    Thanks Will, for your insight into this lens, I have bought it as well . I am working in Holland but I am travelling home to Scotland tomorrow so will be able to get my hands on it Saturday for the first time. Can't wait to try it out for landscapes. Keep up the good work.

    This lens is impressive. Way lighter than the older Nikon 14-24 2.8 and a solution to take filters. I have an Olympus camera and the other zooms in the system do well with go light philosophy but the 7-14 2.8 is 534 grams which compared well to the old 14-24, but I think this new one Nikon is 620 grams which is pretty amazing since it covers the full frame sensor and everyone seems to be giving it top marks in their reviews. If I switch systems in the future I may go to the Z mount to get this lens. Thanks for the review.

    Great Video Will! I bought the same lens a couple months ago and I couldn't be happier. I bought the Kase Wolverine Pro 112mm 5 Filter kit with travel case off of Amazon for $599 and its absolutely awesome. I also bought the Haida insert kit off of eBay for $150. It came with the swappable insert carriage and also 4 different ND filters all the way up to ND1000. It works great in concert with the Kase filters. I know they are expensive but when you jump into the deep end by buying this great lens you don't want to miss out on some of what the lens has to offer with the best filters. I know Nisi has great stuff too but the color cast is a bit blue on all the Nisi stuff I've seen for this lens. All my Kase filters have absolutely NO color cast at all. Anyway... Loved your video and I intend on doing some Astro for the first time this year and I will need as much help as I can get. I herd that the best time of the year for it is around June-July. Is that right?

      I'll have to look into your filter setup. I'm thinking I might actually try and get something in the next week as I'll be at Acadia NP and might want to take something with the water blurred. I use a breakthrough filter for my 24-70mm and it's been incredible. I was going to look into using their 100mm square filter with the NiSi mount assuming it fits. I'll look into the Kase stuff though too! I'm with you on filters being worth the money when combined with a good lens.
      Milky way shots are great all year in my opinion, although the core is completely visible from March-September. You just get different shots depending on the timing. Also depends on if you're a night owl or early bird. In March you can get the shots of it arching above the horizon before sunrise, but I June you can get a similar shot just after Sunset. Fall and Winter surprise me at how I like some of the softer not so much in your face shots of the less dense portions of the Milky Way. The Photopills app is great for planning out shots with the location of the Milky Way.

    nice! :) thanks for the update... love the milky way pano! still saving money for this astro beast 🤩also, i can't wait for an update/video on filters on the lens, especially some data on vignetting/sharpness etc. would be a blast! what external shutter are you using? best, nicolas

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I need to get better with my pano's and actually taking them in general ha. You'll be super happy with it once you get it! I'm still on the fence with filters. I was in Acadia NP all last week and there were a handful of times I would have loved to have had an ND filter on it and many times to have a CP on it. I'm still not convinced how well a CP is going to work on it, but I feel like I'm inching closer to getting one of each.
      For a shutter release I've been using this one: amzn.to/3hNOoj5
      There's probably better out there, but it's worked great for me so far. Next time I get a new one I'll get something that can shoot at a shorter interval than 1 second.

    Interesting to see that somebody else have noticed the switch off/on to get the stars in focus with the Z system. I noticed it happened also with my Z 24-70 F2.8 lens when switching between lenses during a night session with northern lights, and I wondered if it was just a coincidence. Not sure if this works with all of the Z lenses. But now I need to try this with my new 14-24 as well since I had a bit of struggle to find perfect focus on the stars with that lens on my first night out.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto  3 роки тому

      Ya I was really surprised it worked. I had heard someone else talk about it in a video a while back, but I was hesitant to try it and rely on it. Seems to work really well though and supposedly works with all Nikon Z lenses. I'll be shooting some tracked shots with the 24-70mm kit lens next week so I'll know for sure after that if it works.

    I chose the 20mm f1.8 >. far brighter at f1.8 than f2.8 at the Milky Way but that 14 - 24 is a beaut but I use the 14-30 f4 as my landscapes are shot at f8-say f16

      @willchaneyphoto  3 роки тому

      Ya they're both great lenses. I wouldnt be surprised if one day I ended up getting the 20mm just to have it. But with how lite I like to travel, it just turns into one extra thing to carry for me. I also found I liked being able to adjust the focal length for my Astro shots.

