Happy to report that the pizza tastes exactly the same, and now the service is friendlier than w/ the previous owners. The new owners not only bought the restaurant but the rights to the pizza recipes, and last time I went in. The old owner brought his family in for dinner as well!
I'v tried Sally Apizza, Frank Pepe Pizza, Zeneli pizza and Modern Pizza. Sally Apizza is my favorite pizza. There dough, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese are great. On Frank Pepe's pizza when i got the pie, i noticed right away, there's was enough pizza sauce on it. So i ate half the pie and then i ordered a small pie, this time with extra pizza sauce. When they put extra pizza sauce on, then it was a perfect ratio of pizza sauce to mozzarella cheese. I would tell this to people, if you go to Frank Pepe in New Haven, get it with extra pizza sauce. I love the pizza sauce and dough Frank Pepe's makes. My only problem was the mozzarella cheese. I didn't like the mozzarella cheese on the Frank Pepe pizza. It was a creamy type mozzarella cheese i didn't like. This to me this is the big difference between Sally Apizza and Frank Pepe's pizza. The mozarella cheese i like better at Sally Apizza. When i tried Modern pizza, i didn't like it. The dough tasted like Whole wheat and i thought the pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese were ok tasting. Zenili pizza is on the same block as Sally Apizza and Frank Pepe's pizza. I got the Margherita pizza at Zeneli. It was only 10 bucks. I thought it was very good. The dough and mozzarella cheese are really good. The mozzarella cheese Zeneli uses, i liked it much better than the mozzarella cheese Frank Pepe uses. Now the pizza sauce on the Margherita pizza Zeneli makes, it uses san marzano tomatoes. To me this tasted like Marinara sauce. Zeneli also make other pizza's that use a tomato sauce instead of the san marzano tomatoes. Next time i go to Zeneli's i'll get the Margherita pizza, but this time i'll get it with the pizza sauce instead of the san marzano tomatoes sauce and i'll see which one i like better. I'v also heard good things about Zuppardi's apizza and Ernie's Pizza in New Haven. Next time i'm in New Haven, i'll try those pizzas.
No it doesnt. I had it 15 years ago and most recently 6 months ago. They now used canned tomatoes from a certain corporate vendor thats not as good as the canned tomatoes they used to use. Also yu cant eat inside the pizzeria anymore. You have to eat inside a giant barbecue joint looking barn. Americanized grandkids ruined it. Also sallys is working on chaining out like pepes did. We have a chain pepes in my town and this is how sad it is. There are 2 local mom and pop joints that are considered the best in my town. Pepes doesnt even get mentioned in the conversation. Thats just insane to me.
@@danlivni2097 Zennelis isnt a-pizza though. Its neopolitan style. Its a different beast so you cant categorize it into the a-pizza joints. That said it is good but a different good. Also you are right about the cheese. Its so good because they make thier own. Pepes is garbage as all their ingredients are from a corporation. Sallys is about to follow suit unfortunately. The americanized grand kids have screwed it all up
