As someone who’s Native American I’m so glad to see you recognize where it actually came from ❤❤❤
Yeah I didn’t know that natives made it . I thought it was something black folks or southerners made
@@EveofPyrite It is. I am a Black southern woman and cannot remember when my mom or aunts of family friends did not make hot water bread. However, my aunt told me she though it was originated by Indians because they used corn in a lot of innovative ways.
Is this recipe similar to polenta?
@@bertvirgo57 Polenta and cornmeal are basically the same, but cornmeal is ground more finely. You can use polenta for cornbread, but cornmeal is better. The taste is very similar. They're both ground corn.
Corn, beans, tomatoes, and potatoes, and tobacco all originate from the Americas, and were brought to Europe.
Look at all these different people saying polenta and corn with jalapenos, some are mentioning corn porridge. my family are from the Caribbean islands and my mom used to make cornmeal cereal. Look how beautiful that is ,everyone from all different parts of the world talking about 🌽. God does not have a problem with any of our colors because he made all colors but mankind does. Thank you Miss Pam
God bless us! 🙌 I have corn bread 🍞 this way ! and that way peppers 🌶 corn 🌽, butter milk what ever, however It seems we all like 👍 domestic form of cornbread! Yummy 😋 😋 😋 😋. Thank you Pam! 😊
I once saw a Man on Fb months ago explain and make Hot water Cornbread. But the way he explained it was very confusing. I appreciate you Pam for explaining this way of doing it. You made it seem so easy to do. Thank you so much.
God gave us so many types grains and vegatables to enjoy. And different cultures came up with their own ways to eat them. Nice to learn about all the variations 😊
That is how my grandmother and mother made it but they fried it in rendered bacon fat. I still use that 80 year old cast iron fryer to this day!😊👍👨🍳😋
YESSS...my mother & her mom( my grandma) always rendered a "strip a lean" or fat back as they called it to fry in...no vegetable oil lol❤
I know everything you cook in your seasoned skillet is delicious 🎉🎉🎉
That's how my Nana did it. She and Papa lived well into their mid to late 90's! With a diet like that, and relatively low health problems - it just confuses me. Bless them though and I miss them both. 😅❤
❤❤❤
@@karascene13They didn't have to deal with additives and knew how to get rid of the 'bad' during strict enslavement. That's the difference.
I am a 76 year old Southern reared lady. Recovering from stroke/M.I. limits my resources for for preparation. Because I love CORNBREAD, I was delighted to have you teach me about this Native American version. Looks Yummy! Honey Butter was a mystery, until you taught us! Appreciate your expanding my world. Nutrition is difficult to maintain. Blessings...
Sending healing prayer your way ❤🙏❤
It wasn't until I left for college that I realized most people eat baked cornbread. I had never heard of it being cake-like and thought that all cornbread was fried in a cast iron skillet and flat with lacey edges. Mama drained them on brown paper grocery bags next to the fried pork chops. Oh my!
My mother drained all fried things on well crumbled up paper bags since paper towels pool the oil, while the nooks and crannies of wrinked up paper lifted it up to drain and crisp.
@@toniskinner9874 Absolutely! I don't fry much for health reasons, but that's how I still do it when I fry pork chops.
Reheating fried foods in the oven on crumpled aluminum foil also helps crisp things up.
@@kimrespess6580 Thanks for the foil tip. I do use the air fryer more and more lately.
Oh you got to try the corn bread in the oven it is delicious and you can use butter on every bite you eat yum yum
@@hazel5520 I do like it as well, but it is a totally different experience. Sweet cornbread muffins or baked in the cast iron skillet is quite delicious too.
Ms. Pam - I have been under so much stress lately and life can feel overwhelming sometimes. But your videos are like a warm soft hug and you don't know how much I appreciate that.
Agreed. Her smiles warm my heart!
Yup.
Comfort food...
Me too.
I pray that everything works out for you. Ms. Pam's voice is also very soothing.
