    Knowing what lenses to use and how to use them to capture a scene is really going to help me improve my compositions. I really like the advice at the end where you talk about swapping out the lenses during a shoot, and if one is using a tracker it's okay to get an off-brand lens. The prices on MPB are really good too! Thanks for sharing that resource.

    Hey Alyn, just pre-ordered your book! (paperback, was too late for hardback haha). Your channel, along with Night Lights Films has been a huge inspiration for me. I shoot with a 6D modded and an A7S 1st gen for timelapse stuff. I don't recall if you have a video reviewing the Sony A7 IV for astrophotography. I'd love that content and am particularly interested in how it performs in bulb mode for tracked images. It seems to do great just based off of the work you have done with it but a new camera is a big purchase decision and I'd like to have the best review I can get! Just a though, i know you're probably quite busy!

    Two quick questions ...
    1. If you are looking for a smaller 50mm lens, have you considered the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8? True, it won't be an f/1.4, but it might be an option worth considering and it is tiny!
    2. Have you tried the Tamron 35-150 f/2.0-2.8 lens and if so, what were your thoughts. It would definitely be a compromise, but it might be a viable compromise for a lot of amateurs for whom this is a hobby.

    Alyn, I hope you enjoyed your visit to the states. There are a number of sand dunes around the western side of the country, including Great Sand Dunes National Park in lower Colorado. Those dunes reach up to 750 feet/228 meters, and bring a whole new level of knee and thigh pain, much worse than the Stair Master. Plus the added restriction in oxygen as the base of the dunes are about 7,500 ft/ 2.28 km high. But the sky views, on a cloudless night, are incredible.

      I have the same set up and it is spectacular! There is a secret behind the color science of Canon cameras. I will give you some lens suggestions for you. For this camera, get the Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4, Samyang 24mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art, Samyang 85mm f/1.4 UMC or Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (performs way better at higher price), and Samyang 135mm f/2.0 (the greatest lens for astrophotography).

    Thank You for the review of the wide and wide open lenses. But with the wide open you also need a faster SS using NPF rules 14mm 1.8 20.95s, 2.8 23.47s or accurate 10.47s vs 11.73s, f4 13.14 BUT you get a brighter image go figure. The nice thing about the 14mm or 20mm (18mm) is you only need one row pano two is better to get a 3:2 look and with the faster SS you can do a 200 deg. in less than 1 1/2 min even with NR on (move when in NR). They are also really sharp not needing a tracked/long exposure. The 50 is also good for tracking the moon eclipse like the 80 1.8 best. Just a note I was doing sunsets/MW's at Casa Grande AZ. and the rattlesnakes longer than I am tall (6'2") came by me on both sides and while doing MW's they went by in front of me several times, I always wear snake boots and shin shields on front and back of upper legs or Chaps. They are protected out west because they keep the mouse population in control. On the dunes are sidewinders, a long way to a hospital. In '69 I was in high school in Abilene High in Abilene Tx and every Aug. they had a snake roundup on the school grounds with barbequed snake (after milking) as a fundraiser. Just saying at night you do not see until you hear the rattle, Always wear at least full (font/back) chaps and boots and a tent with a floor!!!! With your car/camper a bag of mothballs used around wheels, at 16 I pumped gas and pickup trucks came in with added two side saddle tanks and after a little squirt under the trucks axles a snake or two would come out, just think about it please.

    Thank you for this video, and yes a great choice…I can follow you completely. But if you’re looking for a smaller 50mm look out for the Voigtlander Apo Lanthar 50 mm f/2 Aspherical. Yes only f2 but razor-sharp wide open and no coma, so great. I’ve also the Sony 55mmf1.8 but the Voigt is much sharper. Look for the LensTip or PhilipReeve reviews if you’ve any doubts.

    I'm personally using the Sony 20mm f/1.8 - nice for a compromise between the 14mm and the 24mm while saving on quite a bit of weight and a LOT of money compared to having both of them. Haven't been shooting much with 50mm lenses, but I recently got the Rokinon/Samyang 135mm f/1.8, and that one's been fantastic for wide-field deep-sky astro. I think it would be interesting to use it for a super high-res landscape pano, but my tripod head is kinda crap for panoramas that are that exact.

