Here is a very close replica to the famous "Coney Island" chili dog from Michigan. I really enjoyed this dog, and hope you give it a try. I also hoped you have enjoyed my hot dog series, and I will be posting more hot dogs to this playlist in time, but this will be the last one for now. I have other projects I need to get started on. Enjoy :)
I have had a few people ask me about the onion chopper I'm using in this video. You can order it from Amazon.com by following this link: amzn.to/12SxTc7
Ingredients
FOR CHILI
Onions 1 , finely chopped
96% lean ground beef 1 Pound
Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm), chopped
Oil 1 Tablespoon
Chili powder 2 Tablespoon
Cumin powder 1 Tablespoon
Water 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Canned tomato paste 6 Ounce (1 Can)
Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon
Prepared yellow mustard 1 Tablespoon
Worcestershire sauce 1 Tablespoon
Brown sugar 2 Teaspoon
FOR OTHER INGREDIENTS
Frankfurter sausages 6
Hot dog buns 6
Mustard sauce 6 Tablespoon
Chopped onion 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
Directions
MAKING
For Chili
1. Heat oil in a pan and stir in ground beef. Add half of the chopped onions, chopped garlic and let it cook.
2. When the meat changes color and starts to release water, add chili powder and cumin powder. Mix and cook for 3 more minutes.
3. Pour in water and tomato paste, blend it well. Season with salt.
4.Thereafter mix in prepared yellow mustard, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Let it simmer for 5 minutes or until of desired thickness. Keep the chili aside.
For buns and frankfurters
5. Steam the frankfurters for 4 minutes. In the same steamer, place the hot dog buns and steam for a couple of minutes.
SERVING
6. Place a frankfurter in the middle of the bun, cover the sausage with chill. Drizzle some mustard sauce over the top and garnish with chopped onions. Repeat with the rest of the buns and enjoy.

