      Grp. B is as nuts as it gets and those cars have way more power. However these modern WRC cars are much, much faster than the grp. B cars. But they are pretty "clinical" to watch. Grp. B cars were basically out of control and compensated for that with more power.

    • @Vicente-nu3sy
      @Vicente-nu3sy 7 місяців тому

      @@laupstad The fastest route in the history of the World Rally is still held by a Group B car, Audi Quattro A2, which in the 1983 Argentina Rally did a special of 81 km in 25 minutes, averaging 190 km/h.

    • @laupstad
      @laupstad 7 місяців тому

      @@Vicente-nu3sy Highest average on a stage that basically hasn't been run since yeah. Certainly not in modern times. That stage must have been pretty much a straight considering the car wasn't geared to go much faster than that and almost twice as long as any modern day WRC stage. Introduce a few turns and the modern WRC cars will run circles around the grp. B cars.
      Highest top speed on a rally stage belongs to a WRC Subaru and not even a new one (Peru 2007) which means it was basically a souped up road car with half the power and was nowhere near as good as the current field of WRC cars which are what I would call "prototype" race cars with very little in common with the road going version. Almost like grp. B only with half the power and a 40 year advantage in tech.
      I love group B and it was peak rally as far as I'm concerned, but the new ones are much faster. Boring, but faster.

    Rally drivers are the most talented drivers in the world. They are also probably amongst the lowest paid of race car drivers. Sponsors want an enclosed course where they can charge the audience, with the driver getting a cut. People can just walk up to the side of the road and watch your race for free? No money in that. Rally Drivers are a special breed, like no other.

    These cars are highly modified versions of classic road cars such as Toyota, Peugeot, Ford, Skoda, Citroen, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, etc. They are equipped with a roll cage and are one of the safest cars on the planet. They have racing seats and a five-point seat belt. Sometimes up to seven-point. Despite this fact, serious accidents can occur. Craig Breen died in 2023 during tests for Rally Croatia. However, such serious accidents are exceptional. It just might happen. They are equipped with powerful engines and those from the WRC1 class even with a hybrid drive, which gives them more energy when accelerating. WRC1 cars (in this year it is Toyota Yaris WRC, Ford Puma WRC and Hyundai i20 WRC) each have over 500 horsepower in the sum of the outputs of both engines.
    They race on closed public roads in all conditions, that is also in the rain, then in the heat, winter, at night, in the fog. As for surfaces, all imaginable surfaces such as asphalt, gravel, mud, snow and ice. During the Kenya Safari Rally, they drive through the savanna, where sometimes there is more sand on the road than the road itself. We must not forget the encounters with wild animals, I remember shots where giraffes ran across the track in Kenya, or moose in Finland.
    Each surface has its advantages and disadvantages. The snow in Sweden has the advantage that it also creates barriers against which the car can lean and thus prevent a major accident. However, if he drives into it quickly, he can get bogged down and either just waste time, or worse, have to quit. Gravel and dirt have the advantage that you can drift well on them, but compared to snow and ice, the car holds better and does not spin as much. But when it's wet, it's muddy, so it slows down. or when it is quite dry, but there is really a lot of it, including sand. Check out some Safari rally videos and you'll see what I mean in some footage. On the tarmac, there the car holds the best, has the best grip, but when it is wet, it slides. And as we verified during the Rally Central Europe, when the tarmac is wet and there are also fallen leaves on it, it's a killer combination. Check Esapekka Lappi crash on 2023 Central European Rally.
    The cost of a Rally1 car is close to €1 million, while Rally2 cars are capped at approximately €200,000. Of course, the weaker the car, the cheaper it is. A Peugeot 208 Rally4 can cost much less, now in a quick search I found one already ready for racing for 73,200 euros. So the prices vary a lot. On the other hand, the Audi Quattro S1, the legendary Group B car, costs around €2 - 2.5 million.

