Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020, and new album Yesterwynde, was announced on April 30, 2024, and is set for release on September 20, 2024.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

What? Um no... they both have their strengths and are amazing in their own way. It was Tarja's emotion in her singing (more than most straight opera) that inspired Tuomas.

Tarja is/was a operatic singer that tried a little rock. Floor is a Rock/Metal singer that has done operatic and musical training. Four years of Rock Academy and one year each of Belcanto and Musical Theatre at the conservatory. Floor started singing in a band (After Forever) at the age of 16. She has a LOT of experience. She also worked as a vocal coach for a few years. She really studied the voice.
When the second singer (Tarja was the first) quit in the middle of the US tour. Floor was called in to substitute till the end of the tour and a year later she was announced as the new lead singer.

Welcome to Nightwish! I happened upon Nightwish over 5 years ago...as I listened to Floor singing "Ghost Love Score" and my first thoughtwas, why haven't I heard of Nightwish before now? I am 66 years old and grew up listening mainly to heavier rock bands, Ozzy & Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Boston, AC/DC, and many more...but Nightwish... They are in a league all their own.
I sang in with a traveling choir in the early 1980's after I recovered from multiple operations on my left knee and thigh ( Sports injury ). It was impossible for me to stand for an hour and a half or more until 1982. We sang mainly in churches or community centers.
Enjoy Nightwish! You will find d that their music spans many genres... so be prepared to surprised!
Glad you decided to react to this band,This is with their 3rd singer Floor Jansen,a 6’1” Dutch vocal beast..They’re definitely a band that are better live,their studio stuff is good but it’s their live performances where they shine…they go from operatic though to rock,folk,Celtic and on to thrash and everything in between,hope you decide to dip your toe into some more..if you do then definitely use Gabriel’s list as it has the best quality videos performance and audio wise.👍

The songs and musicianship of Nightwish gave Floor the material to become a worldwide star in her own right, and Floor’s amazing vocal capabilities made Nightwish a more prominent band around the globe. Tarja was fired in 2005 and she hasn't been a part of the band for much longer than she was, so Tarja is a long gone history for Nightwish.

Personally, I've been listening to Nightwish since 1999, that is, almost since their beginning, and for me Tarja is also a distant history and I most often prefer Floor's versions of old songs. Those fans who are really attached to Tarja are usually not interested in post-2005 Nightwish, that is, in fact, they are no longer fans of the band.
Skid row and sebastian bach, black sabbat and ozzy or dio, judas priest and halford, helloween and michael kiske, etc. A lot of bands with remarkable voices keep going without their famous singers. But... Thats really said something?. How many of them reach their prime again?. Floor its an excelent singer, and nightwish till marcos left was an amazing formation. But most of the fans who start to listen them on 90s still prefer the original band.
@SokolRock Relax, sport. It wasn't an act of violence, it's a disagreement. I'm willing to bet the band doesn't consider her ancient history either. She was quite literally the voice of the Nightwish legacy and was part of what gave them their uniqueness.

There are always whiners grieving over their favorite line-up, which no longer exists, so what? The fact that Tarja's devoted fans have proclaimed Nightwish's death thousands of times does not affect the truth that Tarja's dismissal didn't actually affect their popularity growth.

Yes, Floor is a totally different singer to Tarja. Tarja was very good at what she did, but it did limit Nightwish to a certain style. Floor can sing in any style, from opera to growls, sometimes within the same song! Floor is the best singer that I have ever heard.
I hope you continue your Nightwish journey. Anything from the same concert would be a good start.If you do continue I will come along for the ride.

Nightwish -- a band consisting of truly talented musicians who play for the song. No egos here and the end result is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. I really hope that you continue on your Nightwish journey because there is so much more to discover. I would, however, be hesitant to do any direct comparisons of the three female vocalists. You would find that some of the Army have very vehement opinions on which singer is "best". I like them all, and enjoy their differences that, together make Nightwish what it is today.
Yes, please no comparison. Every singer had/has her era and was/is very good in it. There are hardcore fans for every of these singers but do not listen to them if they say "she is the one and only". Of course also I have a favourite singer but I would not say the other singers are bad. It is a matter of personal taste and should not be discussed.
I just wanna say that I like your reaction in a whole new way. Some reactors take it very descriptively apart by notes and how the song is felt thanks to that. Many others just are in awe and I daresay they may overreact a bit on purpose to get extra views. But you my man - just pure joy, partying. Gotta love seeing such nice and honest reaction. Nightwish does incorporate Irish or celtic as well as classical composition elements in the music Tuomas writes. Some other songs are very folkish. fyi, there is a backing track in this song providing the additional orchestra and choir parts not played on the keyboards.

Nightwish since 1996. edit: comparisons can still be controversial if you know their history. All three of the Nightwish singers are brilliant and have different aspects of their vocals which suit the material written for them but Floor seems to blend her predecessors effortlessly.
Oh cool, you find Valkyrie Goodness. Look to her O mio bambino caro( Opera). Or Yours is your empty hope( dèep crowls) Then you know a little bit of her range . PS Floor is so a humble and natural person.

The main difference between Tarja and Floor is that Floor does not have limits. Tarja sings her pseudo-opera, and that is all she does. Here you have heard maybe ten percent of Floor's capabilities.

You seem quite certain, but may I remind you that Romanticide is on the album Once. I think Tuomas shifted his interests rather then Tarja is not capable of rocking out. That being said, Floor IS more versatile. I don't see Tarja growling any time soon.

