The Japanese Tyrion cover is mesmerizing, but I think people's problem with it is that he looks like a baby!!

Yeah, I think it’s a really cool artwork, but what throws me is the grey skin tone. It makes Tyrion look more like a fantasy creature/alien baby, when he’s supposed to be just a weird looking human man. Having a babyish look doesn’t really fit Tyrion’s personality, either.
Also, this is one of the few depictions I’ve seen that have his right eye as the black one, which is interesting!

In Japan, ASOIAF switched translators at A Feast for Crows, which is kinda where the different cover art comes from. Initially, the hardcover releases (usually divided into 2~3 books, since you can fit less text on a page than English in Japanese) and the soft cover pocket book (bunko) releasees (usually divided into about 5 books, due to even less text fitting on 1 page) had different cover art, which is the sprawling covers (hardcover)and the framed covers (softcover). Presumably the softcover versions didn't sell too well, and they were discontinued after A Clash of Kings (or, A Storm of Swords didn't sell enough to merit a softcover version). When A Feast for Crows comes along, the translator switches to a different guy, and he made a lot of changes to the names and lingo (basically made them a lot more edgy). Then, during the time while the new guy is translating A Dance with Dragons, the show happens, blows up, and suddenly there's a much bigger demand for the source material (of which most had gone out of print). So, they re-release all the books in softcover pocket books style with the updated edgy lingo, but this time they ,make them big fat chunky books for people with humongous pockets, and released them with the hardcover version cover art. So, no more covers with the frames. They aren't even in circulation.
So, that picture of Ned definitely predates the show. Actually, the only covers that came after the show started would be the two A Dance with Dragons covers.

The 3:16:52 cover it's just the "deluxe" hardcover version of the previous Corominas one and the sleeve it's actually just a translucent onionskin paper with all the lettering so that you can pull it away and then it has the full artwork without any titles or anything. I like the Hodor representation in that Japanese cover. By the cave time in the story, after being mind-invadedly warged by Bran over and over, Hodor is probably just a shell of a human. He wasn't quite much of a person to begin with. By now he's just a tragic soul-ravaged transport slave. If he ever was a sweet boy, that innocence was chewed up and ground into oblivion long ago. He's a mindless automaton vessel, now. That's all.

As a Finn I must comment. I loved the covers on the Finnish editions for their style. I read the first novel in Finnish first but then read the rest in English, as the English edition was more easily available. I loved the covers though...
That having been said, the Finnish edition is quite amateurishly translated, misunderstanding and mangling many frases so that the parallels between things like certain characters become obtuse or undecipherable. There's also some weird translations that persist in translations of other works set in the same Universe (like the HBO show). Like "Hand of the King" isn't translated with the normal word for hand, which would be appropriate, but rather with another word that means "grasper, groper", when referring to the hand. The strange part is Finnish has the same idiom from which the position on the council is derived, i.e. my right hand as in someone who is very helpful to me and in a close position to me. So why use this very uncouth language to translate which takes the reader away from the quite plain and simple meaning of the phrase is anybody's guess.
Tyrion's sobriquet of "imp" is also translated into a word that means troll or goblin. Although roughly correct, it refers only to his ugliness in the Finnish, and perhaps his mischieviousness, but does not quite grasp at the most obvious insult of Tyrion being considered quite the unnatural and evil creature, that the word imp obviously carries. Although perhaps on accident the translation becomes more appropriate in Clash of Kings when Tyrion abducts Tommen, as Finnish trolls are known for capturing children from their mothers. A bit of unintended irony there.

Some of the generic art the 2:30 mark actually was used for for a series of novels about Irish mythology. The one with the dude on a horse holding a sword is from a book called RIders of the Sidhe by Kenneth C Flint. It's a very good series and I think I still have it somewhere. I'm not sure about the one with the shirtless blond dude but I think it's a cover for a book about Cuchulainn, another legendary Irish hero. In both cases the male protagonists are blond dudes so the covers were appropriate. These books were published in the 80s so the artwork was prolly forgotten by most people but not my nerdy self. The other pictures I don't recognize.

I'm a bit late to this but I'd just like to say that the Taiwanese Clash of Kings cover at 1:12:25 is definitely reused artwork. The dragon is by Boris Vallejo and was used on the cover of The Dragon and the George by Gordon R Dickinson, which was published in 1976. Though the art is edited, the dragon in the original art is half covered by a knight so it's arms aren't visible, and there's no girl with a spear on that artwork too.
Edit: The second Taiwanese Clash of Kings cover also has an edited piece of art. The dragon's head looks to be copied from Keith Parkinson's piece called Ice Dragon, though the rest of the cover doesn't appear to be by him.

People still think knot designs are celtic? The celts never used knot designs, the knot designs that people keep calling celtic are 100% scandinavian. The anglos and vikings brought that to England. The only reason why people ever called it celtic is because irish monks used to draw it in some scriptures, and it was eventually carved on some crosses too. But that sort of artwork has no history on the british isles or on the continent in general. But we can follow it's development from the Vendel period to the different levels of development like the Oseberg style, the Ringerike style, and the latest Urnes style. Those are viking styles, not celtic. The next time you see northern european knot artwork you'll know that it's not celtic, it's viking.
Celtic artstyles are more about symmetry. Lots of symmetrical circles and stuff like that. It's what you see on the barrows in Ireland and stuff. But if you're to see knot work then you must look at stuff like the norwegian stave churches or viking age ornamentation.

2:28:30 as a huge Witcher fan, allow me to present a nifty little alternative. if you don't have the time to go through an entire book series and/or hundreds of hours of just the last game, let alone entire game trilogy, consider checking out Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
it's a unique game, essentially a spinoff to the trilogy, that expands on minor events from the books. it has a charming art style and combat entirely replaced by card matches and puzzles, but its strongest aspect is definitely the story and the way it is written. lots of ole 'choices have consequences', wartime as a backdrop, and different viewpoints on parent-child relationships. which, i think, you guys would enjoy!

    Okay, wild theory here...
I'd hazard a guess that for some of these covers, they were painted in larger landscape resolution and the publishers zoomed in and cropped them to fit the portrait view of a book cover.
You can see that's exactly what they did for the Book #1 cover with Jon at 1:03:09 . It's the same cover as the previous one, but it was zoomed in and cropped to fit the entire height of the book (to what end, I don't know). And probably the later book covers were done the same. Though with..... middling results.
I have no evidence for this other than #1 I am an artist and #2 I can't fathom some of these compositions.

Coming back to this video, I am thinking of the illustrations of the characters, particularly that mutant baby Tyrion. People have a big idea in their heads about certain characters and how they are supposed to look. Particularly if they have watched the show.
But that weird baby mutant Tyrion is way more accurate to the books than Peter Dinklage's performance and appearance ever was. But some people's imagination will not let the book's descriptions override their preconception of what a character is "supposed" to be like.
The same goes with Lord of the Rings. People's minds would be blown if they learned that Boromir and Faramir should have black hair and no beards, same with Aragorn, and that Sauron's body was not actually an eye, it was just symbolism and that Legolas' hair was actually black, not blonde.
It's fun to try to overcome these prejudices.