I just made this recipe for my parents and sister while visiting. It was a big hit! Dad is 98 years old, and not always excited about trying new things. However, he unexpectedly had two dogs as well as a side of the chili after we ran out of dogs! So, I heartily recommend this recipe!
Hiro Protagonist That is great! Your dad is 98! Wow, that is fantastic! Glad he and the rest enjoyed the dogs! I love getting feedback like this. Thanks so much :)
Awesome!
Nice! It seems a delicious recipe!
take care of dad bro, in 98 chili can hurt !?
Up here in outer philia area we have a hotdog shop that make s sum excellent sauce like this
Looks really good! Coneys are traditionally cooked on a flattop griddle, not steamed, for what it's worth. I'm no cook, but I'm told that cooking them on a flattop better helps the hot dog retain its "snap" when you bite into it. The buns are steamed.
Lifelong Michigander here, and I loooooooove coneys. Glad to see them get some out-of-state love =)
I'm getting shivers down my spine watching this. I WANT THAT CHILI DOG.
Relatable
Nice job! A little tip for the tomato paste. I find if you open both sides of the can and push the paste out with one of the lids you won’t even have to scoop it out. Love your videos!
That's a great tip! I'll try that next time. Thanks!
being away from home (Detroit) this is super close and very tasty, Detroit style calls for a thinner sauce and sweet onion but man you are damn close!
Thanks, I appreciate the feed back.
@@SmokyRibsBBQ I worked at original Angelo's coney island Flint Michigan in 1978,79 and the coney sauce had lamb heart in it. then beef heart. but, heart is flavor along w/cumin, onions, garlic etc. This looks really good tho!
@@tonywestvirginia If you ask me Angelo's better of course I'm from the Flint area.
I'm from Jackson MI and the Todoroff recipe had about 1/3 of the meat was beef heart. If you can't find that sirloin can be used. It just tweaks it with a slightly "beefier" flavor but this looks so good! Gonna try it. Now if I can only get some Koegels Vienna's.
@@markwilliams2620 I'm in Lansing, You just talked me into Koegels and trying this recipe this weekend.
Oh yeah, I replaced water with Beef Stock the second time, gave it even more amazing flavor. Either way its good.
+Cain Henry That is a great idea! I'll have to try that. Thanks :)
can't believe you actually didnt use stock but water. :)
Cain Henry i did what you said and it was great. I also think next time I will use double the garlic and a good bit of black pepper.
That's what I do as well
I prefer a grilled dog for texture. But I've got my gramps handmade steam box. Authentic
Being from the metro Detroit area, I can attest this recipe is as close as it gets to the top Coney Island chili. Absolutely delicious, put this on some french fries with some cheddar cheese and it!s heaven!!
I'm very picky on the chili sauce, but this recipe here absolutely nails it to perfection on how a coney chili should taste.
Hey brother I bought one of those onion chopper’s at Walmart and I have never look back that is one of the best gadgets in the kitchen we love it we eat alot onions 🧅 in different recipes and things👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Best chili sauce I’ve ever ate also 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Made just a few alterations to this after cooking it a few times. For anyone interested, I added a TBS of paprika, along with a 1/2 TSP of Hungarian paprika. I also added probably around a TSP, maybe a little more of granulated garlic (just do it to taste). Also, I noticed the onion wasn't specified, I used an entire sweet onion, I'm guessing this used a yellow onion from the amount added. The only other thing I did different was to let the chili simmer for about 1 1/2 hours so it thickened even more, but that's completely optional, just go until it's what you like.
The recipe was fine as he did it.
@@Victor-px9bz That's cool man. You don't have to follow recipes exactly and I didn't make any major alterations. Recipes aren't like a fucking religious text, you can alter them to your taste.
So...a completely different recipe...gotcha
@@ryantourney2879 lol exactly
Great recipe, made it completely different. 10/10 would try again.
Made these! Absolutely amazing, only thing I changed was I used beef broth in place of water, and added cayenne pepper. I usually make a similar chili (minus the brown sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire) but add kidney beans, and really get a good sear on the ground beef (think giant smash burger, then broken up) then slice open the franks and sear on cast iron, then assemble and broil in oven topped with chili and cheese. But these steamed buns in your vid are magic! Thanks for sharing!
My late mother use to make a Virginia style Coney dog that had people ask her how she made them as they really liked them. But she never told anyone her recipe and she took it to the grave with her. Watching this brought back memories of her Coney's, and how much I miss her. I will have to give this a try.
Thanks for the Detroit love. Good video. The secret ingredient for Detroit coney sauce is beefheart and the hotdogs should be natural casing grilled on a flat top. The taste of those sear marks and the snap of the natural casing add to the experience.
Here in Portugal hot dogs are not that big of a dealI but since I started watching your recipes,it all changed for me. Great Work.
+Nhexturtle Thank you, and thanks for watching the recipes, I appreciate it :)
I made this and canned it in the winter using 10 pounds of meat. AWESOME!!!!! It made twelve pints. Down to the last couple so I need to do it again soon> . Would like to have a couple of dozen on the shelf for summer cook outs. Thanks for teaching!!!
Thanks for this great recipe! I'm in Mexico and I am a good fan of your videos so glad there people like you sharing this great recipes... I am going to try this right now!
As someone who lives far away from America, I always wanted to know what exactly Chilly dogs are - and today I found out. Thanks for the recipe. Also, great channel, subscribed !
Ranko Zeremski Your welcome, and thank you very much for subscribing :)
I miss Coney Island. My favorite one was past Woodward (east) on 12 mile (I think). National Coney Island has the best coney dogs.
I just made this and added a bit of garlic powder, red pepper, and black pepper to it and increased all the ingredients just a tad to make a bit more and oh my goodness was this ever delicious!! This one is a keeper for sure! Thank you for sharing :)
+Kelly Burress Your welcome. The added ingredients sounds great!
+Smoky Ribs.......... We live about 175 miles north of Flint Michigan.....Everytime we go to Flint we have our coneys.......and buy a 16 oz. cup of their coney sauce and one of their onions...... but when we make them up there, they just don't taste the same.
So, the next time we were in Flint , I asked the coney owner why the onions just didn't taste the same.......His answer was, " We dice them up, and then put them in a pan covered with water and placed them in the cooler overnight. It take any bitterness away.....WOW we tried it, and sure enough, that was the trick we had been missing.

