In a little more than 5 years later they were all promoted (3 generations) to 1st Dan. That was a rare occurrence in Canada, my native country, and the very first in our province of Newfoundland with only 540,000 people. It was a very celebratory event for my Dojo as well as the whole association. The grandfather started at 61 and received his Black Belt at 67.

that was a fun video! special effects were great. When I was in Aikido we had to tie the knot so that the part of the belt on the top of knot would be left over right same as the gi jacket. I did a face palm when you showed moving the string ties to the side. You would think after so many years I would have figured that out. The comment below on showing how to fold a gi reminded me of learing to fold a Hakama in Aikido.
It took me 13 years to learn to tie my knots at the side too 😅 I always took great pride in being asked to fold my Aikido sensei's hakama - such a meditative task. Unfortunately I never got advanced enough to wear my own (I left the style at 3rd kyu after training for 6 years and hitting a ceiling) but hakama are magnificent. I've never stopped missing the style - I wish I could find morning classes somewhere to train it, because evenings are out. Ah well. Always love to read your comments 🌺

Hi I have managed to successfully tie both methods in the video but for some reason cannot get the length to be equal. One end is fat longer than the other
Hello! Before you start tying the knots, once you have looped the belt behind the first belt (where it touches the gi), this is when you adjust the lengths again before you tie the knot. So try shimmy it along and match the ends before you tie the knot. It usually gets uneven when we wrap it around :) Hope this helps! Thank you so much for watching :D

Ok, and I talk as a person who learnt how to dress as a karate-ka at the age of 7, and I am now 42.. there is no simple and fancy knot, there is only the first knot you did, only with experience of doing that knot well you learn how to do it neatly, with no need for flamboyance to make it look right/good. Please do not make shit up to try to make it look neat/good, it happens naturally with experience with the "basic" knot... look at any of the true masters' knots. Do not print Adidas/Nike/Guci onto my belt to make it look more attractive. Oh, and with a well tied gi and "basic" knot on my bnelt, I too have participated in randori with no issues... perhaps the odd gi top has pulled loose (without the bow tie shit, just a basic double knot) but ye know, no one I trained with cared about that. This is one of my gripes about millenial kara te. Kasa did not feel a need to improve his belt knot, so why do you?
Ah, they're not that bad - I can still run and train 🤷🏻♀️ unfortunately I got a bad draw in the feet department, but it's much better than when I started. If it's something you have any tips for, I'd love to hear them. But thank you for watching in spite of my flat feet!

Haha but yeah I trained in Sicily where I was born I goju ryu then NYC and now I am in Japan . I am a black belt first dan. - my friend I train with also has flat feet and she’s in constant pain staying in the balls of her feet and it’s a constant battle
Ah, no problem! We really do try to reply to every comment, since people take the time to watch and comment! When I buy running shoes, I have to buy the pronated ones, which are always so thick and heavy. My husband gets to wear the neutral gait, but he also has excellent, strong feet (genetics!) So jealous that you are training in Japan! We are planning to visit Japan and Okinawa next year, all going well - big highlight of our year. Solidarity with your flat-footed friend 👊🏻
