Thank you for watching New Puppy Tips Surviving The First 24 Hours. In the comments below, tell me when you’re getting your puppy. Or if you already have him, how did the night go?
I’m getting my puppy in two weeks he’s a all black miniature schnauzer but he is my cousins puppy so I’ve been seeing him and he is soooo cute and calm he always just sleeps on me it’s to cute
.thanks for this! really helpful. i somehow managed the first week with archie and he is a toy poodle, 6 weeks old. even though i have watched your previous videos, i still made mistakes. the 1st night was surprisingly easy as he just dozed off to sleep on the tiled floor. i prepared a space for him in my room where i can keep him because i am sharing the house with a colleague. he was slightly potty trained too by the breeder using pee pads, which made the night easier for me. come second and third day, i realized that this is not a good. so i started training him to sleep in the crate and wake up every two hours the entire night to let him pee or potty. right now he is doing great and i don't need to use the pee pads anymore coz he knows where to go. i feel a sense of achievement whenever i see him pee or potty where i want him to do it. and thanks for your help! i wish you the best of luck and looking forward for more videos.
We are getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel on August 14th. A good friend did the 30 days training and highly recommended you. My 11 year old daughter and I've been binge watching your channel today. We are very excited and very nervous. Thanks for all the tips
Getting my puppy next month! She'll be 12 weeks old when I get her and I am excited to meet her! Gonna watch a lot of your videos so I can make sure I can be the best pet parent I can be!
We don't recommend them. They become a chew toy, and often lead to a lifetime of accidents, specifically on rugs or other soft surfaces. Even in cold or snowy weather, you can teach your dog to go potty outside.
I'll be getting a mini Aussiedoodle puppy at the end of August! I grew up with an older dog in my house, but this is the very first puppy I will be caring for on my own. I'm extremely nervous, but I've been doing a lot of research to help me prepare. Thank you for all of your amazing tips!

We picked up our 8wk old Cavoodle puppy (Honey) yesterday. The 1st night wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be, honey slept in an expen next to my daughters bed, apart from waking at 3.30am for a potty break, she slept all night.
We have a one year old Dalmatian and are getting a 9 week old next Saturday! Fight crazy with crazy! The energy level and is insane, the personality and intelligence amazing! We are now Dal people for life!
I just brought our puppy home. I noticed she was whining a lot. Even though the shelter manager said she hadn’t eaten breakfast, when I got her home and offered her food, she sniffed it a few times. She did lap up a little water. She’s 12 weeks. I started making my lunch and she started calming down in a few minutes. By the time I finished eating, she was curled up sleeping beside my recliner. Thank you for all the videos! Question... I'm flying to pick up my puppy from the breeder who is meeting me at the airport. I'll have a couple of hours before we take off for home and can take the puppy out of the crate. But once on the 2.5 hour flight home, the crate must remained closed. Finally, we'll have an hour's drive home. Ideas to make this less stressful and ideas for what to use in the crate (pee pad)? Appreciate any wisdom!

We rescued an Australian Shepherd/ Blue Heeler mix (possibly more 😆) 2 weeks ago. He is 10 weeks old. He is doing well in his crate at night, but naps on a dog bed in the living room during the day. I just found your channel tonight. Thanks!
So I’m picking up a 17 week old tomorrow. All liter mates gone, but he’s been with the parents. This whole time. Any tips that differ from the norm due to his age and circumstance?
He might have a slightly longer transition time into his new home, so be patient with him. Once he settles you'll want to start work on positive and slow socialization, especially if he didn't get it where he was. Once he settles in and you start training, he might have a slightly longer attention span than a younger puppy so that's good!
Hi! We are getting a new puppy tomorrow. We have two dogs now 4 and 8. Both sleep in our bed but puppy will have two kennels one by our bedside and one attached to his long term area (as we work) is this ok?
Good luck! Remember to be patient! Here is a great video full of tips and tricks on how to train two puppies at once: ua-cam.com/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/v-deo.html
I'm so happy I stumbled across your channel I watched your video about potty training when I first bought my English bulldog home now I just brought my second one home and I have to tell you I followed your schedule. My Niko who is now 1 years old n Nina is 11 weeks has not had an accident n was fully potty trained in a week. I'm so thankful for all your videos. 🐶🐶♥️♥️🐾🐾
Hello. I’m getting my puppy about the middle of December. I’ve already been “nesting” as I bought some interactive toys and chew items. Additionally I just picked up a crate for him. This is my 2nd pup(the last time I had a dog was about 15 years ago) I’m really looking forward to using the trainings from your video.