@@wendyjohnson4220 Thank you so much. I'm feeling a bit more hopeful lately. And yes, she is just a comforting soul and it's wonderful that people like her exist in this big world!
My mama used to make this recipe so much… I loved when she incorporated onions.I wished I would paid attention to her cooking bc I would give anything to taste her hot water cornbread just once more 😔
RIP mommy… I miss you desperately ❤
Chop up a onion and remember her.
Do your best the hot water cornbread in her honor and your memory then Madame Give the Lord Jesus all the glory thank you so much for sharing😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Amen,We sometimes never really know the value fully of Our Moms until they are gone. The most valuable person in the world in a family, the Glue that Holds the Family together!! God Bless You!!❤❤
Im 72, and my grandmother made these, but she put some bacon greese in for the fat. Now, that was something we couldn't get enough of. I haven't made these in years. I forgot all about them. Thanks for the video!
This is how our family make cornbread dumplings! We placed them on the top of the collards in the pot just before collards were done. Everyone wants a dumpling on the side. Great video!!!
Yes!! We make cornbread and dumplins this way. In collards and cabbage. Only difference is we throw in a handful of flour. Whatever a handful is 😃
Misplaced the ingredient part the storm messed it up can you repeat this 😢❤
love that collard n dumplings combo too
Oh what a memory. My mom wrapping hers in the greens and cooked them that way. My mouth is salivating right now.
My precious Mother did the dumplings and the hot water corn bread!!! SO delicious every single time!!! Yes our indigenous ancestors passed this on to us. ♥️❤️
OMG! I've always wanted to know how to make hot water cornbread! Thank you verrrry much Pam!😊
Aaawww Mary you are very welcome!!
Ms. Pam great attitude, great smile, great food❤
You make it look so easy I'm going to try this my neighbor used to make it for us She spoiled us My dog loved her cornbread She would wait at the fence for my neighbor to bring her a piece The way to the heart can be had with good food Yum 🥰
If you add sugar and change the shape, then they will be called Sorrullos. You can put cheese in the middle
Say what? Sorrullos? Interesting, where does this originate from?
@jeanwilson3752 Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, if you add sugar, they will be sweet. Also, you can add cheese in the middle. They are yummy. You can look in Google for a recipe
@@carmennunnally5776 I never knew what a "sorrullo" was until now but I always heard it in the song lyrics, " Oyes sorrullo " 😂

This is cool. I have never seen cornbread cooked this way, cant wait to try it. It’s almost like a cornbread cookie. 😋
Especially when you smash it with some seasoned greens 🥬
This is a old school broke and poor recipe

I’ve given up on no bread diets and started learning how to cook like this. I feel better!
Oh, Pam! Corn bread with honey butter served with my mom's chili--- made any Montana winter night nice and warm! Thanks for the reminder of good memories. I love your channel!
I enjoy watching you. Sometimes it reminds me of times when I watched my mom cook. Makes me shed tears of joy or I just smile 😊
I could see making it savory with jalapenos. Thanks for the recipe!
Yes! That’s another delicious version. I have also put crumbled bacon in mine 😋
Oh and dip them in ranch!
Perfect timing! My Dad grew up eating cornbread made this way. I was just thinking i wanted to find out how it was made so that i could make it for him. Then your video showed up. Thank you!
You put that energy out there, and it came back to you. You and dad enjoy, I know he will be surprised and happy. 👍🏽💕
I had fried cornbread this week. Made just like yours. I dippped mine in cane syrup with butter. So good. People do not know what they are missing. Thank you.
May God bless you and yours. Love your videos .
I am 62 yrs old and never made it this way.
This is so much better than what I used to do. It is perfect. I have made it twice already. Thankd for sharing this technique.
