Hello Mathias Werner ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Buenos Aires in 2012, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band. At the time of this recording, Floor had been in the band for about 2 and a half months, joining them as an emergency replacement in the middle of a world tour, when their previous singer could not continue due to health reasons.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

@@MathiasWerner hey Mathias, while every version of GLS with Floor is great however the Wacken 2013 is the very best for a 1st time reaction, it's better audio,video and Floor had 10months in with the band to perfect what has become a UA-cam sensation as the most reacted to performance ever ,in this B.A. performance she had 3 months aprox with the band, with Wacken you will hear and see the difference ,the YT link for that ends in : BAVo

Yes! by the time the Wacken concert occurred Floor had tweaked the vocals into the perfect version. Especially in the way that she delivers the last four bars.

@@richardmead5969 Indeed. She hit every note here. She only changed a few of the vocal runs at the end by the time she did Wacken. It's does have better mixing than this, but the Buenos Aires concerts are fire.
@@richardmead5969 Agreed. This version isn't a lesser version, it's a different version. I think she was trying to be more true to Tarja's version here. In the Wacken 2013 version she was performing her own take on it, which was also great. But this one here is the better one in my opinion.

Perfection on stage......
Nightwish is one of, if not, the greatest symphonic bands in the world and Floor Jansen is the third and most capable of their three lead singers. She is performing this after only ten weeks with the band. The reason the fans are so enthused is because the previous singer couldn't sing this and several of the earlier songs. The recommended performance is at Wacken 2013 after Floor with the band ten months. In fact that whole concert is on another level.

Hello Mattias. Nightwish is such a good band. I discovered the band five years ago. I saw singer Floor Jansen in a Dutch tv program ‘ Beste Zangers’, and I was overwhelmed by her voice. So I discovered her band Nightwish and now I’am a huge fan. I saw the band three times live last year. So good. Tip for the next song :Storytime or the recent song Shoemaker. Or follow the list of Gabriel Bardac. Each song is different, you will like it. Bye the way…if you’re from Germany…Floor participated in ‘ Sing meiner Song’, and did a great job. In case you were wondering, that's the London Symphony Orchestra performing the orchestral parts of this song. They've been working with Nightwish for a long time, in between scoring the theme music for 2001 a space odyssey, Raiders of the lost ark, Superman and Star Wars.
In this video the leadsinger Floor Jansen only was 2 and a half months with the band and it sounded already very good, but the Wacken open Air 2013 version is the best

Good one. People usually react to the Wacken 2013 version where Floor was introduced to the European fans as the new singer but this is good too, the crowd chanting Floor at the end makes it a bit special.

Welcome to the magical world of Nightwish full of surprises and great emotions. I don't think it matters which show you choose in the end. as long as you know that their live performances are always better than the studio version. It seems incredible, but that's just the way it is. They are all professionals who only do what the song calls for. They are friendly, respect the audience and their fans, simply the best live band in the world. Thanks for watching this. It's always a pleasure to see a new person first amazed and then impressed by Floor's song and going through all the worlds to which the music takes you on adventures. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. (At the time of the video you watched she only was 2 months with them). Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.
Oh boy, have you just stepped into a big, wide, deep rabbit hole? Yes, yes you have.
Believe it or not, this is the rougher version of GLS official live. After the previous singer took ill mid-tour, this singer Floor Jansen, was called in as an emergency replacement. She was at her sister's wedding in Netherlands when she got the call, yet was on the plane in hours. Her first performance with the band was 2 days later. In this performance, she had only been with the band 10 weeks!

