Great vid gents. How difficult would it be to modify (shorten) the rack to clear a sunrider? Does the forward non-load supporting mount clear the back of where the freedom panels are removed?
    I wish Rhino-Rack made a backbone/pioneer tray that would clear a sunrider!

The forward mounts do clear the freedom panels. Shortening a tray is possible. I would want to start with a flat pack, disassembled, tray (US only). In Canada, they come fully assembled which would be a pain. You can also slide the tray backward quite far as they have huge amounts of adjustment.

I like the Rhino Rack BackBone. It’s gives you so many options and is fairly strong! I did a little overview of it on mine. I know I was the first to have it in the southeast US at least.

How is the wind noise and load capacity..great video. Thanks 😊

Thanks for watching. The wind noise will be higher with the tray on as compared to Vortex cross bars. However as it is at the rear of the cab and the Jeep is so square it does not catch the wind travelling over the vehicle too much. For weight capacity, this is something that most rack manufactures are no longer giving. This is due to the large variations in usage that is outside the control of the manufacture. Back when RhinoRack did rate this rack it was at 220 pounds of total capacity. However if your vehicle is used under severe conditions you may need to drop raying by as much as half. Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Question about the backbone kit, and maybe you might know. What is the difference between this backbone kit and the Maximus-3 version? Maximus-3 website says it has a capacity of 350 lbs dynamic/ 1000 lbs static distributed. Rhino racks website has the backbone kit max load at 220 lbs static. I thought the backbone was supposed to provide more strength than just mounting it through the top and roll bars. Am I reading it all wrong? Thanks!

Hi Zalde, we met Maximus 3 at SEMA two years back; nice kit based on the Rhino architecture. After looking at the Maximus 3 kit I would consider it equivalent strength to the Rhino offer. Though it's different in how it mounts, the super high promised payload is not supported by any extra bracing for the Pioneer tray. I think the big difference is Rhino has had their kit engineered and certified to Australian standards and Maximus is 'Off Road Use' which may not be certified by any transportation authority. That said, maximus has some really cool parts and I would love to mix the two kit's features.

Choosing to add a Backbone is certainly not for everyone. However, when properly installed, this rack can be the foundation for some really fun adventure equipment. :-)

Drilling is nothing to worry about. Measure carefully and use a good butyl sealant. We have done many hundreds of drill-to-fit installations without any major issues. Very few Jeep high capacity roof racks can be installed without drilling. That said, check out Exposed Racks' click-in system for a strong no-drill solution: modularacks.com/collections/all/products/no-drill-click-in-roof-rack-kit-jeep-wrangler-jl-jlu-jt-2-4dr-hard-top-black