My mom and grandma saved their bacon grease in a strainer on the stove and fried their cornbread in the bacon grease and put them on a big torn up grocery paper bag to soak up grease. Now THAT'S old school.😂😂 We never used paper towels...did they have them in the 1950's? I'm not sure. But chicken and pork chops too. I sure miss the old days....and you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you.❤
YUMMMMY !!! My Mamma used to make this kind of cornbread for us when she was alive. Using SR Cornmeal, she would mix it like you did and scoop it out using a LARGE mixing tablespoon. She would place it into the frying fat, and, we liked it to be a heavy golden brown. Another fried cornbread she made was what we always called "Waterbread." It was made using ALL PURPOSE Cornbread Mix and water. The batter was thinner than that above, and, she would fry it til the edges were crispy and brown. We would eat that mostly with her homemade vegetable soup. She also made the EELBECK hushpuppies, dropping them in tablespoon sized dollops like the first I mentioned above. The second "Waterbread" cooked up to be flat and had those crunchy edges all around that wouldn't form if you had too little grease to fry them in. TYSM cause NOW I'm wanting to make myself some of the cornbread you showed in your video - and some crispy "Waterbread, too.!" YUMMM !!! 😋👍😍😻
Ms. Pam, thank you so much for posting this. My dad makes a mean hot water cornbread and your video reminded me of him. He got the recipe from his grandmother who was half-cherokee/half-black. I'll definitely try your recipe as well!
I'm glad you gave the history of this dish.
Good luck with the contest.
Much success and health to all.
Thanks Ms Pam, this is the recipe I’ve been looking for. The others I’ve found used pancake like batter that is poured into the pan it was good but not what I was looking for. Still learning @71+ . Now it’s 10in the morning and I’m off to cook some Lima beans and Hot Water cornbread 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Blessings 💜💚
I hope your kids appreciate you. I would give anything to have a mom like you.
Im not southern , nor native American , but im Italian and love Cornbread and polenta , i was actually raised on corn 🌽 dishes , thk you for sharing this recipe , and thk you to native American ppl and Southern ppl as well , ❤❤❤❤ have a blessed day Everyone 🙏♥️🌺
They are so good with honey butter! You cannot beat God's natural honey goodness! I bet these little fritters would be amazing with some homemade clotted cream, too! It's been a long time since I've had cornbread fritters of any kind. Now that I've watched you make them, I'm gonna have to make some for myself, probably for my evening snack. I love the relaxed, still, very enthusiastic nature of your videos, such as this one, as they just feel so nice to experience, like a cool breeze on hot, humid day! Love you, Ms. Pam!
I have never heard of hot water cornbread but I want to eat it now. Growing up my dad made cornbread pancakes 😂 I guess this is what he was trying to make . It was yummy but always overcooked cause my dad always cooks food on high heat . Thanks for sharing this I’m gonna try to make it.
We were raised on these cakes. I learned how to make them at a young age. They are delightful. My mother also made cornmeal porridge. It was similar to cream of wheat. ❤ your videos.😊
My mama ( from Michigan ) made “ Yankee corn bread “ with left overs we had it as dessert with hot milk, butter and sugar. She also made mush, with left overs she would put it in a loaf pan slice it and fry it for breakfast. Gosh I miss her. Margo Helen McCann Lewis. 1922-2009.
Oh my favorite thing is cornbread! Raised in the South it was always made with greens, beans, peas, sooo good ! I love this way, also extra liquid soupy texture for thin thin crispy edges , or skillet in oven with crispy edges. Pam you are making me hungry lol. Xoxoxooxox
Lol thanks
I dedicate this video to my lovely late extra mom. She made this. I never ate it, though. My bio mom, she used to make Jiffy Mix for most part, here and there, Quaker. I ate that.
When I was 22, 23, I briefly made some Martha White.
I do love watching Pam, though. I totally dig the tea kettle!
Thank you for teaching me this neat simple recipe to try and second for the two spatula method, I hate cooking with oil because of the splashing and never thought to use two.
