    Another great review, Andrew. It's almost a shame that these companies don't put the gear in your hands before nailing down the firmware. I'm guessing some of these issues could have been resolved in a matter of a day or two of programming. I understand that some consumers prefer 'speed to market' over 'nailing down the problems', but the truest test of a company is how fast they can make changes once the flaws are pointed out. After all, there never is/was/will be a perfect product released at just the right time and with no flaws.

      I did some testing on this about a year ago. I didn't test CTB or CTO. I just tested a RGB Quasar set to 100% Red vs an Aputure 120D with a Red Gel. To the eye they looked the same, but to the camera the lamp thru a gel created more tonal contrast than RGB Quasar. So I was thinking that gelling wider spectrum lights must give a thicker(?) spectrum than just an RGB LED. I'm sure Andrew can give more details. But that was my quick unscientific test results.

    • @SamHeesen
      @SamHeesen 2 роки тому

      @@AlexDerrick_DP Yes, you are correct. If you aren't familiar with SPD's (spectral power density) graphs I'd recommend reading about them. An RGB LED would give you a spike at a specific wavelength with little else, if you lit the entire scene that way it would be monochrome, practically black and white (black and red to be precise).
      Whereas with a broad spectrum light, like tungsten etc, no gel could subtract all the colors so that all is left over is the singular spike around one wavelength from a RGB LED, though a dichroic filter may be able to do so.

    Awesome, thanks Andrew! The only one on UA-cam talking about the "slow refresh" in the pixel effect and the out of sync in serial. Once they fix the driving mode, these tubes will be a really good option to asteras.
    EDIT: I bought a kit of this a few days ago, on sign up the app keeps saying "Network request failed" and I can't use any of the functions. Got them for a shoot for the chase light function and I wasn't able to use them. Super annoying and not happy with the purchase, I don't recommend them right now.

    What would you recconmend for a live stream DJ set up environment (wall mounted). As in they will be behind a DJ/Act with a mirrorless camera set up towards the LED tubes. Titans tubes? i want the best quality looking ones for visual effects and colour. it would be a permanent install fixture 90% of the time for a live streaming studio. Reason being I'm opting away from a green screen to a lighting show due to it being too bright on the eyes / room. Also to note DMX controlled is the ideal set up I'm after so speed and sync is crucial. Also is there anything to look out for product wise in the future?

    I bought the pavotube 8t7x on a spur, already loving it. I was going to get this one above but was not able to save well. And thought i would not get a light until October at the rate I am saving then I was like less just get 8t7x since its in my monthly budject range that i didnt use up yet. Got it, love it, just wish it were brighter but its so affordable i can buy another next month which will get me more light and it will steal be cheaper than getting 2 of the one above and lighter weight so defintely just going to buy a lot of 8t7xs maybe 4 thoughout the rest of the year. i might buy one like the one above If I randomely get a large check which actually happens sometimes. I just dont like saving for stuff XD.

    Hi Andrew, amazing review as always. Nice to see a fellow Melbournian being THE authority on all things lighting. I got a question, how would you compare these Pavotubes to Godox TL60? Obviously they are superior, but how superior are they really, given the 50% or so bigger price for 15x? Are they really double the power in brightness compared to TL60 (35W vs 18W for relevant model sizes)? Also, did you manage to control the pixels through DMX, and how smooth was it if you did?
    Cheers from Brunswick.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 роки тому +1

      The pixels can be controlled via DMX. Each pixel is essential a seperate light. So lots of DMX Chanel's.
      I can't remember much about the godox unfortunately.

    Hi Andrew. For a small portable Documentary light, what do you think about a set of 4 X15 Pavotubes in the small 2 foot 4Bank fixture with the detachable Grid. Do these things play nicely together? I'm hoping to have something that is brighter than what Kino makes, and is easily battery powered. Of course you can pull the tubes out which is super flexible. Just hoping for your thoughts. This is as opposed to just a Diva 21 or equivalent.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 роки тому

      It sounds like a good option, and I know people who do it, just bate in mind that the back of the tubes don't emit light, so the reflector won't come into play.

    Question regarding power: Is it possible to daisy chain AC power using a splitter cable to 2 or even 4 tubes? I've seen a gaffer use a splitter for the fixtures connection cable (2.1 x 5.5 mm?) to power two of the previous version tubes. If so, is there a splitter cable you recommend?