    Thumbs Up and Subscribed. I am a Sony fan with two A7R iv and a couple Sony lens. I deviated from 'the family' and purchased a Tamron 28-75 that I like quite well. I really thought this video would tell me that an ultra wide, sub 20mm, was the only way to get great results. This is soooooooo cool because I was obsessed with getting another lens. I am gonna use what I have and new to astro (star trails thus far) having made a few crappy pics that delight me and will forge on and loving it!!! Thank You.

    Hey Allyn, as an alternative look at the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Yes it isn’t 1.4 but it is still one of the sharpest lenses ever made. It does suffer from loca but that goes away by f2.8. Not to mention it is absolutely tiny. I have switched to using that instead of a 24-70 as my “regular” focal length due to the sharpness and immense weight savings. I can’t recommend it enough even if just to test it out. Plus it’s been out for ages so plenty of money to be saved on the used side as well.

    • @victorgordon3845
      @victorgordon3845 2 роки тому

      Hi Do you have the Zeiss 24-70 or the 24-70GM? What’s the performance like? I was thinking of buying the 24-70 GM but am not sure which lens is better.

    • @Oakley5100
      @Oakley5100 Рік тому +1

      @@victorgordon3845 I have the 24-70 GM version 1. So the very very old one that came out around the same time as the Alpha series cameras. With the version 2 being out I can’t recommend even considering the version 1 to save some money. It’s just not sharp at all at 2.8 from about 50-70 mm. Anything on the shorter end and it’s great but for its size, weight, and cost there are far better options out there. I would get the tamron 28-75 2.8 in a heartbeat over the version 1 GM, problem is when I got it there were no alternatives.

    10:53 to that point, even tho you're not too keen on anything 2-2.8, have you considered adding the Tamron 35-150mm to your kit? You'd get the extra reach & have a decent aperture range to work with, especially if blending the scene with any of the 14/24/50 shots?
    I really wish Nikon (or Tamron) would make a Z version of that lens, I'd add it to my gear in a heartbeat for this particular blending possibility!

Might add the 14, 35, 85 (V2) GM at some point in the future. Once I started doing astro panoramas, I stop using my Sony GM trinity Zooms.

      I never bought the GM trinity, went with the Tamron 28-200 and 200-600 G instead. I really like not having to change lenses at 70mm, and it sounds like you don't use zoom lenses out to 200mm anyways. I was planning on getting the 12-24mm GM, but it is huge, and I already don't like carrying the 200-600, so I am considering the 14mm GM or 14mm Sigma that just came out. The Tamron was fast enough to caupture the auroras clearly at f2.8, 0.5 second exposures, and iso 5000, but I always wanted wider and would have preferred faster, only one of which I get with the 12-24 GM, so I think I will instead be going for a 14mm prime (I use an A7RV by the way, cropping is not a problem). I do like your mini laptop idea. My only concern is running out of power.

    I'm going for the Sigma EF mount variants of these for my Canon EOS R. I'll likely add the 35mm F1.4 and the 135mm F1.8 as well.

    My gf gave me the 14mm GM a few weeks ago, it's a beast. Now I use 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm, 135mm and 150-500mm. I only used the last one for a moon shot though.

    Have you ever considered the 135mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 for Panoramics and nebula

    Wouldn't the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 be a good option for the 50-ish range?

    Maybe one could skip the 14 and 24 and just buy the 20? Unlike the 14 it takes filters and is a fraction the price of both. Instead of the 50 APO I purchased the 35 Voighlander APO on Allen’s advise. I might buy or rent the 65mm apo for Astro panorama

    For a lighter normal lens in your Trinity, how about the Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Zeiss lens at about 1/3 the weight of the Sony 50/1.4?

    Thanks for the interesting video, my favourite lenses for my nikon are 11-16, f2. 8, my manual focus 28mm and 35mm and my sigma 10-20mm f4, on my canon 6d, I have my manual focus 35mm, canon 50mm, f1. 8 and I've just got a 20mm 2.8, which I have only used once. The lenses you use, are beyond my means

      If you consolidated, limiting yourself to one camera and three or four lenses total, and selling the rest, you could afford them. Granted, I want three cameras and at least four lenses for them to share, so what do I know, lol.