As you delve deeper into their music (as I hope you will) you will find many diverse songs. Symphonic metal is the official genre, but you will find songs ranging from metal to ballads and even a jazz track. I have subscribed to your channel in the hope that you'll keep on watching and listening to Nightwish, especially their live recordings. There's no denying that Tarja had her own unique flare to bring into Nightwish's music and is a very talented artist, that being said though... Floor is simply the Cinderella shoe that fits just right. Her vocal range and ability to bring different qualities (emotion, soft, rough, power etc.) into the vocals brings it all together. She will sing just what the songs need. :)

Dream Theatre and Nightwish both play genre known as symphonic metal.
Their first singer Tarja did everything in Operatic / classical style, then in 2005 the got a real poppy singer, Anette Olzon, in 2012 they got Floor Jansen who does both Operatic / classical and Rock / pop but also celtic folk voice and she can even do deep death growls
I love this band, and I adore Floor Jansen. She's the bomb.

For me she is the best female singer in Rock/ Metal out there. She can take the high notes, she can take the low notes, she can even growl.
Tarja was awesome with the operatic voice, but nothing left and right, Anette was a poppy voice but coudn't serve the operatic voice, Floor can serve both worlds and even more, she is the metal godess we don't deserve. Plus she is a very grounded, friendly and kind hearted person

Erk! That stuff.. Many years ago, a couple of friends and I visited Dubrovnik, (before it was full of shell and bullet holes). I walked nearly all the way round the walls, but it was too hot, so I got down and found a bar. After a beer, I asked for a 'local drink', as I usually do in a new country, and got a large glass of the plum dynamite. Later, I remember waving money and asking for a bottle. Somehow, my friends found what was left of me and deposited me in a hotel room before I got arrested for intoxication. Took two days to recover:). Floor, well, she sounds more popular and rock here because that is what was required. She is so talented and versatile that she can interpret a song and throw an appropriate style on it. She is so stupendously good that I struggle to think of anyone who could match her:)

Floor has a more advanced form of singing that combines many elements of many genres and seeks to go even further beyond them. It has terms that no other forms have to describe muscle and larynx control not seen in other styles that allows for smooth transitions and even more power over longer periods of time.

If you like Dream Theatre you might like Ayreon. Both James Le Brie and Floor Jansen sing on his album The Source. First song of that album is “The day the world breaks down”. They are on the studio version, which video is also more helpful in understanding what Ayreon is. Live version is great too though.
I think watching Tarja Turunen perform Ghost Love Score would be a great idea! The song was written with her voice and style in mind, but I would agree that she leans more operatic than Floor Jansen does.

Very good reaction! You were really into it and it was clear that it was genuine. You also had interesting comments. Floor Jansen is Dutch and has been with Nightwish since 2013. She is one of the seven wonders of the world. She can do it all and has a huge charisma. She is also tall and look like a Norse valkyria. There is so much Nightwish to see with Floor that is top notch, depending on if you mostly want metal or symphonic. One thing that Nightwish do is to use a backing track with musicians from the London Symphonic Orchestra and also a London choir (that I forgot the name of). Its the keyboaordist Tuomas that arranges those. I guess ghost love score is as symphonic as you can get it, they are mostly heavier.
Floor is also singing a beautiful duet with Troy Donockley, the guy that plays diverse ethnical instruments in Nightwish. Its acoustic and Troy plays guitar.
Unfortunately Nightwish is on hold now. An important member, the bass player and singer Marko Hietala left and then they tried for a while but eventually decided to put it all on a hold.

Props to the band, orchestra, choir and, of course, Floor for this unbelievable performance........this is an incredibly difficult score to perform........the "OH-Oh-Oh" rhythm by the band at the start (and repeated vocally by Floor later) reminds me of the classical piece "Carmina Burana".....given Floor's training, this is a cool 'call back'........again, she gives us "multiple Floorgasms"!
Instant sub here. You recognise and appreciate just the right thing. Lovely to see someone who understands music. But for your own sake, be careful comparing these singers. Alot of fans reads way too much into honest opinions. Let's just like what we like.
You're totally right. Floor has some classical training and can cover many of the older songs well, though sometimes transposing down into a more comfortable place for Floor. No doubt Floor's range is amazing but her real talents lie in a more energetic rockier more cutting sound

To inform you about song choices for Nightwish it is of great importance to know NOT listen/watch the following two songs in the beginning of your Nightwish journey.
- "The Poet and the Pendulum"
- "The Greatest Show on Earth"
The reason for this is, those 2 songs are long and especially the first one holds a very deep meaning to the bandmembers of Nightwish themselves. So it's important to experience these songs after some other songs when you start to know the band a little bit more.
Some song suggestions for Nightwish which will be certainly interesting
- "Storytime"
- "Romanticide" (This one is a bit harder in comparison with "Ghost Love Score".)
- "Yours is an Empty Hope" Live from Wembley (Floor will surprise you in this song with her vocal capabilities.)
- "Ever Dream"
- "I Want my Tears Back"
- "The Islander" (This one almost completely sung by Marco, the bass player.)
- ...... Other 'Wacken 2013' songs from Nightwish.
Also to respond to your question about differences or making a comparison video between Tarja and Floor, them doing the same song i guess you should take a look at "Phantom of the Opera" by Nightwish 😉

Also, it seems like your camera distracted you in then end, and you didn't get the whole Floorgasm... No big deal, I've listened to this song thousands of times and it still brings it.
During her time with Nightwish, Tarja had already complained about the other band members that they were constantly drinking. She was already a bad Finn back then ;-) The other band members often got drunk after the shows or played drinking games on the way. They still drink alcohol on stage today. Tuomas also forced the first bass player out of the band because he was drunk on stage. These guys know when they can drink a lot. Tarja was fired back in 2005 due to personal and artistic differences. The song here is one of Tarja's Era.
The Wacken Open Air takes place on a former cattle pasture, which is why the festival has a bull skull as its logo. Today it is a hayfield.
