I pronounce it "Wun-tee-tee" because I enjoy making people angry. Thank you for this video. People take pronunciation personally!
Ngl it started doing this too about a year back
but the town isnt called "one titty"
I pronounce it "One-Tee" Because its fun to say
I freaking hate you both
what the frick.
if you mispronouncing sii-va gunner was intentional then this might be your best video ending yet
Pretty sure it was intentional
Huh, that was a mispronounciation?
@@Morgil27 the original channel was called siivagunner, the new one is SiIvagunner (capital I)
I always sounded it in my mind as "On-it" - like, Ness is "on it" or ready to go on his adventure.
Me too!
SAME SAME!
i just like the sound of it :>
Same here
I pronounce it onett
Very helpful thanks
Same
You fool.
me too
No!!!!! It's pronounced "Twoson"
END OF DISCUSSION!
ive been saying oh-nett my entire life and i had never even considered another pronunciation existing
Having someone make a video on how to pronounce a single word really says something about this community.
And I love it.
I do like your interpretation of the "Oh-net" pronunciation and will be adopting it as my headcanon; although for people who want to pronounce it "On-et", I came up with an interpretation that it's because it's the place where Ness accepts his mission to save the world from Giygas. ("I'm *on it* !")
My thought is that the single n implies a long “oh” sound and the double t STRONGLY implies an accented “ett” so I would disagree with the idea of the “onnit” pronunciation being the most phonetic. That said, English hates its own rules so.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Your channel is very underrated, but I know it will grow. Keep making good content like this, and I'm sure you'll develop a bigger following.
More evidence towards oh-net would be that onett is in the north western corner of eagle land (this is proved by the official earthbound world map.) Since eagle land represents america, the first people to colonize this area were the spanish. And if you put 'onett' in spanish in google translate, it says oh-net. But for some reason I will still say on-it
Oh, neat! A video about the pronunciation of Onett! I've always wunted one on it!
Great video!! I really enjoy all your videos. I pronounce it “Own-ett” because that’s how I’ve always pronounced it. Although I get why people would say “One-tt” like the number. The history lesson was great!!
7:00
He makes an entire video about the correct pronunciation of a word, concludes the video by talking about how important correct pronunciation is, and then says _Silvagunner_ instead of _Siivagunner_
Smh my head
Almost like it was intentional... >:)
@@MonkeyNess
Oh my gosh you genius
Also while I have u here this was an awesome video which I enjoyed watching at 3 am
Wow, so much potential lore behind a simple pronounceiation.
I'm still gonna say "oh-net" though.
Was not expecting the history lesson at the end, caught me entirely off-guard. Good video (but I'm still gonna say "one-et").
imma just call it 'funny smash town' from now on fuck it
0:42 Ayy!
Also, side note, when you look at the signs in the town by the northern side, the one saying “Onett town” and the one saying “Onett” the letters highlighted are “one on one”. Why does that matter?
It doesn’t.
Congrats lol
I have to be completely honest; I think the “numbered towns” scheme was mainly conceived of as a written-language thing rather than a phonetic one, since the game’s writing is delivered as text rather than voice acting. How you actually PRONOUNCE each name is way less important than the fact that, when written, it contains its corresponding number, since what a player will experience when playing the game is that written name rather than someone speaking it aloud.
Growing up in Canada and taking French in school, I always called it Oh-Nette (with a french accent)
Since I played this game for the first time about two months ago, I wasn’t aware that there was a controversy. Well, I can say for sure that I definitely pronounce it Onett!
Personally, my mind gravitates towards “On-eht” it makes the most sense to me and sounds the most pleasing (also very American sounding given the Eagleland setting)
Onett is just the the Hydrocity of the Mother fandom (also it’s been confirmed that it’s pronounced Hydro city, not hydrossity)
Hydrussy
ah sweet new worst way to say it dropped time to use that exclusively
I keep messing that up :’)
art is only how one interprets it yada yada hydro city sounds awful, hydrossity is the only good pronunciation
Metro City
I usually pronounce it Onett
Yes, he did Rick roll me at the end. My online career died before it started.
Oh-Knee-Tea
I used to pronounce it "Oh-net", but I now pronounce it "On it".
i pronounce it as oh-net because i like to fish and throw those big nets to acquire dinner
So by your logic, if the number "one" was originally pronounced "own" then the great vowel shift should have changed the pronunciation of Onett from "oh-nett" to "one-ett" as well, keeping the number pronunciation intact?
Great video, you present several good points for discussion.
The opposite, the GVS shifted it from some other pronunciation (possibly ‘On-it’?) to “Oh-net”, as it shifted the pronunciation of “one” to “own”.
