Kinda off topic, but I have yet to hear any youtuber talk about the small, silver rolling door on the ground on dam in the satellite building. My dad told a friend and I that it opened up and guards came out while he was playing, but I still call BS to this day🤦
The RDP unit of the N64 is the "Reality Display Processor". It's pretty much a discrete GPU that handles frame buffering, depth testing, and rasterising to take those tasks off the CPU. That generation of consoles were largely the earliest ones to feature hardware acceleration for 3D graphics.
I would guess a lot of the weirdness with Silo in particular is because it was a survivor of the rail shooter beta footage that exists out there. Silo was clearly one of the earliest levels that was finished enough to have a demo to show to the press, so it's not a surprise there's a lot leftover from the game's rail shooter life. Those missiles firing off would've been a helluva setpiece to rival the most badass Time Crisis moments for sure.
It does make me wish every game had a feature similar to Valve's developer commentary mode, when you walk through the game in real time and learn about hidden dev intentions. That'd be cool if we could retroactively implement that in every old game. (as a sidenote I wish so called remasters of old games would put effort into features like that instead of ruining art styles or the stability of the game) I guess that's what video developer commentaries are made for though.
@@CamrosMedia Sometimes they don't remember, because it was something they made on a rainy afternoon 20 years ago and forgot about. People wonder about it for years but even the person who made it doesn't know!

And that they forgot to remove this function!
A lot of the unused properties of Silo: the vents, the rocket launch, the ability to open and close the launch door, remind me of the end of Aztec. I wonder if they decided the two levels were becoming too similar and stopped developing those features in Silo, or whilst making Silo, became inspired to create Aztec. In regards to Ourumov's briefcase, they might have added it before realising that the player would have to kill Ourumov to obtain it, but Ourumov can't die in Silo because he is needed in Train, and by that point it was just easier to leave the briefcase and key in than go back and remove them.
Is it possible that the original objective was not to open the ceiling doors but to close them before launching so the silo exploded without the c4? I wished we knew!

Another strange thing: the timeline in Silo does not make sense. It says that it happen 2 years before the main story and that it takes place in Soviet Kirghizstan. The main story is set in 1995, the year of the movie, however, that would put Silo in 1993, 2 years after the USSR ceased to exist. Therefore, it should've been set at least 4 years before the main story.
If you look in the 'mission background' it states that "Deep intelligence reports suggest that this operation may well be outside the control of the former soviet powers in the region" which suggests the silo was abandoned after the dissolution of the USSR and the Janus group (Trev/Ouromov) took it over.
The tall vent in the rocket silo reminds me of a part in the Moonraker book where Bond is trapped in a silo and hides at the top of a vent shaft to avoid being hurt to a crisp when the rocket launches. I wonder if that might have been a potential subplot.

Ourumov's briefcase was the only mystery I remember about Goldeneye64 since I was a child. What happens if you shoot the Dostovei in his other hand, does he recoil like the guards? (here I am, talking about Dostoveis in the hands of enemies again 😂🤣)
I had messed around a lot on that stage but I don't think I've ever noticed the silo doors opening. I always figured that the hardware cards were for the GoldenEye. I didn't think it was an Easter Egg for the names of the Nintendo 64 hardware components. Technically. If there's a GoldenEye on that level. That would mean that there was a third one were as in the film it was indicated there were two? I can't remember if destroying it after taking the photo fails the objective though. But the silo does explode it on higher difficulties. I imagine the lowest difficulty is to help players learn the level. I'd like more videos like this. I find them fascinating.
I doubt it's true, but a silly theory that I just thought of: Perhaps an early concept for the Silo mission was to infiltrate the Silo, obtain the briefcase and key, use the key to open the roof and then use the briefcase to reprogram and launch the missile, and finally escape before the missile launched, possibly with the ultimate idea being to use the missile to destroy their own silo here. And then during development, the objectives were reworked into the final version of Silo, with those earlier ideas being recycled into Aztec instead. Theory aside, the main thing that sticks out to me is that it's quite similar to Aztec though, with the opening roof paralleling the exhaust bay and the implication that the missile was meant to launch at some point. I have to wonder if there is some connection there at least.
