I put a stainless steel braided fill/level check hose on my 2014 f150, $100.00 bucks, and tig welded a 1/2" half coupling on the bottom of my tranny pan, all works perfect...
Tip: Take a pair of zip ties and tie the gasket on both sides of the pan. This will make sure the gasket will stay in place. Once you have a few bolts in place, cut the zip ties and pull the off.
For other applications, not necessarily automotive, I've seen people recommend things like a small dob of thick, pasty grease at strategic points and use that to stick the gasket to the spot it goes (in this case, stuck to the transmission housing), then put the pan or whatever back on so you don't have to worry about lining the bolt holes on both the gasket and the cover plate at the same time with the risk of damaging the gasket while doing so, but yours definitely seems the better suggestion here. Typically, as long as you don't go crazy with it, this is harmless to the gasket or to the fluid it's trying to seal against.
Dude it ain't hard to line up the gasket with a couple of bolts once you have a couple bolts in it ain't going anywhere The zip ties are absolutely useless
Great video. One of the first things I do is get the engine trans warm with a quick drive. Then remove the filler bolt and drip stick right above the pan. With the fluid warm, I'll use my drill pump to suck out as much fluid as possible right into a catch pan. Then remove the pan with very little to no spilling of fluid. When time to refill I again use a drill pump to get the new fluid into the trans.

Transmission bolt socket size 8mm, Dipstick cap wrench (mine was size 18mm, some are 19mm), refill 4 quarts, start in park for a few seconds, shut off, add another 3.5 quarts, restart, check fluid while running in park.
I added the last 3.5 with the engine running otherwise it will overfill and pour out. No way you can fill in all 7.5 with the engine off the whole time. You also have to check the silly dip stick when the engine is running too. Watch out for hot cat right by.

@@briandesjardins728 You just have to get temp up to operating temp of over 190F before the valve opens and will let you flush all the fluid. So tell me this, do you think your Ford dealer drives your truck around to get it to that temp before they pull it in the garage and start the flush? Wishful thinking. They pull it right in after it has been parked outside all morning and immediately start a "flush" when it is about same temp as the outside.
I like that you don't do a lot of unnecesary chatter. You can make it less messy when removing the pan by sucking out some of the fluid with a cheap 12 volt fluid transfer pump aval online. Just remove the dipstick and stick the suction pump tube and proceed to suck out most of the fluid.

Thank you for this great video. I wish I knew why Ford and possibly other manufacturers made transmission fluid change so difficult. No drain plug in the pan, no dipstick that doesn't require you be a contortionist. just seems crazy. My question is isn't there still old fluid in the lines somewhere when you do this change, doesn't anything else have to be flushed out?
Thanks for watching! They do it so you have to take it to the dealer. But we got around them. I mean you aren't getting every single drop out. Getting 80 percent out and changing the filter is really the big deal. Thanks for watching!
The 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions are designed to operate under an internal vacuum. This is the reason that the transmission is sealed without a dip stick access. Also, the reason that the fill port should be opened before the pan is loosened and removed. There is a third-party, after market dip stick assembly that can be installed, which seals the dipstick tube at the top of the tube in the engine bay. It sells for about $250 U.S. plus installation, so it's a lot of money to just be able to check the fluid level. A "drain & fill" fluid change only removed about 50% of the fluid from the transmission. Ford does not recommend that these transmissions ever be "flushed" of all the fluid. The tranny holds about 13 liters of oil, so you'll only be draining and refilling about 7 liters. The filter needs to be replaced at every fluid change. The pan gasket is designed to be reusable, so you shouldn't need to buy a new gasket, unless you somehow damaged it during removal of the pan or it previously showed signs of leakage. The final refill level should be checked with the engine hot, but the fill port is very close to the extremely hot catalytic converter, so proceed with caution. Transmission fluid change is a dirty and frustrating DIY job on the driveway, but fairly straight forward if the vehicle is lifted on a hoist, as the vehicle needs to be kept level during the process.
With All Due Respect, You never mentioned the "Reusable Gasket" unless of course you're not a fan of them ? Ford recommends that these transmission should NEVER be "flushed"...just "drain & fill". The tranny holds about 13 liters of fluid, but you'll only be draining and replacing about 7.5 liters. Fluid remains in the torque converter during the drain and it will mix with the new fluid during operation. So, your only really 50% cleaning the transmission, but you also have to do the filter at every change.

