  • A short documentary about the golden age superhero Spacehawk and his creator Basil Wolverton. Spacehawk was a short lived but excellent sci-fi adventure. Basil Wolverton went on to work on other comics for Marvel, DC Comics, and Mad Magazine.

    This is so creepy for me, because as a child I wrote and drew a "series" (about 5-10 comic books) of a sci-fi character called "Space Lord" who was a fighter pilot in space. His main enemy was another space fighter pilot called "Space Hawk" who looked just like this guy (except not as well drawn). Extra creepy, Space Lord's spaceship was yellow, resembling what I see in this video.

    When I watched this, something was wrong with the audio. No voice over whatsoever, but I watched the whole thing an awe anyway. Basil Wolverton was a singular talent with amazing creativity, and you captured it perfectly with visuals and music alone. Hope to return and hear what you have to say as well. I just discovered your productions and am enjoying them very much. Kudos.

      During the war rationing was very wide spread. The black market was large. All rubber products had to serve the war effort. So tires was a major item in black marketing. I even read an anthology of noir/pulp style police stories set in Detroit were a tire smuggling was a component of a story.

    As a youth I found a cool collected addition of Basil's work which I cherrished and which inspired me to illustrate my own comics. Loved his line work. Amazing. Then Star wars came out further fueling my interest for Basil's space hawk, which I still own today, and sci fi in general. Admire all kinds of stuff because something about the fanfuckingtastic simplicity of his artwork made me realize a lot of things about our complex society. Keep it simple stupid comes to mind when I think about life. This guy's drawings always made me feel he had been there done that. Even though much more graphically sophisticated artists with more advanced approaches tackled the same subject matter. Thanks Basil Wolverton for all time.

    I am loving these "Lost Heroes" features. Have you considered that these might be expanded into a great documentary film or anthology series? You have to know that there are artists who would love to speak about how these may have inspired them. There is a glut of Marvel, DC, and modern indy stuff, but this is nearly virgin territory.

    The influence and tremendous graphic power of Wolverton's work put him in a class of his own. Fantagraphics (bless them) has published a couple of deluxe omnibus volumes of his work. My own earliest memories of him, back in the day, were from Mad Magazine.

    I love your videos so far! So much of Golden Age superhero fare is dismissed as crude and lackluster, and I've been guilty of that myself. I gotta hunt down this guy's work.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  8 років тому +1

      Hi toonbat! Thanks for watching! There's some gems out there, but most of it isn't good. Comic books was still a new field. They didn't know what they were doing. They had to fill 64 pages back in the early 40s. That wasn't an easy task. Also, pay for comic book artists and writers was awful. That didn't attract the cream of the crop.
      As for Wolverton, he's the rare exception. His Spacehawk can be found (for free) as the digital comics museum or comic book plus websites. Look up Novelty Press (publisher) and Target Comics (title).

      His stuff has been reprinted over the years in various forms. Search the net or go to a good size comic shop and they may have stuff. I think Dark Horse and Fantagraphics have been the most recent to publish reprints although there are probably others.

    Did Wolverton get influenced by Fletcher Hanks? The thing about Wolverton, in my opinion, is that his draughtsmanship was HIGHLY STYLIZED.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  7 років тому +2

      Hi Louis! Hanks and Wolverton's name get thrown together a lot. I think Hanks got into comics a few years before Wolverton. I've never came across Wolverton naming Hanks as an inspiration. Even in the comic book world, Hanks is not well known. I suspect that both actually found inspiration in the work of Salvador Dali and other artists in the Surrealist movement. Dali was big in the 1930s...he was a "Rock Star" and his work was well publicized.

    MY OWN THOUGHTS ON THIS CLASSIC VILLAIN WHO IS CALLED (SPACE-HAWK)
    Now I think this classic character villain guy (SpaceHawk) might be interesting to make a comeback in some way, and so maybe a story could be written for him to make his first reappearance in a cartoon show series; Such as maybe in the cartoon show series of (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXIES) & to add it might be great to see the classic hero make his appearance in a cartoon show series of (SPIDER-MAN) in a number of new episodes, and also to add maybe even give the old classic villain SpaceHawk a new look for his appearance in this new age of entertainment.
    Plus to add I imagine the classic villain from the old ages might be a good new enemy for the hero StarLord to become his new appointment, and what imagine how is in a outer-space spacecraft fight; But I imagine this classic character villain from some other different set of ComicBook stories villain known as (SpaceHawk) could make his appearance in MARVEL entertainment, and so I imagine him suddenly attacking StarLord when the silly hero is alone without his team in a spacecraft being attacked by SpaceHawk, and to add I imagine the MARVEL version of the villain could look completely different, and also to add that the previous classic original version it was originally seen in different ComicBook stories set it was originally created for in.
    Or maybe the classic golden age villain SpaceHawk could maybe make his reappearance in a renewal version of the former old ComicBooks stories, and it could be seen in a cartoon show series that could be shown on the broadcast network of AMAZON Prime; An I imagine it wouldn’t be much of a entertaining show without the hero SpaceLord, and I imagine in a new story it could be portrayed with allot of outer-space battles go on in a dimensional realm where science & magic coexist perfectly together, and to add I imagine that the new version of the villain SpaceHawk could have a favorite spacecraft that he has named Ms.Condor which he uses for special occasions, and also to add the classic hero’s name is no longer SpaceLord but instead his new hero name is SunLord.
    Now the reason why I imagine the classic hero’s new name title is SunLord in the new story for the cartoon show series of it; Is because the hero is filled with so much hope in his heart, and to add he is a very big dreamer that his Ora shines like that of the suns when he is facing evil enemies in the darkest areas of outer-space, and also to add his Ora shines like the light of eighty LightHouses in one in the darkest places on the lands of any planets in certain places.

    Outstanding work. Thanks for this Wolverton retrospective. I was aware of his affiliation with Armstrong's cult, but had no idea that he was actually an elder in the church. • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Fred! When I do these videos, I try to find out the motivations that made the artists/writers who they were. In Wolverton's case, religion and location made him an outsider from his contemporaries. Both had an impact on his artistic direction that made his style very unique and interesting. As for Worldwide Church of God, I went down that rabbit hole doing research...it's an interesting story. They grew into one of the first mega-churches and splintered apart after Armstrong's death. The big crash came when the "End of Times" date that Armstrong gave came and went. That started a lot of internal bickering and many broke off and began their own congregations. The WCoG is still around, and I came across websites for at least 4 other churches that claim to have roots with them.