Hey, that's a good tip, thanks :)
As a michigander who's eaten these things for my 39 years, I'm honored. A coney dog is deceptively simple and super yummy.
Yes they are!
Just stumbled across this one Rus while watching some hot dog chili recipes. I could scoff several of these down easy. Looks great
really fundamental-- natural casing hotdog (snap) koegels, dearborn brands. browned not steamed hotdogs, and no sugar in the sauce. Spot on with only the raw onion, american mustard topping. A little south of Michigan, in Cincinnati Ohio, their take on chili is sweeter.
+thelandofopie - - Right. Never steam a hot dog and no sugar.
NEVER NEVER STEAM A HOT DOG..Unless you go down South No tomatoes No sugar Grill Baby Grill
The sugar is to neutralize the acid in the tomatoes.
Just made this and must say it was pretty good. Do note make sure bun size is relative to hot dog size. Wide dogs require another wider buns so you get enough chili and dogs in there

Oh my gosh... I just made this and it came out delicious!!!!!!
I made it a couple of times not too very long ago
This was the 10 chili recipe I tried
The others were too involved and had all these extra ingredients
I just wanted a good old fashion Coney Island
Took some to work
One youngster said
“Tastes like chili”
I said
“Thank you”
That’s what I was shooting for
Not all the extras
It`s currently 2:48 in the am, and I want a couple of these right now ! :-)
So, strangely awake before my alarm clock and somehow ran across this video and my mouth watering. Simple but great job with the video and details in the summary.
You can never be to young or to old to enjoy a great hot dog. Thanks for the recipes this one turned out amazing when I tried it the key is raw onions on the top for that crunch pair this with a great beer or soda if you got kids or don't drink beer and your set.
I still love a good hot dog! Many times I will chose that over anything. Glad you liked the recipe, and thanks so much for your feedback :)
I love a nice chili dog, it's one my favorite comfort foods. Coney Island chili dog is a new one for me, it looks really good!! I'll be checking out the playlist! Have a great weekend! 🔥👍🏻
Thank you and you too!
When in Michigan, head to Flint for a Flint style coney dog, made with a Koegel Vienna.
A good dog with the right topping absolutely rocks.
This Kansas girl gets tired of eating rice here in Indoneisa so I tried this recipe and it tasted great! Everybody liked it. I have to thank you for using ingredients that I could find over here in Asia. xx
I'm glad you liked it, and your very welcome :)
You missed a nice cold Halloween back at home. :)
Indonesia* can't believe I misspelled that. haha I'll be home for xmas though so..yeah!
Why in the world are you in Indonesia?
Asia is where the money is :)
Watching this video at 5am was not a good idea, freaking starving for a chili dog now, btw awesome video my friend, and I subbed too.
***** Thanks so much, and I really appreciate the sub! :)
Same.but not at 5am.
This recipe is so simple compared to all the other recipes and its soo much better :)
+Sam Warren Very simple and delicious. Thanks for watching

I agree
oh my goodness, being from Canada and also growing up in a Mennonite home, I have never tried one of these babies ... having said that, I tried it today and it was absolutely fantastic!!! thank you for being such a good cook N teacher :)
Judi Fotherby I'm glad you liked them, and thank you for the nice comments. I appreciate it much :)
Wow 😳 that's awesome comment you are welcome, where are you from?
Michigan is THE home of the coney dog!
Again, your sauce is absolutely spot-on! Try Martin Rosol's (New Britain Ct... see Capital Lunch) or for the original, go for Koegels viennas (Flint Michigan)
Capitol Lunch the best dogs and sauce anywhere.!!!
@@barbaradalpe1324 @Barbara Dalpe Love their meat sauce, but the Koegel Vienna dog is much better than Martin Rossolls. My buddy from CT had a hard time saying so, but he absolutely agreed. Koegel dogs are freaken amazing! Put capitol lunch sauce on one, and see for yourself :). Side note for Russ; Brother, you did this vid when you were still small. Maybe do another hotdog series now that you have your channel established. People would really love this one and the Rusty Dog especially. Something to think about :)
Now you made me HUNGRY Time for some Chilie dogs you talked me into it 🤓
I love how easy this recipe is . Thank you so much for sharing with us this amazing recipe . I will try this tomorrow !
Rus, AWESOME!! Great easy chili recipe for dogs !! Like the steamed buns. Love all you do!!
Thanks!! 🙌🙌👍

