    Great solution for getting portholes to secure the "right way" round. I am going to follow your lead but have will also add the black screw tops back to the outside by using an M10 bolt and shaving down the black plastic lugs to recess the bolt head (thus making "false" looking screw locks on outside). In this way the aesthetics of the outside porthole are fully retained. Keep up the great work!

    I was just about to cut a hole in my van to fit one... thought I’d check UA-cam. And wow! Great solution. Parts ordered. Thanks for the video. 👍

    Well done, Your a clever wee cookie ain't ya 😉 I think Marie and Ash were looking to modify Marie's port holes but I dont know if they ever did it 🤔

      Cheers 😊 I got the idea from them I saw it in his story. But that was when they added the second one. But they never did the first, so she has one with and the other without👍

    Good job Max 👍 I have some catching up to do, I've been having a little break with vanlife channels in general lol. Hey, you could use vise grips and put a bit of a bend in each side of those clasp arms to make them form better to the down pull, it would be stronger and better looking than washers to raise them up 👍

      That’s a good idea 👍 cheers 👌

      @@RustyRoseAdventures 🙂👍☘ Remember to put some tape around the grips first so as not to damage the chrome on the clasps 🙂

    Hiya Mat, you've found a good solution, but did you know that they're meant to be fitted with the locking screw things, on the inside? That way you don't have to run outside to tighten them shut. That's also why the drain slot has ended up on the inside of your van.. That said, I actually prefer the look of them, the way you've fitted them, in your follow up fitting video..lol
    Cheers for the vids btw.. 👍

      Thanks, yeah but seems a bit of a daft idea as it is on a slanted van wall so if it rains it will collect and then you will undo the porthole and water would come in, also this way I can have them open while it is raining. Glad you liked it!

      Hey! @@RustyRoseAdventures I have one to fit in my van, back door, if that's level, reckon I can mount it the opposite of yours? So they don't need moded? Making my head hurt trying to figure this out, waiting until the weather is better before I brave it and cut a hole in my door! Cheers dude!

    • @RustyRoseAdventures
      @RustyRoseAdventures  3 роки тому

      Yes you can it’s how they’re meant to be but I think one it looks weird and 2 it is slower to open and my way you can have it open for ventilation even if it’s raining 👍

      @@RustyRoseAdventures Ok..you've sold me on it. I'll order myself some clips. Thanks again.

      Ordered my portholes on 7th Feb, arrived 10th..well astounded 😁👍
      I've thought of another advantage to fitting the opening side, outside the van...come Winter time, you can make an insulated insert to place into the tube part of the frame, making it less of a heat soak.. 😉👍

  • @LillaHusVanlife

    Modified one porthole now and ran into a problem with the seal, Mat..
    When it's clamped up, there's still daylight on each side, around the same areas as the outside screws..
    They're the same portholes as you have, going by the boxes, too..
    I may have to think of another way of making this work so they still open outwards, but seal properly.. 🤔

    • @RustyRoseAdventures
      @RustyRoseAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      I drilled the holes back a bit so it was tighter but some of them have daylight but they don’t leak so all good. Also a tip from ash is sand the tabs off so no one could pull it👍😊

    • @LillaHusVanlife
      @LillaHusVanlife 3 роки тому +1

      @@RustyRoseAdventures My wife suggested adding some softer seal, maybe neoprene foam, around the daylight areas.. 🤔 I was looking at those tabs and thinking of cutting them off, too..it'll make the whole thing neater to the eye.. cheers Mat.. 👍

    Does in not just drain water into the van like that?

  • @petestan

    Are you installing these inside out? Don’t the twistable catches go on the inside?

    • @RustyRoseAdventures
      @RustyRoseAdventures  Рік тому

      Yes I am, That is why the video is called "modifying portholes"

    • @petestan
      @petestan Рік тому +1

      @@RustyRoseAdventures but… but why don’t you just install them the other way around and call the video, “simple installation, no modifications required”?

    • @RustyRoseAdventures
      @RustyRoseAdventures  Рік тому

      @@petestan Because 1 I think they look better the "wrong" way round and 2 it means you can have them open in the rain and 3 it's easier to flick the catch than to twist the knobs