My mother use to fix cornbread like that. I have been wanting some so bad. Thank you Pam! 😊
my mom used to make this thanks for bringing back those memories. Some of you guys have inspired me to start my on channel. i had a stroke a few years back
i wanted to start a homesteading content. we have lots of animals but my left leg isn't to good so have to use a cane left hand doesn't work at all so walking around with a Camra while doing my chores just doesn't work. lol but as i was watching some of you guys cook one day i thought what the heck i can cook and love cooking and talking. lol i can put the camera on a tripod so I'm gonna do it i made three little videos just fooling round talking cooking shared on face book got great feed bac so douwn loaded to you tube for a start pray for me pleas .
Pam, my Mom told me about corn bread recipe adding 2 cans of cream corn and 1 can regular. People eat it up like crazy and it's SO delicious!!
I make that-we call it corn casserole here in the Deep South. Paula Dean add sour cream into the ingredients before baking-but not me-it’s delicious as is!
@debbieramsey8933 yess, sour cream is too extra. That dish drives everyone insane how good it is. Almost everybody asks for it here when we make it. Happy to know you know it as well! 😃
You add that to the hot water cornbread recipe
Oh my goodness! I grew up on this in Memphis TN. It would go great with those chicken sausage cabbage rolls IMO. Miss my mother’s and grandmother’s cooking…
I love the 2-spatula method, thanks 🙏🏾 ❤
You’re welcome 😊
Hot water cornbread with poached eggs or fried eggs are amazing. Maybe you could come up with a sauce for that combo I'd love to see it. Great video thank you.
Thank you for your easy to follow instructions! I can hardly wait to make these! 😋👍
Reminds me of fried cornmeal mush we ate for breakfast when I was a kid (more than a few years back!) Thanks for sharing!
I didn't know that hot water cornbread was introduced to us via Native American Indians. Thank you for sharing the knowledge!
I love that you don't measure anything. As a child, my mother never measured anything. She cooked by trial and error. When she was teaching me to cook, she would just call me into the kitchen to help her get the supplies out to what she was preparing and then tell me to sit down and watch her prepare it. I miss her so much.
Pam I’m going to make these right now for breakfast. I’m gluten intolerant and am excited to find a recipe without flour. You’re a lifesaver, thanks so much. I love to cook and bake so I’m enjoying your channel. Blessings
Auntie Pam coming through with the cornbread on this beautiful Sunday!!! 📝💛🙌🏾
Oh my goodness, Pam’s done it again, she always gets my tummy rumbling 😂 God Bless you Pam ❤
Have you ever heard of the South American cornbread patties called "arepas"? This is very similar.
Oh Ms Pam, I am Finally watching Someone who makes Hot Water Cornbread Properly.
My Mother used to makes these for us all the Time.
Yours look Just like Hers.
You are Right, They are Good with, Greens, Beans or as a Snack with Honey Butter. Mmmmm.
Thank You.❤
My Daughter is coming up this Morning. I am going to make some for us.
So happy to see someone who make it the old fashioned way. People are adding things that was originally not in the hot water cornbread. You make it like my grandmother, mother and her sisters make it. They. may as well go ahead and make oven cornbread.
I make Hot Water Cornbread like my mom/ family showed me. I put a little monk fruit. I'm going to try the butter when I cook it again.
I love ❤️ how the Water Cornbread comes out crispy and soft and moist. Thanks for sharing
Cornbread is one thing I haven’t made but want to try. This method looks fairly easy. It’s late and now I want some, my mouth is watering lol. Thank you Pam
You can do it!
Now you're taking me back to my childhood I loved hot water corn bread
I like your two spatula method. Genius!
I saw your video advertised when it came out but I did not watch it then. I knew that I would review it when I next made hot water cornbread. Well, today I made chicken vegetable soup. I then watched your video and immediately followed your recipe. While I added a bit too much water, it was the best hot water cornbread I have ever made! And, I have made it for years! Thank you for the perfect hot water cornbread recipe ever!!!
Thanks for sharing this! My dad told us that this kind of cornbread was all they had to eat sometimes during the Depression. His mom in Mississippi taught my mom how to make it and we ate it frequently when I was growing up. I loved it with just some butter on it. Guess I'll have to make this again...