Your videos are so thorough and helpful…thank you! But are all breeds the same? Seems not. How should a new done owner adapt to the differences in recommendations among breeds?
That's a great question! That's actually part of our newest project - Dream Dogs! We've started deep-diving into different breeds of Dream Dogs and will continue to release UA-cam videos regarding each breed. You can also get more personalized advice with one of our certified dog trainers in our online course, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
Hello Michele, I'm not sure if you can reply to my question quickly but it's alright, I can wait. My question is, where do I put my puppy to sleep, sometimes I see videos that say that I should put them on a plastic crate, but some say use those black tall metal crate, which crate should I use for the puppy until they're old enough for the dog bed? Thanks!
We recommend either the plastic crate or the metal crate. Most puppies find the plastic one a little more comfortable. It muffles the sounds better. Here's the one we like: howtotrainadreamdog.com/plastic-crate
Hey Michelle, what if we don’t have access to outside? We’re in a flat 6 floors up and she is due her second vax in a few weeks, are pads acceptable then?
It's really important for your dog's development to have exposure to the outside world before vaccinations are complete. This video can help you! ua-cam.com/video/vybaTk4wdGA/v-deo.html

@@HowToTrainADreamDog It really is! I lost my precious Lancashire Heeler unexpectedly due to anesthesia complications just short of her 13th birthday in July this year. My home has been so empty without her. Thank you for all you do!
We suggest you stop at places where other dogs are not likely to have been. Don't let your pup lick or eat anything off the ground. Many puppies are so overwhelmed by the change that they sleep the whole way!
So just brought my puppy home Sunday. I have a question about puppy fussing. I have her playpen set up in the living room / dining area . So I sat down to have a quick bite and I placed her in her playpen with toys and a Kong. She pitched a fit and started screaming at the top of her lungs and started to beat up on her bed by pulling on it with her mouth and biting at her snuggle puppy. She did settle down after about almost 10 minutes or so. Is that too long? She had already been outside. We hit already done a practice of sit commands. I know she was just mad because she wasn't out with me. Just wanting to know the time frame on how long they can fuss without it getting too extreme.
We will be picking our puppy up in 7 weeks. We will have a 4-hour car ride home. I am wondering about the puppy needing a potty break. I have been told they should not be allowed to be out in public grass areas until they are fully vaccinated, so I am at a loss as to how to let the little guy go to the bathroom.
If your puppy sleeps, don't wake him. If he wakes up, definitely stop for a potty break and use a leash even if he is not used to it. Find a spot that seems to be unpopular with the other dogs and have him take a potty break. You can make it quick and intervene if the puppy is licking or eating the grass or dirt.
My puppy has come to me malnourised and with fleas. The fleas have been treated and I have a schedule for improving her weight. I messed up 1st night with the crate. Totally rocking toilet training. Tomorrow I'll have to start with the crate. She cried and barked and git really worked up and I gave in because of the state she is in. Ugh.
It's great that you're working on crate training but be sure to take it at her pace so she's not stressed. She has a lot going on in that little body so you don't want to add to her stress. This video can help you get started. Just take it at her pace and if you need to use a puppy pen at first, that's an option while she gets used to her crate. ua-cam.com/video/rnMFXmzh_Cc/v-deo.html
