Not only does the soldier have no arms or legs, he can't see speak or hear and the doctors think he's completely brain-dead and are keeping him alive as an experiment but he knows everything that's going on around him. You can watch the movie on UA-cam for free Johnny got his gun is really good but hard to watch and Metallica bought the rights to the movie so they could use the Clips in their music video
I have the book in the basement, honestly I'm not sure I wanna crack it open (author Dalton Trumbo?)
@@NotBenCoultry yep that’s the author.
How does he know everything that's going on around him if he can' hear or see and he "can't tell if this true or dream"?
@@SatEight he doesn't need to hear or see. He knows he can't see or hear and he can just feel them moving his body around.. 😒
And the nurse that wants to honor his wishes and let him die...Wow, it is just a traumatic story and such a great song based on the story.
Based on the book, Johnny Got His Gun, which was inspired by a true story of a soldier in Canada. Then made into a movie in 1971 which is where the clips are from.
Metallica didn't just use the clips. They bought the rights to the movie so there would be no copyright infringement. #BossMoves
i mean doctors have sworn an oath to keep someone alive to the best of their abilities, but what sense does make to keep someone alive that lost his legs, arms, eyesight, ability to speak and most of the actual face. just end that misery.
@@HellBrYnger their only oath is the hippocratic oath to do no harm and they are definitely harming him so disturbing
@@janiepowell3218 I believe that was Lars Ulrich's idea. He's quite crafty when it comes to money.
@@sheevpalpatine2128 so cute that people still think, doctors would swear an oath.

Enter Sandman. Live version in Russia.
Nah creeping death live in Russia is way better
The key lyric to this song is "Now the world is gone, Im just one" The song is about him being trapped in his own mind isolated from the world and how terrifying that situation would be.
Metallica is a rabbit hole worth going down. "One" is a great song. Try "Fade to Black," "Nothing Else Matters," "Master of Puppets."
We're listening to 'One', remember?
This song is actually about a marine who lost all of his limbs, his sight, his hearing. He is stuck in a hospital bed and all his senses are gone. It's one of Metallica's best songs but also one of their most disturbing.
You say good things but do you ?.....
This was Metallica's first ever music video, even though it was their fourth album.
Back in the day Metallica frontman James Hetfield said: "I liked the fact that people didn't know what to say after they watched it..."
I remember him telling a story about a fan coming up to him, and spitting him in the face.. Apparently they had "sold out" because they made music videos 😅
Wonder if he's still mad, now that they've become one of the most successful and iconic bands of all time 🤷♂️
Master of Puppets should be your next stop, one of the best heavy metal songs in history, you'll like it.
Van Canto's a cappella cover of Master of Puppets is fantastic! Great cover for an incredible song
I agree! I love master of puppets! Great song!
Absolutely
My favorite off of Master of Puppets is Welcome Home/Sanitarium
@@gbaumessr.8435 I can't love that comment enough, it's absolutely the best song of the album.
the soldier had his arms, legs, eyes, hearing and voice taken by a land mine explosion, but the doctors won't let him die.
You forgot his mouth/jaw. His whole face was gone.
The doctors think he’s brain dead. Not knowing he was conscious. Until he started doing morse code with his head.
Although the price is landmine, the story from the book and film Johnny got his gun is an artillery shell, you can see it her the shell coming in in the film footage.
WWI mutilation
They are very Heavy Metal a lot of their songs are extremely deep.
A good one to watch is them live in Moscow 1991, song is Enter Sandman. 1.6 million people in the crowd. Russians were no longer under Communism rule, this music was agent the law.
Yes,PLEASE.

"Running blind through killing fields bred to kill them all. Victim of what said should be..a servant til I fall." Disposable Heroes FIRE!!!!!

"I cannot live, I cannot die, trapped in myself, body's my holding cell" puts the frame of mind of this soldier who lost his arms, legs, sight, hearing, speech...he lost everything but his mind. It's talking about a man without his physical senses and how trapped he is to the point he wants to die just to end the torture of loneliness and sensory deprivation "I can't tell if I'm awake or dreaming."
He also had brain damage and lost his Cerebrum...so his whole body was numb and couldn't feel anything...no touching......possibly the pain of fear since he was still conscious...but i'm not sure about physical pain
@@KingOfGamesss not in the movie. A nurse actually communicates to him via spelling out 'Merry Christmas' on his chest at one point. He also could tell when a heavier nurse was nearby due to the vibrations, and when it was day or night via feeling (or not feeling) the sun through the window. He still couldn't tell exactly when he was awake or asleep, even explained in movie at one point as he's talking to "Jesus" in what was a dream, explaining that as he no longer has eyes, sinuses or a nose, he doesn't have the ability to feel drowsy. He knew they amputated what was left of his limbs because, as he said "they just went and chopped off everything." In movie, he says in his mind "I need those!" and internally screams as they didn't bother to sedate him (because why would they if they didn't think he could feel) before chopping off the remainder of his limbs.