    Dakar might be fun for you guys to check out too. While Group B was popping off in the 80s, there was also a ton of wild vehicles at Dakar. My personal favorite were the Kamaz trucks, gigantic, 5 ton + trucks the size of a garbage truck able to keep up with rally cars like these (at least, the ones of the time) as they flew through the dunes.
    There's a very infamous clip of the DAF TurboTwin truck overtaking a world-famous rally car of the year mere moments before a devastating crash which would reshape the entire league for racing trucks.
    I'm pretty sure there's videos of those DAF TurboTwin trucks and the end of the unlimited Kamaz trucks.

      I once stood there in the middle of the woods, only 2 meters away from the track and everytime one of those cars flew by it felt like my heart stopped pounding for two seconds and I had to breathe twice as much because most of the surrounding air/oxygen in the area was sucked away by the passing cars. That might sound a bit overexaggerated, but I kid you not! For 2 or three seconds it really felt like these cars took away most of the available oxygen and I had to breathe air out of a plastic bag instead out of the surrounding nature.

    @Tuomas_Oskari 9 місяців тому +1

    After all, the cars always have a co-driver who has notes made before the rally, with corners, jumps, distances, etc. marked. So, for example, is there going to be a gentle left or a tight right, and is the bend gentler toward the end or a tighter turn, and is there, for example, a stone on the inside corner that could break something from the car, etc. are things that are usually noted in the notes. The assistant driver then reads them to the driver so that the driver knows what is coming. Since the time to read the notes is short, the markings are usually arrows, numbers and various symbols, each of which has its own meaning. And of course, what is recorded there, how much the driver wants information about what is coming, also has an effect.
    the teams are always given a few days before the start of the rally to familiarize themselves with the route (the driver drives with his co-driver through the route, possibly even several times, within the given time limit of course) and the co-driver takes notes based on what the driver says

    It happens lots in Canada.
    It must have been commented but I can't read all the way back to find out... the main reason the drivers can drive all sideways and come into corners at speeds pushing the limits of physics is they have "Navigators", who are constantly tell ing the driver exactly what's around the next corner, or what he'll have to deal with when the car comes down on the other side of the jump... you need to find one that shares in car chatter and listen to the code they speak to convey so much info so fast.
    As for maintenance after the days racing segment, they completely teardown and rebuild every car for the next day's leg.
    My family owned a Motor Inn in Kamloops when I was a teen, and we had the two "Triumph TR-7" race teams stay at our establishment.. my brother and I got to watch the nightly teardown and rebuilds. We also got to go out and watch live 3 different days (segments).

    Rally isn’t about who goes the fastest, but the ones who can keep concentrating amongst the variables that constantly barrage you during every stage. You mishear one word, and you’re done. @olivergermany5904 6 місяців тому

    FYI These cars are all 4WD and highly modded. These cars have about 400 to 600 HP. The modifications goal is maximum of acceleration and traction. Their speed is almost limited at a topspeed of about 150 mph, but they can accellerate (on gravel) faster than most of todays supercars with more horsepower (0-60 mph under 4 seconds). On snowy stages of a race, the tires are with spikes for more grip.
    The co-driver reads the socalled "Roadbook" he wrote before the race while all drivers and co-drivers are exploring the next stage of the race.
    One of the most successfull rally-drivers of the world (Walter Rörl, Germany) told in an interview about a crash at a Rally in the 90´s (Rally Monte Carlo 4-times-winner), that he didn´t noticed the instructions of his co-driver for the next turn. So he run in to fast and flew of the road. The way he told this the reporter was so funny 🤣. Walter Rörl is known for his dark humor.
    The comentary at the beginning of this video "F1 is for boys, rally is for men" was out of an interview with Walter.
    The first (very) successfull woman in rally-sport was Michelle Mouton (in the 70´s/80´s). She won Monte Carlo, Paris-Dakar (the toughes and longest rally in the world) and was also first at Pike´s Peak. Pike´s Peak is today a Race on tarmac roads. There are several classes both 2WD and 4WD but the cars here are turbocharged 4 cylinder AWD race cars with tube frams=es yheavily modded suspensions and lots of care and maintenence.

      Back a decades ago .... one of the factory teams motto was .... "If you wanna win, hire a FINN". When the Group A arrived ... other nations got their chance too. 🙂 The Group B cars were a true beasts, which were needed to be tamed .... usually by a FINNs 🙂 Kalle Rovanperä started rallying w Toyota Starlet @ 8 yrs old ... go figure, why the scandinavian ppl's car handling and driving by the "seat of the pants" are "something else", to say it polite. Greetings from 🇫🇮.

