  • Today we are talking about Phalaenopsis orchids which produce a terminal spike. Why this happens and what do we do about it?
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
Phalaenopsis orchids usually produce spikes from the sides of their axis, under the leaves. Sometimes the spike emerges from the crown of the orchid and damages it. I believe this is due to the inability of the spike to break through the leaf cuticle and develop normally.
The orchids will behave just like in the case of crown rot, they will try to produce keikis. Here is how to treat crown rot on an orchid • How to save Orchids fr...
In the end we are trying to obtain a keiki, either from the base, or the spike and even from the crown.
How to remove oil from orchid leaves • How to remove oil from...

I used to work in a plant nursery that sold orchids shipped in from orchid growers. We always found the terminal spike orchids came in batches - 2 or 3 of one variety would have terminals and if we grew the others on for a while, they would also produce terminals. I don't know if it is a genetic fault or if too much growth hormone is applied in the originating nursery, but having seen that, if I spot a terminal spike on an orchid in a shop now, I won't buy that variety even if other plants of that variety don't have a terminal spike, because I feel they have a very high chance of developing one in future.I also noticed the multifloras were particularly prone to terminal spikes, and also those with very strongly marked/patterned flowers.

I know this was two years ago but I have really got into orchids since I have been shielding in the last 12 months so thank you for this info - just a pity I didn't see this video before and read your message. Sadly I have bought one of these with beautiful little flowers but anyway I will remember from now on. Thanks again.

Hi! I loved learning about this! Please make a video pack on sick orchids. I know you have lots of videos on sick orchids but I have never located the issues I have on them, such as: good roots and leathery leaves; or goof leaves, good roots and small round discolorations on the leaves; or orchids that have not grown in a long time. I love the hardyness of phals, but once I get the leathery leaves, I have not been able to get them to recovery from that.
    Thank you!!

Hi Danny. My mom was gifted with phal where the center was rotted, but had beautiful flowers, orchids from the supermarket. The media upon repotting smelled like raw sewage. Eventually because this phal had a lot of spunk grew a basal keiki as well as keiki at the crown. Buy one get two free 🙈. Anyways waiting for right time to cut off keiki’s and life on their own.
😭😭 Have to watch reruns 🤧
    Enjoy day off 🙂🙃
Ever heard of Dendrobium parishii 'Petaloid' Next in my list.

One of my miniphals has a crown keiki too! I didn't realise what it was until I watched this video, I think there must have been some damage to the main growth point on the crown. At first I thought it was a terminal spike but it turned out to be a new crown, growing out from a fold in the top of the old crown. It looks the same as the orchid you showed in this video. Didn't realise orchids could do that.

A "terminal spike" is so named because it comes from the central growth point of the orchid. This growth point is called a "terminal bud" .
The orchid in question will usually continue to grow, but instead of growing from this terminus, it will make basal growths.

Hi Danny, I purchased an orchid that was fine last year a Phalaenopsis and it grew well had spiked and flowers then after the flowers died I cut the spike and the plant just started failing. Now, that orchid has leaves and has grown roots out side the pot. The crown seemed to be damaged but the plant is still trying to grow.

Hi Dani! What about a Phal that grew a keiki and the keiki has a terminal flower spike?! I got this crazy situation happening on my garden.
It is so bizarre that the spike managed to grow taking upwards one of the keiki leaves.... The is a leaf in the middle of the spike...
I have found no literature on this and I have no idea of what to expect of the future of this plant. The mother plant looks as it always did, no signs of suffering of any ailments or bugs.

I was given a very large white Phal that has a terminal spike last Valentine’s Day. It grew what I thought was a keiki off the side of the plant but it has no roots and it almost looks like a branch. It’s very large as big as some of my grown Phals. Then to add to the weirdness it has grown a flower spike at the top of the terminal spike, below a small leaf the terminal spike tried to grow. I’m going to just wait and see what happens. What do you guys think about wrapping the branch/keiki in spaghnum moss soaked in rooting solution? Or should I just leave it to grow indefinitely on the mother plant?

I have a phal with a terminal spike. It produced a keiki that is still attached to the mother. The orchid just has one leaf and has two spikes. I have another phal with a basal keiki. It is still attached. The orchid has four leaves and look fine. But it hasn't grown new leaves. Finally I have a phal with a 4 sticks. One keiki is growing from one of them. The other three are blossoming. The orchid looks very healthy but do you think is going to die soon? Are all of them going to die?

This is very interesting. So I wonder, can you see a spike tunneling up the stem and if it gets to the second or third leaf could you take evasive action and cut the stem to release it and save your crown?

I have been waiting for months while it's producing its own roots and slightly stressing the mother plant So I guess I will cut it off now and throw it away... :(

My orchid developed a keiki on a flower spike. The keiki then developed 2 spikes before it had any roots and a little later but before it was ready to be put in a pot, a terminal spike. So weird.

  • @ZanesWildflora

I think a terminal spike is not a normal spike travelling along the axis and destroying the crown. I might be very well wrong, but according to my logic and experience, since most if not all of the terminal spikes I saw had one or two smaller leaves on the spike itself (once I saw an impressive 10 cm leaf on the lowest node of a terminal spike), they really looked like the crown was creating the spike and since it normally produces leaves, the reminiscence of that shows as a few small leaves where the lower 1-2 nodes should be. And I've seen many regular spikes growing out from the side of the axis, and only 1-2 had those tiny leaves, most of them have only nodes. So if terminal spikes would be normal spikes, there would be no smaller leaves taking over the place of the lower nodes.
But I'm not saying you're not right, I just wanted to share the difference I saw between terminal and normal spikes. Also I've seen normal spikes not punching through the leaf, but travelling up next to the crown, and they looked different to me than terminal spikes. They might be terminal-but-not-really spikes :)

    • @JamesThomas-qd7hp
      @JamesThomas-qd7hp 5 років тому +2

dendrobiums grow new canes from the base and can stop growing leaves once the cane is mature. Depending on which dendrobium you have, it can take months for a cane to develop. I would not suggest cutting any canes if they are green, stiff and plump because they are the energy reserves for the next canes.

I know this video is 4 years old but I just bought a mini phalenopsis from a big box store, and it has a terminal spike with a leaf on it. I'm hoping it will become a keiki, or it will grow a basal keiki.
Since it's a mini, am I correct in guessing it has about one year left? I read that normal sized phals have 2-3 years left once they go terminal.

    Hi Danny,
While watching this video I realised I bought a gorgeous Phal with a terminal spike. How sad am I? Now I know why it was 5 eus. It's a beautiful lavender with burnt orange lip. It also has tiny, tiny pinprick sized dots covering the centre of the flower and the lip.
I will wait as long as I need to to see what will happen. Thanks for the information and ideas. Oh, one more weird thing, it has two flower spikes, and the normal spike's blooms are opening in the usual pattern with three yet to be opened and four nodes. However, the terminal spike has no nodes :( and the buds are just starting to open. When I brought it home it had nine healthy buds. Very odd indeed. Jasmine