RDP: Reality Display Processor. The RCP is split into two parts, the RSP (Reality Signal Processor) and RDP; the RSP does all the vertex calculations, then the RDP does the texturing, blending, filtering, etc. to actually generate the display.
Great video, this is probably my favourite level to replay. Another quirk of the briefcase is that it makes the “click” of picking up a weapon as opposed to the usual beep of a gadget/item
I wonder if the silo roof is as simple as the roof assuming it's an (unfinished) cutscene if it's on screen with no weapon.. just a weird quirk that wasn't bothered to be taken care of.. because who'd bother to go unarmed looking at the ceiling?
Some other guy left a comment on this vid and said it was a developer feature for capturing cool footage of the doors opening with the missile in the foreground, and they forgot to remove it. In that light it makes perfect sense haha
What I like about these commentary videos is the funny ingenious way to bypass certain UA-cam filters by "passing away" enemies, such a great way to unalive our foes, from now on when I play I will pass away all my enemies. 😏😈
I'll bet if you can score an interview with one of the old devs from Rare they could tell you what they had originally planned for this stage in GoldenEye.
I discovered something recently that I never knew about Aztec. I knew about the wall climb technique in the pit at the beginning of the level so I had an idea. After clearing out all the enemies, I wanted to run back into the pit and lure Jaws back to that wall so I could do the wall climb technique and shoot him from above. To my surprise, not only can Jaws shoot you through that wall from the bottom of the pit, but he can do the wall climb as well and that totally destroyed my idea. Hahahahaha I had hopes that it would work but it’s still pretty awesome learning something new after 25 years.
@@mathprodigy because it is a technique that exploits a game glitch. If you walk up to that wall, look straight up while pushing yourself into it and rapidly switch weapons you can warp straight up to the top of it.
@@jameswilson591 No glitch, I remember just being able to go up the wall by walking into it. Thought it was funny as a kid. It's getting back into the Facility vent that requires strafing left while aiming/spinning right on the toilet.

There's also a catwalk in one of the silos with a guard standing on it, but you can't actually get to it because the door goes nowhere. Also the RDP is the Reality Display Processor, it's a part of what you might consider the N64's GPU.
@@GamerFolklore The inaccessible catwalk was more of a mystery for me as a kid than anything else on this list and I spent a lot of time studying the map in a walkthrough booklet trying to figure out where it was in relation to the higher levels. YES...do a video! :)
Don’t forget about the railing that is missing where the elevator was going to be. Pretty sure there is beta footage of Bond riding it. (Also, someone else mentioned the guard that is standing on the lone catwalk.) So many weird things in this level.
I wonder where that guard ends up if you shoot him to get his attention. The door he’s next to goes nowhere but if you’re far away enough from an enemy they can clip through doors in pursuit of Bond
UPDATE: I tried getting the guard to notice me by shooting next to him, no response. I shot his rifle, he flinched but otherwise didn’t move. Evidently the AI knows he cannot go anywhere
All they did was replace the blood splatter effect with the spark effect. Nintendo asked them to tone it down last minute, and the screenshot had already been taken at that point for the box art.
'Pass Away'.. is that really the world we live in now that you can't even say 'the word' of what you're actually doing to a fake, non existent, non living NPC.
I always assumed Ouromov's briefcase held an early Goldeneye key or prototype James could choose to take as a 2nd/alt objective for Mi6/Q to study. IIRC it was in a briefcase in the movie.
6:23 I just tried this on 1964 emulator not too long ago and even though I couldn't open the ceiling, I discovered that both of those ceilings are transparent. You can shoot bullets, rockets, grenades etc and they go through the ceiling as if nothing is there. I threw a bunch of throwing knives to the point where the audio started to glitch out and decided to shoot rockets as well. This ended up crashing the game.