I believe when I first saw the name "Onett" when I first read the strategy guide, I pronounced it "On-ett", then when I put together the numbering system of the towns, I figured it might be "One-et" then at some point after that I now say "Oh-nett" and I'm not even sure why that is. Objectively "One-et" would make the most sense due to the numbered cities, but something about the cadence of it doesn't feel right to me. I find your old English theory interesting though, Itoi can be quite clever with details like that.
Also, it blew my mind the first time it was brought to my attention that "ONEtt TWOson THREEd FOURside TENda", I didn't make that connection for the longest time. It begs the question, where are towns five, six, etc. However, after having boned up on the Japanese translation, I read that Tenda Village in the translation is more closely translated as "Gummi Village", so from what I understand the Tenda Village following the number system isn't a Japanese translation decision. However I wonder if that was something that the translators took upon themselves? If so, kudos for sneaking the joke back in so late in the game!
Nice seeing you here, keep making great retro-games content.
I tricked tons of people with that Silvagunner rip, also I pronounce it Onett, no wait that jokes been done before, so I pronounce it Ounehteetey.
I’ve never thought that much about it, I just use both of them and switch when I feel like it
i personally pronounce onett "high-drossity"
too funny 🤣🤣
HYDRO-CITY 👿
AH dang! This video is why you are my fav Earthbound/Mother youtuber (actually one of my favorite UA-camrs in general) Most of these pronunciations I'm literally going off of from when me and my brother used to play SNES as kids, I actually found out a little while ago that I'd been pronouncing Chrono Trigger wrong (I always said Craw-No instead of Crow-No) and actually back when I heard you call it "One" ett I was like "Darnit, my bro and me were bad at pronouncing words correctly as kids lol" but then you did this incredible research and video to bring honor to the Oh-nett community, for which I'm eternally grateful but even more you made me realize, it doesn't matter how you pronounce it, as long as you love it- that's all that matters! P.s. You kinda got me saying "One-ett" now lol talk about a brain swap!!
I call it "On-it" because if I said it the other way that would imply that I would call Hydrocity "Hydro City' Instead of Hydrocity (Like velocity,)
bro i’ve seen that animation like 1billion times and Love it like it’s my first time seeing it
okay that explanation for Oh-net is now my headcanon and i’ll say Onett as Oh-net from now on
I've gone for wun-ett primarily to signal that yes, I do understand that the town names are numbers starting with this one. I've seen quite a few LPs who only catch on to the number scheme by Fourside, and then only notice Twoson and Threed having numbers in them.
I don't maintain that other people are wrong or that I'm right. And now I'm armed with "wunt" as a way to troll people, so thanks!
Oh-nett is more or less how I always said it(can't think of a time I said it differently).
It just sounded the most natural to me language wise.
"Onett" is pronounced as it's written
"Threed" is pronounced as it's written
"Fourside" is pronounced as it's written
"Twoson" is ridiculous because it's based on "Tucson" which is already ridiculous. That's the joke.
I call it One-et. Since the number thing with the first few towns have a number theme to it.
The first time I played EarthBound I read it as oh-net and didn't realize the number scheme until reaching Threed (I figured Twoson was just a pun on Tucson, AZ), then I switched to one-ett which has stuck in my head since
I, for some reason, flip between "on-it" and "oh-net", and while I see where "won-et" would be used, I never not once have pronounced it like that. It feels absolutely foul saying it, too
Bro this is the same debate with Hydro city zone
I was a teen when this game came out, and and we said oh-net, but wunt is my new favorite.
I've always pronounced it as On-it, yeah the numbers on the names didn't really click with me till later in the game.
i never heard anyone pronounce onett before i played earthbound, but when i played the game I've always pronounced it as "oh-net"
I say ah-net bc a long o can be shortened to an ah in and that can turn into the official way to say it. One example is the British pronunciation of herb (hrrb) kids pronounced the H which was only there bc the French added and it was never said in herb.
Actually the spelling indicates that the "ett" should be stressed, not the "on" part. It's own-ETT
That’s what I said…? A stressed second syllable?
Pronunciation arguments are so quaint nowadays- as long as I understand what your talking about there's no reason to get upset. imo the ONEtt TWOson THREEd FOURside naming scheme was most likely haphazardly thrown together to be a consistent naming scheme without much concern for pronunciation. Text based JRPGs did this all the time- with no voice acting, words can be created to look correct when read but actually don't work when spoken audibly. The Oh-net connection you made to the old pronunciation of the word One is probably on accident but I appreciate the research cuz thats how I pronounced it anyway.
Aughnyetet
0:40 MOM IM THERE
I just beat Earthbound for the first time yesterday. When I started the game I got to Twoson and realized "Onett, Twoson, Threed, Fourside." I had never realized before and it me like a ton of bricks.