What IS 'Democracy'? x2
It's got something to do with young Men killing each other (I believe)

@@KingOfGamesss Thanks. I know the lyrics. I used to watch this on MTV back when it was new. I also know the movie it's based off of, as well as the book that the movie was based off of. The doctors got it wrong, almost from the very beginning.

James Hetfield - vocals and rhythm guitar
Kirk Hammet - lead guitar
Jason Newstead - bass guitar
Lars Ulrich - drums
But not really Jason Newsted on bass guitar.
I like Cliff Burton & Robert T on bass
When I was a teen listening to Metallica in the 80's, I LOVED turning my friends onto their music. Of course right? We ALL loved turning our friends the music that moves us. I guess that's why these "reaction videos" work so well. - Nice channel.
Never hearing of Metallica is like not ever hearing Santa claus
LMAO! Exactly!
It'd be like saying you never heard of Michael Jackson or Elvis.
@@NotSoFast71 Haha! Seriously!
@@NotSoFast71 the thing is... Most people heard about them but not everyone was interested in learning about it
Hahahahahahaha Right??
One of their best songs. Couldn't tell you how many Thousands of times I've heard this song. #Metallica! ♥️🤘
I saw the movie in the 70s as a little kid. Johnny got his gun. Wow that's not an afternoon Sunday tv movie for a kid...but impacful
Finally, someone reacts to this video and GETS it the very first time. Most people just have no idea how layered this video is. Well done 👍🏻
I remember watching one of those "kids react" videos with this song, and there was one little girl who is the only person that's ever clicked on to the drumming representing or sounding like machine guns.
One of the best Metallica songs. The lyrics hit deep.
For Metallica. Check out Four Horseman, No Remorse, Jump in the Fire, Metal Militia, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Am I Evil, Whiskey in the Jar, Until it Sleeps, and King Nothing.
The hard will hit real soon, wait for it. 6 minutes in.
You nailed it with this reaction👍🏻. Next... “Fade to Black” by Metallica . Lead singer is James Hetfield and he is one of the best lyricist IMO.
YES Metallica!!!! Enter Sandman has to be next. Also Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, Master of Puppets, Hero of the Day, also Seek and Destroy
Yes sir! A soldier no arms no legs can't hear or see.

I can't imagine going through my life without any Metallica.
Not only is this an epic song, the video is as epic. Can't wait to see the reaction.
as a Veteran of iraq/afgan this song hits deeply. its so disturbing that it is simply a masterpiece for whom it was ment for. Those Who Served in War never come back whole.
It's not just "one arm, one leg", the guy lost both arms, both legs, his sight, his hearing, and the power of speech. In the beginning of the video he's described as being "A piece of meat that just keeps on living". He's literally trapped inside the cell of his own body. The only way he can communicate is by blinking in morse code. He tries to tell people that he wants to die, but nobody will listen except eventually the nurse. She tries to kill him, but is stopped. The video is based on a book called "Johnny Got His Gun", and a lot of the footage is from the movie adaptation.
Metallica is the best, thank you for your reaction, loved it!
Like a lot of people, the video for “One” was my first exposure to Metallica. It was back in the day when MTV actually showed music videos. I think this is my favorite music video ever- the stark black and white performance part, the perfect-fit scenes from “Johnny Got His Gun”, and of course, a fantastic song. It’s also my favorite Kirk Hammett solo…and he’s a guy with a lot of amazing solos.
This song is based on the movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is based on the 1939 novel of the same name. It's a heartwrenching study of loneliness and pain and the war machine.
I love this song! Every time I listen to it I feel so grateful for all the blessings in my life. The instrumentals are beautiful. Nothing else matters is another one that takes you on a journey.
Rap and Metal somehow go hand in hand - welcome this new metal head :)
The doctors think hes not in there...but HE IS...OMGOODNESSGRACIOUSALIVE .. GRACIOUS
AND AFTER ALL THAT SUFFERING THEY MAKE HIM A SIDE SHOW IN THE CIRCUS...OH NOO
And now you know Metallica. I discovered them late also. They have much more. Great reaction.
They are the tops one. And all there songs have a deep meaning
Metallica rules!!! greetings from Costa Rica!
"One" is a great introduction to Metallica. Especially with how "deep" this song is and how well it ties together with the "Johnny Got His Gun" footage in the video.
Metalica is definitely one of the masters of making metal music. I suggest listening to anything from them that you can.
One of the best pieces of music ever written IMHO. The late 80's was a great period to be a metallica fan.
Never pause a Kirk Hammett solo.
Its almost illegal 👍
Kirk's not that great relax lmao

