  • Time for a new series. This time one I'm calling "That Awkward Age".
For me, when I think of age stated, entry level whisky...I think 10 and 12 year olds. Then you generally step up to 16, 18, 21yr old etc. So this is a series and opportunity for me to look at those age stated whiskies in between. 3, 5, 9, etc. Oddly aged whiskies which, either work...or don't. We shall see as the series progresses.
It runs in no particular order and we're starting with a 14yr old. Clynelish 14yr old to be precise. Watch my review to see what I thought of this NE Coast Highland expression.
    Enjoy.

hmm.... I thought you 've had Roy in one of your openings. Very strange indeed that he sneaked in. What follows is a thing we get used to: a great review. Thanks Jim!

U have no idea how long it took me to get that worm hole to work properly. The things one ends up with when you’re pretty much blind stealing stuff when u don’t know who or what’s on the other side...thanks for the dram in any case, Clynelish is indeed a staple in my cabinet as it’s just such a rewarding, lovely whisky. Never had that dalwhinnie, but quite enjoy their 15 as an easy sipper, so a surprising shout out. Cracking review mr. novice. Btw, the new logo: 👍👌. Cheers Jim

😄😄 cheers Menno. I'll call off the investigation.
Yeah that Dalwhinnie was surprisingly nice. Very easy drinker.

Haha good one, Menno! At first... (before continuing with the second sentence) I interpreted your first sentence like you had helped Jim creating the visuals for the video... 😂

Oh, you have to tell me how to get a worm hole like that! We across the pond do need a good way to grab some of the abundant offerings you can get so easily in the UK. Just think how we could swap samples and bottles! Great review of a great dram. My son was pressing me for my short list of favorites and this one makes my list. I like it neat, but I totally agree a wee bit of water brightens it up. I always enjoy this dram and think of it as a classic representative of Scotch whisky. Speaking of classics-- I predict that new logo will become a classic of world wide whisky lovers. Nicely done all around, Jim.

🙏 thank you Bud. Yeah that Clynelish is a consistant gem. And yes totally agree....worm holes would make modern life soooo much easier 😄.
      Cheers my friend.

Interesting - I keep saying that my Dalwhinnie 15 is like a friendly Clynelish!

Great description of such a lovely dram, and a staple in my whisky „wardrobe“ and really shows your very relaxed attitude to wormholes and life in general ;)

It would take more than a wormhole to scare me 😄😄.

Perfect review...been saving this for many months and drinking the neck-pour with your spot-onn tasting was cool. Here in the US I grabbed this for about $55 and don't see it anymore.
Bright and floral and distinctive development and finish ...YES
Waxy..not as noticable as I was expecting, but y'all had me expecting a melted candle on the tounge.
    Water.. Yes
Diageo...color...I'll try to be mature and not an anti-industrial activist. But a man's gotta have principles to the craft.? Doesn't he?
At the start of this journey I picked up a Machir Bay gift box and shared that at a party...blew our Margarita minds. After we coughed up the smoke, An unemployed restaurantuer friend-of-a-friend expert-of-all-things suggested that Dalwhinnie 15 was the only Scotch you need. Yet to try it. $70 seems like alot, but someday perhaps in a bar I'll order a dram.
I'll keep an eye out for your Winter Gold

I love this one, and it has a cat on it, so extta points. If i had to pick a whisky that kinda is like this one, i think the JW Green Label.

Cheers for the review Jim. I have never added water to my Clynelish and I don’t know why! So excited to try that out to see what it is like. Will maybe try it alongside rewatching this video to compare notes

Great start to a new series. I also enjoyed the "if you liked this ..." Certainly keeps it clearer and focused on the bottle at hand. The waxy nature of Clynelish 14 is an accident? Yikes, I certainly enjoy that component. Thanks for sharing.

Spot on with this one, Jim! Great review. One of my favourite standard malts, and thanks to Diageo for bottling it at 46%. I didn't know about the waxiness in Winter's Gold. Gotta try it. I am sorry but I follow 30 whiskytubers and I don't have time to watch everything but I was reminded by Roy about your channel again at a vPub and a few weeks ago I was flying abroad (don't tell anyone) and for the flight I downloaded three of your episodes. Excellent work my friend, great production and very cool intros! Cheers! 👏🏼👊🏻

A fine beginning to the Awkward Age series Jim. Thumbs up for the new logo and for the "If you liked this...". I like the Clynelish with water too, and I like Dalwhinnie 15. I haven't seen the Winter's Gold on this side of the water. Cheers to you and thanks for the video.

Nice review. Perfume and flowers is right! Clynelish 14 is a bottle I tend to enjoy. For another odd age statement whisky, I really enjoy craigellachie 13 for what’s its worth. Decent price and pretty tasty... from my experiences.

Like the new logo Jim. Neat intro and a good review of a solid core range whisky . Cannot grumble at diageo for putting out this whisky at 14 yrs and at 46 % and its still around €40 .It's good stuff. Cheers Jim.

I see your well of into-ideas has not run completely dry yet. :)
Clynelish 14 is an alltime favourite of mine for sure, actually I pick up every Clynelish version that is offered at a reasonable price and have not been disappointed yet.
Love the idea of "if you liked this, try that", this will be copied by other reviewers I predict (or hope). My pick in that department would have been Old Pulteney 15 - I have always felt some kind of kindred between these two distilleries.
Cheers man, keep the awkward stuff coming! :)

Few intros in the bank yet 😁
Never had the OP 15 but hear great things about it. I was actually surprised to sit down and find a few whiskies which felt a bit like this Clynelish. It's good to have options.
      Cheers man.

Nice video, Jim, and another crazy find for the intro, what an imagination, lol ! (& as an old SCIFI reader/viewer I can appreciate it even more). About Clynelish, John Glaser's favorite Scottish distillery, btw, lots of things to say...I like this expression & many more (I've checked I tried 39 ones so far), me I'll just mention that there is also some Special Releases of it from time to time & a distillery exclusive nas, and a few other special bottlings & some wonderful indie bottlings on a regular basis....and of course the sister distillery, BRORA, which was closed but reopened last year...but for your subscribers who don't know much this distillery, here is a good read I think : www.malt-whisky-madness.com/maltmadness/whisky/clynelish.html
    Cheers, my friend !
