So very true! Lucky that so many performers, especially that that point in time, appeared on his show. As you stated, it was practically the only place they were welcome, on national television, at the time.
From Big Daddy Kane to Leaders of the New school to a pre superstar Mariah, and Bobby Brown before 'Don't be Cruel' blew up. Too many to name. But you wasn't seeing ANY hip hop on Leno/Carson. But, Letterman had A Tribe Called Quest and Fugees and JayZ etc, too. So big ups to Letterman too. But , yeah Arsenio gave so many their first and some ONLY, major TV appearances.

Neneh got 13 mins of time on the Arsenio show, with 2 songs and an interview. Contrast that with many of today's musical acts who get just 4 mins. for a song and, sometimes, a handshake from the host; few of those ever get that extra bit of "couch time".
Neneh !! I loved the summer her songs first played on the radio. I was barely a teenager, and stuck at home all summer. She is so awesome, then and now.
Wow! She actually sang it live!! Good on her!!! So glad they gave her the chance to perform live, unlike that infamous show where she was forced to lipsync and got caught out.

Wow, finally an actual live sung version! It was quite standard in the 80's for Live performances to be lip sync'd on stage by all famous singers. Nice to see a real life performance, thanks Arsenio!
We didn't get Arsenio this side of the pond at the time but i've seen a few of his interviews now and he was ahead of his time. A really interesting and interested interviewer. Time for him to get a podcast going if he hasn't already..
I watched his show religiously in the 90s growing up and it was phenomenal. I don't know why he stopped calm I don't know if he had health issues or what but he was number 2 the whole time to Jay Leno. He left then he came back and then he left again. When he made his comeback many many many years later he was a little bit different. But he was the best talk show out there in the 90s in my opinion.
The song was written and composed for Cherry's boyfriend at the time, Esteban Caudillo. Cherry gave him the nickname "Che" because he frequently quoted Che Guevara and talked constantly about revolutionary topics. Thus, Cherry's original lyrics were: "Who's looking good today? Che's looking good in every way." After their breakup, she removed this reference to him.The reference to "his crocodile feet" was Cherry's teasing reference to Che's ever present Lacoste tennis shoes, which he even wore with business suits and tuxedoes. The following lyrics were from a Valentine's Day poem Che wrote for Cherry "Wind on my face, sound in my ears Water from my eyes, and you on my mind As I sink, diving down deep deeper into your soul."The two eventually split due to Cherry's belief that Che was too materialistic and loved money more than her, which was the inspiration for the lyrics: "No moneyman can win my love It's sweetness that I'm thinking of.
Loved this interview with Neneh Cherry. Foward thinking with a strong personality. I remember hearing that Madonna felt threatened by her emerging stardom here in the states and sabotaged her career. This was back in the late 80's early 90's and allegedly Madonna encouraged club dj's to not play Neneh's music.
King Kami Quote either of our comments where we identified the rumors we heard as "fact". Should we talk about the court cases that show Madonna interfering in other entertainer's career?
King Kami Why? Because they're about Madonna? She's done all kinds of shitty DOCUMENTED things to other artists in order to further her career and most rumors have a spark of truth in them somewhere. Luckily for Neneh she was the step-child of NYC music royalty and so Madonna's underhanded behavior had no real effect on her career. "Raw Like Sushi" was a HUGE and culturally important album.
King Kami Lots of people worked in the entertainment industry when there was one, not that that employment is a prerequisite for repeating industry gossip but it certainly doesn't hurt, either. Madonna was lucky enough to meet the right people and then sued to remain relevant for the next 30+ years. That's how the industry worked for those who hadn't any real talent but were entertaining in that "clown the blacks and queers" kind of way. Now they sell perfume and bottled water (While the likes of Neneh Cherry still make culturally important music because she is a real talent, even though music affords little payoff, today.).
Madonna is a non talented petty artist with no talent. She has been jealous of other artist and seems to believe she is on equally footing with the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. She boycotted MTV when they named an the video of the year award to the Michael Jackson Vanguard video award and again when they gave Janet Jackson the first ICON award. Madonna has offered nothing to the music industry but her sexuality and that's it. She has always been seen as a gimmick and a joke. When she is listed in top female artist list, it is never the top 25, it is never based on her talent as an artist, but her pseudo influence over a culture and that faded once more talented artist came on the scene. She doesn't like black folks as far as from a music standpoint. She and her white privilege feels she is on equal footing when we know she is not.