I think I was 16 when this video came out. The first time I saw it it scared the hell out of me. You could not turn on MTV without seeing it for it seemed like months. They are in my top 4 bands. They are metal gods at their best. I've seen alot of reactors doing this song and I think your the only ONE who really got the song. Most don't. They have a huge catalog. Have fun. I'll be watching. Oh, and more AC/DC too please.
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now. I saw your initial hesitation in "not liking" music that wasn't rap... and the truth is you just never listened to it or had the desire to appreciate it for the art that it is. I'm seeing your horizons broaden right before my eyes. I love seeing you unsure in the beginning of a video & headbanging or rocking out in the middle... and by the end - you're a fan. I love it. Music is so universal. In every culture. It brings happiness and is a great form of expression. I look forward to watching you on this musical journey & as you and your girl start your family. How exciting!!! Love this reaction & your channel.
Dude keep those spirits highs and your instincts are spot on when you based them off that into trust that conscious. Like seeing this when I get home from work man keep the faith. Ac/Dc - Gone Shooting
The whole album "Metallica... and justice for all" is a must have album! Even if you are not a metal fan! It's worth every second and every penny! :-) Cheers from Germany!

Welcome to the incredible world that is Metallica. Not all metal bands are created equal. 🤟

Weird I was going to request this but was really unsure if you were ready because you haven't been broken into a lot of hard rock. Enter the sandman is another awesome one to listen to. Live ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Had to read "Johnny Got His Gun" back in high school in the early 70's. 😳 Worth a read! He's finally able to communicate by tapping out Morris' Code with the back of his head and an older nurse recognizes it...
From a vet and life long MUSIC fan, your reaction to this got you another sub!!! Keep it up.
Let's see what this hard rock is all about.....LOL....You really made me smile :D
James Singer, Kirk lead guitar, Lars drums, Jason Bass-Cliff bass
So the visual aspects are from a movie called Johnny Got His Gun.
The song, is about a soldier who went to war, and was injured yes. Not sure if you caught all of the context. He has NO arms. No legs, he can not hear, see or speak. He is a conscious torso with no way of communicating. Eventually he blinks SOS in Morse code. Then Kill me, over and over.
At one point, the doctor asks the military commander ( not sure of rank but whatever) if he has anything to relay to him. The Military shifts the blame to the doctors, stating that he is a product of the medical profession (keeping him alive) not of his profession ( being in the military). It truly is a deep song. The soldier just wants to die. He is trapped inside himself. Zero senses. He just wants to die, but can't. The saddest part is the end when they are all having their party, and he is locked up, alone. To him there is nothing else. He is his entire world. He is, ONE.

That was the Army Chaplain, not the commanding officer... "Don't you have some message for him, Padre?" And the chaplain, who obviously can't figure out how to deliver a message of hope to the wounded soldier who was kept alive only through medical intervention, passes the buck by saying, "He is a product of your profession, not mine." In other words, if you docs hadn't "helped" this badly wounded man, he'd have gone on to his reward, which probably would have been better all around.
Nothing Else Matters n The Unforgiven are another great songs
Next masterpiece from Metallica - To live is to die ... 😎👍
And justice for all rocks!! All the album! 🔥💥👌
Nice to see ya boy warming up to heavier rock
Kirk Hammet is very very underrated guitarist in my opinion. Seen these dudes like 12 times in concert and they never fail to deliver!!!

James Hetfield is the lead singer and guitarist, Lars Ulrich is the drummer and Kirk Hammet is the lead guitarist, in this video the bassist is Jason Newsted but their current bassist is Robert Trujillo I think. I remember in High School hurrying home to watch the Mtv countdown to see if this video, their first ever because before this they'd completely rejected music videos, was STILL at number one on the countdown. I can't remember how long but it was up there forever and my first introduction to real metal. I graduated in 87. I'm really enjoying watching you experience the music from my generation for the first time. You should definitely try out more grunge. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana, it's all great in my personal opinion.
Robert is their cirrent bassist, yes
And, Cliff Burton RIP was the original bassist... And Dave Mustaine was the original guitarist... Only for writing the first album, and then went on to start Megadeth... There is the back story, to all the band members over Metallica's illustrious career !

These guys have been around a long time and I’ve been a huge fan since about 1984 when I first heard them. They are still making albums and touring! And they still kill it live! You could probably do a Metallica song a day for the next year to get through all their albums. Their songs always have deep lyrics too. Welcome welcome dude! Us Metallica fans are pretty die hard and I’m sure would love to watch more reactions!
Current line up- James hetfield is singer and guitar. Kirk Hammett is lead guitar. Lars ulrich is drums and current bassist is Robert Trujillo. Original bassist was cliff burton followed by jason newstead(the one in this video). Hetfield is also known as “the riff master” and “papa het “

It's a world war 1 soldier who lost both his arms and legs, his sight, speech, hearing(his body is basically a dark prison). The song is based on a book and scenes from the movie version are what are in this video.

