    UA-cam is making changes to the way that links work in UA-cam shorts. And this is directly going to cause problems for the Roblox scammers I have been monitoring.
    Roblox scammers izzland (aka mert or izzlint) and clownxiao spam youtube shorts, livestreams, and community posts telling people to get free robux by visiting their scam website. This website either tells you to fill out a survey. Or as you will see in the video, the websites wont even work at all. The power of an illiterate manchild trying to scam kids on Roblox.

    Btw, this isn’t a downgrade. People actually enjoy having to work for something like this.
    Adding extra annoying steps, like redirects or captchas is one of the most effective ways to initiate a dark pattern. People are less likely to click off if “they’ve already done so much”, and so when they get another captcha, they think “wow! well it’s 30 seconds of effort, why not?”, after which the resistance to leaving the page grows.
    I remember seeing a UA-cam video essay, that messed up the audio and had everything playing through one ear. People had to go to their settings and enable mono audio to even listen to the video. It was that person’s best performing and highest viewer retention video ever.

    About the spelling: There is a theory that this may be intentional. The only people who would fall for these scams would likely also not notice the massive red flag that is the language gore these scammers produce, thus saving them a bunch of time on people who might go through some of these steps, but not going far enough for them to turn a profit. Then again, maybe - probably - they are also just brain dead.

    Both UA-cam and Discord seem to make decisions without caring about the community's feedback, makes me wonder how they got so big.

      @ohno5507 8 місяців тому +12

      Because they are largely good services that, generally, would be hard to compete with. No UA-cam or Discord clone could handle the same levels of bandwidth. Not to mention, the average users of these platforms don't care about most of these things. Because I use Discord exclusively to talk to friends, and rarely interact with servers, most stuff doesn't really affect me. Realistically, most of Discord's changes are whatever, and are only upsetting if you have nothing better to care about. Most of YT's changes, with the exception of obnoxious ad practices, usually only impact creators, so the vast majority of the time changes to the platform don't impact most people.

    • @charlix3

      They got so big because they do the unsustainable and impossible. Hosting hundreds of gigabytes of data individually for billions of users at no profit is obviously unsustainable. Discord doesn’t even have ads, they’re working purely from selling your data.

    3:53 that type of ads should be banned as they are literally wasting your time as you have to click multiple times on the part of the website to get to whatever the part you're clicking on does and are the reason i rarely shut off my ad blockers. If Google wants to ban ad blockers they should ban these popup ads, their Google vignette are less annoying than those pieces of shit as with the Google vignette ads you just have to click close and are redirected to where you were supposed to go when clicking on that hyperlink while those ads you have to first close the tab that acts as the ad and click on the hyperlink again to get to the location the hyperlink goes to if it doesn't force multiple ads on you before doing what it is supposed to do

    I wonder, why would these scammers put these "do these things so we can verify that you're not a bot, so that we can give you free [insert premium currency here]"?

    • @TyphinHoofbun
      @TyphinHoofbun 8 місяців тому

      Because the things they ask you to do involve giving your personal information. They start with "Verify you're not a bot" so the victim will think, "Well, obviously I'm not a bot, and it makes sense they don't want bots grabbing all the gift cards and ruining it for real people like me. This is a reasonable thing to ask." So they ask you to sign up for rewards by filling out a survey (and include your email and name, info they can sell), sign up for free trials (with payment information so they can bill you once the trial ends), purchase products (that they get a commission off of), etc.
      The "tasks" start small, surveys and such, so that you become invested. They always keep you at "just one more step", dangling the carrot of "Free gift card" in front of you that they'll never actually give. There will always be some error, some problem. "That last survey didn't register for some reason. Must be a temporary problem. Try again with another offer?" They'll have a multi-level structure that they hide from you at the start. "Complete X offers!" becomes "Okay, you completed X offers, now you've gone from Level 1 to Level 2! Here's bigger offers to level up faster!" becomes "Okay, you're at Level 3, so those early offers don't count anymore, you have to do these more involved things because any bot can click through a survey." becomes "In order to complete this level, book a non-refundable 5-day cruise on this website at a discount and leave a positive review!" or something else absurd.
      Eventually, the victim will drop out, but they don't care because they'll have gotten at least something out of you if you complete even a single step, even if it's just pennies' worth of sellable info. (Package up a couple thousand email addresses plus names, sell the mailing list for $50.) Never do they actually pay anything out, so there's next to no cost for them.

    UA-cam does have some measure to stop Mr Beast scams, you can't put the words MrBeast and mabye some variations in ads. That why they are all "Beast Tasks" or "Beast Rewards"

    Probably best way to deal with fake giveaways is to report every affiliated channel and the actual post, eventually UA-cam might realise that “hey maybe we could probably do something about this” I’m pretty sure there is an “additional information” thing so put in possible suggestions incase anyone at UA-cam reads them

      People have been reporting the Mr. Beast scams en masse for like a year now. You'd think their bots would pick up the word "Mr. Beast" that isn't connected to his channel, or at least that same YouTooz figure art that's on every single one of them, but Christ. I'm convinced they just don't care.

And I remember seeing these comments all the way back in 2009 so it's so funny to see UA-cam act like they have even done the most basic thing to deal with scammers.