Awesome! You took a hot dog to another level :)
Christina Bako That's one of the good things about the internet. It doesn't have a 3 week lifecycle like mainstream media or the attention span of a fruitful, as most people do now days.
Thanks for the recipe! I just tried winging one since I've been tasked with coming up with a chili sauce recipe for work next week... It wasn't bad, but not what I was looking for. I think this recipe will be closer to what I was trying to accomplish. Thanks!
If you want a really good hotdog chili recipe then check out another hotdog video I did about 6 years ago. I never would give that recipe away, but I did on that video. Really good chili. I think you will agree. More steps and ingredients than this one, but well worth it. ua-cam.com/video/p4E4RK1ZF9A/v-deo.html
That is one great tasting chilli dog!! Thanks for sharing!
it’s definitely Detroit style, need natural casings for the crunch tho.....
It's a Hebrew national hotdog, all natural casing. Best hotdogs too imo.
Detroit has the BEST coney dogs
I would love to try one, one of these days :)
I would think Coney Island NY has the best Coney dogs
Chicago has the best Coney Hot Dogs ! On a warmed Poppyseed bun topped with the Coney Sauce, onions, Stadium Brown Mustard and a Garlic Dill Pickle slice and some Tomatos if you want.Back in the day before food coaches, they rode bicycles with the hot box in front like the old ice cream benders did. They drove up the streets and park and sell their Coney Dogs with a sm. bag chips, and a can of pop for $1.50 ! Best Coney Dogs and fixins ever ! 🐺🐾
@@SmokyRibsBBQ in my opinion the best hotdogs were the chillidogs were the ones at Ann's place down on tumbling Creek in Saltville VA 24370 there will never be another miss Ann or her daughter Miss Jenny Stanley god rest their souls
I used to go to American, National and Onassis Coney Island joints after partying and just for lunch in Detroit. They are the bomb! Any other 'chili dog' I have had is simply horrible. Never liked them until I lived in Detroit and was convinced to eat a Coney Island and fell in love. I don't live in Michigan anymore and still refuse to eat anything described as a chili dog. I will try this recipe.
Whoa Baby!!!!
We have a winner
Yours is the 10th chili recipe I’ve tried
Some of the previous recipes were pretty involved
But none of them had the flavor profile I was looking for

Fantastic chili recipe.
I agree
omg why did i watch this while hungry!!! that looks epic, thanks for the walk through sir i will be trying this.
Joshua Malott Thank you, and your welcome. Enjoy :)
I made this a couple hours ago. Came out great. Was a lot of effort making the chili for it. (Perhaps I'll get better with practice?). The steaming of the hot dogs and buns was awesome! Better than ever before. To save time though I may just open a can of prepared hot dog chili and just heat it up. Not sure yet. Your recipe tasted delicious, but took much longer than simply heating up a can. Thank you for sharing this with all of us who watched.
Bar bq ribs
I wanted to be able to make my own chili thanks to you
I now can
And it ain’t no McCormits or one of the chili pack mixes
Or chipotle?
That’s another
It’s fine if you like
But I like mine just the way you made it
I’m gon try that Dutch oven chili recipe
Same recipe I use! I’ll substitute tomato paste with chopped fresh tomatoes. Also, use a hand blender to break it down further. If you barbecue throw some wieners in for about an hour. Yum!! Thanks for the video. 🌭 ❤️
In Detroit we use the skinnier hot dogs that snap also the dogs r fried not steamed but this looks good also
Gotta have Koegel dogs!!!!
Johan Aharon Z Hot dogs that "snap"???
Gerri Stratton if they snap it means they have a natural casing. It pops when you bite into it like a regular sausage would. Most hot dogs at the store don't have the skin on them. It's an old-fashioned term.
Tile by Tony Illiterate much?
NotSnarl Who and how so.
im going to try this recipie . MOUTHWATERING !!!
You're a genius ...hello from chile ...I have waited a long time for these subtitled videos
Anyone else just watch these type of videos because theyre hungry af, and then they spend the whole thing drooling on their screen. But then they get hungrier. And it becomes a cycle?
... no?
Is the sugar necessary, does it make it taste sweet?
No it doesn’t make it taste sweet the point of the sugar is to cut down on the acidity of the tomato paste. In my spaghetti sauce recipe I put in some brown sugar also trust me it’s amazing.
Wow!! That looks super delicious. I’ll definitely be making this. Thanks for the great video and recipe. 👍
Coney Island is in New York, Brooklyn to be exact, I was born a few miles away. Good recipe, great chili and dawg. Rock On Rus.
Your right Sal, but the Coney Island dog is from Michigan (Deroit) and surrounding areas. Thanks brother ;)

