Thanks for the video. Is there any chance that you could (re)shoot this at 14mm using the NPF Rule, rather than 20 seconds? I don’t think that there is a issue with the les; you’ve simply got rotational blur from a too-long-an-exposure. Again, thanks for the video!
Hi Steve , can i ask , what white balance are you at when in a dark star sight. As i just had my old 6d converted and live in camden ,sydney, light polluted fairly heavily , i haven't found a white balance setting that i am happy with , auto has produced the best shots . i am planning a trip away to a dark site this weekend weather permitting. Any info would be great thanks . As far as the Canon is concerned i bought a zeiss milvus at 18mm 2.8 sharp all corners i also have a 21mm zeiss but corners have coma right at the very edges and very zoomed in. the only other zoom is the 15-30 tamron ,its ok but the two zeiss lenses leave it for dead at the corners , definitely not as good as the 14-24 2.8 Z .
I’ve heard the Milvus lenses are fantastic, I almost went down that path a few years ago when shooting with my D810a. When it comes to white balance it will vary under different night sky locations. I think I was 2.0 in G and 0 M then around 4000K, I couldn’t tell you for definite though. When I take a shot I look at my colour rgb histogram on the back of the screen and try to align my colour channels. That gives the best natural looking sky I find. Sorry I can’t help you out much more than that, I will try to add that info in my videos in the future.

Your very welcome. I had it astro modded at Canera Clinic in Melbourne. It’s only an Astro mod and not a full spectrum. It does allow more light through when I compared it to my Z6 ii. Really happy with the mod and you can use it for daytime photography too with a good custom white balance under most conditions.

@@StevenMorrisPhotography Question: do I understand correctly that with a powerbank connected to the USB-C port of the Z7II, I can power the camera throughout the night without having to resort to a dummy battery (hooked to powerbank) or repeatedly changing the EN-EL15c battery?
That is correct however I haven’t tested to see how long you can do it for. It would depend on if the charge rate is greater than the power consumed for the images

I have a Z6, not a Z7 like you, so I'm wondering if the sensor density affects the amount of coma. Or do you think there may be some variation from lens copy to lens copy?
That’s interesting you say that, I’m wondering if the length of exposure and how far away from the pole the stars are would mean they could trail more with super wide angle lenses. Regardless of that it’s interesting yours is showing coma, I’ve seen a few 14-24 lenses that have been fine. Does it happen on a super short exposure?
The 20mm 1.8 lens I find great for shooting timelapse with the extra light it can pull in with shorter exposures so I can achieve longer videos, other than that not really the 14-24 is the new astro legend I think, although I do want to get my hands on the 50mm 1.2s lens.
Really? I just tested this lens with z7ii and it is pretty good at 14mm only, at 20mm its the birds on the wing and same at 24mm, my old 14-24g was much better? You absolutely cannot tell what these stars look like on back of camera, I so wanted to love this lens, but I am returning it and trying another copy.
How did you get on with your replacement lens? Mine is similar to yours. I’m finding between 14mm and about 19mm coma is well corrected but 20mm upwards I’m getting coma. Would be good to hear if you tried another copy ? Cheers mate
Hi Richard, I haven’t really done too much more besides timelapse. I’ve mostly been imaging with my telescopes. I’m still very happy with the lens and comparing it to the older version 2.8G lens for the FX mount it’s leaps ahead. Sorry I haven’t investigated any further.

I agree I believe it’s rotation blur at 14mm that’s why I shot a tracked shot to prove that was the case.

Your very welcome, to get longer exposure times I used a shutter release cable or with this tracker I can use the tracker to create long exposures.
I modified my camera my self and I shoot with rokinon 14 mm f2. 8

It’s a bit crazy in NSW at the moment, I’m lucky to be in South Australia with very stable weather. Hope it eases up soon.

Regardless of that it’s interesting yours is showing coma, I’ve seen a few 14-24 lenses that have been fine.

@@StevenMorrisPhotography I see coma in exposures using f/2.8 from 10 seconds not using a tracker and up to 60 seconds on a star tracker.

I got this lens as my first lens for my Z7II. I'm mainly using the Z7II for astrophotography. Is there any point in purchasing the 20 or 35mm lens?