When I was younger I tried to kill Bond in some weird places to try and get a bette view of some things. The ladder on this stage, the other side of the vent on Facility and the bottom of cradle were the ones I was obsessed with lol. Great video as usual!
The behavior of Ouromov with his briefcase strikes me as weird in LTK too. Ouromov normally drops the briefcase and runs as soon as he sees you. I assume this is because it’s tied to his health and he starts with zero health in LTK, but you don’t even have to shoot him once… I mean, it’s not like all the guards see you and just die in LTK, they have to be shot, even if shot in the gun. Not so with Ouromov and his briefcase.
Wonder if the briefcase used to be in multiplayer as a capture the flag item type deal, and the vent looks like it used to be the original starting position for the beta or something then you'd go up the ladder. That's just my guess though. Reminds me of when I was a kid I wondered why the balcony doors on frigate were locked and couldn't be opened near the control room (not the one downstairs)
Another interesting tidbit about the Silo mission is that the room where you can open the bay door, there is a balcony and guard that you cannot get too through normal means. I wonder if there are game genie codes that allow you to explore that area more.
I have an explanation for the opening roof in silo. in early stage of development the game was a "shooter on rails" I have a VHS of the early stage and in that part si had like a lift where you go up into the top of that silo
@@Punttipate62 wait you're a PC player, there should be a way for you to play the canceled Xbox 360 remake from over a decade ago, it's the one all Goldeneye players wanted and looks incredible. Just UA-cam a video of how to do it, I haven't done it yet, but hopefully it isn't anything more than downloading the file and then patching it or something.
My memory may be messing with me but I'm sure you could open a panel on one of the missiles with the briefcase or key equipped. I read it in the Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) at the time and am sure I tried it and it worked.
the vent/shaft in the beginning of silo. my wild guess is that at one time in dev maybe on all level or just some. the intro sequence would not only be a few shot of the level but also how bond enters them. like Silo would switch between the random level shots we see in game today and a seen of bond entering the level by lowering himself down the shaft/vent by rope like how HECU does in HL1.
Objective f) Launch Missile Obtain Ourumow's briefcase (launch codes) -> reprogram missile (use one of the computers next to elevator) -> open roof (Ourumow's keycard) -> leave Beta test: "... no, it takes too long. I cannot finish DLTK mode any more" :(
My gosh… I’ve always wondered about these details in Silo. As a kid I discovered the silo doors by my self. Ans wondered about that ladder and vent. Part of me recalls even getting down to the bottom of the silo. But my mind is definitely foggy. Maybe I used a GameShark. I have always had a huge fascination with the different areas in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark that were inaccessible but had more beyond the barriers. These games are fascinating ❤
The ladder you can't access, and that it leads to a vent, makes me wonder if the vent was actually supposed to be where the level *starts* at one point in development.
Silo is so much fun, thanks for the video! Is it possible to have a plastique not attach to a surface and fail the mission? I swear I've seen it done, but I recently tried to do it, and couldn't.
I remember using the key/briefcase to open and close the silo door… I’m sure you had to select it and press Z like a gadget (rather than A or B as mentioned in this vid)… it was a long time ago though!
14:12 H4, C3, K2, A1. Seems like the intended word to unscramble there is Hack, which would be fitting of the devs to throw in there.

I can't remember if destroying it after taking the photo fails the objective though. But the silo does explode it on higher difficulties. I imagine the lowest difficulty is to help players learn the level.
I'd like more videos like this. I find them fascinating.
Never forget that weird feeling when I first tried the silo roof opening trick
Great point about the click vs beep! I hadn't considered that.
Oh, thats interesting- and in a way, kind of makes more sense with the doors having the ability to close back rather than just staying open.