      @@willchaneyphoto The Z 20 f1.8 is the best astro lens Nikon has ever made, and in truth its a bit of an anomaly as a lens overall. You really cant compare the Z 14-24 f2.8 to it. Plus filters are kind of a problem on the Z 14-24 f2.8. And its heavier, and its more expensive, and the extra zoom range is not really a thing. The Z 20 f1.8 is sharper, so even cropped in to 24mm equivalent I doubt there is any advantage. Anything wider than 18mm or so gets unacceptably distorted, so while it is nice to be able to go wider I rarely end up using it unless I specifically want the artistic effect (which is never for astro). When you have been doing this for a while, it becomes clear that the 14-24 f2.8's are really just for rich dentists and brag queens. You are better off with an ultra wide fast prime for the dark and an ultra wide to wide zoom f4 for everything else. IMO, the Z 14-30 f4 is superior to the Z 14-24 f2.8 in any case. Its just a better overall lens, and Nikon really nailed it on that one too.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto  3 роки тому +1

      No doubt the Z20 is an incredible lens. I loved every image I took with it, however I also have had the same reaction to every shot I've taken with the 14-24mm. So for me it just came down to how many lenses do I want to carry when I travel. I'm a lite packer so spending approximately the same amount on two different lenses that were going to get me slighly better results wasn't the route I wanted to go :)

      @@willchaneyphoto Three things. The Z 20 f1.8 and Z 14-30 f4 is a lot more capable combination than the Z 14-24 f2.8. Its really not even close. Its a lot more capability that will yield noticeably better results in the right hands. Second, its cheaper. This is the first time we are seeing the Z 14-24 f2.8 on sale (which is incredible for a lens that really just came out, and not a good sign). Still, the Z 20 and Z 14-30 combo is $150 cheaper (on their sale prices). That is not approximately the same price. Its $150 cheaper. Third, the Z 14-24 f2.8 is larger and heavier than either of those lenses. Will you ever realistically need to carry both lenses on a single outing? No, not really. That is part of the lie people tell themselves. There is a unique use case for the Z 20 f1.8, and there is a unique use case for the Z 14-30 f4. Yes, either can be used for either, and the Z 14-24 f2.8 can be used for either as well. But the Z 14-24 f2.8 is not the best lens in any case and no matter how you analyze it. Its not as fast, does not have as much zoom range, its not as sharp, its not as light, its not as small, it does not take standard filters, its more expensive, it has more coma, and on and on. I am not trying to be argumentative here. If it works for you that is great. But this isn't the same 'ole argument it used to be. The ultra wide to wide f4 and variable aperture zooms of the past were often quite poor vs their f2.8 counterparts, and also against the similar focal length primes. Ultra wide and wide primes were often very lackluster as well (the F 20 f1.8G is a notable exception). This is simply not true anymore. The Z 20 f1.8 destroys every single other ultra wide to wide zoom and prime made for FF...period, end of story. The truth is that it is essentially a zoom lens, because the resolving power is so incredibly high. I am 100% comfortable cropping to 35mm-ish equivalent. But when you just want a zoom and it is not pitch black, the Z 14-30 f4 is the king of flexibility while retaining most of that IQ. It really is a paradigm shift. Nikon engineered those two lenses so well, that they have essentially rendered the 14-24 f2.8 obsolete. The same can be said for the 24-70 f2.8. The Z 20 f1.8, Z 50 f1.8, and Z 24-70 f4 are so good that the 24-70 f2.8 just does not make senses any more at its price point. The only trinity lens that still has a place is the Z 70-200 f2.8, well, at least until we get the Z 100-400. We will see. If Nikon nails the engineering on that one, the entire trinity will be effectively obsolete. I'm sure the YT shills will not like this one bit.

      @@KungPowEnterFist I agree with @free88. I use the 20mm F1.8 for most milky way shots with foreground. Although at F1.8, my pictures look like daylight at 15-20 second exposure. I use a Rokinon 14mm F2.4 when I need wider angle to capture more of the sky and milky way. I dont like having to carry 2 lenses though at night and keep changing from a Z lens to a FTZ lens. That is a pain and I live with it. The 14-30mm F4 is fine if you use a tracker with longer exposure. But then you have to polar align and spend a lot of time setting it up first.