❤ love, love LOVE this recipe and how well you explained each step. I did it exactly as you demonstrated, and it came out perfectly the first time! Love this channel. ❤
What a wonderful treat! Thanks Pam💜
I absolutely love to see someone enjoying food! Looks beautiful, I will have to source some corn meal as its not something we use regularly in the UK.
Hi Pam.I enjoy your presentations and recipes.I just cooked some "HWCB"and added dried onion flakes giving it that hush puppy flavor in my opinion.
I make many kinds of bread for my family but I myself don’t eat it. I don’t eat grains but corn is a vegetable so I do eat tortillas and such. I am excited to try this and my grandkids love anything I do from scratch and I think they will love this as well. Thank you Pam. You are such a beautiful woman.
I’m a lover of Jiffy but lately it’s just too sweet. I’m going to try your recipe. I have tried other methods and didn’t like them. My dad (RIH) he only ever made his in a small cast iron pan. He filled the oiled pan with his rather loose batter and it had to be black on the bottom to be done. Bless his heart. He was always offended when we didn’t want to eat his cornbread with him.❤
Oh my gosh! Sounds good, Pam. I think that I will make this sometime soon! 😋
Hey Chef thanks for this amazing recipe I love hot wata cornbread it look delicious 😋😋!
Thank you Ms Pam!! I'm cooking this next Sunday!
Ms. Pam!!! Ms. Pam!! Ms. Pam!!! I just made this with an all veggie dinner, and I'm about to POP!!! It went well with green beans, butter beans, half ear of corn, and zucchini n squash!!! Thank you so much!!!

I recommend two spatula method for when making certain stuff on electric griddle is cannot use tongs. Food can easily slip off the edge.
I remember my boyfriend once upon a time using two spatulas to scramble eggs when he used to volunteer somewhere. It was so absolutely dynamite!
11/13/23: Hi Pam. Even if I don't make everything you demonstrate, although I have made a few (including tips I've tried), I still love watching your presentations and bubbling personality 'cause you're very knowledgeable and I learn from what you bring to the table. Thanks again for this recipe, which I am going to try. 😋
I have loved hot water cornbread since I was a little girl 😋 It was one of the first things I learned to cook along eggs as soon as I was able to reach the stove. I love it with collard greens or cabbage. I'm trying it with butter next time instead of vegetable oil 😊
Pam!! Perfect timing! I am in the middle of frying fish, southern mustard greens, and butternut Mac and cheese. Cornbread is next and you popped up on my notifications!! ❤
Whuuuuut, hot water cornbread is a Native American dish? I just knew that it was a black folks dish. Hot water cornbread is my favorite kind.

I have got to do this!!! Thank you Pam!!! ❤
I love watching you. I had never heard of fried cornbread until I saw you make it, then it was on a few other channels. I haven't tried it yet, but my husband (of 51 years) just has to have corn muffins. When we got married I made corn bread and served maple syrup with it . He had never heard of that and wouldn't try it. I thought that our family was the only ones who ate it that way until I watched a show about the maple run in New England. They made syrup from the maple sap and served it on cornbread. My mother's father's ancestors were from New England. I like to hear and try other family recipes.
Wow. I'm almost ready to actually make one of these recipes. I'm just going to keep watching until I'm so motivated that I actually go in the kitchen and make some of these things. I'm almost there! LOL (I do not cook) Thank you for making this easy.
This is my absolute favorite cornbread. In high school, I learned to cook it and than made it every weekend.
Hi Pam, I love your videos!! I hope you continue to tell us what to do - lol

You brought back some good memories. My mississippian mother always made these. She feed them to me with a cold glass of buttermilk or with greens, or beans. I myself haven't made them in years! I think they'll be incorporated back into my weekly meal rotation. Thank you for reminding me!
Thank you for showing us the 2 spatula method, that's a great trick. Those look just like the ones my mama used to make.