Own-ett is more fun, but one(1)-ett makes more sense considering the numbering name system of the first few towns.
On-it is just wrong.
i think both "onet" and "want" are good because onet feels natural and Want is literally 1tt, like the rest: you have 2son, 3d/3k (3d? hmm maybe that's why it's ThreeD in particular) and 4side
3:15 best part of the video, just look at ness.
I wasn’t expecting you where gonna pronounce it: OH-net. As I do too. Oh ye and I say twoson like how it looks: so instead of “2 son” I say “twoson”.
I always imagined it rhyming with bonnet
I never put more thought about that.
I'll just say "Ohne-Zwei T" for now on, though. After all one is between null and 2, so that checks.
On-ette
On-it
But.. when you think about it.. two-son or two-saaahn (like tucson az), threed (or threek if you're in Japan), fourside... one two three four... one-ette
I've always pronounced it as Oh-net
It's easier for spanish people (no, we don't call it unott), i think we all just say "O-nett" like a bug net or sum
every time I try to pronounce it, I explode, observe, on- *CCCCCCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHH!!!* (funni guy took mortal damage!)
I’ll forever say “oh-net” because it just sounds better.
If you don't say "Oh-Net" you probably shovel snow with a rake
Jokes on you, i dont have snow
When i first played the game as a kid, I pronounced it as Oh-Net. Then as I got older, I started toying with other pronunciations, but never really settled on any one answer. Nowadays I just don't care.
O-net's my favorite
I always just read it as "Oh-Net."
I felt so confused when you said the big 3 cause i was here like its not "One'tt" given that the others are TWOson THREEd and FOURside, it just makes sense for it to be One (Said as Won-t-t")...But now after reading "Wun-Tee_tee" that clearly is the correct way.
I say it like "wunt", if only to make my friends angry
I pronounce it as On Net because I can't break out of habits.
i pronounce it woah-nett with stress on the second syllable
Since I'm a Spanish speaking person, I pronnounce it "Oh-net".
People always way it's "Oh-net" or "On-it". I say "OhOn-it".
I think it’s up to the player I mean whatever you call it, it’s still gonna be the same town nothing changes besides how you say it, so why really have a correct pronunciation?
My point is that artistic decisions matter, and something as simple as the pronunciation of Onett has ripple effects on how someone may interpret much of the world and its surroundings.
@@MonkeyNess yeah good point, but still I find it a little silly how people argue over such a little thing
Agreed!
I say "O Net" Thanks to Chuggaaconroy
I've started pronouncing it 1-ett to go with 2-sawn, threed, and 4-side.
That’s what I did for a long time too
I've always pronounced it as on-it and if i try to use the second official japanese pronounciation ah-net then it again sounds like on-it, maybe cuz of like you said, japanese pronounciations being different from english. Either way i don't criticize any pronounciation of it :)
I pronounce it on et when it comes to et i pronounce it like jet without the j so on-et
I say "ON-IT" And sometimes I say "OH-NET'.
I am Ah-Net's strongest soldier
Onett is infamous for it's pronunciation, own net makes sense considering I don't own a net but whatever it's better than one net or being on it I guess.
Onett 🤝 Hydrocity
Fans arguing over how to pronounce their names
I never knew that there’s was a debate about the name, always pronounced as “On-It”
Almost, your “O-Net” explanation is interesting, but you’re giving Earthbound too much credit as a representation of American culture, it’s American as Taco Bell is Mexican
I even say it’s not 1:1 with American culture, simply demonstrating the impacts of even the most minute artistic decisions.
If you don’t pronounce it like either “On-Net” or “On-Nit” then you taking the fattest Ls
3:15 go to cursed images please
As a kid I pronounce it o-net cause I saw the full word onett
I know im wrong, but I like saying it like the words "On it!"
It's always "One net" to me.
i say it like “on-it” 💀
I'm on it again y'all!
I used to pronounce twoson like twonson
i say one-ett because it rolls off the tongue the easiest to me
It's pronounced 「オネット」.
"oh net" is how I pronounce it
You know, I'm not even sure how I pronounced it back in the day. I'm pretty sure I was on team "wun-ette" but I guess I'm in the minority there
Data point: I am canadian. Wonder if dialect differences between US and CAN would cause a different pattern of pronounciation interpretation
I assumed everyone said oh-net
"Jeff spies on Paula"
"Paula couldn't stop crying"
"Poo's body became numb"
"Ness' offense increased by 900"
Honestly, more power to you if you pronounce it "Wunt"
I’ve always pronounced it “On-it”
I'm a weird fellow that says Oh-ney but I also alternate with on-net or one-net
Idk why lol
Wouldnt the other make threed pronounced as "Three-D" lol
