    Love this. I’ve only been using old Kino housings because they were lying around when I switched over to Select 31 and 41 LEDs. Nice to see the differences btwn Honey Crates and DoP Choice.

    I worked on a TV show for the CW. The gaffer had some generic astera modifiers from a Chinese company called kinosun. They are well made and a quarter the cost of name brands. I bought some for myself for my nanlite 4' tubes.

    Amaran grid is just like honeycrate. Works great on the Tc series.

    Thanks for this, haven't seen anyone do a modifier comparison for LED tubes and this was super informative.
    I can think of situations where either a soft or hard edge would be useful so like you said it may be more a matter of preference than any distinctly "best" option

    The Honeycrates are great for Astera tubes, but instead of making a slightly longer version for 4' Quasars they just give you the modifier for the Asteras with a little 4" or 6" extension piece that can be easily lost, especially if you are renting it out. It also fits a little weird due to its small size. I'd rather have the DoP Choice version for Quasars for the simplicity.

    With the kenoflo housings you also can put on a hard honeycomb grid.

      Yes, but it doesn't work that well on a single tube. You can get "bat wings" that are like a cell wall or cutter that attaches to the tube. They work better.

    This might be a dumb question, but do the modifiers only help shape the light and control the light or by using it in a more controlled manner does it increase the brightness by focusing it… not sure if that even makes sense but I thought I heard you answer similar questions in previous videos. Thank you so much and so glad I found your channel.

      It reduces the beam angle giving you control

    Hey man, thanks for doing this comparison. DOP Choice creates such a defined edge, dang.
    My 6ft Honeycrates for Quasar Tubes do fold in half before going in their bag (thankfully)
    Also, they have a little tiny strap of velcro on the front edge of them in a few places that you can use to narrow the beam angle down. Did the 4ft version have that also? They're very small and I almost didn't notice them on mine at first.
    Cheers mate!

    Great review... What would you personally go with if you had a set of four 4’ Nanlite tubes? Kinos are out of the option bc of storage limitations. I like the build quality and set up time of honey crates. For Nanlites version I would most likely use the crate in conjunction w the barn doors which gives a comparable look to honeycrates. DoP Choice is nice too. What would you recommend? I have an skb wheeled hard case for my tubes at the moment and it has some extra space for modifiers.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому

      I would have to let you decide that, it isn't an easy decision as every option has different pluses and minuses, and it also depends on the rest of your lighting kits capabilities.

    What are your thoughts regarding the Godox SL-60 series? I have a limited budget and I don't know what to get. Tungsten is better quality of light, I know, but it's not practical for me right now.

  • @moonpost
    @moonpost 3 роки тому +3

    Thanks, Andrew. The most horrible thing about the NanLite barn doors is that they completely and utterly block the light's control screen! Really unfortunate placement/design, but otherwise I've been really loving the PavoTubes!

    Have you tried the Nanlite 120cm units with Astera AX1/Titans?
    From the video and online measurements it seems like they'd work (with ~8cm of excess barndoor+grid on each side that wouldn't bother me)

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 роки тому +1

      Since making this video, I have discovered that a Titan tube is slightly bigger then the T12 standard and won't fit into the Nanlite clamps

  • @gangd4807
    @gangd4807 3 роки тому +2

    Damn it. Kino is the best.. They reversed the time.
    You said nanlite is cheap, but I think the best way is invest more money and use kino. The nanlite price is almost the same as the diffuser of the p300!!

      A long time ago, when I was very poor, we used to make "Billy Boxes" for our short fims.
      You take a box, line it with tin foil from the super market, then we would put a florescent tube inside (now you would use a LED), and then put diffusion over the front.

    What do you think, are asteras Titan much more better then these nanlite tubes? I wonder what to buy for my small music video production: 2 asteras or 4 nanlite? Thanks
