Pull it apart! For sure! Beautiful specimen. Mark is a gem himself, so fun to see him on the channel!

I would not cut it! Its rare to get a piece like that, and once you cut it, its gone forever. There's already a lot of cut opal. Plus, just knowing there's beauty unseen inside of it can be fun to think about, and can be as poetic as the seen beauty of stones.
Cool guy, i learned a lot! Another great vid from you guys👍

It would be fun to peel off layers and also keep a solid piece as a specimen. Fabulous episode! Thank you Rebecca and Mark!

I agree with all who say 'don't cut it.' At most, gently buff off, sand, shave or peel off the layers of gypsum and create a nicely custom-made high polished gold (or frosted finish brass) cone to hold it upright like the flame light held by the Statue of Liberty.

I'm a huge fan of mineral specimens, so no cutting is my vote! Nice mineral specimens are rarer just given everyone is itching to break it up into smaller/more marketable pieces, which can be nice. But it's also destructive and just makes the remaining specimens even more special.

Always good to hear an Aussie accent. 🇦🇺 Makes me proud. Opals are just SO incredible. Still waiting for an in depth Aussie special - we are so mineral rich haha. Earth's treasures indeed!

Usually I’m all for keeping specimens as specimens, but in this case I think there is more beauty to be had with at least cutting away some of the host rock and exposing more of the opal!

This is my favorite video! I didn’t realize opal is the only gem formed from the top down! I could just stare at opal all day long. Keep the specimen as it is.

Take that sucker apart! Have it cut into beautiful gemstones and maybe sell some rough for the lapidary! That is such a beautiful piece! But I really like the boulder opal! Which is more expensive? The opal like lightning ridge, or boulder opal? Thanks for this episode. I'm literally drooling! Happy Holidays!🎄

I’m trying to arrange a trip to Virgin Valley, I know fire opal is not as easy a stone to keep but I love the history and prehistoric life associated with this opal deposit there, and since I’m only 5 hours away, I should take advantage.

Thanks for a wonderful video about Opals.
    - Since Royal Blue is my favorite colour. Then Opal is my favorite gemstone and Sapphire in second place.
    - And yes, remove everything and carve out the Opal. So that everyone can see the whole Opal.💯👍💯
    Btw, thank you for sharing😁

As an Opal cutter I have only one answer to that question.
    Cut the stone's.
It's so big you can cut a dozen stones out if it and still have a huge specimen to boot.