Hi 2CarPros. Just changed the trans filter/fluid on my 2011 F150 XLT 4x4. The truck ran great prior to me servicing it. I drained out 5.5qts and added 5.5qts of Ford factory LV fluid. It was a fleet truck and fleet serviced and has 160K miles on it. Last filter/fluid was done at 118K. Cycled the shifter from R to D after service several times. The truck doesn't move in R or D. Double checked the dipstick and it show full. No warning lights on the dash either. Any help before I tow it to my local garage?
2carpros you indicated the fluids needs to be exactly between A and B, but what is the temperature of the fluid at the time its between A and B because in arizona which its like 100+ degree upon start the truck its already hot and canada its about 70 degree less.fluid temperature plays big rule between A and B
that's your normal operating temp then. It won't be as big a difference as the engine still runs warm no matter where you are. internal COMBUSTION means fire so it'll be hot but normal.
The very small dipstick is on the passenger side of the transmission. Looks like a very long bolt head and it has a seal to be water proof. Thanks for watching!
Yep! A little tiny plastic dipstick under the access cap. The final level needs to be checked when the engine is hot, but the dipstick is located about 2 inches from the extremely hot catalytic converter, so proceed with caution.

Question: The manual specifies just a hair over 13 quarts as the capacity. How many quarts did you end up using here? Did you drain the torque converter?
Oscar Sanchez Jr, BSc. this is not going to help you, I've done some research on forums some say 7.5 others 5, and at autozone they told me 3.5 hopefully someone can help us out
Sorry I don't really remember. We just kept filling until it was at the right point. It's always better to buy too many and return some that you don't use. Thank you so much for watching!
elgayetas ford says to start with three and a half quarts, it easiest to do that and then starts the vehicle and go through the gears and let it warm up. Then add until you have the correct amount on the dipstick. Last one I did took about 6 quarts but its a pain in the ass if you overfill
Why do they not put a drain plug in the automatic transmission oil pan? I know it would not be used often, but it would make the job a lot less messy. Cheap and easy to put the plugs in at the factory while making the pan.
You get about 75% of the fluid out and the filter doing it this way. If you want 100 percent you need to take off a cooler line and let that drain out. Usually not worth it imo. Thanks for watching!
Came to this looking to see if I can see the output shaft speed sensor location in the video. Have to replace mine, and shop quoted me at 600 bucks. Would really appreciate it if someone could let me know if it's as simple as 1 bolt past this point. Should be around valve body, right?
I got a 2013 ford f150 with a canceled component so dealer ship can only change it my question is can you flush the transmission fluid with 278 000km on it does it harm it to flush old stuff out?
If the torque converter has a drain plug then yes. It holds about as much as the pan itself, so that's a lot of old fluid in there. I'm about to do mine, and I cross my fingers that there is a drain plug so I don't end up wasting a lot of new fluid to flush out the old.
They made difficult for servicing. I don't see when to change the transmission fluid+filter in the manual book. It says only the transfer case fluid in every 60k mi.
If you purchased the vehicle new, change the filter at 30,000 miles & every 50,000 after that. The Ford recommended interval is way too long. It's much cheaper in the long run to change it out early.
Changed mine out at 182,000. Bought new in 2013. Was told NOT to change by a service advisor if I didn’t do it at 100,000. Didn’t seem right, no issues…. Yet.
I got a question. I took my truck to valvoline oil change place to get my transmission fluid changed about 30 mins before they close and the guy that works there tells me he is not certified to run that machine to change the fluid. But come back tomorrow and this other guy is. I have a 2014 F150 4x4 with a 160,407 miles on it. Was that guy full of bull poop?
Hey I have a 2011 Ford F-150 and I changed the oil and the filter, and now the car doesn’t go in reverse. I tried to push it back when I put it on Neutral and it still goes forward. Do you know a soulution to this?
That is a complicated question, if you go to our website www.2carpros.com and ask a question for free, an expert will be along shortly to help! Thanks for watching!
The answer is it depends. If you're transmission is running normal without any slipping, lagging, or kicking during gear changes then it will not hurt it. But if you experience any of that, then changing the fluid will shorten the life of the clutch or other parts that have been getting by because of the particles floating in the old fluid.
