John Paul Jones was the CEMENT that held Zep together and for In thru the Out Door he was the conductor. Jimmy had 2 or 3 magnificent parts in that but it was JPJ that made that album with Percy's voice.

I know why the video cameras/photographers concentrated on Bonham/Plant/Page. Their pyrotechnics were out of the world. But the solid "Rock" which bound them together was that under exposed multi-instrumentalist called John Paul Jones.

Zeppelin's greatest riff, Black Dog, was written by Jones on a train using a shorthand notation technique that his dad had taught him.

@@lastdaysguitar he’s an amazing bassist but your missing my point. He’s a true “artist” in Zep his medium just happened to be a bass guitar.

I understand he's a versatile musician, but the very first words in your post is "JPJ is not a bassist" and that statement is definitively incorrect, pretty sure JPJ'd take some offense and answer you in so many words: I AM A BASSIST. @@gtate135

Yep. Fool in the Rain. When that song came out, I remember listening to it on the radio and thinking, 'This isn't Zep!'. But the more I listened, the more I realized what a great song it was, and so much of its greatness is down to JPJ's keyboards. And we're not even talking about his contribution to Them Crooked Vultures.

I'm not sure why people say JPJ is underrated? He's a master of all. Playing whatever needed to be played, killer riffs, excellent moving backing parts. They were four pieces that made a beast. That's why the beast couldn't live with only 3/4 of it's parts.

If youve never listened to Them Crooked Vultures, then please do so. He was in that band with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. Excellent CD. I was eagely anticipating the follow up but it never came. Doubt it will now. Jones is around 76-77 yrs old and Grohl is dealing with the untimely death of Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters.

That's amazing. It was Muddy Waters' album " Father's and Sons " that inspired me to become a Jazz-Rock Multi-instrumenilist. Phil Upchurch played Bass on that album. I went up to him at the 1989 Namn show in Chicago and told him what I've just told you all. Upchurch said to me; " Yeah, so what are you doing now?" God, what a cold heartless asshole this guy was! And I can smoke him on guitar and Bass. The only reason all these guys are famous and I'm not is because they were born 10 years before I was and that's it.
