    I really wanted to love the Nova but it has a few compromises...

      Me too, I'm trying to convince Aputure to make a pro end ball mount or a pro end stirrup.
      They are not convinced that a gaffer would pay the extra because they don't know our market.

    I love it when you actually say how do you feel about a product and what does it do to you in a personal way. Such a valuable information from an actual gaffer working in the field. You don't know how much your stuff has actually influenced my decisions in preparing lighting package, modifiers, and making things simpler and neater. Please keep doing this.

    Hi Andrew, Chris here , Gaffer at Film Lighting NZ in New Zealand. Mate been watching your reviews for the past year, they are great, all the technical information re Colour etc plus the practical application gaffers are interested in.Great job thank you.
    I have a 5ft and 7ft Octobank with snapgrids for my Arri S60c sky panels and use them all the time on commercials.(need to get some modern 45deg spigot adaptors).
    I had Andre at Softbox Grids make me some S60 40deg egg crates that fit direct on my S60's they work great as a cheaper option but not the same quality as DOP Choise, but still good and less than half the cost. (contact ex a previous clip of yours)
    Good work on spotting the 48v inlet socket on the Nova, deff needs to be 3pin,I have the Flexion 48v supply box that uses 4x 16volt Vlocks,you can hot swap the batts 1 at a time and also it's a charger for the V-locks. Very handy especially in supermarket shoots where the public still have accession leads.
    Loving the Astera Titans and Heloius tubes,altough the app is a little tricky at times and software updates take a long time to do, ULA have been great at helping with the learning process.A few of us have made magnets for the clips so they can be fixed to metal quickly.
    Other thing i'm impressed with lately is the Apature MC magnetic led's. Great for night shoots and the app is really easy.
    Keep up the good unbiased work, best gear reviews on youtube.
    Agent for TPR in NZ, lot's of stock on hand.

      I use my octo with skypanels off block batteries all the time in shopping centres.
      I did a "Good Guys" commercial recently and I couldn't help but think that 10 years early we did the same job with a generator truck out the front, 75 m of three phase running into the store, and HMIs everywhere.
      Now it's octodomes on wheels running off block batteries.

    Another great review. I bought the Nova after watching your initial review of it but the softbox that comes with it is not really that soft in my opinion especially for interviews so we usually end up putting it through something else to soften it down a bit more which means another c-stand and other arm and then you have to flag the light from hitting the lens and so on....I thought wouldn't it be great if you could just get a bigger softbox for it.

    What's your take on the deep 'parabolic' type modifiers with a front diff? How is that a parabolic anymore? Wouldn't the 'focused' soft light just become an 'unfocused' spread no different from a thinner softbox? It seems to be quite popular with indie filmmakers, but I'm struggling to see how it's any different when used with front diffusion?

    so fixing green shift on light dome ii is w/ magenta filter?? but he said it would be too pink?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому +6

      Yes, the lightest gel is a 1/8th correction, you would need about a 1/16th, which is an impeccable amount of correction.
      I wouldn't bother trying to correct it, I don't, and I use these for my work. But it is something to be aware of incase you are using a light that is slightly green, or you are lighting through glass that is slightly green, (like a car window) then you can get a combination of the two.
      Anything with a hue shift that low, don't bother fixing, you will just run around in circles.
      If it was out by an 1/8th green, and you had another light that was out by a 1/8th pink, the difference would be a 1/4, and that's when you can see it on set.

  • @cemdemirer21
    @cemdemirer21 3 роки тому +2

    Something sparked in my mind while watching the part: green color shift on reflectors.
    Does the green color comes because of the cheap material of the reflector? Or the repetitive layout of the reflector on aputure dome 2 reflects the Led output by multiplying green (that already has in the LED) 7 times because every reflective surface becomes a new light source?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому +3

      Interesting question!
      This is what I've tested, In use with the 300D, 300X or my Forza 500s the light done 2 adds an addition DuV of +0.0011 to both lights according to my spectrometer. That's about half of a 1/8th correction gel. (Nanlite products about the same)
      Regardless of the light, zero additional green on the DoP Choice according to my spectrometer. (Same with Chimera products)
      But..... I think you could well be right with other brands of modifiers, if the reflector didn't transmit all spectrum of the light it could exaggerat flaws in the lights spectrums. Thus not adding green, but removing pink.
      Interesting thought indeed.