I'm confused about the final level check. All the vids show them run it, then check it with the motor off. I got 8 out and put 8 in. The level is good with it OFF. When I check it running the level drops off the stick.
The purpose of starting the engine is to get the fluids warmer/ at or close to operating temp. The transmission fluid should expand as it warms, that's why its recommended to fill to the bottom of hashmarks on the dipstick when cold. 8 quarts sounds like too much if you only drained the pan. Usually between 6-7 quarts.
so I'm seeing some people say you should glue the gasket to the pan and some saying don't do that I see you didn't is that because you didn't think of it or do you prefer to not do that? if so, why?
Really? Thanks. When I did my E4OD I pumped it out through the cooler lines and it took almost 5 gallons to clear. I heard these have a heat valve that keeps fluid in the trans until it heats up and opens. It's getting a bit complicated to do a 'Saturday Service' anymore.
PLEASE HELP!!! I have 2013 F150 3.5 eco boost with 6R80. My fill plug/dip stick just spins. I can not remove it. The bottom half of the plug appears to be intentionally rounded over. Has anyone ever seen this? I blew a cooler line this past weekend while on vacation 5 hours from home deep in the woods of northern Maine. I cut out the quick disconnect portion that was leaking and replaced it with a 2 foot section of high temp hose and clamps. Had no choice but to add new fluid from the highest point of the cooler line. I only added 1 quart because I had no way of knowing how much I lost. Luckily that seem to do the trick and got me home. How the hell does this come out?
Greetings guys, I have a 2011 F 150 with ongoing tranny problems, I foolishly allowed Ford to upgrade the tranny recall software, the truck will not engage or stay in 5th, city cruising Im revving between 1200-1500rpms, and loosing quite a bit of fuel economy. Previous to this, cruising in the city it would sit nicely at 950-1000 rpm. I can't get anywhere with Ford, they say thats the program, to bad we can't do anything about it. And of course the geniuses at customer service want to prescribe anti -depressants. How do you do a recall and return a vehicle back in this condition. If anyone has any further advice, Im all ears.
I actually had one of these trucks and was in the same situation! But I am afraid there really is no way to go back. The coders write the code in such a way that it can't really be overwritten by a previous version. They make it user unfriendly on purpose. Maybe there is an after market company that can change shit patterns with a tuner that plugs into the OB2 port but, that isn't going to be manufacturer specification. That's really the only way I imagine. Ford isn't going to want to go back to the old shift pattern while it may felt nicer it is probably at the cost of longevity of the unit. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your answer. A recall is suppose to correct or enhance your vehicle, not make it worse. They should have disclosed that the new software would make the vehicle run worse, who's paying for the lost fuel, how can you hand a vehicle back, doing 120 kms less per tank? How do you do that ? The idiots at Ford want to prescribe medication and offer condolences? I can't believe how pathetic Ford has been, they just want to pretend nothings wrong. Ya think they'd offer something for selling a bad vehicle and making it worse. If I screw something up I correct it making it better than it was or equal. If I have a slow week Im gonna park infront of that dealership, with the truck decorated, appropriately.

that's your normal operating temp then. It won't be as big a difference as the engine still runs warm no matter where you are. internal COMBUSTION means fire so it'll be hot but normal.
where is the dipstick/plug located on the trans? you dont show taking the plug out
The very small dipstick is on the passenger side of the transmission. Looks like a very long bolt head and it has a seal to be water proof. Thanks for watching!
What about the fluid in the transmission cooler?
Can't you turn the vehicle upside down so it's easier to get the new filter & the old pan back on?
Hahahah good one! Thanks for watching!
Wow I didn't know there was a dip stick for this transmission. Finally I might change the fluid and be able to check the fluid level😃
Yep! Thanks for watching!
Yep! A little tiny plastic dipstick under the access cap. The final level needs to be checked when the engine is hot, but the dipstick is located about 2 inches from the extremely hot catalytic converter, so proceed with caution.
Hello
My car f150 2013 5.0
It’s now 135,000 miles and im in qatar so the weather hot mostly , it’s safely to changing the transmission and differential oil.
Yeah I definitely would at that mileage. Thanks for watching!
