      Even in Tokyo,Japan, if he walked into to my rock climbing/parkour/mma gym, at least 60 % of us here would recognize him, no matter the disguise! And noo, not just because he is a white-man and 98% of us here in my gym are Asian(Yes obviously most are Japanese, but some are Korean ,Chinese,and other Asian peoples!) It is that ,mostly because we recognize him in the climbing world and other”extreme sports “!😜

      Being internet famous is one part of the problem, the other is he's in such good shape it's not believable that he isn't already an athlete of some kind. He would need to put on a realistic fat suit or something to actually fool people now. Also some of his mannerisms like keeping a chalk bag behind his back is sus for a "beginner", nobody would do that in an indoor gym unless they're about to do some big moves.

    Hi this is Paul, yep that one. It’s taken a few days for me to actually pluck up the courage and watch the video, but I think it came out pretty good in the end. The main thing to take out of it imo is what a great community the climbing community is.
    I’ve scrolled down through some of the comments and will add a few of my own.
    The film “crew” is just one guy.
    There was supposed to be a female staff member who had no idea who Magnus is “starring” in the video but she had to pull out last minute so the owners had to try me!
    The vast majority of our customers will never visit a different climbing gym yet alone climb outdoors which is why we use the 4 point belay method as opposed to 5 point. It may look awkward but it’s not, and has the advantage of the belayer always having 2 hands on the tail of the rope. But if customers wish to use 5 point and can do it safely we don’t mind.
    Manny was brilliant and is truly a great guy and a credit to our local climbing community and all that we stand for. Thanks mate👍
    More than happy to answer any more questions you guys may have.

    • @PolishSlayer893
      @PolishSlayer893 6 місяців тому +70

      You can definitely get very good while being heavy! I was 255lbs when I started 2 years ago and it's been an amazing journey. I do have a lifting background so not all was fat but I definitely had a lot of extra fat and 255lbs is 255lbs regardless. It's been so much fun and now I climb 4x a week and been steadily progressing and getting stronger everyday even though I'm still 230-235lbs. Climbing especially at the beginning is more like climbing a ladder, so if you can climb a good ladder then that means you can climb no problem and if you can't it's okay because you will get stronger and adapt very quickly to be able to meet the demands of climbing. Focusing more on straight arms and using feet to climb with was very helpful for me to start. Definitely don't be discouraged and give it a try! The community is also incredible and I've never felt judged or inferior!

      @@darksnow1111
      1. We aren't talking about the guy in the video, we are talking about the commenter and encouraging him to start climbing and not be scared.
      2. You are discouraging someone from exercising? That makes zero sense. Finding an exercise they enjoy will reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease etc. no matter their weight and may also help promote weight loss via burning more calories but also by giving them another reason to lose weight. ie increased climbing performance. Now they have another reason to try and lose weight on top of the other usual reasons everyone has, because they enjoy climbing and want to be better at it.
      There is literally no downsides to trying climbing while overweight. If you do not have any special conditions and can climb a ladder. You can try climbing. Take it slow especially since you are putting a lot more load on your muscles,joints and tendons than someone smaller but in no way is that a negative. Just something to be mindful of and taking appropriate rest while climbing, rest days and recovery.

      @@TheMinarus Yeah but we are talking about a supposed first time climber here. Lead climbing is dangerous if you haven't learned. Foot infront of rope, straddling rope etc, can be pretty big hazards. I understand lead belaying is the more difficult part, but lots to learn for lead climbing too. Also he hardly struggled with clipping, which usually takes beginners a couple hours to get decent at.

    As someone with a similar body type, it was REALLY nice to see this guy in your video. Until now I always just stuck to bouldering since I did not think I'd find someone to belay me. But if he makes it work with his partner (and the ground ankers) I have hope that I soon can try climbing too.

    • @ndazza
      @ndazza 6 місяців тому +23

      For top rope, the weight of your partner is irrelevant since the ground anchor does the work.
      Even for lead climbing there are options. I weight 35kg more than some of my belayers and they can handle it, but most gyms have some options like sandbags, Edelrid Ohm or just tying to an anchor point. This makes them (and me!) feel much safer and more comfortable.
      In other words, go for it 😊

    • @blinny88
      @blinny88 5 місяців тому +12

      I'm a 120kg powerlifter and my 65kg girlfriend belays me just fine. We just put a twist in the rope at the top, the extra friction is enough to not pull her into the wall. Some places don't like you twisting the ropes as it wears them quicker, but it does work just fine.

      I am not a climber but I occasionally belay for a friend of mine who is heavy (because so am I). His gym knows me and I don't have to pay to get in like the others because I am literally only there to support my friend. He doesn't lead climb that often though and with top rope his other friends can belay him.

    • @joeboonmusic4004
      @joeboonmusic4004 5 місяців тому +5

      Oh do it, man! I have a friend whose husband is literally 3 times her weight and she belays him and vice-versa. When she belays they just put a twist in the rope on top rope. For lead climbing they use a device that helps with the weight difference and a sand bag to give her some extra weight. Gotta give it a try! Not to mention the fact that rope climbing is such amazing endurance and cardio training.

    This honestly feels like a nice “Beginner’s Guide to Climbing: Part II, Your First Climb” video that you could see in a gym! Very well done Magnus!
    Just a friendly suggestion if you try this again, for creating a disguise, you could try to change up your overall silhouette with some different clothing choices (though Rungne gear looks awesome!) and by changing up your facial features with a thick beard.
    Also, you have some very recognizable (but cool🙂) mannerisms that you could change up, such as your style of speaking or even the pitch of your voice. (I used to play D&D, and even pitching your voice different, up or down, can make a big difference.).