we just received our westie puppy yesterday. We had a decent night. She slept from 8-11, then after some play time slept until 3:45. She has been up ever since until 10 and is now napping. 50-50 on pee training, 100% on poop so far. She likes to run every where and it’s hard to keep her contained due to our house structure being open. Biting a lot, have chew toys for her. Night 2 will be here sooner than later. I hope we are headed in the right direction.
Hi Joe! Kudos to you for preparing ahead of time. Thank you for the feedback! Have you considered our online course? Here is the link for more info: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
Excellent video. You seem to be very knowledgeable about this subject. My wife and I are about to buy our first puppy in early 2022. She wants a small, cute little puppy. She got scammed a couple of weeks ago by someone claiming to have puppies for sell. They asked for money in advance, and she sent it to them. I’m doing research now, trying to prepare as best as possible so that everything will go well for us, and the puppy.
Oh no, so sorry to hear that. This video might be a good one for you as it talks about what questions to ask potential breeders. ua-cam.com/video/qOXL-DGE6qs/v-deo.html
We get our puppy in 1 month! You mentioned that puppies can only hold their bladder for 2-3 hours. Does this mean you should take them out to go potty every 2-3 hours, even during the night?
They can hold their bladder longer when they sleep. Most puppies need to go out a few times at night at first, but within a month or two of coming home they are sleeping through the night.
i’m a bit confused and concerned about potty training before puppy has all three vaccinations. We live in the country and our yard is not fenced, so we never know what other dogs or wildlife has wandered through the yard. We pick up our brand new puppy in seven weeks. Potty training our previous dogs we always lived in a house with a fenced yard. I’m not a fan of potty training with puppy pads and you say you’re against them and yet everyone says not to let a brand new puppy into an unfenced yard before all their vaccinations because of the threat of Parvo. I’d love to know how to approach this dilemma.
You might want to use an outdoor puppy pen to establish a potty spot. This can also keep other critters out. This video has some good advice for you! ua-cam.com/video/vybaTk4wdGA/v-deo.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you for your response, and yes I've watched that video but I didn't feel it answered my question. We will be fencing in a small pen area for puppy, but from everything I've read that does not preclude Parvo from already being in whatever area of the yard we would choose since I understand Parvo can live in the ground for up to a year.
Picking up a 13 week Labrador. We will be taking a 15 hour drive home. Aside from stopping every 2 hours for a bathroom break, does anyone have some advice? Also given the fact he is 13 weeks is training him any different than if he was 8 weeks?
This video on car travel will help you. Other than a slightly bigger bladder (which means a little longer time in between potty breaks) the training suggestions will be the same for a slightly older dog. ua-cam.com/video/npvb4dk8hxs/v-deo.html
Just received our Puppy, Luna. She is a German Shepherd/Golden retriever mix and is 10 weeks old. Vet appt is scheduled. Lana, my SD, was very welcoming but Rufus, Maltese, is a wee bit jealous. Reese, rescue, is not sure what the hell this thing is. I am ready to start training.... in a couple of months lol Gonna just let her be a puppy.
Congrats on your new pup! I'd start training as soon as possible as this is the most critical time to teach the foundation skills. Waiting to start training can lead to bad habits forming that are harder to break (both by you and puppy). I talk about this common myth about waiting to train in this video ua-cam.com/video/CDCQjvWvjVk/v-deo.html
We have a meet and greet with an 8 week old Basenji mix scheduled this weekend. Am I a crazy person for bringing a puppy home with a 15 month old toddler in the house?

