now is a deep song and video that features Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden not to long after Chris died. Lead singer writer Taylor Momsen looked up to Chris and was possibly the last person to talk to him. You guys would definitely love the song.

The thing is with Soundgarden is that they were so prolific because everyone in the band was a songwriter so they didn’t have a fixed sound every song sounded different from any other but of course had the same dna of the members of the band that you could tell it was Soundgarden

All of their songs sound Soundgarden, no matter who was the one who put more into each one. Because they only went with the ones thay they worked as a band, together, until they all liked it. Got to love that.

I think you're right about that CREAM tone or style there. Good one 👍 Your guys banter and talk is good. These guys play together like Zeppelin, not so much in their technicality but definitely chemistry wise...great band....

Jeez, guys. I was a Pearl Jam kid too but how could you not branch out into Soundgarden back then? 😆 This was the first CD I ever bought. You're right though, this song does hold up very well for being as old as it is. Have you guys ever checked out Badmotorfinger? Some great stuff on there as well.