    I rented this lens for 7 days for my trip to Greece and Venice and to test it out and I dont think theyre even worth $1000 or 1300 EUR.
    I just do photography whenever i travel (im not an expert) and i found my ''Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR'' doing a better job than the 14-24mm. I own a Nikon z50,
    At close distance it seemed as if I stepped a step back when I shot with the 14-24mm compared to the small 16-50mm.
    At medium distance (100-200m) it seemed like if i just added 5meters on my right side and left side.
    At long distance (kilometers away), you can see a difference but it does not justify $1000 for USA and let alone 1300EUR in Europe.
    Maybe i just expected too much of an ''ultra wide angle lens"? From pictures ive seen in the internet it looks like this lens would fix all the problems you have by fitting EVERYTHING in the picture beautifully. Anyways I still think my 16-50mm lens ($250) outperforms this wide angle lens.
    Or did i do something wrong?
    Like i said, im not an expert or anything on photography, and maybe me and real photographers have different expectations for lenses.
    edit: i also found my16-50mm($250) being sharper than the ultra wide angle lenses when zooming into the picutre for far objects..

      I have both lenses and Z50 + Z5. However, the 14-24 gets placed on the Z5. I can definitely see a quality difference as well as performance. The kit lens is solid but completely fails in low light on the z50 (in my experience). It's not built for challenging situations (i.e. astro, rain, snow). Definitely wouldn't trust it for professional/paid use. Still a fun lens on the z50 though! I use it when I want minimal weight and have gotten good images out of it👌 Also, the 14-24 shouldn't be used for all occasions. It depends on what subject the user is shooting. I only bring out the 14-24 for specific uses.

    • @willchaneyphoto
      @willchaneyphoto  3 роки тому +1

      First off, I don't think you did anything wrong. I'll preface this by saying I've never used the Z50 or it's lenses, but I'm sure it has great image quality with the kit lens. Keep in mind that the difference between a 14mm focal lens and a 16mm focal length lens is not going to be very much. As you found out, the distance in what you see in the frame is going to be out in the edges since 14mm is going to have a wider field of view than 16mm. But when you go from 16mm to 14mm everything in the frame is going to shrink slightly.
      Ultrawides for me have very specific use cases. I rarely use them to help squeeze more stuff into the frame. What I actually do with them is squeeze less in the frame and try to get as close to my subject of interest as possible. Usually that makes what ever is in the foreground appear much larger than it really is and helps exaggerate whatever is in the background. If you're just using it when traveling to photograph land marks, street photography, etc, you're going to run into the issue you mentioned where everything just becomes smaller which may be why objects don't look as sharp since you are using a crop sensor camera. The other area I use this lens a lot for is the Milky Way. That's a large object that at 14mm still takes up a large amount of real-estate in the images produced. 14mm also aids in giving a more artistic use that helps visualize the arch of the Milky Way across the sky. And again, its great to find a foreground object to get right on top of to exaggerate the scene.
      When you go out on a trip such as Greece or Venice, what are your goals in the photos you take? Next time you go out, take that wide shot at 16mm and get the shot of the city you want or whatever about the experience you enjoy that makes you take the photo. But then right after, think about what really made you want to take the photo. For instance in Venice, take the grand wide angle shot at 16mm of the canal, with a boat in it and the city against the canals, but right after take a zoomed in shot of just the boat on the canal, or the person rowing and try to find an interesting way to place them in the frame.
      Hope that all gives you some perspective on the lens and helps you out in your future travels!

    • @ThePinoyAggie
      @ThePinoyAggie 2 роки тому

      This lens is designed for full-frame and the Z50 has an APSC sensor. You have to take into account the crop factor between 35 mm full-frame and an APSC sensor. I believe, the Z50 has a 1.52 crop factor. Therefore, the 14-24 mm in full-frame is 21-36.5 mm on the Z50. That's why you are not seeing the wide-angle performance of this lens with your camera. Nothing wrong with the lens. It is your camera and lens combination that is the issue.
