    Oh my gosh, this place is so beautiful!!! You guys make it so real for us viewers, I really feel like I’m there with you!!! Those few houses look so beautiful and showing some parts of them makes me want to be there spring, summer, fall or winter, what a peaceful place.(do you think one or two would be a air bnb) I would so be there. I must say....you two look so good and extremely happy, the joy you both put into these videos makes all other sailing or boating videos fail in comparison!!! I am more excited in every video that you put out, I sure hope that you guys never stop.

      I'm not sure if any of those homes were available through Airbnb, but wouldn't that be cool? Since Vaeroy is only accessable by water, I think it gets fewer visitors than the other islands in the Lofotens.

    Great location. Put this on my Go To list. Love puffins, all dressed up for the show and....the only show is you. So they just sit there watching what you do. The grasses, flowers looked really great in this video at 1080dpi
    Wise decision to turn around. Especially in such steep terrain. Walk along a ridge and then try to find the trail down.... can become a big problem. (Do you have GPS with you? Phone, handheld?) I always carry hiking poles, great stabilizers for going down hill. Also I got some rubbery traction thingies for my boots. Kind of like snow chains. I've hiked two miles downhill on slippery mud. It can be a real drag. Hopefully the 'snow chains' on my boots will help the next time. (Hiking poles, when there's mud or wet earth...take off the rubber tips or they'll get sucked off. )
    Water proof boots are great....until water gets in over the tops. (On the Backpacking Light chat a lot of people hate gortex shoes/boots. They just end up holding in the water. I've got a pair of knee length Sealskinz waterproof socks. They're pretty amazing. You think they're going to be hot, but then you feel air moving across your toes. On a multiday hike in April in England when I finally put them on I noticed at the end of the day when I switched to my sleeping bag socks my feet weren't numb. (With two layers of smart wool they'd take about an hour to warm up.) I also have SealSkinz gloves and made the mistake of kayak paddling with them. Sealskinz are the perfect goretex example. If you sweat they breathe the water vapor away. Get water in by the wrists, or from the tops of the socks (hasn't happened yet) the liquid water doesn't leave. The socks would be perfect for the wet grass, cool weather and bogs you hiked through in Norway. And they'd probably be great on the boat - but not wading ashore.

    I was sure one of you was gonna have a little incident with the kelp and rocks. Challenging, but you did it!
    I'm sure we got only a faint idea of how steep that was to climb, although the shot down into the harbor gave an idea. Wow, slick and steep, that would have been exciting. Good job you two. Puffin sighting would have been cool. Next time, perhaps.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 5 років тому +1

      Hmm, yes it does. Not sure if it really is though, when matching up the horizon line just above, the stern lines up pretty well with it. So it might just be the angle, along with side raking from stern to bow, curving and going slightly higher. Oddly though the mast appears to lean towards port, so not sure if its the angle or if it really is leaning to port. Really need to get directly behind the boat to rule that out. Weight distribution on a boat with all supplies, food, etc can easily account for it listing to one side though.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому

      Great cruising destination, but not the best for sailing. The Fjords are difficult to sail (wind funnels out of crazy directions), and it was mostly dead calm or too strong outside. We motored more here than we have anywhere.... you can see why the Vikings had a lot of rowing positions in their boats. But the views make listening to the motor totally worth it :)

    In Naval tradition, with crossing into the Artic Circle you became a "Blue Nose". A certificate would pronounce the following:
    Be it known to all Walruses, Polar Bears, Narwhals and other creatures of the Midnight Sun,
    that by crossing the Arctic Circle, _____________ has entered the Court of Queen Aurora Borealis, Ruler of Neptune's Northern Realms, who hereby commands that the bearer be numbered among the numbed into the lifelong order of the frozen.
    The initiation would probably involve dunking ones head in the water, you know, in order to become numbed. I am not a Bluenose, so I have not participated in the initiation. I am sure that if you took a shower without a water heater, that would have qualified!
    The Navy has several traditional, I don't know the correct word, so I will call it a designations. Some involve initiations, some are "you were there, here ya go". A lot of the initiation traditions have be restricted or out right banned. Things that were done when I became a Shellback back in 1987 could never be done today. Abuse and humiliation where major parts of the initiations (crawling through garbage, kissing the fattest Shellback on the ships greased belly button). I was digging peanut butter out of my ears for days.
    Before you cross the equator, you're a pollywog. When you cross the equator, you get initiated into Neptune's Domain and you become a Shellback. Traditionally, a leatherback turtle was the symbol of a Shellback (tattoos primarily). If you cross the International dateline going westerly, you enter the Domain of the Golden Dragon. If you cross at 0° N, 180° W, you're a Golden Shellback (prized designation). I believe there is another term for crossing the equator at the Prime Meridian.
    Some of the different designations:
    Plankowner - means you were a member of the commissioning crew of a ship.
    Order of the Ditch - You have passed through the Panama Canal.
    Domain of the Golden Dragon - crossing the International date line.
    Safari to the Suez - for passing through the Suez canal.
    Order of Magellan - for going through the Straits of Magellan.