@@NightshadeDt yep. I love learning about those little tidbits of oddities we never noticed before
you know when peach comes up and says “he we gooooooo”👰🏼♀️ you know it’s time for a truely remarkable goldeneye video
What I like about these commentary videos is the funny ingenious way to bypass certain UA-cam filters by "passing away" enemies, such a great way to unalive our foes, from now on when I play I will pass away all my enemies. 😏😈
This stage was originally programmed to be on rails like the Virtua Cop games....I think it is possibly the very first level they created
There's a game shark code that lets you mod a briefcase that explodes into multiplayer.
I'll bet if you can score an interview with one of the old devs from Rare they could tell you what they had originally planned for this stage in GoldenEye.
I love the wub calm intro and music you use often!~
I had no idea you could open the silo roof like that! That's so cool
If u can climb it, why couldn't a 7 foot monster dual wielding AR44s wearing suspenders climb it hahaha
@@tetravega567 I don’t know what wall you’re talking about but the one I’m talking about you cannot just walk up it. It’s literally called the “goldeneye Aztec wall climb glitch”. Look it up
dude silo is such a good demo for the game in general. I remember playing it on a demo console before buying the game 🥺 I was blown away that the mission was failed if the scientists got unalived
There's also a catwalk in one of the silos with a guard standing on it, but you can't actually get to it because the door goes nowhere. Also the RDP is the Reality Display Processor, it's a part of what you might consider the N64's GPU.
I was thinking about exploring that catwalk! Maybe in a future video.
@@GamerFolklore The inaccessible catwalk was more of a mystery for me as a kid than anything else on this list and I spent a lot of time studying the map in a walkthrough booklet trying to figure out where it was in relation to the higher levels. YES...do a video! :)
make me think of kaiba when he blocks the gunshoot with his briefcase xD
Don’t forget about the railing that is missing where the elevator was going to be. Pretty sure there is beta footage of Bond riding it. (Also, someone else mentioned the guard that is standing on the lone catwalk.) So many weird things in this level.
I wonder where that guard ends up if you shoot him to get his attention. The door he’s next to goes nowhere but if you’re far away enough from an enemy they can clip through doors in pursuit of Bond
Yes, there exists beta video footage of Bond riding the elevator lift. The footage was a very brief segment in some promotional video.
UPDATE: I tried getting the guard to notice me by shooting next to him, no response. I shot his rifle, he flinched but otherwise didn’t move. Evidently the AI knows he cannot go anywhere
I threw some knives out of the silo ceiling and the flipping noise kept going for awhile.
I'd love to see an explanation of the backstory for the blood splatter that made it to the back of the gamebox, but never made it to the game.
All they did was replace the blood splatter effect with the spark effect. Nintendo asked them to tone it down last minute, and the screenshot had already been taken at that point for the box art.
@KnoxCarbon someone needs to make a mod to replace the spark effect with blood again
@@threatlevel_TACO Someone already did, search "GoldenEye Blood mod"
@@threatlevel_TACOThe closest thing is a GameShark code that made the spark red. Looks weird too
Hell yeah Goose. Love the goldeneye content. Can’t wait to watch
'Pass Away'.. is that really the world we live in now that you can't even say 'the word' of what you're actually doing to a fake, non existent, non living NPC.
I don't get it either, tbh
100K subs, what a milestone. Congratulations
Always learning something new for the game I've played the hell out of. I love your content man.
Thank you!
I spent countless hours trying to glitch a way into that vent, and now I don't have to wonder anymore.
"Ourumovs briefcase" sounds like a physics experiment or something.
Maybe they put Schrodingers cat in Ourumovs briefcase? 😂
I always assumed Ouromov's briefcase held an early Goldeneye key or prototype James could choose to take as a 2nd/alt objective for Mi6/Q to study.
IIRC it was in a briefcase in the movie.
6:23
I just tried this on 1964 emulator not too long ago and even though I couldn't open the ceiling, I discovered that both of those ceilings are transparent.
I remember doing similar!
LTK
Wonder if the briefcase used to be in multiplayer as a capture the flag item type deal, and the vent looks like it used to be the original starting position for the beta or something then you'd go up the ladder. That's just my guess though.