New subscriber. I'm 57 n a rock fan. You have good music interpretations n intelligence. I've seen Metallica years ago n you taught me a thing or two. Continued success with your growing channel
A good follow-up to this now would be Megadeth's "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due," which came out two years later and in some ways is an attempt to respond to this - both heavy thrash masterpieces about how war sucks.
":51 seconds in and I think this song is going to have deep meaning...."
I know you've seen the other responses to this by now but you nailed it 100% on "a lot of meaning".
This is also a song that needs to be experienced live to get the "full" feeling. The pyro, the double bass pounding your chest, the lights, everything.
I've seen it 10 times live and it still takes my breath away.
This is based off the book Johnny Got His Gun. (Alot of early Metallica songs were based off written work that had an effect on them, their song For Whom The Bell Tolls was originally a Hemingway poem). The black and white movie scenes you see are from the film by the same name. Long story short: Soldier goes into WW1, steps on a landmine, loses his sight, speech, hearing, arms, legs, and is left alive and alone with only his thoughts. (in the movie they show a mortar falling on him, for visual effect ((7:43))).
The book/film then goes into first-person perspective and details how when you can't see, hear, move, or speak, it becomes difficult to tell when you're actually awake and thinking of memories, or asleep and having dreams/nightmares.
Eventually he daydreams talking to his father, and his father reminds him that he knows Morse Code (7:56). He then realizes he can communicate to the outside world by hitting his head against his pillow to type out messages. His only message is begging anyone around him to kill him (8:38) but this creates a new problem. Suddenly everyone realizes that he's conscious, he understands what is happening to him. Before this they thought he was completely catatonic, but now they have to make a choice. They must decide if they keep him alive or allow him to expire.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Now they suddenly have to take responsibility for him. But who is responsible? The General who sent him into combat or the Doctor who is keeping him alive? ("He's the product of your profession, not mine." ((8:50)) Nobody wants to be held responsible for the state he's in.
The solution?
They stick him in a closet and have a nurse come by periodically to make sure he's still alive....Still suffering..but still alive...
As you may have guessed, this was originally an anti-war novel.
Danzig - Mother is another banger! The lead singer is a beast! 💪. Rob Zombie - Dragula will get you moving as well
They had to rename that Danzig song to Birthing Person.
Loving your reactions!

There is a version this video that has all of the lyrics and words. Can be helpful for new listeners.
enjoyed your reaction man.
The song is based on the book "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The scenes in the music video are from the movie, which was also directed by the author of the book. It's about a WWI soldier who is blown up by artillery fire on the front lines and loses his arms, legs, sight, hearing, and ability to speak. He is completely immobilized, stuck in a hospital bed, trapped inside his mind, with nothing but his memories of his life before the war to keep him company. He's a prisoner in his own body and wants to die, so he starts communicating to the doctors and nurses in Morse code, saying "Kill me." Hence the lyrics, "Tied to machines that make me be, Cut this life off from me." I know, creepy as hell, but also super interesting. The band is James Hetfield (rhythm guitar/vocals), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar), Jason Newsted (bass guitar, he's no longer in the band), and Lars Ulrich (drums).
The movie used in the video is Johnny Got His Gun, James Hetfield/Rythm Guitar Vocals wrote the song from the soldiers perspective, Kirk Hammett, Lead Guitar, Lars Ulrich Drums, Jason Newsted on Bass 😎
When I first saw this years ago, I had to watch it a few times to wrap my head around the visuals. Great understanding on your part. Bless you for this Reaction. BTW, Lars Ulrich, the drummer, was one of my fave rockers out there.
This is from an old film, alot of the background is from that which is a story about a soldier who is locked in after a battlefield injury. The lyrics are from the soldiers point of view. This whole album is a masterpiece, along with master of puppets and ride the lightning albums. They were the 2nd to 4th and when they were at the peak. Alot of the style comes from cliff burton, the bass player who was killed in a tour bus crash, so afterwards the group lost a big chunk of talent and never quite got to the same level. Now, they are awesome, back then they were the best.
Song is based on a book called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a soldier whose injuries leave him apparently in a coma but he's actually aware of what's happening but can't communicate and just wishes to die.
Hey! Loved your reaction.... Mama Rocker here! Kinda brush the meaning of rock metal prog songs.
So much going on!
So much of rap came from rock. Then take the time.... cheers
The rabbit hole of music
METALLICA is awesome!!! Dude..... they have a bunch of great stuff!!!!
If you want to be blown away, you HAVE to react to Metallica : "Enter Sandman", and it absolutely has to be the live in Moscow video. (Though I would definitely follow it up with the official video, because its good too). Seriously. You will be amazed.
I watched the film it broke my heart.