    As always, thanks for a wonderful and in depth review Andrew. Sorry if this is a silly question, but is it possible to have a static color/brightness gradient across the fixture? For example, could I have one end of the fixture magenta, with a smooth transition to cyan on the other end, that I can lock in and keep static? (Also, can I manage brightness of the gradient, and can I do this within the app/without DMX).
    I've been searching for a lightweight option like a light matte chroma that can maintain static RGBW gradients across their surface, and I hope that these, through some diff, could be the answer. If you know of any other lights that could achieve what I'm looking for (while being low-weight for overhead rigging) that information would be much appreciated.
    You are an absolute resource to so many of us. I tell everyone I work with who cares about lights about your channel. Thank you for everything.

      @SamHeesen 2 роки тому +1

      @@gaffergear Thanks for the response! :) It's like hearing from a personal hero!
      Is your answer "No" because locking it in static is an issue, or because it requires DMX, or it's just impractical for rigging.
      For what I'm looking for, what fixture would you recommend? Or should I just wait and give it some time for the market to provide what i'm looking for? I'm trying to keep budget under 4-5k aussie for an extended source that's at least 30cm by 100cm (though diff obv. can effect that.)

    Had very bad experience with these fixtures. Got 6 pieces, one of them had board damage which made the screen flicker and jump. Didn’t unpack the rest, went back to the shop to return the whole set. At the shop the staff opened up the rest and found out that two more have the same issue. We checked serials and the whole set was from same batch. Idk what the size of the whole batch is, but they are out there. Still waiting for Amaran tubes from Aputure. In the mobile phone app, can you see the battery levels of the individual tubes?
    I own a set of 4 the older generation pavotubes and my biggest complaint about them is the quality of the internal battery. Even between the 4 lights, the battery life was inconsistent between them. If I was relying on battery power for a shoot, I could only use 3 because I'd have to keep the 4th as a backup for when one of them would drain to 0% prematurely. Also if the lights would be put away for a few weeks, not in use and with a full charge, the batteries would still drain slowly down to zero.
    In your opinion, has the battery quality improved over the previous generation?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 роки тому

      I own 16 of the old tubes, you are being very nice. Battery consistency, battery readings, battery charging was shit. This is huge improvement over the old units.

    I don't have expertise to find out why there are so many reports on HW defects of their new X tube lights. But their software quality control is horrible. It is not just driven by "Speed to Market" strategy. Their Nanlink transmitter box couldn't even pass the basic test with the loaded firmware. And unfortunately some content providers (not gaffers) keep feeding the idea this is the way it supposed to be for software, just wait for the next upgrade. One customer reported he "fixed" the wireless control issue by switching the light on/off multiple times, their marketing guy responded "when something can't work on my mobile or computer, I also do this just reboot the system". He got a thump up from his boss.
    Even a software engineer like me don't dare to defend myself like this in public.

      When I was testing for the review I thought something must be wrong with my phone, because I was the only reviewer who was reporting problems. I wasted days trying to problem solve what is now obviously a shit app
      Then after watching everyone else's reviews I realised that everyone else only had one tube. Looks like the app works great with only one tube.

      @@gaffergear Same here...I spent a lot time to figure out what went wrong with firmware update and some basic functionality on my own 6c. And then I started to see some production reports, with clear steps to reproduce critical software issues with grouping lights, especially with their new transmitter box. And I've also read reports on abnormal rattle sound when some customers shook their brand new lights. I had ok impression about LEDGO lights, Nanlite C tube lights, and the Mix Wand you reviewed, but didn't expect the new ones are kind like moving 1 step forward feature wise, but 2 steps back quality wise.

    RUNS TOO HOT. While I respect and love your content, I also use them sometimes, as basis of buying some gear. I recently bought a total of 18 tubes from Nanlite (box set of 8, 2x set of 4, and 1x set of 2). Received them and tested them over the weekend. And
    1. 2 tubes had issues right of the box
    2. ALL the tubes get super hot, to the point of almost not being able to hold them, otherwise you risk burning your skin
    I am not sure if I got 18 lemons, but my guts feeling is that if I can have 18 units all exhibiting certain pattern, its safe to assume and conclude.
    With all due respect, without you mentioning the crazy high temperatures these tubes run on, its seem like you are hiding that fact.