I was told that my 2009 Ford F-150 “might” need the “intake Fuel Runners” replace (a bit over $1000)… I have been looking for a tutorial for a while but I’ve been unsuccessful. Truck runs well.. truck runs well.
Is a cooler line exchange an option? It appears this method doesn't remove fluid in the torque converter. Thanks!
yes the line is by the front left headlight
I did my 14 n very little mess following the guidance. I did find a neat way of adding the fluid. I now have a oil pan bolt to drain from on mine 👍👍
Great tip!
Which one did you use? Have a link?
Steven Perry I watched several but keep a couple front bolts in but loose n tip pan towards the exhaust pipe. Ittl open towards the back n come out somewhat controlled. I used a Tupperware type catch pan about 5” deep n wide enough for 2-3 cakes. I did put cardboard down but not much on it. I got the replacement pan on amazon or EBay but check rock auto. I fabed a long tubed funnel n ran down from the wheel well behind the frame n into the trans. May have to add some after u drive. Keep the skid plate off til. I did all the fluids n those wonderful o-rings in the cooling system. Less than 300$ n my time n no problem just a little learning curve.
@@scottwebber652 What drain plug?
Steven Perry the drain plug is on the replacement pan I mentioned. For the next time
How many transmission oil quarters did you put in? What is the torque for each bolt?
three quarters and two nickels
Question: The manual specifies just a hair over 13 quarts as the capacity. How many quarts did you end up using here? Did you drain the torque converter?
Oscar Sanchez Jr, BSc. this is not going to help you, I've done some research on forums some say 7.5 others 5, and at autozone they told me 3.5 hopefully someone can help us out
Makes sense. The pan isn't that deep and I would usually get around 6 or so from my 4R70W when only dumping out the pan.
Sorry I don't really remember. We just kept filling until it was at the right point. It's always better to buy too many and return some that you don't use. Thank you so much for watching!
Oscar Sanchez Jr, BSc. did you figure out how many quartz came out of just the pan?
elgayetas ford says to start with three and a half quarts, it easiest to do that and then starts the vehicle and go through the gears and let it warm up. Then add until you have the correct amount on the dipstick. Last one I did took about 6 quarts but its a pain in the ass if you overfill
All that side shifting may have allowed the filter to drop. Clean the magnet completely.
What size of tubing did you use for refill?
Why do they not put a drain plug in the automatic transmission oil pan?
I know it would not be used often, but it would make the job a lot less messy.
Cheap and easy to put the plugs in at the factory while making the pan.
So you have to take it to the dealer and pay them money. I believe Toyota still does though. Thanks for watching!
what about all the burnt used oil in the trans and converter
You get about 75% of the fluid out and the filter doing it this way. If you want 100 percent you need to take off a cooler line and let that drain out. Usually not worth it imo. Thanks for watching!
I heard this music on hold today.
Came to this looking to see if I can see the output shaft speed sensor location in the video. Have to replace mine, and shop quoted me at 600 bucks. Would really appreciate it if someone could let me know if it's as simple as 1 bolt past this point. Should be around valve body, right?
I've always wondered why transmission pans never come with a drain plug like an oil pan?
So you take it to the dealer and it's cheaper to make. Thanks for watching!
Exelente video . Pero, por qué no lo sube con el audio o subtítulo en español porfavor
I got a 2013 ford f150 with a canceled component so dealer ship can only change it my question is can you flush the transmission fluid with 278 000km on it does it harm it to flush old stuff out?
Do you need to drain the torque converter as well, I've done it that way in older fords but I've never changed it in my 2011 f150
If the torque converter has a drain plug then yes. It holds about as much as the pan itself, so that's a lot of old fluid in there. I'm about to do mine, and I cross my fingers that there is a drain plug so I don't end up wasting a lot of new fluid to flush out the old.
I cant get the bolts above the exhaust. I have like half an inch of clearance wtf?
Ive got over 200000 miles on my 2013. I think I gotta change the diffs, transfer case, and transmission oils.
Yeah I would. Thanks for watching!
Please help. I have a 2015 f150 44k miles 3.5 v6 standard engine..I don't haul things. When should ATF be changed? Thx
60-80k I would check it. Thanks for watching!
Do you want the trans at operating temp, and motor running when you check the fluid level ?
