I bought a collection of Basil's space hawk when I was 10 I'm now 7000+ years old and still think he's one of the best.

Wow, I see so much of his influence in R Crumb’s drawing

definitely ... and the funny thing is: some other underground creators seem to have more in common with Wolverton than with Crumb

I've read that Wolverton worked through the mail, which eventually gave him a lot of leeway. There's a real intensity to his later Marvel horror comics, like the oft-cited "Brain Bats of Venus" and quite a few of those had unique, nightmarish plots. There's a period in the 50's where artists like Wolverton, Bill Everett and Jack Cole were relatively unleashed and produced some powerful and dark work. Then, of course, the Comics Code arrived, and broke up the party.

Wow....really loving the look of the Wolverton Sci Fi which I hadn't really looked at before.
I think this video is going to cost me some money!!!

yeah, some of the panels in the Space Hawk comic look like they could haven been drawn by Moebius. Maybe he influenced Moebius as well as Crumb.

Love that Wolverton! It's sort of fitting that he needed reference for the more mundane figures, although few people at the time would've had access to collected Flash Gordon examples with which to discover his minor swipes. I need to get this Creeping Death book. I've got The Original Art Of... and the Weird Worlds Artist Edition (lucked out and got a copy of that giant tome for about $30), but those are more art oriented only. And then volume 2 this summer?
Have you read the old Herbie comics reprinted by Dark Horse? They're almost the flipside of Basil. The writing is better, but the art is utterly pedestrian, which adds to the surreality.

no... haven't peeked into Herbie. I guess it's what you said about the lacking art what's kept me away.

Hey there! You may have recognized my absence in the comment section recently which I want to apologize for since it is always a pleasure to watch & discuss afterwards. I have exams ahead and had to do some preparation and studying. But there should always be time to watch your videos. Why haven't I seen that morbus gravis video?? Damn, youtube!
Have to get the wolverton bible as well, especially because of your annotation regarding the price reduction for the foreign edition.
Always found the similarities between Hanks and Wolverton striking (which as you have shown, is particularly conspicuous in spacehawk). But wolverton's art is undoubtedly far superior. I remember when I first stumbled upon those faces he drew, the pure definition of underground. Makes me jealous of the trading cards comickkrakk showed in a video, perhaps one of the few presentations that actually fit the purpose of these gimmicks (with memorable motifs!). He would have deserved earlier recognition and reputation and I wouldn't have thought that he was rejected this often. Although in regards of the time, it is quite understandable (take crumb for an instance).
I can absolutely recommend one of my recent acquisitions: "The Artist Himself: Rand Holmes Retrospective" by Patrick Rosenkranz. Holmes is one of my favorite underground artists, as I think he was particularly talented in delivering a realistic, vivid and yet distinct vibe which would have allowed him to surpass the realms of underground comics fairly far. It is however doubtful if he would have truly wanted that (the closest we ever got probably being "Star Whores"). I like Rosenkranz's wealth of detail a lot and yet I can see your point. In this case however, he also elaborates on the relationship to Raymond Martin and the german publication with the Volksverlag. I think it would be exaggerating to say that Underground Comix have ever been sufficiently praised or even acknowledged. Though if, the slightest proponent wave could be registered, then it is attributable to Raymond Martin for introducing us to the broad world of undergroound. Wildly considered trash by the majority, it is fascinating that the movement kept steady and he was able to bring it here in the first place. Although with the digitization the demand weakens, in modern times it also guarantees the preservation of
independent titles (at least for now), which is why it stands to reason that the appreciation could now have reached a new level. Holmes was not blameless for problems arising with the german output making promises that he couldn't fulfill. Perhaps, I ran off-topic but I would strongly advise you to give it a go.
Now it is time to catch up the videos I have missed :-)!

you're forgiven, my friend (where's the pope-emoji with the blessing gesture?)... Abitur, I suppose? Have you skipped one class? well in my case I still have to find some intelligent (but not too intelligent) questions for the mündliche Prüfung. Speaking of private news: my relocation/transfer is achieved, so my life will be much easier after this summer :) But it probably will affect my ytube-output for a while, because I have to focus on my relocation.
Yes, I do have the Holmes book... but I still haven't read more than a fraction of that one, shame on me. I'm binging through the kayfabes - channel instead (in the unlikely case you haven't been aware of this channel, well: go check it out ... but only after you have learned your stuff, because the two eat time)

maybe it's too late and you have already ordered your bible in serbian or finnish... but I sort of regret it (a bit) not having waited until for an affordable priced English edition. Now I'm trying to make sense of the short summaries in Spanish that accompany the gorgeous illustrations of Wolverton ... my knowledge of the old testament lasts just as far as Adam, Eve and Noah, after these it gets really spotty & I often have to scratch my head and can't make "sense" of the pictures.

on the contrary... but you have to separate the man from his comics
