Dr. Kopelman, I had COVID over a year ago and am still experiencing lingering symptoms, including significant hair shedding. I suspect I may have acute telogen effluvium. I just started using 5% minoxidil but understand there could be more hair loss in the coming weeks as part of the process. My hair loss has been drastic, and though my diet is poor due to lingering COVID-induced nausea, I am supplementing and trying to eat as healthily as possible. My dermatologist mentioned that new hair growth is beginning, but my hair continues to fall out. Is there anything additional you would recommend? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I lost my nephew in April and by July my hair loss was crazy. Doctor said all my blood work was fine. It sounds like this is what I have. Why do doctors not know this stuff? It’s been so upsetting but now I feel like I can relax a bit. Thank you so much for this video
I’m truly sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one is an unimaginable stress on the body and mind, and it’s no surprise that your hair started shedding shortly afterward. Grief can absolutely trigger telogen effluvium (TE), where the hair cycle is disrupted by the emotional shock, often showing up a few months after the event. It’s frustrating when doctors don’t connect these dots, but please know that you’re not alone in this experience. TE can be alarming, but it’s usually temporary and tends to resolve as your body and mind begin to heal. For now, try to be gentle with your hair-avoid harsh styling or products-and give yourself grace. Healing from grief takes time, and your body will follow suit. I’m glad the video could offer some reassurance, and if you have any more questions along the way, I’m here to help.
Hello I'm a 40 Years old man .In 2020 I went to a cruise for 7 days , I didn't protect my scalp from the sun and it burned it was very painful. Severe sun exposure .Important to mention before the cruise my hair was perfect and healthy no shedding or thinning. Next 20 days or month it started shedding like crazy all at once . My hair started growing again but thin , weak and short. It's been 4 years I doesnt Shed anymore but it's thin and it doesn't go longer than a certain point , it's like if it was stuck not growing beyond a certain point compared to the other areas of the scalp that didn't suffer , so I can see my scalp.it's very frustrating because before that event my hair was perfect and it hasn't been recovered fully .even though I have hair it's thin after that . I'm taking oral Minoxidil ,oral Finasteride, vitamins and having mesotherapy since last week . Can I recover my density and thickness one day ?
I had a really severe lung infestation in July and by the end of August all of my hair started to become very thin and gray. I have lost so much hair all over my head. I am truly alarmed by it. My blood tests are fine there are no deficiencies found so far (still waiting in the DHT one though). I just wanted to ask what does the hair look like when it falls out under TE condition? There are not enough videos on this topic… Just wonder if there is a way to tell if it’s an androgenic one or not. So far the medical professionals i met have been very confusing…
I’m sorry to hear about the hair shedding you’re experiencing-it sounds truly distressing. Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common reaction to physical stressors on the body, such as severe infections, and it often leads to a diffuse thinning all over the scalp. With TE, hair tends to fall out at the root, meaning you’ll likely notice club hairs (hairs with a small, white bulb at the end) coming out during shedding. This phase generally lasts a few months after the initial stressor, but recovery can begin as soon as the body re-stabilizes. In contrast, androgenetic hair loss typically has a more gradual onset and usually follows a pattern (like receding at the temples or thinning on the crown for men). Androgenetic loss is also influenced by DHT levels, which might be why you’re awaiting that test result. While TE hair sheds diffusely, it doesn’t permanently damage the follicles, so hair regrowth is usually possible once the underlying cause is addressed. Feel free to ask any additional questions. If you want a virtual appointment for a more detailed assessment you can book an appointment with me on my website kopelmanhair.com

Hello, I started noticing hair loss in May of this year. I’ve had multiple stressful events, but the major one was in Feb. I am still losing a lot of hair and noticing hair thinning around my sides. 28 yr old female and normal bloodwork. Derm prescribed minoxidil but it irritates my scalp so much and causes itchiness like crazy. I have noticed for like a week out of each month my hair will stop shedding, but then continue up again. Why is this and how am I not supposed to be stressed about this? It is so depressing and I feel like there’s no end in sight and it’s only getting worse. I stopped the minoxidil but now I’m debating just dealing with the itchiness and greasiness which I hate
But when you take minoxidil it‘s temporary, because when you get off of this, the hair that you gained will fall off and takes you back to the starting point. That is the case when you have male pattern baldnis, but is it the same with TE??? Btw. great video Doc. 😊
You’re right that with male pattern baldness, stopping minoxidil can lead to losing the hair it helped regrow, as it needs to be used continuously to maintain results. However, with telogen effluvium (TE), which is usually a temporary shedding phase caused by stress, illness, or other triggers, minoxidil can help speed up recovery by promoting faster regrowth. Once the underlying cause of TE is resolved, the hair often regrows on its own, so long-term use of minoxidil may not always be necessary.

It's generally safe to use minoxidil and Olux (a corticosteroid foam) together if you have seborrheic dermatitis, but it's important to monitor your scalp for any signs of irritation or worsening of the condition. The corticosteroid in Olux can help manage the inflammation and itching associated with seborrheic dermatitis, while minoxidil promotes hair growth.

yes, this can most certainly be a cause of hair loss and hair thinning. You are addressing the vitamin d deficiency and it should certainly start to improve your hair loss.
Minoxidil is a long-term treatment, and if you stop using it after a year, any hair regrowth you’ve achieved may gradually fall out, and your hair will likely return to its previous state. Minoxidil works by stimulating hair follicles, but once you stop applying it, the stimulation ceases, and hair shedding may occur.

I have heard that applying minoxidil to the scalp on a person suffering from telogen effluvium can initially cause greater hair loss and, once stopped, the hair will return to its starting point. Furthermore, after a period of time, the effects of minoxidil decrease and no longer have an effect. This is true? should it therefore be applied for life?
Yes you are correct, you can have an initial shedding period where the hair that was going to fall out regardless will, and the minoxidil is just pruning your hair to allow the new hair to grow. And the other point you brought up is partially correct, the medicine will still continue to work but regardless we will continue to experience hair loss, hair loss is not completely stopped by taking medication but it does play an important role in slowing the hair loss. Hope this helps address your questions.
Thanks a lot for the answer. Allow me to ask you two more questions: in the case of Telogen effluvium due to stress and taking medications, do you recommend continuing for life even after having found a good result or is it possible that by interrupting the treatment after all the hair has regrown, you can solve the problem completely? Also, is 5% always recommended for a 68 year old woman or can you start with 2%? I live in Italy, here a doctor recommended Carexidil 5% to me, I know that it also makes the hair very greasy.
@@luanap872 5% Rogaine is what we recommend to both men and women. I would recommend continuing it. At the same time I know that applying topically everyday can be annoying, so in that case I would recommend exploring being on oral medication which is easier to take everyday.