After you have added enough with it off. You don't want the pump to run dry. Thanks for watching!
Is there a solution to a dip stick and tube like old models.
when you check level fluid are run engin or not
stick says in park and engine idle. so yes
Yes engine on
anek chanabua n
Is this the same technique for a 2011 f150 with Ecoboost? Thanks
Very similar. Thanks for watching!
How to change the other 6 -8 qt of fluid
that is done with the trans flush machine.
They made difficult for servicing. I don't see when to change the transmission fluid+filter in the manual book. It says only the transfer case fluid in every 60k mi.
Yep. But we get around them. Ford says 150k miles for transmission service but I wouldn't go past 100k. Thanks for watching!
Why is it that they don't install drain plugs like oil pans?
They used to. Toyota still does! My guess is cost and so you'll take it to them and they can make money on you. Thanks for watching!
Does it have to be at a certain temperature?
Hi, temp of measuring or it doesn't matter?
You can reuse the gasket and its motorcraft lv transmission fluid
Only if the gasket is in good shape. Thanks for watching!
How much fluid did it take
Very good explanation of changing oil filter oil etc..Thx for sharing!
What about a torque spec on those pan bolts?
The Ford book says 11 but I feel like that is way too loose. Thanks for watching!
How often should you change the transmission filter?
If you purchased the vehicle new, change the filter at 30,000 miles & every 50,000 after that. The Ford recommended interval is way too long. It's much cheaper in the long run to change it out early.
Changed mine out at 182,000. Bought new in 2013. Was told NOT to change by a service advisor if I didn’t do it at 100,000. Didn’t seem right, no issues…. Yet.
What did you use to get to the hard to reach bolts next to exhaust and coolant lines?
Extension and a swivel socket. Thanks for watching!
I mean it sounds like bull poop, but maybe it is Valvoline company policy? Thanks for watching Ryan.
Did you find a solution?
Thank you, This was a great help. My truck has 74.000 miles on it. And I don’t think is ever been done.
Thanks for watching Paul!
I have 2013 Ford f150 5.0L 287 000km on it I last changed my transmission fluid in it at 193 000km will it hurt my transmission to flush it now?
No. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros why do some people say it will so say it won't?
The answer is it depends. If you're transmission is running normal without any slipping, lagging, or kicking during gear changes then it will not hurt it. But if you experience any of that, then changing the fluid will shorten the life of the clutch or other parts that have been getting by because of the particles floating in the old fluid.
I have a 2011 eco boost when I check the fluid while running it sprays out. Is this normal because it makes it difficult to check level
Ya I did this and now it wont go into gear
I'm confused about the final level check. All the vids show them run it, then check it with the motor off. I got 8 out and put 8 in. The level is good with it OFF. When I check it running the level drops off the stick.
The purpose of starting the engine is to get the fluids warmer/ at or close to operating temp. The transmission fluid should expand as it warms, that's why its recommended to fill to the bottom of hashmarks on the dipstick when cold. 8 quarts sounds like too much if you only drained the pan. Usually between 6-7 quarts.
@@cg9608 but the manual says 11.7 quarts for a 3.7 engine. I put 8 as well I don't know if something bad is going to happen of if it alright
I’m still waiting for Ford’s better idea…How many years has it been?
You do know you can reuse the steel gasket and be fine right?
so I'm seeing some people say you should glue the gasket to the pan and some saying don't do that
I see you didn't
is that because you didn't think of it or do you prefer to not do that? if so, why?
NO GLUE. These gaskets are reusable and self sealing. If the gasket is damaged? Get a new one.
would you get Ford product or go to any auto parts store
I prefer the Ford product. Thanks for watching!
Why didn't we change the fluid in the trans cooler? Add a drain plug?
You get nearly all of it out with what we did. Thanks for watching!
Really?
Was the truck running when you added the fluid
Once it had a bit of fluid in it yes. Thanks for watching!
its going to be better if you share the parts# so we can order easily on your website
We don't sell parts. Thanks for watching!
And of course the geniuses at customer service want to prescribe
anti -depressants.
I HAVE A QUESTION TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE ABLE TO GIVE GOOD ADVICE ????