    "Modded" is a bit of an understatement. These are manufacturer teams - the cars are built for this. Mostly they have to be based on a production model, the minimum production number is around a thousand IIRC, but still can't be fully custom.

    There is a lot to like about the WRC class of motor sport. First is the drivers, to perform at the top level on various road surfaces and conditions is truly mindblowing to me. On the techical side, the motors are very limited by the class rules, but the suspension and balance of the cars is a constant source of amazement to me.

    Just a heads-up for when you react to other WRC videos: if you feel like you're watching the same cars over and over again going through the same places and doing the same jumps, it's because each team has two cars and many of the stages (that's what's called to the stretches of road they have to race through from point A to point B) are run twice.

    These cars top out at about 125mph on gravel. The races are on closed public roads and as you assumed, it's a time trial type situation, but it's not the time of a single run that counts, instead they do multiple courses per day over several days, and the best overall time wins.

    Average gravel road width in finland is between 5,75-6,25 meters. Average speed in rallyes (WRC class) is 120-130 km/h. Finnish Rallly driver Kalle Rovanperä did 133,5km/h average speed at 2024 , so at some point at long straight places he drove 160++km/h. In the middle of the forest. Come to Finland to see rally!! 😃

    These are the most talented drivers in professional motor racing. Hence the crashes are a lot less frequent than you might think. They do happen, but the cars are so well prepared, that injuries are rare.

    These cars are actually driven by two people: The actual driver and a co-pilot in the passenger seat. The second guy has a roadbook from which he/she constantly (sic!) reads out information about the upcoming section of the track (curves, angles, distances, crossroads, climbs/descents, jumps, potholes, etc.). The driver then primarily(!) relies on these informations to steer the car - because otherwise he/she would not be able to prepare for parts of the track that he cannot see. His/her own vision is only secondary to that input. Try to convince your brain to work like that! Driving by what they can actually see would slow them down - a lot.
    Have a look at clips from onboard cameras (with onboard audio). It's really amazing to see and hear how much input the drivers get from their co's. I would not be surprised if they were able to even handle a track blindfolded and based on the spoken information alone.

    The drivers have a co-driver who is calling out speed and intensity of corners by a number system, it means that the driver doesn't have to process what's coming up and can just concentrate on speed and technique, it's how they can go so insanely fast on a narrow winding road.

To explain it short the diff is in the car and race regulations in WRC while in B group you pick a car and just do what you want!

    4 cylinder very small hatchbacks with a massive turbocharger+hybrid system reving shy of 8K RPMs making 520hp
    Super lightweight, just shy of 2800lbs, sequential 6 speed gearbox most of the time in a very short ratio set up, AWD with a rear bias going flat out on tiny roads with blind corners, jumps, roundabouts, crossroads, etc and yeah........lots of skills, these guys have to be fast on tarmac, gravel, mud, snow, sand sometimes wet and dry surfaces.
    Even Formula 1 drivers say they're ( WRC guys ) the most skilled.

    There's a navigator in the passenger seat relaying track info constantly. Saw a ground effects race years ago in Germany when a dear jumped out the exact moment a car passed by going well over 100mph. Dear sailed 70 ft high into the air & disappeared 100ft or so off into the forrest. Hardly affected the car but it I'm sure it must have cracked the windshield. Poor dear didn't know what hit him.

    These cars belong to what may be the fastest era the WRC has gone through, labelled 'WRC+' or 'Super WRC', they run a few years of 1.6 liter, turbocharged inline 4 engines making ~380hp, with heavy anti lag and the most extensive use of aero the WRC has ever seen. Someone will know for sure, but I think these cars were faster than the current (and now close to extintion) Rally1 class. Then there's the rally itself, Finland; fastest event on the calendar, sometimes they find themselves being completely flat out over 1 full minute. Very demanding for both driver and codriver and the cars. The scenes of Hannu Mikkola's S1 E2 plowing through the stage leaving a trail of burnt oil and water vapor from the brakes lives rent free in my head.