Reminds me of when I was a kid I wondered why the balcony doors on frigate were locked and couldn't be opened near the control room (not the one downstairs)
could be, the next Rare game, Perfect Dark, did have a mode called king of the hill where you had to hold onto a briefcase for longer then anyone else
My homies aren't here to give me the routine goodnight kiss. A video from goose will work just as well.
*blows a kiss through the screen*
Keep up the good work, buddy. Been watching since the good old days, and I'll continue to do so.
Thank you very much ♥️
This must be the satisfying pronunciation of SILO i've ever heard
Another interesting tidbit about the Silo mission is that the room where you can open the bay door, there is a balcony and guard that you cannot get too through normal means. I wonder if there are game genie codes that allow you to explore that area more.
I have an explanation for the opening roof in silo. in early stage of development the game was a "shooter on rails" I have a VHS of the early stage and in that part si had like a lift where you go up into the top of that silo
Oh my gosh, I always wondered what those circuit boards were about! That's perfect xD
Love these videos as always.
Legend.
The biggest mystery of goldeneye is how I still haven't played it to this day
Oh man, you haven’t lived. Hahahahaha unfortunately the newly released ones for Xbox and Switch has gotten tons of negative reviews.
@@jameswilson591 yeah and sadly I'm a playstation and pc player so I don't even get to play the rereleases
@@mathprodigy I'm gonna look into that, thanks!
I love this channel.
My memory may be messing with me but I'm sure you could open a panel on one of the missiles with the briefcase or key equipped. I read it in the Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) at the time and am sure I tried it and it worked.
That is a crazy memory! I've never heard of anything like it. But I love the possibility of it.
I think you are thinking of the level with jaws in bonus levels
Sky loading really interesting, learned something new thanks Goose
Very cool. Didn't know any of these things. About the sky textures, could they be used to slightly boost performance in 4P multiplayer?
Very cool, my friend at the time had Golden eye N64, his name is Graham, If I stayed in contact I would for sure send him this video! Very cool
Awesome! Best wishes to Graham!
My Friends
Always great seeing a new goose video.

I have never known about opening the silo doors. Me and my sister would have made so many half life jokes.
10:46 - “Aw, tonight’s just a laggy load…” is the best alternative term for ‘delayed ejaculation’ 😆
the vent/shaft in the beginning of silo.
my wild guess is that at one time in dev maybe on all level or just some.
the intro sequence would not only be a few shot of the level but also how bond enters them.
like Silo would switch between the random level shots we see in game today and a seen of bond entering the level by lowering himself down the shaft/vent by rope like how HECU does in HL1.
Objective f) Launch Missile
Obtain Ourumow's briefcase (launch codes) -> reprogram missile (use one of the computers next to elevator) -> open roof (Ourumow's keycard) -> leave
Beta test: "... no, it takes too long. I cannot finish DLTK mode any more" :(
Or launch missile w roof closed to destroy the place?
Developer doesn't complete a level map 100%
UA-camrs: "What could this mystery mean?"
Muy buen video, con la de veces y años que lo he jugado, nunca me había parado a observar esos detalles.
I remember so many rumors around that darn briefcase... like a "Spyder" gun being in it.
The ladder you can't access, and that it leads to a vent, makes me wonder if the vent was actually supposed to be where the level *starts* at one point in development.
Every time I hear this little intro, makes me want to go hit a “nice shot” in Mario Golf!
lol I like the sticker in the TV layout, it says "I did it (implying shitting/pissing) over your stuff".
Silo is so much fun, thanks for the video! Is it possible to have a plastique not attach to a surface and fail the mission? I swear I've seen it done, but I recently tried to do it, and couldn't.
That can happen with the tracker bug on the Frigate.
"pass him away" if only there was another word ;/
I remember using the key/briefcase to open and close the silo door… I’m sure you had to select it and press Z like a gadget (rather than A or B as mentioned in this vid)… it was a long time ago though!
People trippin over a briefcase, meanwhile Bond holding 800 rounds of ammunition for a pistol.