Good reaction - you have a new subscriber. I have discovered Nightwish rather late, only about one year ago, and I am now 66. But I at once became totally hooked to this band and their gorgeous singer Floor Jansen. Her vocal range is insane: from opera (for example "O mio babbino caro" by Puccini) to death metal growls (listen to "Yours is an empty hope" - Wembley 2015 or Rock in Rio 2015 are best for hearing her growls, or - even more - with her former band ReVamp and the song "Disdain") and all between. On stage she is a queen, a goddess with a tremendous stage presence but as a private person she is kind, humble and down-to-earth. She lives with her husband Hannes van Dahl (drummer of the Swedish metal band Sabaton) and their two little girls on a farm at the edge of the Swedish woods, together with some horses, dogs and cats. Metal and classical music are actually two genres that are pretty closely related, and have a thing or two in common. Classical music turned into metal can sound epic, and vice versa. Two of my favorite examples are Harp Twins' cover of Metallica's One, played on, you guessed it, a harp, it is simply stunning, and tells you something about Metallica, and their composing skills. The other one is Miyako (Lovebites) and her piano cover of Helloween's Eagle Fly Free, again, a metal song turned into a classical masterpiece. And let us not forget about Apocalyptica, the finnish metal band who switched the electric/bass guitars for cellos. Speaking of cellos, the duo 2 Cellos play rock songs on... yeah, well... And since this is a Nightwish reaction, I have to mention the 30-ish minutes long classical piece called All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World, the second side of their latest album Human :II: Nature, composed by Tuomas, the keyboardist in Nightwish, who writes most of their music and lyrics, and as it happens, is referred to as the Metal Mozart.
The funny thing about Ghost Love Score, and Nightwish, is that most people probably will tell you that the Wacken 2013 version is better... I do agree, however, even this version, while not being as popular, is still pretty amazing. That should tell you something about the level of their live performances. There are more examples of this, like The Greatest Show On Earth, Yours Is An Empty Hope, The Last Ride of the Day, and Shudder Before the Beautiful for example. While there are certain versions that are being recommended more often, and perhaps rightly so, the other versions certainly aren't bad. If you want to hear another example of symphonic metal epicness, you should check out a dutch symphonic metal band, with the very fitting name Epica. Named after a Kamelot album, if I am not mistaken. Epica's vocalist is a good friend of Floor's.

It's not a boss fight in a video game, it's pirates. The song was written in 2003 when the first part of Pirates of the Caribbean was in cinemas. Nightwish is a combination of film, pop, folk and metal.
This is the "worse" version with Floor Jansen, who has only been with the band for about 2.5 months. She gets even better. After a falling out with the second singer Anette, Floor had to travel from Holland to the USA within 48 hours as a temporary replacement and memorize 1.5 hours of the program. A year later, she officially becomes the number three singer and is also the current. She's not a siren, she's a Valkyrie ;-)

Vous venez de faire connaissance du métal symphonique et de notre reine Floor, mais vous n'avez qu'effleuré le dessus de l'iceberg et vous n'êtes qu'a l'entrée du terrier de lapin. Floor Jansen has two bands of her own even before she Joined NightWish, Revamp and After Forever. She’s Amazing.
You should have picked ... the live performence from Wacken ! .. in front of 82.000 people ! The voclist Floor Jansen is the 3rth singer .. she is from ther Netherlands .. rock and classic trained over here ..and the best female vocalist of all times
This version is great as well. Especially if you realize that Floor was just a few months with the band and none of their songs were written for her/with her in mind.
@@Scirzo in my opinion by the time Wacken came around Floor has made the song her own. This version brings me to tears, Wacken version gives me plenty of Floorgasms.
At Wacken 2013 you can hear that Floor now is "at home" with this song - she totally made it her own. But I also love the enthusiastic audience at Buenos Aires 2012 and Floor still testing what she can make with this song. And you can see how much Tuomas is relieved that it works so well with Floor and that she is obviously totally accepted by the fans. The audience shouting her name at the end of this song proofs this very well.
I actually like to have some variety in these GLS reactions. As great as the Wacken version is, this have some rawness and intimacy that I really like. 😊

But they would tour all around the world and bringing an Orchestea everywhere you go would be very expensive so it's pre recorded while the rest is live.

Nightwish is an extraordinary live band, which is why you should stick with their live concert recordings. Besides some harder stuff Nightwish has plenty of splendid, tender and melodic pieces to offer. Some hardcore Metal fans may call their niche "Disney Metal", so expect multiple, different harmonies/layers in most of their songs..