ON MY 2012 F150 3.5 ECOBOOST WITH 207.000 MILES ON MY TRANSMISSION,,,,,,,,,, AN THE FUILD HAS NEVER BEEN CHANGED,
& THE TRANY IS STARTING TO SLIP ON INCLINES UNDER 75 MPH,
AT 80 MPH IT DOSNT SLIP,
WILL MY TRANSMISSION FAIL WITH NEW FUILD AN FILTER ????
How many quarts did you add? I don't want to over buy
7 and 1/2 qt
thx for posting...ford just quoted me $280 to change.. Canada...Jan. 2020..
Now you can do it for just some time! Thanks for watching!
anybody know how much dealer charges for a fluid and filter change on an f150?
Do it your self.
I would not pay over $150. Give or take a few dollars for this service
An astronomical amount.
Damn, that's easy... if I only had a lift!
Get some car ramps homie.. glad I did
How come no one adds some fluid directly in pan before putting it in place?
Because it has a big potential to make a big mess. It would also be a lot harder to get the bolts in. Thanks for watching Bruce!
I change my trans oil and filter on f150 2011 but its not running rite i don't know if the pan bolts are too tight or the filler in place wrong.Any one had this before. The service wrench came up on the dash.
Ford recently had a recall for this truck. Maybe it is related? If done correctly a new filter shouldn't cause any problems. Thank you for watching!
Thanks it was the wrong filter auto zone sold me
Oh that is rough sorry to hear that!
What was the recall regarding, 2Car? I have this same truck and I haven't heard anything about it. You're not talking about the brake booster recall are you?
I'm putting a drain plug n my 2016 F165 when I change it at 60,000. I have a plug n both of my GMs.
Would change it before that man. Ford Tech advice!
I meant cut it in half. Dang fat fingers
Is this the R60/80?
Can you do this with the vehicle parked on level ground or does the vehicle require being leveled physically to be accurate for transmission work?
THANK YOU!
Patrick Amos level ground would be best for accurate fluid level readings. Don’t wanna overfill.
Orrin thank you Sir
Is that the same transmission in the 2014 Ford Raptor?
No it isn't. Thanks for watching!
You forgot to remove and clean the MAGNET while cleaning the pan. (it's the circular thing on the inside top edge of pan)
asdflkjh was just about to say the same thing...be contaminated oil and debris under it now its been sprayed with cleaner...great for new fluid.
And your suppose to open drain plug first thing to relieve pressure. 6r80s build pressure and you can reuse the gasket. Do not scrape the pan mating surface either. Anything outside where gasket meets doesn't hurt seal. Merton lv . They got a lot of things wrong
Or the fill plug.....on 6r80's that do not have drain plugs i.e on Mazda's
brisXr6t fill plug and dipstick is what meant to say. I had a little to much beers in me last night
timglenleigh1 sounds like a good night :D
I have a 2012 F150 FX4 5.0L - Is the gasket reusable?
If it's in good shape then yes. Thanks for watching!
But why would you, re use it...you done bought the new filter kit
Is this on an ecoboost or does it matter?
This is on an ecoboost but it doesn't matter. Thanks for watching!
How much transmission fluid did you have to put back in?
The amount of transmission fluid and fluid level should be set by the indication on the dipstick's normal operating range. Thank you for watching!
around 13 qts check your manual, varies by engine
Fluid and filter change it takes 7 1/2 qt.
The pan drop is around 7. total is closer to 13 for a flush but a lot is still in your piping when you are dropping pan engine off.
Had mine serviced at the dealer last week. Charged for 14 quarts ($5.61*14=$78.54). Labor and parts $219.79 total.
Question the car have to be on or off when you put the oil in?
Off. Please do not run your engine without oil. Thanks for watching!
can you also specify the engine? I don't think I have the same pan setup.
other than that very informative :)
This is for the 6 speed you may have the 4 speed. Thank you for watching!
6r80
Thanks for the video! Could Ford have made it any more difficult to drain and refill the damn thing??? 🙄
Yeah I'm not sure why they made it this difficult. I guess so you take it to the dealer. Thanks for watching!
2CarPros how often should I be changing this fluid and filter?
Ches Jeter if you can’t not be an asshole then don’t comment! Thanks for your unwanted response! Oh yeah emoji 🖕
thank you sir. a very clean professional job!!!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