I don't have a garden. When bringing the puppy home, the only possible potty spot would be a field of grass outside my home that many other dogs use. My puppy won't have had all the vaccinations yet. I guess puppy pads will be my only option right?
You'll want to use a grass patch outside, potentially surrounded by a puppy pen so that no other dogs can contaminate your puppy's spot. So long that we teach our puppies to go potty outside, they will learn that that is the desired spot. Pads inside may potentially encourage your puppy to relieve themselves indoors.
We hope this video was helpful, and congrats on your new puppy! Here is our free New Puppy Starter Kit to get you started off on the right paw! howtotrainadreamdog.com
I am bringing my 8 weeks old cavapoochon puppy home in 2 days. It's an 8-9 hours car drive with small breaks. What would work best for my 8 weeks old? Crate or car seat? Also temperature here is in minus with Amber snow warning. How can I introduce him to his potty spot when we arrive at night and it's freezing out there 😫

Love your videos and thank you so much for them! Generally speaking, while in their crates during their first nights, do puppies prefer white noise (sound of a fan) or actual soft piano music to help settle their anxiety?
We ahve 2 videos on traveling with a pup that can help you with this ua-cam.com/video/l4mzh8WMcDQ/v-deo.html and this one too ua-cam.com/video/npvb4dk8hxs/v-deo.html
I have my corgi puppy now and she’s the best puppy ever although I don’t know how to leash train her. She sits or lays down and doesn’t walk with me properly. And she isn’t as food motivated as I thought..maybe it’s her age, she’s going to be 8 weeks old tomorrow and I’m trying to train her a lot so she knows from the beginning
Good for you for getting started early! You can focus on some easier tasks like putting on the collar, crate & pen training, and potting training during this early stage. Walking on leash involves a lot of training and time for your puppy to develop- all of this and more is laid out for you in sequential order based on your pup's development in our course, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/. Keep up the good work!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you so much! We’ve been working on it since day 1 and maybe it’s because it’s her first few days as well. Cause she eats but doesn’t accept treats just yet. But yes I will take your advice! I’ve been watching this channel for a while ☺️☺️
We are going to get our second dog - a golden retriever pup. I am hoping our beautiful labrador will be accepting. He has lots of doggy friends already. I get to pick my puppy on Saturday, and will get her after next Friday🐶❤️
We rescued an Australian Shepherd/ Blue Heeler mix (possibly more 😆) 2 weeks ago. He is 10 weeks old. He is doing well in his crate at night, but naps on a dog bed in the living room during the day. I just found your channel tonight. Thanks!
That is awesome!
I love your content and sub. Got my pup 🐶 today.
Super helpful and well put together. Thank you very much!
Wow!! Thank you SO much, Luis! We really appreciate you and your kindness. 🐶❤️ Thank you for watching and we're here to help with your new puppy!
Hi! We are getting a new puppy tomorrow. We have two dogs now 4 and 8. Both sleep in our bed but puppy will have two kennels one by our bedside and one attached to his long term area (as we work) is this ok?
That sounds like a pretty good set up but your new puppy will be the one to tell you for sure!
We are getting a Sheepadoodles,, 2 pups on coming Sunday ,Jun,12. They'll be 6 weeks old. Such an excitement!

Hello Michele, I'm not sure if you can reply to my question quickly but it's alright, I can wait. My question is, where do I put my puppy to sleep, sometimes I see videos that say that I should put them on a plastic crate, but some say use those black tall metal crate, which crate should I use for the puppy until they're old enough for the dog bed? Thanks!
We recommend either the plastic crate or the metal crate. Most puppies find the plastic one a little more comfortable. It muffles the sounds better. Here's the one we like: howtotrainadreamdog.com/plastic-crate
Thanks!@@HowToTrainADreamDog

1hour 30 min car ride on way home so can he be let outside at service stations etc on way home at 10 weeks ? Thanks
We suggest you stop at places where other dogs are not likely to have been. Don't let your pup lick or eat anything off the ground. Many puppies are so overwhelmed by the change that they sleep the whole way!
Our first night with 8week old Airedale. Put in crate cried on and off. Now fast asleep. Didn’t go back to check on him.

I think you'll find this video helpful for your question! ua-cam.com/video/2gSQe2hTrE4/v-deo.html
Thanks, watching it now!

Hi Michelle. I would be very grateful if you could give me some clues on how to introduce a new puppy to my older dog please?
Cheers FionA

Hey Fiona! We have a great blog for you to read. Here is the link: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/how-to-introduce-new-puppy-to-current-dog/
Thank you Michelle! The video has many great tips!!!
Thank you for your feedback! Stay tuned!
My pup is coming home the weekend of the 3rd July!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you for that. She's actually doing really well, put herself in the crate twice yesterday. 🩷
My baby girl comes home on July 7th!
The countdown is on!! We are so excited for you 😍
My husband and I are getting an 8 week old corgi at the beginning of August. Thank you for all this invaluable information!
we just received our westie puppy yesterday.
You may benefit from a puppy pen! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy_pen_indoor

My puppy should come to our home on 20 th July.
How exciting!!
i’m a bit confused and concerned about potty training before puppy has all three vaccinations.
My first night was uh, not fun for either of us 😂 But he was able to get to sleep and in the end he’s already getting better with the crate
It sounds like you guys are figuring things out! Keep up the good work!

I don't have a garden. When bringing the puppy home, the only possible potty spot would be a field of grass outside my home that many other dogs use. My puppy won't have had all the vaccinations yet. I guess puppy pads will be my only option right?
By field I mean tiny field...
@@HowToTrainADreamDog unfortunately I can't put a puppy pen on public property 😥

Love your videos and thank you so much for them! Generally speaking, while in their crates during their first nights, do puppies prefer white noise (sound of a fan) or actual soft piano music to help settle their anxiety?
Every pup's preference is different so try them both out- sometimes both at the same time is the best way to go too!