    When you reviewed the Aputure Nova did you end up testing out the Aputure softbox? I'm stuck between that or the snapbag. Leaning towards the snapbag as it's a larger source and seems faster to set up, but it is about 2.5x the price. Would be interested to hear an opinion from someone who's tried both.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, and no. Just check the silver isn't a wafer thin layer like a foil. That's another trick to cut costs (used mostly by photographic products). It falls apart very quick.
      But yes you can get lucky, but on the other hand their is some over priced junk. You can spot that junk this way.

    Hey Andrew, have you had any issues with your LED lights turning green over time in use? Heard about this online and wonder if you've seen it with your units.
    Also how do you deal with repairs for LEDs? I bought three low end COB units and two of them have died (won't turn on), and one is probably on its last legs. They weren't as expensive as the other brands but still disappointing nonetheless. Turns out it might be a fault with the design/manufacturing quality as I wasn't the only one to face these issues looking at later reviews of the product. Went to the manufacturer but they won't honour any replacements, so my units are basically now electronic trash. For practical monetary and environmental reasons, I'm trying not to buy and trash gear further than this first round. Wondering if you have thoughts or experiences with this?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому +4

      A lot to answer....
      LEDs turning green over time, I have had this happen on set, after about 12 hours of operation, it was due to poor ventilation design of the lights involved. But as for turning green over years, I have not had this issue.
      The most notable problem I've had with colour shift is in the Skypanels when low on the dimmer. After a few year they have a fedility issue and go pink. This can be overcome by changing the dimmer mode to liner (so it only happens below about 1.5% or running the light in the lower frequency "Low end mode". Where they dim right down to 0.4% with no shift.
      I have had colour shift on LED lights due to cooling fan issues. I have a Forza being replaced because the light has lost green spectrum because the phosphor got cooked, and I have a Dedo that is a few hundred Kelvin off because it's phosphor got cooked when a fan failed.
      But I have not seen LED shift over time due to the age of just the phosphor or the LED, it's usually a background design issue.
      Manufacturers tell me this will start to happen at around 30,000 hours. But that's so far into the future my lights would be obsolete and I should hopefully be retired.
      As for problems with electronics. Across all brands I have a fail rate of 1 in 6. Their are just 1,000s of individual components in the lights now, so even a 0.1% fail rate on those components can stop a light.
      But I find that all issues are usually bedded out in the 1st 12 months.
      I use a company in Melbourne called Technical Art Solutions for all my LED repairs. I try to purchase as much as I can from them because I know he can fix anything he sells.
      But finding a sales company with a repair department is getting impossible these days for economic reasons.

    • @108u9
      @108u9 3 роки тому

      Gaffer & Gear Thanks Andrew for the detailed reply. Much appreciated!
      Good to learn from your experiences with “greening” of LEDs. Will keep an eye out for fan issues. Think you mentioned it in one of the videos about just keeping the fans running in the light’s settings. In cases with Dedo and Nanlite, did the replacements come under warranty? How was the process like?
      Technical Art Solutions sounds like a great vendor to partner. Not sure I have a retailer similar to TAS where I’m at. Have you had the out of warranty third party repairs done with them for LEDs? I suppose they might be more complex or “esoteric” than HMIs and Tungsten units?
      Also hopefully when you retire, it only means more time for UA-cam and annoying the neighbours 😂 Like many, I really enjoy the channel and it’s great to have an experienced gaffer’s detailed take and eye on gear, and working on set 👍
