    Why do engine projects start off with a growing list of tasks? We tear into the tired old VW engine to see what we’re dealing with, and quickly find repairs to be made. The long block gets cleaned up, we remove a broken screw with the welder, modify the oil pump, and learn once again that sometimes the old worn out parts are better than new parts. Sigh. Come along for the tragedy and triumph of working on old stuff!

    Great video brother! Crazy that the new piston is smaller....I don't understand why they can't make perfect parts with all the tech advancements we've had in the last 50 years. Awesome job man!

      Thanks CT, it's always great to hear from you! I've been watching the truck camper rescue videos- that was a chore getting that thing out of the woods! Looking forward to see what is done with it. In regards to the pistons, yes! I'm sure they _could_ make good ones and I hope there is someone out there doing so. I'd much rather get my next set from them. I hope all is well at CT's Garage. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Another video that is fun to watch. I have absolutely no clue what the heck you are doing or saying most of the time but it is entertaining. I’ve never used a micrometer. For the ignorant, ( me ) it would have been nice to show me how to read it while you were ”up close and personal” in the video shot. I’m impressed that you can think upside down when I can’t think right side up. Looking forward to see what’s next.

      Hey Ken, thanks for checking out the video! Great idea- it might have been cool to show how the micrometer is read on the first one and then carry on from there. I expect it'll come up again, so I'll keep that in mind. I hope you're having a great weekend!

    Sr. I wish I had a neighbor like you...or that I were your neighbor to learn as much as I could. My bug's engine suddenly decided to pee the oil right through the crankshaft seal, upon further inspection I saw there was a BIG endplay...anyway, I started saving for an engine rebuild...then pandemic struck and I lost my job. There went my hopes to fix my bug. Long story short, I found a very cheap engine with no end play, but nasty as hell and I decided to buy it with idea to clean it and put it in place of the other...and well, just as I started working on it...a fear of screwing things up overcame me and it's been there sitting for almost 3 weeks now. I miss driving my bug and I really don't want to take him to a garage because I really would love to learn how to fix him myself...and well...its either fixing or eating.

    Happy Fourth Of July !!
    Can't wait to hear it rumble to life.
    Meaning no disrespect, but when I learned to surface something on
    a surface plate, I was taught to make a figure eight motion.
    It makes a smoother surface.
    Keep up the good work and videos'

      Hey Steven W, great tip! I usually sand for a while, then rotate the part in my hand 90 degrees, then repeat. I like the figure 8 idea; I think the big thing is to randomize to average out any irregularities in the work piece and/or our grip on the part... we probably aren't holding it as evenly as we think! Thanks for sharing the info, I'll keep this in mind the next time I need to flat a part. I'm looking forward to hearing this thing run too! Thanks for watching and being a part of the channel!

    A suggestion, which I think you will likely do anyway. You mentioned that you didn’t want to dig into the long block, but taking the rockers off and re- torquing the heads if definitely worth doing. Cheers Richard

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Richard, that's a great suggestion and I totally agree. The rockers will be coming off anyway (stay tuned), so that will be my chance. I've been a little apprehensive about pulled studs because this case has the larger 10mm studs without case savers; they're notorious for pulling out. It'll take a little courage, but now is the time. Thanks for the input!

    • @aussiebeatle4049
      @aussiebeatle4049 4 роки тому +1

      Haptic Garage good point about the studs without case savers. This goes to your point about VWs needing lots of maintenance, pull a thread and on and on it goes. Love your approach

    Haha, "We'll Run what we brung." Love the choice to discipline yourself to not go further than needed. It's opens up a can of worms. Also I never trust a mechanic unless they know how to use an analog Micrometer! Nice job!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  4 роки тому

      Hey Skater Stimm, I'm glad you're on board with that decision; there's a big part of me that wants to fix everything I can no matter what, but the bigger picture seems to point this direction for this project. And +1 on the micrometer- couldn't do engine stuff without it!

    I remember back in my 20's when i when through my 4 year tool & die schooling, the telescoping gauges were a challenge to use correctly. Then after we mastered using them , they opened a cabinet with bore gauages ...really. Oh the joy of aftermarket parts.. Good checks and tips with the welder getting those broken tin screws out. The first time i used that method was on a stud located on the bottom of the case for oil cover. cool saying.. Your method on the hub cap clips worked great thanks for sharing that method on how to remove old broken ones and install new clips

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  4 роки тому

      Ha! Sounds like an effective teaching method if not a little aggravating! It would have been great to study this formally; I'm sure your schooling continues to pay off today. Dial bore gauges are great, and the little ball type are cool too for smaller holes. The welding trick works great when it's necessary. A little risky, but effective! I'm glad you got the rivets installed successfully, thanks for the follow up. That one is kinda fun after you get the feel for it. Great to hear from you as always Dan!

    30 years ago ( plus ) replacement parts were better quality and anything not to spec wasn't sold to customers...but sadly we source our parts from places where quality isn't important or possible... So no suprise that new parts are imperfect. Should be expected nowadays where cheap price is the standard your only given.... Used to be different..and it could be if we returned to parts made in our continent ( North America )....

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Yup. Shopping on price alone brings shoddy goods to the market. It's been impressive to see our hobby catch on to this fact over the last couple decades and increasingly prioritize results in their purchases.