Been searching for a good looking chili forever and this is what comes to my head when I think of chili. No bs beans or thick tomatoes. Going to have to give this a try with a couple twist, but chili looks banging! Ima have to tried these with some fries as well 🙌🏻
I tried your recipe and it was amazing! I even steamed the buns and OMG!!!! Thank you
Your recipe is right "finely chopped onions" not like the picture. if you have a processor then hit them in the processor then put them on fairy thick!!!!
The "chili' is supposed to be beef heart, but since it's just me and my wife, we use ground chuck. with onions, salt, pepper, cumin, beef stock absolutely no tomato sauce or catsup.
No Tomatoes were maimed hurt or killed in the making of a coney. Whoever told you tomato paste, tell them to get out of your kitchen and carry themselves on back to Ohio! We don't cotton to those kind around here! And we don't care how you did it down there! Use safety when cooking so never ever let an Ohio State fan into your kitchen. Everything will be red. Keep them out even if you have to use sticky paper. Go Blue!!
I've been eating coneys since around 1954 when I was 2. I told my mom to throw away my bottle and throw out the other food because from now on we are eating coneys for breakfast, lunch and dinner and might even have coney pie for desert. She laughed at me and wiped my drool and put me back in the bed!!!!
I think she ate the rest of my coney.........don;t trust your coneys with your mama. just words of experience. I'll bet she's from Ohio!!!
So the owner wanted to sell the Jackson Coney Island but the city told him No!! Square Biz!!!!
Kids today will never know the Dome or The Root Beer stands and eventually The Parlour
Brace yourselves! Sonic fan comments are coming
I have really enjoyed this series! Thanks for posting them.
You are very welcome, and thank you so much for watching :)
We don't have a real "hot-dog culture" in Italy, so this was absolutely enlightening. Cheers dude! Oh, I apreciated also the other vids you made! Thanks again!
Aren't Coney Dog sauces all based off of Greek sauce...which HAS TO include cinnamon and cloves as background flavors ? This looks just like hamburger chili sauce to me.
We make BBQ sauce much like his chili sauce in the Greek northeast USA..He is probably from down South but hey to each his own .It still tastes like good BBQ
Yes, it depends what style you like. I love both styles. A nice Greek style coney is delicious. Its got great depth and nice kick.
Not sure what you guys are talking about, the sauce is basic bolognaise sauce with just chilipowder added... wee todd amewicans
you are correct.also in rochester ny. the greeks AKA nick tahou also use a chilli oil that you ca see floating on top of the double boiler.his construction of the hot is wrong.musterd first-onions next then top off with sauce.
I'm actually from PA...and we had a great chili dog place in my hometown but it was run by Greeks and they use the Mediterranean spices.
I've watched a ton of chili dog recipe videos, and this is by far the best one I've seen yet. Great looking recipe, and I will be trying this one out soon. Thank you and God bless!
There's plenty of variations of Coney Dogs and this is one I would definitely try! Great job Rusty!

Thank you Smokey did this recipe last Saturday night watching some college football with my new girl! We both loved it! Thanks again brother
That recipe looks absolutley mouth watering. Im gonna try it. And steaming the buns. Ive never done that. 👍😃
Great job!! In Detroit we use fried natural skin Dearborn brand hotdogs! Either way, you did us justice! Spot on toppings too, everyone always wants to add stuff instead of keeping it the original! Great job from the D!
Or Keogels, Dearborn are good but Koegels are king.
the coney dogs were skinny and called 'RED HOTS" by my dad.. (Coney Island Kalamazoo MIchigan)... I was served by the original owner for many years, now the son runs the restaurant, and the charm of eating 'in' there is unsurpassed, the people were always kind and friendly, the building is historic type so it is like going back in time!
+1besieged I would love to try an authentic Coney Island one day. Thanks for the comments and for watching. I appreciate it :)

I cover my meat and onions/garlic with water and simmer for 2 hours then add my spices and cook another hour to cook out water. Delicious. Interesting bun concept never seen that before. 👍
Love these!!! You should write a book! Up north in NYS where I am from In the heart of the Adirondacks we call them Michigan's, or Michigan Hotdogs. There are two different varieties. The main rule is a true "Michigan" does not have chili powder or cumin. In Port Henry Ny "Gene's" is the place in the summer, the sauce is sweet and savory, Michigan's are always served just like a coney dog with mustard and raw onions. Further north in Plattsburgh it was Clare and Carl's this was a more spicy sauce that seemingly breaks all the rules calling them "Texas red hot Michigan's" Frank's redhot seems to be the source of the heat. I have both of those recipes I'd love to share them if you want to expand your series even more. I also have the original dirty John's hotdog recipe from 1919 Glensfalls NY.
Couldn't wait to try it....my family loved it....sooo looking forward to more recipes. ..thanks
